Patrick Bannister #2

Darkness & Shadows

Rate this book
In The Lion, The Lamb, The Hunted, Andrew E. Kaufman thrilled readers with a bestseller of psychological suspense. In Darkness & Shadows, he ratchets up the tension, weaving a masterful web of intrigue.

The only woman Patrick Bannister ever loved has died…again.

Struggling professionally and reeling from the psychological wounds left by a horribly abusive mother, Patrick is driven over the edge by a news report. A wealthy socialite couple has been murdered, and while the wife’s name isn’t familiar, her face certainly is. It’s his first and only love, Marybeth, the woman he lost to a horrific fire years ago.

Is he losing his mind?

Patrick’s obsession to find the truth sends him scouring records and documents that lead him to a shocking discovery: there’s no evidence Marybeth ever lived or, for that matter, ever died. Was the love of Patrick’s life just a product of his abused psyche?

The truth may kill him.

His quest for answers takes him on a twisted mental odyssey that forces him to question his own reality. He might not be able to trust his memories and perceptions of the past, but the answers may still lie in the darkest recesses of his mind.

But Patrick will soon find out that by stoking the flames from that long ago fire, he’s blazing a path straight into danger. And this time, not only is he about to get burned—he could also end up losing his life.

The only woman Patrick Bannister has loved has died again. Struggling professionally with his psychological wounds left by his wicked horrible mother patrick is driven over the edge by a news report a wealthy couple has been murdered, & while the wife's name is familiar her face certainly is .

Its the face of Marybeth who died in a fire years earlier is he imagining it or has she returned & they can rekindle the love they once shared. The story goes back & forth to their relationship but is Marybeth on the up & up what Patrick finds is documents that may prove Marybeth ever lived or died.

What Patrick finds is that his once love Marybeth is not what she seems.

DAMN Mr Kaufman you have proven you are a good writer in this genre & i hope the series of Patrick Bannister continues.

I did feel for Patrick as he struggles with his demons about his mothers treatment of him but he seemed to move on & get on with things.

I enjoyed the characters in this sequel but I liked the first book a little more. The story was good but took a little while to get kick started and the main character was a just a bit too erratic and unstable in the beginning. It was hard to sympathize with him until he started to help himself. Again, good writing where the author let us guess at what was going on and then gave it a good twist in the very end.

The books by Andrew Kaufman are nice easy mysteries. In this book Patrick, an investigative reporter sees a woman on tv who is missing, but that woman was Patrick's girlfriend many years ago and she died in a fire, and Patrick witnessed it. So how can she be alive and missing when she is already dead? So he goes in search of the truth and along the way he meets Tristan, a bit of a rough looking woman who ends up helping him with his search for missing/dead woman.

As a student of Psychology, I was immediately attracted to this book after reading the synopsis. While it has been many years (more than I care to say) since graduating with my degree, I have always been interested in Psychological dramas, and being an empathetic individual, I am often very moved by the difficulties and trials people experience in their lives.

I can also say that I have experienced some of these first hand, so it is not difficult to see through a troubled person's eyes. As a result, as I read Darkness & Shadows I was truly intrigued and invested in the protagonist's struggles and hardships that he had lived through, and the mystery he was now attempting to solve. In that sense, this book was quite good, fast-paced, and kept my interest throughout.

Where the problem lies, in my opinion, is with the ending. While I will not provide specifics, as this type of spoiler would ruin the book for most, suffice it to say that I found it troubling that an individual who had experienced so much pain and suffering in his life, could not even begin to understand how another person's similar environment could cause them to do "a bad thing", especially if it was done against their will or under extreme duress.

This is why I downgraded the book to three stars, as I simply cannot understand the protagonist's acceptance of one individual's struggles and wrongdoings, while at the same time having no empathy or consideration for another.

The bottom line, are there any of us who have not done something in our lives that we know was wrong and still regret to this day?

Wow, I was glad to finish this book. (audible review)

The author really ruined Patrick's character by making him a whiny crybaby. WHY?????????????????

The story itself had potential, but seriously, the women in this book had more backbone and character than Patrick did.

I'm sorry but I am done with this author and this series if anymore books come out.

As for the narration, it was fine, Luke Daniels cried and whined for Patrick's character on queue as the author wrote it.

OUTSTANDING DREW!!

Andrew E. Kaufman....hmmmmm...he's kind of to good to be true.

1st.....This is the 4th time I've had the pleasure of diving into something that has come out of this gentleman's twisted brain and I've gotta say that I think he keeps getting better everytime out!
2nd.....He believes that the world would be a better place if everyone in it had at least 3 dogs AND the metabolism to eat chocolate with every meal!
3rd.....He's NICE. I mean really, really, really a wonderfully swell fella!

Come on! Don't ya have a flaw or two Drew??

No flaws here! This was a fast paced, action packed, easy to get into read. Andrew has such a remarkable flare for putting words on a page! He writes so elegantly that I am absolutely blown away everytime I realize that my heart has started racing and I can't blink because I'm afraid I'll miss what's next!

These characters...Patrick most of all...are damaged. They hurt...they weep...they fall....and then they get up and do it all over again.....and I hurt, weep and fall right along with them! I think that is what draws me into Andrew E. Kaufman's novels....the emotional investment that is demanded from me everytime I crack open one of these books.

I'm on board with ya Drew! For every rollercoaster ride you send me on, I'm there!
I'm sure I'll have to leave the lights on and wrap up in a blankie to get myself through every time but I am there!

Nice job!!

The third I've read by this author and the third I've given 5 stars to (and I don't throw those around willy-nilly)!! It features Patrick from one of his prior books but you don't need to have read the previous story. This time round he has a new friend (apart from Bullet the dog he saved in the other story who I was delighted to meet again in his new guise of a loved doggy)called Tristan. I've only ever heard that name used as a boy's name over here. I really liked her a lot although her spikiness reminds me of Lisbeth in the Larsson books.
The mistakes are WAY fewer in this story, too. The only one I spotted was leverage used instead of lever !! That was wonderful. I really liked what the author says about his mum at the end of the book as well-it made me sniffy.
Can't wait to read his next one !!

I really don't remember much about this. I enjoyed The Lion, the Lamb, the Hunted and didn't think much of Twisted. I do remember that I enjoyed this and thought it was much better than Twisted so, on that basis, 4 stars.

You cannot win 'em all ...

This is the 3rd book by Andrew E. Kaufman that I've read, and while I loved the first two, this was lacking the same quality. In Darkness and Shadows the protagonist from Kaufman's earlier book Lion, The Lamb, The Hunted, The returns, and to me our hero seems shallow and two-dimensional compared to his first escapade. The story really is not believeable and seems far too random this time around ...
I will still continue to read Kaufman's books, as 2 out of 3 hits are still kinda great, I will recommend not starting with Darkness and Shadows if you're new to Kaufman, but instead pick up the afore mentioned The Lion ... or Twisted which were both great books :)

Highly recommended to those who enjoy a fast paced (psychological) thriller.

A sharp but psychologically abused journalist tormented by the tragic loss of the love of his life; a prominent wealthy couple’s disappearance under mysterious circumstances; a beautiful but damaged woman struggling to overcome her abusive past. Throw in some terror and destructive fires with a vengeful police detective and you have the dangerous and exciting recipe for the fantastic new thriller by Andrew E. Kaufman “Darkness & Shadows. All I can say is buckle up, you’re in for a wild ride!
First a disclaimer: I am primarily only a reader of romance novels with the occasional paranormal as long as there are plenty of steamy love scenes to keep my attention. That being said, I was not prepared for how much I would become engrossed in this book and LOVE it despite it being out of my usual comfort zone. I literally did not put my kindle down for an entire day until I read the book from start to finish. This is the type of novel that BEGS to be made into a movie, the kind of action/mystery that makes you hold your breath until it is over. I found myself doing just that and trying to read faster to find out what happens next.
Kaufman has a real gift with words and he intersperses his mysterious murder mystery with Patrick’s story of love lost from the past, the visits to his therapist who is trying to help him deal with his demons and move forward and a new surprising relationship with an unlikely partner.
Darkness & Shadows is the perfect combination of suspense, mystery, romance, action and some of the most well written and realistic conversations I have ever read between a therapist and patient. It has a natural flow that moves right along like a lazy river until it hits a fast moving whirlpool that sucks you down until you think you are drowning, only to be pulled up gasping for air. Amazing and just wow…it was a thrill to experience!
Highly recommended: 5+ stars for this exciting new novel.

Andrew E. Kaufman, incredible author of the psychological thrillers, has written another blockbuster, Darkness & Shadows.

*****

Emotionally damaged by a childhood filled with the abuse and indifference of his mother, Patrick Bannister is further devastated when the only woman he ever loved dies in a fire, as he watches on helplessly.

Plagued by loss and guilt, Patrick hits bottom when he loses his job as a crime reporter for News World, but the reporter in him refuses to quit. The question is...will Patrick survive after a deeper look into his past, his own mind and the murder of his dead girlfriend?

*****

The intrigue kept me turning the pages. The suspense kept me from putting Darkness & Shadows down. The fast pace kept me on edge. The trail of evidence kept me guessing right to the end!

A great continuation of Patrick Bannister's story from The Lion, The Lamb, The Hunted or as a stand-alone novel, I promise you won't be disappointed.

Andrew E. Kaufman provided another well-written novel that will keep his readers crying out for more!

Books like this really make us wonder how well we know the people we interact with every day. Andrew Kaufman has a way of digging deep into his characters, showing us all the raw emotions that led them to where they are.

This story is true psychological suspense. We're inside Patrick's head, experiencing his pain, confusion, and desperation. But it's not all sadness and heartbreak. There are moments between him and Tristan that are inspiring, hopeful, and even funny. And I love Patrick's relationship with Bullet, the dog he rescued who also rescues him.

The plot moves at a good pace and has some great twists. But, for me, the strength of the story lies in Patrick's journey of self-discovery.

** This is the second book featuring Patrick Bannister. While it can be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone, I think it has more of an impact if read in sequence. The Lion, the Lamb, the Hunted is the first book. **

This story begins with reporter Patrick Bannister (from The Lion, The Lamb, The Hunted) in counseling, hoping to come to terms with the memories of two women who were a predominant part of his life. Firstly his hateful and abusive mother and secondly his one and only love Marybeth who died in a fire.
15 years later when a wealthy couple suddenly disappear Patrick is convinced the wife is Marybeth. He is determined to uncover the truth and along with his companion Bullet, an abused adopted dog, he teams up with Tristan, a convicted thief.
I enjoyed the pairing of Patrick and Tristan - they worked well together and their back and forth banter was fun.
The intriguing plot twists kept me guessing until the end.
Exciting and Suspenseful!
Bullet's tongue shots were hilarious!

I NEVER win anything so imagine my surprise when I was lucky enough to win an advance copy of Darkness & Shadows. As always, Mr. Kaufman never fails to deliver and that holds true for Darkness & Shadows. Not sure what I thought the continuing story of Patrick would be but that definitely wasn't it. Lots of twists and turns and surprises in store.

Thanks, Drew. I'm already looking forward to the release of your next one. ;)

I really enjoyed this book. . . until the end. This fast-paced thriller kept me up at night and the climax was great- totally unexpected, but really well done. But I wasn't satisfied with the end, which seemed rushed and had lots of loose ends. I'm not sure if the author is setting up a sequel, but as a stand alone book, I wanted more.

I got this book from goodreads giveaways

The plot is good (a girl dies in plain view, but later it turns out that she may not actually be dead). The protagonist is interesting (a naïve, bumbling ex journalist). There are unexpected developments that keep one turning the pages. There is a satisfactory ending. But, alas, the book isn’t well written. Much of the dialog is stilted. The philosophy is juvenile. Clichés abound.

Another rollercoaster ride!

Wow! AK has done it again! As a follow on from The Lion the Lamb and the Hunted this was brilliant! As a rule i don't normally read the next one in a series as I normally like to come back to them! As it was, I was drawn to this one and decided for once to skip my rule and am glad I did! In this one Patrick is still coming to terms with the abuse that was inflicted on him by his mother. However he is also remembering his first love who died in a fire accident in college. However nothing is as it seems as years later he sees a picture of her on the news saying she has died in a tragic accident. How is that possible when she was already dead? Nobody can die twice can they?! And so begins a journey for Patrick to step back into the past yet again and deal with some very raw emotions and to find out why the woman he loved managed to die all over again. A very cleverly put together plot that will have the reader transfixed and unable.to put down. Throw in a dead body or two, clever manipulation and the psychological behind it will have you gasping by the end! You will not be disappointed! I can't wait to read his other books!

"Darkness & Shadows" is book #2 in the Patrick Bannister series. While this series has psychological suspense, it is not as graphic and gory as his others such as "Twisted" and "While the Savage Sleeps." While I look forward to his graphic suspense novels, the Patrick Bannister series is just as captivating in another way. The series stars Patrick Bannister, a once brilliant and now struggling investigative reporter. The plot is well thought out and held my attention until the end. The three main characters were interesting and responded to plot twists in different ways. I can highly recommend Kaufman's novels as I am constantly entertained. (I read "Twisted" twice, one right after the other it was so good.) When looking for his books, it's important to include his middle initial "E" because there are other authors named Andrew Kaufman out there.

13/20 points

Writing: 3/4
Characters: 3/4
Story: 2/4
Pacing: 3/4
Personal: 2/4

This book is probably my least favorite of them all. I wish we would have gotten a better look into Patrick's OCD. Not going to lie, this story was kind of forgettable for me. I forgot what it was about fairly soon after reading it. I think I just don't care much for Patrick Bannister in general.

I will continue to read Andrew E Kaufman's books as they come out, though. I will probably get them in physical form also. I'm excited for him to come out with more stuff!

This is a good thriller that started off a little slow for me but quickly picked up the pace: what I liked the most is the author made you feel as if you were there, and literally gets you into the head (pun intended) of his main character. While I did pick this up for free, I’d certainly like to read more from Mr. Kaufman.

Awesome Read!!!

Well worth reading! There's nothing like finding out that the only person you ever loved and watched burn to death in a fire never really died - at least not until years later when Patrick saw her death reported on the news. Andrew E. Kaufman has a knack for keeping you at the edge of your seat! Can't wait to see what he has to offer next.
