Night Lights

Rate this book
Six original mystical tales introduce stargazers of all ages to the ancient art of storytelling.
The stars that blanket the night sky are filled with mystery, magic and wonder. Our ancestors often looked to them for guidance, collecting and sharing stories of their twinkling wisdom for centuries. Even today we turn to the stars in amazement, seeking both inspiration and illumination.
Night Lights is a new and inspired collection of bedtime stories (and just as enjoyable reading in blazing daylight), pairing elements of the zodiac with playful and meaningful tales of friendship, resiliency and a little bit of magic. Whether your child is afraid of the dark or enchanted by it, the characters they'll meet along the way will both engage and comfort.
The Ram and the Fish (Aries and Pisces)
The Water Bearer and the Goat (Aquarius and Capricorn)
The Archer and the Scorpion (Sagittarius and Scorpio)
The Scales and the Maiden (Libra and Virgo)
The Lion and the Crab (Leo and Cancer)
The Twins and the Bull (Gemini and Taurus)
Author Jeannie K. Johnson has been an astrology enthusiast for nearly thirty years. When her now grown son was young, he had a very real fear of the dark. This book is her love letter to him, and to the night sky.
For readers eight and up. And a fun read-to-me book for the 5-7 set.

Beautifully illustrated and filled with stories for all children, Night Lights would make the perfect bedtime story book. There are six stories within the Night Lights collection, each representing two Zodiac signs. The stories have heart, compassion, strength and morals laced within themes that children will easily understand.

The night sky is fascinating! The stars that we see are mesmerizing. Now, take that star filled night sky and tell stories about it. Stories that are filled with friendship, resiliency, some competition and of course magic and wonder!

For any child who finds peace in the night sky (or fear!) these stories are for them. They are short but your conversations afterwards will be overflowing with thoughts and wonderment.

Night Lights by Jeannie K. Johnson is just the loveliest book! It's pages are filled with wonderfully crafted stories about the adventures of characters formed by the constellations of stars in the night sky. We know these as the twelve signs of the Zodiac. What a great way to introduce young readers to, and spark interest in, astrology as well as the wonder of the stars above us. All of this plus helping young ones overcome their fear of the dark. How amazing is that?!!!

The six stories creatively portray the characters, pair by pair, in all their strengths and weaknesses while they learn and teach valuable life lessons. These adventures and overcoming their struggles help each character to grow and become better through shared experiences.

These fables are filled with kindheartedness, courage, humility and gratitude. All readers, young and the young-at-heart, will surely be grateful themselves for their time reading and sharing this wonderful book. And not to be overlooked, is its beauty as well. Night Lights is elegantly bound and illustrated. It deserves a "face-out" spot on the bookshelf or coffee table for display and enticement to readers of all ages.

Night Lights: Six Original Fables Inspired By The Zodiac is a wonderful, thought-provoking, engaging, moral-filled, and fun book! This book contains six stories full of depth, heart, values, and kindness. The stories are fairly long and would make wonderful bedtime stories. All of the 12 Zodiac signs are represented in the stories with each story featuring two complimentary signs. The stories themselves have lots of conversation starters and thought-provoking messages. Is it ever okay to trick someone into doing something if it means saving their life? What exactly is balance? Is being kind to someone in need worth taking huge potential life altering risks? These fables are great moral teachers. I love all of their messages! If you enjoy the Zodiac signs or love learning valuable lessons, this book is a must read!

Six original fables inspired by the zodiac, this book will capture all of the star gazers' attention! Each story combines two of the zodiacs. Very well written stories that will definitely get the imagination going, for both parents and children!

This will be one we keep around for a long time. My husband recently got a telescope, and I have always found zodiac topics fascinating!

Such a unique, well thought out book. Definitely recommend.

I can truly tell the author has passion for the topic written!
Which I really appreciate.

My four year old has so much fun with these stories! We love the combination of zodiac signs pairing with these stories of friendship, resiliency, and a sprinkle of magic.

I love how this book helps kiddos who may be afraid of the dark. My kiddo is, but this book has comforted her and by her words “helped her grow brave.”

This will be a good we keep in rotation and will be perfect as she gets older and starts to read on her own!

Special thanks to Book Publicity Services for a copy of this book! These stories were very readable and I felt like every story was very quick to finish before bed! Perfect for the short story lover or the kid learning how to read with an adult. The illustrations were also beautiful and enhanced every story! I also loved that the illustrations depicted every animal/symbol of the zodiac sign the was the focal part of the story, very subtly though. An enjoyable read.

What a set of lovely stories, timeless fables to comfort a child afraid of the dark but also to remind adults of the wonders above. This book will become a classic bedtime read like Goodnight Moon.

This is a delightful picture book for people who are interested in astrology. Each of the six short stories brings two characters (representing two astrological signs) together, and in the end they all learn important life lessons. The stories are creative, and the characters embody the traits associated with their corresponding signs.

This is a beautiful book.

The illustrations are stunning with both the astrological representation and the physical depiction. I would never have been able to pick out Leo ♌️ in the stars, but seeing it in the sky helped me visualize it.

The stories are great and really represent the zodiac sign they represent. My fav was the Lion and the crab, because I’m a Leo and it resonated with me.

My favorite part was the idea of using the stories to help someone who is afraid of the dark. Whether you know someone who is afraid of the dark or enchanted by it, the characters they'll meet in the stories will engage and comfort them.

It was actually written by the author to her son who was afraid of the dark- it was her love letter to him and the sky she’s studied for many years.

I’m not an astrology studier by any means, but do love a good fable. The combination of the 2 make for some interesting and fascinating stories.

This is a great book that’s made up of 6 different stories (plus an introduction story at the start of the book about a boy named Taylor who’s up passed his bedtime. Then starts story number 1. Each story has 2 different zodiac signs, these would make great bedtime stories and each one has a lesson you can learn at the end. With a beautiful picture at the start of each story (fable) and one at the end showing what the signs look like as stars in the sky. It would make a great gift!

Thank you to Book Publicity Services for providing a review copy of this book. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Night Lights by Jeannie K. Johnson is the perfect bedtime story collection! I’d even bring it on a camping trip to read under the stars. It brought back memories of learning about the constellations at the local planetarium as a kid. Each fable includes two of the zodiac signs and tells a story of how they work together with each other. Children will quickly understand and make connections to the morals interlaced throughout the stories. One of the reasons why I love fables! In each story, someone is helping out someone else. It also has a calming mood, that children might find relaxing if their caregiver reads it before bedtime. Also if you are into astrology, you might want to start with your own or your child’s sign first to peak their interest.

Showing Kindness
The stories in Night Lights lend themselves to great discussions about kindness and consideration for other people. Some tales like “The Archer and The Scorpion” focus on helping someone out because they were kind to you first. Others like “The Scales and the Maiden” focus on the help of another as the young character discovers the importance of truth and balance.

Opportunities For Exploration
This book opens up lots of opportunities for children to become inquisitive about the constellations and the stories connected to them. Connecting the opportunity to stargaze in the countryside or taking a field trip to the planetarium would be an awesome way to follow up the reading of this book.

Six stories of the twelve Zodiac signs continue to amaze us.

This book takes place in multiple situations involving Zodiac signs like Pisces and Aries. Read this book, which is chockful of inspiration and good lessons!

I was delighted to receive the book because it was about astrological signs! Fun fact: I’m a Pisces. What is your Zodiac sign?
This beautifully written book combines zodiac elements with meaningful fables.
The illustrations are lovely and have a sound color palette. There were a lot of plot twists, and the constellations of the zodiac signs were also at the end of each story.

My favorite story was The Twins and the Bull because I liked the mysterious and wise factor of the story.

The ram was a bit hotheaded. The two fish were clever. The water bearer was skillful. The goat was mysterious. The archer is kindhearted. The scorpion is grateful. The maiden was a good baker. The lion was hotheaded as well but got better. The crab was kind. The twins were aspiring explorers and competitive. The bull is wise.

Give this book to anyone interested in stories among the stars! With Light Nights, you will never be afraid of the dark anymore.

Thank you, Book Publicity Services, for gifting me a copy to review.

Inspired by signs of the zodiac, Night Lights is a beautiful book written by Jeannie K. Johnson with illustrations by Yoko Matsuoka.

There are six fables each thought provoking with meaningful life lessons, featuring two zodiac signs in each which show their strengths and weaknesses and how they work together.
I loved the illustrations of these star signs and how they appear in the night sky, and even learnt a lot about them myself!

The stories are meaningful and inspirational and remind me very much of my childhood days reading classic Aesop's Fables. They are perfect for helping young readers to overcome their fear of the dark, and the short stories - which are great to be read together, or alone - allow for lots of interesting conversations afterwards, as well as trying to spot the constellations in the night sky.

The important messages within, cover bravery, friendship, right and wrong yet did not detract from the overall 'bedtime' storytelling.

This is a really beautiful book mixing good old adventure stories, with fabulously informative astrology! I am now going to give this to our godchildren who will love it!

I would like to thank Kelsey @bookpublicityservices for the book Night Lights: Six Original Fables Inspired By The Zodiac by Jeannie K. Johnson. I was excited to receive the book because it says in the promotion the book is for readers eight and up and a read-to-me for 5-7 years old. This is the perfect age for both my grandsons who are interested in learning about space. Both boys are just learning to read so I read the book to them section by section. Both boys were fascinated in the stories and asked a lot of questions. However, they struggled with the length of each section without pictures. They did enjoy the stories and looked forward to each one. The boys liked the illustration of the constellations at the end of the chapter and even tried to paint their own zodiac constellations.

Author Jeannie K Johnson's son feared the dark, and to help ease his evening anxiety she introduced him to the wonders of the 🌌 night sky. She drew inspiration from this, the constellations and zodiac ♋ signs to create this collection of stories perfect for fans of mythology. Each of the six tales pairs two adjacent 👬 signs as characters 🐂 or themes, collectively covering concepts of friendship, vanity, ⚖️ balance, 🐏 stubbornness, and more.

As someone who has never shown any interest in the zodiac (but a deep appreciate for the night sky), I was entirely unsure what to expect from this collection but am pleasantly surprised. These short stories are written very similarly to the fables I read and loved as a child. The writing is very smooth and filled with just the right amount of enchantment and suspense for middle grade readers.

Brief summary: Young readers will read Zodiac-inspired fables that are new and modern interpretations of twelve constellations, paired together in six short stories: the Ram and the Fish, the Water Bearer and the Goat, the Archer and the Scorpion, the Scales and the Maiden, the Lion and the Crab, and the Twins and the Bull.

Comments: These fables are variants of the Roman/Greek constellation stories. They are original and inspired by the Zodiac.

Each chapter begins with a colorful illustration and ends with the constellation pairing.

This could be a read-aloud to young and older students.

A creative writing idea is reading aloud one of the stories and having students create their own modern fable of one of the constellations.

This is such a beautifully written book! My 8-year old and I have been enjoying it before bedtime over the last few weeks. When he was younger, he was frightened of the concept of "constellations," but this book has put that fear to rest. Inside are 6 completely original fables, inspired by the Zodiac:

The Ram and the Fish (Aries and Pisces)
The Water Bearer and the Goat (Aquarius and Capricorn)
The Archer and the Scorpion (Sagittarius and Scorpio)
The Scales and the Maiden (Libra and Virgo)
The Lion and the Crab (Leo and Cancer)
The Twins and the Bull (Gemini and Taurus)

The stories are long enough to feel substantial, but not too long that they make bedtime last forever. The illustrations are gorgeous, too!

I absolutely love this book! It contains informational texts with amazing stories. I've always been curious about the zodiac and their fascinating tales from my own childhood, and reading this book to my kids in bed as a nighttime story brings me so much joy. Additionally, it features colorful yet cozy illustrations. Even my 9-year-old daughter, Little_Reading_Wizard mentioned how the pictures make her feel comforted.

These six original stories are woven together with intrigue, interesting characters, and valuable lessons. The astrological ties are an added bonus.

Each story is bookended with illustrations: the beginning one offering a visual of the scene, and the one at the end a depiction of the constellation in the night sky. Because each story is 10-15 pages of picture-less text, this is a definitely a book for older children.

This was a lovely book to introduce children to fables, zodiac signs and the art of storytelling. My kids, ages 5 and 7, really enjoyed it. We broke it up and read 1 or 2 stories each night. I will say the word to picture ratio definitely makes this a book for kids with stamina in listening to stories so keep that in mind!

I was beyond surprised at how much my six year old son and I enjoyed this book. It took us a few nights to get through it, working on one story at a time, but we thoroughly loved it. Thank you for introducing us to stories about astrology we had no clue existed. It gave us a new topic to bond over and discuss!
