Fangirl, Vol. 4: The Manga

Rate this book
The heartwarming final volume in the manga adaptation of the beloved novel by Rainbow Rowell!

Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, everybody is a Simon Snow fan, but for Cath, being a fan is her life. Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath just can’t let go…

Cath and Levi are officially dating—finally!—but Cath still has a lot on her plate as the end of freshman year approaches. She only has a few more weeks to save her grade in Fiction Writing, her twin sister, Wren, is acting increasingly reckless, and an unexpected reunion with her mother has thrown everything off-balance. Plus, with the release date for the last Simon Snow novel looming, Cath is struggling to focus on anything except finishing her epic fanfiction—including her relationship with Levi.

In this final volume of Fangirl , Cath must decide whether finding her own path forward means walking away from Simon Snow for good.

It’s been 10 years since I first read Fangirl back in 2014. Since then I’ve reread the book four or maybe five times, and this manga series has meant so much to me. To be able to relive this story again and again is so comforting. Cath is one of my most relatable characters of all time, and I adore this story with my whole heart. Being in Cath’s head feels like being in my own head, and there’s very few characters I can say that about. I love this manga series and I hope someday soon to reread this entire series again and again the way I have with the physical book 🥹💖

Infinity stars!

I will never stop loving 'Fangirl'

I also wouldn't mind if the author ever decides in the future to write about Cath & Levi when they're adults and live together happily and lovingly. 🥹

I know Wren is going to be on this volume's cover, but imagine how beautiful it'll be if they go with a pink or purple cover.

Reading any version of Fangirl is like a giant and warm hug. I love this manga series adaptation so much: it captured the novel almost exactly as I saw it in my head. I'm sad it's over but glad all 4 books are out so I can reread in whole whenever my heart desires.

I loved the fourth and final installment of the 'Fangirl' manga. This is such a comfort read and it was great to re-read this story in a different way. I loved the art and watching the book come to life in this way.

Final volume!

This will never be my favorite graphic novel adaptation, but it certainly is pleasant and comfy to settle into. Some nice Midwestern teen angst.

this story is the one i've reread the most, and yet i bawled my eyes out reading the final volume of this manga series. Cath's feelings and thoughts were so close to mine when i was a teenager, and i still feel very close to her in a lot of ways. It's like reading about a younger version of myself, knowing she ended up okay. It's like a hug to my past self.
Levi is, as always, a top character for me. He's pure sunshine and the drawings depicted that perfectly.
i just love this story and this world so much, it's still my comfort book, and the manga version did not disappoint.

This is the fourth and final volume of the manga version of Fangirl.

I did really enjoy seeing this iconic book told this way. Although I didn’t love having the story split in four with each book releasing so far apart. But other than that the illustrations were great. And the story worked very nicely in this format.

The novel is such a cozy read for me and the manga has all the same vibes. Levi is the best kind of golden retriever book boyfriend and Cath has so much growth over the course of the story.

27/09/2024: Dear future self, if you read this review a few years from now I want to ask you where life took you. This book is one that you keep coming back to, finding comfort in a character that is you down to a t. Reading this release after a sad week and being left with a heavy heart you read about one of your favorite-most romance stories out there. Of how someone was seen and listened to and wasn’t shamed for all the things that made her insecure. I want to know how things progressed from this very moment onward to a later date. Because I am Fangirl, just a much as you are Fangirl. This book is the rawest version of ourselves and it makes me hope for a love as beautiful and effortless as Cath’s and Levi’s — this is a warm hug in a pocket of time that is marked by my insecurities. Much like how Cath starts out at the novel, only to end here. This book is a reminder that loving something deeply and feeling emotions in a big way isn’t bad, it means you care. And that taking your time with things is perfectly okay. I hope it’s nice where you are and that you reread this manga and the book a million times over since now.

To say that this book is my favorite book of all time is an understatement. It is a book that brings me comfort to an extent I cannot describe. No novel or character has understood me as profoundly as Fangirl and Cath have. I demand a mini series to be made of it on some streaming website. For me to get all the Fangirl merch. Thank you, Rainbow Rowell, for writing this. For reminding me that writing is my passion; that love will make itself clear to you not as something you have to demand, but something that is readily available in people without having to ask for it; how life will turn around for the better and how the leaving of one’s comfort zone can bring wonderful things. Thank you, for giving me this book — it’s the one story that I always come back to.

I was nervous going into this volume because it's the last one. I didn't want the ending to get all fucked up, but I was surprised to find myself crying at the end. This book means so much to me and I'm elated that the graphic adaptations were done this well. They nailed every character, every plot point, and all of the nostalgic feelings that I was craving from this read. I didn't start crying until I read the acknowledgements from Rainbow at the end. It's cozy, it's sweet, has one of my favorite book boyfriends ever, highlights the craziness of college life, and inspired me to write. I think Fangirl has such a special place in my heart because I was a kid when I read this and I was actively writing every day, just like Cath. Now I'm in my early thirties and I haven't typed a coherent word in a decade. *Cracks fingers* Maybe that'll change.

Thank you to Edelweiss+ and the publisher for giving me early access in exchange for an honest review! 4.5 star? Idk.
I should have reread everything, since this picks up right where vol. 3 left off. I did ok, though!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, since this is an Official Review: the manga is better than the og novel (sorry), and is definitely the way to read/reread it; it has all of the good stuff and (mostly) none of what made me cringe. Also? Levi was born to be a manga character. Also also the art is very good!
Anyway, now is the perfect time to start the series; with all four volumes out you can binge it without having to worry about cliffhangers leaving you, well, hanging.

The idea to turn this into a manga was brilliant. The medium lends itself perfectly for this story. I loved the illustrations by Gabi Nam and loved seeing the sections from the Simon Snow fanfic. It’s never confusing and those parts stand out with the black borders. I like how it was nicely paced in these four volumes. I wish there was more! Sam Maggs did such a good job adapting this story as well. Levi continues to be the most thoughtful, caring and charming man in existence. Being able to visually see him on page is such a treat. These four volumes are all so nicely done and totally worth adding to your collection. I hope more of these manga adaptations continue because this one was just perfect.

Special thanks to VIZ Media for sharing this manga with me in exchange for my honest review.

I want Rainbow Rowell to do for Cath(er) and Levi what Magicath did for Simon and Baz - CARRY ON! I want to know what happens to Cath and Levi, in manga form, beyond Fangirl. I want one slim, cozy, slice-of-life volume of their summer after Cath's freshman year. I need them taking road trips from Omaha to Arnold, talking over leisurely breakfasts and copious cups of coffee, going to farmers' markets and cooking together. I need them cuddled on Levi's antique couch, watching movies on Cath's laptop, having deep, meaningful conversations and silly banter. I need more Levi whispering, "Read to me, sweetheart" and far more falling in love.

I’m both obsessed with the original story and now the manga adaptations. I love seeing the characters come through life in the art and just revisiting the story in a different way.

This story always hits close to home because I connect with Cather so much. I used to be very shy and timid and I still get nervous with new things. But once you find your people, it gets easier to open up and you WANT to open up. I will always come back to this story.

Thank you to the publisher for this free eARC! All opinions are my own

I read the regular version of this book before reading the manga version, but it's been a while. As far as I can remember, it follows the original fairly well. It ended too fast! I wanted more! #Edelweiss+

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it just didn’t hit the same as the ending of the original book. Which is ok, it’s its own version but it was just not as exciting to read as the last three. Still enjoyed it enough though!❤️
