Sparky, a mischievous puppy, can magically be taken to other places, whenever he chews on his special bone. In this book from the Magic Bone series, Sparky tells about dog school, treats, and his adventure in Hawaii. Of course, Sparky always gets into trouble wherever he goes. I think this book will be enjoyed by our young early readers. It's a fun, beginning chapter book.
S listened to me read this entire book, and L listened to a little over half of it. It didn't fully hold the attention of the 3-year-old, which is understandable because it was pretty much just right for the 6-year-old. It's interesting to read this with my son because Sparky, the narrator, is a dog and there are a lot of things he doesn't understand, because he's a dog. So watching my 6-year-old puzzle out what Sparky is talking about is fun. He's always impressed with himself. "Oh, the big machine with four paws is a car!" "The giant chew toy that goes in the water is a surf board!" To be honest, I don't find these stories particularly entertaining, but I do like that they hit the highlights of different destinations around the world. My son has enjoyed the two we have read so far, though, and is looking forward to reading the third one.
After a tough day at doggy school, Sparky decides to do some digging. He comes across his magic bone and gets swept away to a new place called Hawaii. There he learns about surfing, meets some of the locals, tastes some of the food, learns about an endangered species, and once he's had enough he comes back to his backyard.
This a fun little virtual visit of Hawaii for young readers. I really like how Krulik writes things from a dog's perspective. It is humorous, and a great example of voice for young writers. I also like that Sparky unselfishly chooses to help someone over helping himself at one point. He may have little doggy foibles (like digging even though he knows his human doesn't like it), but he has a good heart.
This is the second book in the Magic Bone series by Nancy Krulik. The story is a fun fast read and a magic bone takes Sparky to the island of Maui in Hawaii. There are numerous black and white cartoonish illustrations throughout the book and they complement the story nicely.
Our girls weren't too excited about this book, even though it features our beloved Hawaii, so I just read it myself. I am sure they feel like they've outgrown this level of story. sigh...they grow up so quickly. I probably won't read any more of the books in this series; they are cute, but not substantial enough to want to pursue them any further. At least I have an idea about them, so I could recommend them to younger children. I think the target group would be around grades 1-3.
I understand why some kids may love these books. The main character is a goofy dog who is always making mistakes. For what this series is trying to do- engage young, early readers, it is adequate. I think I like Down Girl and Sit is a better written and more entertaining series, but there are not as many books from which to choose.
My kids who love the George Brown series discovered this one and love it. It is a cute series about a puppy who gets transported to different places with a magic bone. The puppy tells the story so that is fun for readers.
