I wanted to score with her so badly, my best friend's younger sister. She was always off-limits. Then we had that one magical night on the beach after prom. I couldn’t wait to take her on a real date and tell the world she was mine. But my father would never allow me to ruin my hockey career for a girl and I was afraid of what he might do to her if I gave in to my desire. With that one move, I had earned Mara’s lifelong hatred. Now, I'm back in town after seven years, riding high as the league's top hockey player. Begging her to be my physiotherapist for the summer and keep me hiding from reporters and my father. My secret must stay hidden at all costs. If she finds out, the whole damn thing will blow up in my face, and I'll lose her all over again.
Short second chance book. Jay and Mara had one night then Jay left. He returns after 7 years but can he and Mara possibly get back what was lost so long ago?
OK, I'm generally no big fan of novellas. I always miss the depth of the characters and story, but I want to read the second book Amelia has written, so my inner Monk forces me to read this book first 😎 When "Gus" appeared in the book, I knew I'd like it. If there is a dog in the book it's huge PLUS for me. But Gus isn't just any dog. He is an Irish Wolfhound. I'm a HUGE sucker for every sighthound/greyhound breed 😍 But I liked the plot too. In the beginning, I hated Jay. I think we all did/would do... He took Mara's V-card and then dumped her. WTF!!! BIG no-go!!! Why do guys do that? SEVEN years later, he comes with his dick between his legs and asks for her help. DICKHAED. Oh sorry, yes, I need to rant about him 🙈 And then there is Stella... A reporter and Jay's ex? The book soon gets a huge twist 😱
MMC/FMC- Jay and Mara POV- 1st person dual Genre- Sports Romance Sub Genre- Hockey Heat- 🌋🌋🌋🌋 from page one. Safety: there’s no cheating, no sharing, no s. violence, no OM/OW drama, no cliffhanger. HEA. Triggers- language, explicit erotic content, blackmail. Tropes- Virgin Heroine, Prom Night, Brother’s Best Friend, Second Chance, Secrets and Lies. What I liked- that they were both still in love with each other. And the zexytime was super hot. What I didn’t- trying not to give spoilers here, but the blackmail plot line was pretty easily resolved. Verdict- quick, enjoyable read.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Overall the book was good, but it was too short. There was a lot to the story line and it felt rushed. I enjoyed the characters. I would say this would do much better as a 2 or 3 hundred page book. It would draw you in more and make me more invested in the characters and their lives.
It's a fun quick story to give a glimpse into Jay and Mara. It's very balanced in terms of plot vs drama vs spice. The writing style is a bit of a snag for me that prevents giving the full 5 stars. There could be more unique language used to describe how things are done or said. And sometimes it all feels a little young even though the characters are adults.
