Kids learn the ABCs of belonging and expand their view of themselves and their community. B Is for Belonging uses the ABCs as an accessible framework to explore the importance of belonging. Understanding and learning about belonging helps kids boost their self-confidence, build positive relationships, and foster empathy and inclusion. " Aa. When you accept other people without judging them or asking them to change, you help them know that they belong. Bb. When you are welcomed and loved exactly as you are, you feel that you belong ." Making a distinction between "belonging" and "fitting in," B Is for Belonging empowers kids to show acceptance for others and themselves and create communities of belonging. With an uplifting and positive tone, this book shares the power and joy of belonging. A section at the back of the book includes discussion questions and activity ideas.

Great book that teaches smaller school-age kiddos about compassion, empathy, and kindness. It takes the reader through the alphabet assigning each letter a word that pertains to a social skill surrounding belonging. It moves along at a pretty good clip for being 40 pages. The drawings, for the most part, pertain to the word being highlighted. Some of the drawings were a bit confusing (M for "mistakes" was a total miss) but most kids will overlook. There is an undercurrent through the story as well as the drawings about self-acceptance which I believe enriches the skills the book is trying to teach. There are activities for caregivers at the end of the book which really do a good job of explaining how to use this book to its fullest. Definitely a great addition to any classroom. Valuable lessons that every child should learn when starting school.
This inspiring picture book starts off by explaining the difference between “belonging” and “fitting in.” While the latter sometimes requires kids to change themselves in order to feel like they are part of a group, the former is about being oneself and finding others that are accepting of who they already are. The book continues on, following an A to Z structure, showing various ways kids can be the best versions of themselves both by accepting themselves and accepting others, just as they are. The illustrations are bright and cheerful and the extensive back matter, geared toward teachers, counselors and care givers, offers exercises and activities to help strengthen understanding of the concepts shown throughout the book. A beautiful book for anyone hoping to raise empathetic, helpful, and kind little humans.
As a child immigrant and a person who has struggled with feeling like I belong for most of my life, this book really had an impact on me. I can imagine many children like I was reading this book and thinking about the difference between belonging and fitting in and how one doesn't have to lose oneself, one's culture or one's language to belong. I think this would be a wonderful addition to any classroom, especially those classrooms that include a diversity of children, including those who may come from various linguistic and cultural backgrounds. The illustrations are very cute and fun to look at, enhancing the spirit of the text and adding to the appeal of the book as a whole. I highly recommend for any family or classroom as a clever spin on an ABC book that promotes empathy, kindness and thoughtfulness.
