The Clique is a psychological thriller that follows Cassandra Harlow who's an overworked lawyer in a prestigious top tier law firm. Cassandra is determined to make partner and when one of her colleagues suspiciously commits suicide off their work building, Cassandra finds herself crossing paths with a high society group of women who assure her they can give her the tools to climb the corporate ladder.

This story had so much potential and it did intrigue me at the start, despite it's slow pace. I was impressed by the level of detail the author went into not only with the legal concepts, but just general office lingo and workplace dynamics.

That's the extent of the positive things I can say about this book. In my opinion, it just dragged on for far too long that I lost interest. The high society aspect was a good concept — I love reading about unhinged women, however, I didn't care about any of the characters enough to maintain interest in this alone. The author heavily relies upon stereotypes and I found the plot twists predictable. I was going to give this 3 stars, however, the ending was disappointing. Towards the end, the characters actions made no sense and contradicted the storyline. It felt like the ending was just made up as the author went.

Overall, the storyline had great prospects for a debut book, it was just let down by the execution. People that have worked in law firms or offices might get a kick out of this one!

This title will be available on 1 August 2024.

Arc Review
Publishing Date- 8/1/2024
My Rating- 2.85 Stars.

Is the author an attorney? Because she nailed the drama and the misogyny running rampant in a law firm setting.

What To Expect/Context Warnings-
⚖️Unhinged Ladies Behaving Badly
⚖️Secret Society
⚖️Talks Of Suicide
⚖️Drugs
⚖️Unwanted Sexual Advances

My Thoughts-
This was an interesting read. The premise captured my attention but the execution lacked. The pacing did fall flat for me, it’s a slow burn book. But once the things started to pick up and more secrets unfolded it was a quick finish. I nailed who the killer was about 70 % in. The ending was very underwhelming lol. I think I went into this book with my hopes too high.

Thanks for the Buddy Read Bestie Paige 💖

The definition of an addictive popcorn thriller, Rhiannon Barnsley’s debut novel, The Clique had my attention straight off the block. With an ever ratcheting pace, a dynamite narrator, and plenty of stunning twists and turns, the plot took me on quite the rollercoaster ride of suspense. But it was the deftly obscured clues piled on top the long list of potential suspects that had me flying through the pages. Needless to say, it was an utter home run all things considered.

The characters ran the gamut from utterly detestable to a few I found myself rooting for no ifs, ands, or buts. That’s not to say that I didn’t look upon them all with suspicion. Up to and including Cass herself. Despite her strong, precocious nature, there were a few moments where her actions had me giving her the side-eye for sure. More than anything, though, I was in awe of the long list of mysterious individuals who enticed me into falling headlong into this plot from beginning to end.

There were only a few teeny, tiny flies in the ointment. Requiring me to suspend all disbelief, there were plenty of over-the-top scenes—especially that blisteringly fast-paced climax. On top of that, the end felt rushed and rather abrupt. Perhaps that was down to me wanting a bigger glimpse into the thrills and chills as the sinister vibe took hold, but I still wanted…well…more. Including, of course, a resolution to the one unfinished plot line that will likely bug me long after closing the cover.

All said and done, however, this quick, easy read was stuffed to the brim with rising foreboding and unending suspense. It also dealt with the often all too true reality that women face at the apex of the corporate world. From misogyny to sexual assault, there were a few serious topics touched on within these pages, so be sure to check out my trigger warning before diving in. Ultimately, though, the intriguing characters and compelling plot pulled me in deep. After all, it was, without a doubt, one rollicking good time. Rating of 4.5 stars.

Great debut. 3.5 stars rounded up. As in my 20% status update, if you're looking for an accurate depiction of life as a top tier commercial lawyer, this is a book to check out. On top, loads of mystery, bit of suspense and thriller-ish parts.

I would never have requested this eARC if I knew I'd be reading about work (I read to escape it instead 🙃). However, as an ARC I persisted and was not disappointed.

Plot was interesting, not unrealistic to think there may be secret women societies helping women progress and rise up in an industry that has been for so long men at the top. Also most certainly not unrealistic for men to try cover up and victim blame SA reported by women in this space to protect men or clients.

My qualms resulting in a reduced rating were the repetitiveness in parts and stating the obvious - I wish authors wouldn't assume readers can't figure things out. I also think the writing can improve quite a bit. However, it is a debut, it was enjoyable enough and I would check out this author's work again (assuming it's not in the law space).

From my short notes: I picked one twist, but other aspects still surprised me. Was super engaged toward the end and "couldn't put it down".

Please check TWs online, of note is suicide. Unfortunately, this book refers to individuals "committing suicide". Suicide isn't a crime anymore and it isn't appropriate to say committed before suicide. It is now referred to as suicided or died by suicide. You've probably seen me write this in a review before and I'm really hoping the publisher takes on the feedback and corrects before PD (6 June 2024).

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for my honest review.

A fabulous debut from Rhiannon Barnsley. I do enjoy a twisty thriller and this was a fast, popcorn thriller that so raced through. While I guessed some of the twists, others shocked me and kept me turning those pages. While this is a fun read, it does cover some dark themes of suicide, murder, inequality in the workplace for women and more. Just go with what happens and be entertained.

Cass is a high flying corporate lawyer who is working all the hours in hopes of becoming a partner. When her friend and colleague Sara seems to have jumped from the roof to her death, Cass is not convinced. It begins a dangerous journey into a secret society for women l whee things are not what they seem.

I look forward to seeing what this author has for us next. Thanks so much to Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter for my advanced copy of this book to read. Publishes on August 1st.

Despite the inequalities within the workplace, high-flying lawyer Sara O'Neil has it all. She has the money, the power, and the career; and is on track to make partner in a prestigious firm. That's why everyone is confused when seemingly out of nowhere, she climbs to the terrace rooftop and jumps to her death. Her co-worker and friend, Cassandra, doesn't believe that Sara would end her life and decides to find out what really happened to her. Cass discovers Sara was part of an elite networking club for professional women and plans to infiltrate the group to reveal the secrets behind Sara's death, and there begins a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse.

-

The Clique was certainly a fun read. Although originally I struggled to get into the book due to its slow start, it really picked up in the last half of the book and I devoured it in one sitting. There were a few predictable twists but also some that I didn't see coming. Overall, it was a fun read I just couldn't get over how unrealistic the ending felt. I also found there weren't really any characters that I found memorable or relatable which is another factor that let it down as there was nobody to really root for or care about. Still, it was an enjoyable reading experience and I can see people liking this book if they're into the genre.

This is one of those great books that takes the idea of a clique and runs with it until you are exhausted (in a good way)! Cass and Sara are part of a mostly male law-firm that expects their attorneys to work long hours with little free time. But suddenly Sara jumps to her death from their highest floor and Cass is dumbfounded as it seemed Sara was happy and "had it all." Then when wealthy client, Seb becomes aggressive at a client lunch and forces himself on her, she reports him and is fired--with only three months to find something else. Devastated, Cass is also leery when she gets an invitation to "Inside," an all-female club that is rumored to be so selective that she'll have to pass whatever test they throw at her before she can be admitted. And so begins the craziness: a cat-and mouse game that has her head spinning as she fights for her dignity--and her life!

I found this to be a decent read, though a bit unrealistic. It centers on Cass, whose friend and mentor Sara jumps to her death with seemingly nothing leading up to it. Cass finds out that Sara was part of an elite women’s empowerment group that seems just a little too good to be true, and makes a plan to infiltrate the group so she can find out what really happened.

The story was fast paced and the author didn’t mind killing people off (which always adds nicely to the suspense), but there were so many things that were just unrealistic to me. Cass seemed far too naive to be a lawyer this far along in her career, and some things just fell into place a little too easily. I also finished the book not fully understanding the motivations behind some of the decisions that were made.

Overall, it was a fast and fun read but you’ll have to suspend your disbelief for this one. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

What would you do to move ahead in your job? What is you were blocked at every angle by the old boy's club? Cassie is in that very situation after working long long days at her law firm. Worse yet, a mentor/friend of hers seems to have jumped to her death. When another colleague mentions a secret club of women professionals, Cassie decides to apply.

She finds out very quickly that her recently deceased friend Sarah was a member and the club is no joke. There are multiple interviews and clandestine meetings - very cloak and danger, very impressive and very intimidating.

Cassie begins to wonder exactly what happened to Sarah - was it a suicide, or was it something else that had to do with the Clique! Thrilling and fast paced, this is one you don't want to miss.

ARC for review. To be published June 6, 2024.

Cassandra Harlow is horrified to see her friend and colleague Sara O’Neil fall from their office rooftop. Apparently she jumped, but why when she had everything, a partnership and tons of money? The only people who might know the reason are the members of a secret society of professional women who promise to kick careers into high gear. But is that why Sara died? Cassandra wants to find out.

I’m a lawyer and it’s clear the author is too, she nailed being an associate and that part of the book was very good. However it was a bit long. Plus, as to Inside, influence peddling? Sure. Selling bodies? Didn’t buy that. And there was a plot hole that an attorney should have caught. But it was OK.

Wow! What a well written story.

Let me tell you the description of this book does not even come close to preparing you for all the drama, intrigue, and mystery that surrounds the people in this book. I actually wasn't sure I wanted to read this book based on the description but I am so glad I did. I didn't want to put it down, but this thing called work (ugh) got in the way of that. : ) I was even late returning from lunch because I lost track of time while reading.
The ending really surprised me though.

I will say if suicide, drugs, and/or sexual assault are triggers for you, I would proceed carefully.

Cassandra Harlow is an exceptional lawyer at top law firm, however, she is struggling with her role in a predominantly male company. She has to work twice as hard as her male counterparts and unfortunately, all her hard work never seems to cut it. Cass looks up to her colleague and friend/mentor, Sara O'Neil, who is on track to becoming partner. When Sara dies, Cass automatically knows something is wrong. She knows her friend would never kill herself. Cass starts to dig for the truth and learns her friend was part of an elite female only members club. Secrets start unfolding, and it becomes clear that this clique is a dark secret society and might also be the cause of Sara's death.

This book is a great book that focuses heavily on misogyny and inequality in the workplace. The setting is perfect, and the characters, although not memorable, were still good. Unfortunately, the pacing didn't always feel steady, falling flat more often than I would have liked. It did pick up later on in the book, however, which helped bring the book into a great closing.
Great storyline with great twists! 4 stars!

Thank you NetGalley, HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter, and Rhiannon Barnsley for this compelling ARC!

Dunno about you but the title attracted me, I didn’t read any blurb at all, the words ‘The Clique’ were enough

But its way way more than I thought

Think ‘The Firm’ alongside Suits but kinda darker….well much darker

Add a ‘secret society’ for the top 100 women in the business world and then one of them dying that creates an opening for someone new to join ( with a while process to go through ) and you are ready for this really entertaining and well written debut

Be prepared to be shocked at the levels of misogyny and corruption within the world of top lawyer companies and the underhand lengths the bosses are prepared to go to keep the illusion of perfection going

A great one sitting read full of murky going on’s and easy to read characters

It can’t really be like this in those tall metal and glass bastions of wealth….can it??

This was quite a good debut from Rhiannon Barnsley. I was invested in the storyline throughout and while it did drag on a bit at times, I was still interested enough to keep going until the end. However, the ending was a bit sudden and I did hope for more. The author's writing style is fantastic though and I am already looking forward to reading what she writes next.

4 ⭐️📖 A lawyer falls to her death from the roof of her important law firm. Was it an accident? Murder? Suicide? This book has the law firm environment reminiscent of 𝘚𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘴, mixed with the intrigue of a secret society, and the twists of a classic thriller. That was all right up my alley! However, some of the plot was unrealistic and a litttlllee too convenient.

This book focuses on what the lives of high level lawyers are really like and what they have to endure to achieve their career ambitions and goals. It initially starts off a little slow but then the pace soon really picks up.

On the surface it seems that Sara O'Neil has it all, a prestigious life as a high flying lawyer and supposedly the world at her feet, that is until Sara jumps to her death from the roof top of the company's office. An absolutely tragic event for all that knew her and worked with her. Life as a lawyer in this environment is not easy, burnout, constant fears of not being good enough and a job that takes over these employees lives, they literally breathe work twenty four hours a day. Why did Sara feel this was the only avenue she could take, was it just because of the constant stress and pace of her life while trying to make partner with the organisation?

Her close workmate Cass cannot comprehend this situation and does not believe that Sara would have taken her own life, she then begins to investigate what she feels are suspicious circumstances. Cass then has her own issues, a very wealthy client of the firm bails her up in a woman's toilet at a meeting and makes sexual advances towards her, she reacts by slapping him in the face, well deserved but now she has huge problems, he takes his revenge by telling her company partner's lies about her. Cass is not believed when interviewed by the firm as to why she behaved in this manner, this then leads to her employment being terminated. While all this is going Cass discovers that Sara was involved with a secret group who supposedly are able to enhance the careers of these highly intelligent women. she then decides she must endeavor to become a member as she feels the answers regarding Sara's death may lay with them.

An absolute page turner, I was immediately taken in by the story and found it really hard to put this book down. Mystery, suspence and outright danger keep the book moving along and the reader hangs on every page waiting to see how this will resolve, will Cass find evidence of what has contributed to Sara's loss of life and will those involved face consequences?

Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. Five stars.

Rhiannon Barnsley's debut novel, The Clique, is a gripping thriller set against the backdrop of a toxic workplace. I was hooked from start to finish. The setting, characters, and toxic work environment created a compelling narrative.

While I loved the storytelling and plot, the pacing and plot development had some issues. The first half of the book focuses on Cass's toxic workplace, while the second half shifts to her involvement with the secret society. Once the secret society takes precedence, the workplace narrative fades into the background. By the end, there's no resolution regarding Cass's career and how she handles her toxic workplace, leaving the ending incomplete.

Regarding the secret society, though it began intriguingly, the conclusion felt somewhat far-fetched. The rapid sequence of events towards the end created a mismatched pacing that could have been avoided by trimming unnecessary details from the first half of the story.

Overall, Rhiannon Barnsley's The Clique is a promising debut in the mystery and thriller genre. With its compelling plot and intriguing characters, it captivates from start to finish. While there are some pacing issues and unresolved storylines, Barnsley's talent for storytelling shines through, making this a noteworthy first novel. I look forward to reading her future works.

‘The Clique’ by Rhiannon Barnsley is a clever and dark thriller which follows lawyer Cass as she navigates working in a patriarchal environment and coping with the loss of her mentor Sara. The story begins with Sara’s death - initially written off as a suicide caused by work-related stress (the author who is herself a corporate lawyer definitely drives home just how stressful and exhausting the job is!) but later investigated by the police who think something even more sinister happened. Cass also can’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t right in the lead up to Sara’s final day…

When her colleague Nat reveals that Sara was part of a secret female-only society, Cass wonders whether that group hold the key to the mystery. Since spots only open up when members leave… or die, Cass decides that now might be the time for some digging. As her situation changes at work, she meets a man she likes and is drawn deeper into the secretive club, her life becomes more dramatic… but is her life in danger?

I really couldn’t put this book down and read it in one sitting… the office environment was tense and disturbing even before the real drama started, and the raw descriptions of the treatment of women in the workplace and the outward-facing focus on mental health while piling unreasonable workloads on Associates rang true. The club itself sounded tempting - empowering and elevating women by creating a strong network to counteract the influence of old boys’ clubs and male dominance on company boards - so it was thrilling to glimpse inside and ponder whether it was too good to be true. The plot was twisty and intriguing, with a few shocking moments.

I liked Cass, she was easy to relate to and sympathise with and was clearly a very smart and capable woman. George was also an interesting addition to the book and I enjoyed the evolution of their relationship.

This gets five stars from me!

This was an enjoyable and solid debut from Rhiannon Barnsley. A slow burner to start but the pace increases as the story unfolds. Some good twists along the way which lead to a decent ending. Misogyny and inequality are the main topic in the story and there are some truly unlikeable characters in this but they do help give the story some realism as there are moments in the book that you may have to suspend belief with. All in all this was a great read especially in the latter half

This was almost at the point of being a farce.

The novel starts with Cass explaining her life. Until 40% all Cass does is tell you how stressful, terrible and awful her life is. To be fair there appears to be nothing in her life that is good but while having all the self awareness in the world to her troubles she just keeps plugging to make things worse.

Then! An event happens at her work (not related to the main plot) and what the author has chosen to do here is impossible to recover from. You cannot put a woman in a predatory situation and elicit sympathy as a work around for character development, it’s poor and it’s really bad form. I’ve finished reading this on international women’s day and I’m appalled we use sexual assault as an easy anchor rather than writing better.

Luckily for us the plot continues and Cass is told very clearly to “Trust no one”. Reader she ignores this. She trusts random people who come in to her life.

This is just not a book that shows how intelligent women can be.

Sara O’Neil, a high flying lawyer, unexpectedly jumped to her death. Meanwhile, colleague Cass is shocked as she seemed to have it all. Why did she jump? Is it possible an elusive secret society knows the answer?

I really enjoyed this one and found the cult like demeanour of the women’s member society fascinating. The book covers important themes, such as the women’s place in the corporate world and how they can be unfairly treated, as well as mental health issues. The environment was written in a tense, believable way.

By the half way point I found myself paranoid and glued to the pages. The characters were well written and I rooted for Cass. I also found that there were a few good twists which I didn’t see coming. This is one I will be recommending and I look forward to reading another by this author if this is anything to go by. An original, enjoyable thriller. 4.5 stars. Really intense book with truly chilling thriller themes. Enjoyed the whole ride, although I did take a break half way through because I was actually getting stressed out! Thought the ending was funny.

Synopsis (no spoilers):
Cass is a successful lawyer on track to becoming partner soon, even though she faces a lot of challenges with sexist ideals in the workplace, to call it a boys club is an understatement. Cass's coworker / mentor / friend, Sara, dies unexpectedly. It appears as if she jumped off the roof of her office building but Cass is not so sure. Nat, Cass's officemate and only other friend, starts telling her about a women only organization, similar to an old boy's club, where women can actually have the chance at moving upward in their careers. It's a secret society, in which they only have 100 members. No one ever leaves the organization, unless they pass away. With Sara's recent death, Inside is now recruiting for its newest member. Nat fills Cass in on all of this and that Sara was a member. She thinks nothing of it until, through a totally unfair and egregious interaction with a client, left her without a job, where she is allowed to work her three month notice, but it's not without a lot of difficulty.

Nat and Cass both decide to apply to Inside and they both are selected for a few rounds of the interviews. Cass has also started up a relationship for the first time in years. Although she lost her job, she can find another, has a budding new relationship, and still has her best friend, plus she might even get in on Inside. Until the nagging thought that Sara's death was not a suicide overtakes her and compels her to start investigating the case.

She lies, gets caught in lies, finds out terrifying truths, and faces her own mortality.

Positives:
- the book was written in such a way that I felt actual anxiety when Cass was going through certain obstacles. I am an avid thriller reader and very rarely does a book have this kind of power over me. This book is a true thriller.
- Cass is relatable to someone who has a high stress job and especially relatable to any woman who has experienced any sexual advances she said no to. These parts were written in a horrific way that felt very real and still maintained the dignity of the character. I respect that a lot.
- The ending may not be everyone's cup of tea but I thought it was a very funny ending.

Critiques:
- I felt like it took a while for all of her life to fall apart and unravel for it to be such a quick wrap up. I feel like if she gained better understanding at every step, I would believe in her drive for the truth more, but I feel like she knew almost nothing till the very end and that bothered me. A rational person wouldn't have kept at it with so little to go on.
- I did not like how Talia got away with it without anything being held against her. Then she wrote a fake book about it. It seemed really convenient. Although, the funny ending wouldn't have happened without it.

I picked up this book as I found the premise incredibly intriguing. And sure enough, once I started to read, I found it very hard to stop and finished it in an entire weekend.

Unfortunately, it was not the story I had envisioned.

The protagonist Cassandra is a 2-dimensional, naive person, which doesn't seem believable in a corporate lawyer working at one of the so-called best firms in London. There is a pretty nasty sexual harassment scene with one of her clients, which when she refuses his advances by rightfully slapping him results in him not only having her fired, but blacklisted and badmouthed to every single law-firm in the country. Her law firm is rife with sexism, bullying and stupidly exhausting working hours. Immediately, I thought: burn that place down. So obviously I was excited when Cass and her friend Nat were invited to an ultra secretive society of women that would help other women rise to the top of their potential.

I had expected the society - named Inside - to be a feminist organisation that helps take down corrupt male dominated organisations and bad men. Sadly, it was not the case. The death of a woman Cass was close to is connected to Inside. And it turns out this clique of women is in fact a front for nasty drug lords and high-ranking criminals. And rough up and kill any woman who tries to take them down. The reason for this according to the main female villain? Because society never expect women to be criminals.

This reminded me of the film Widows by Steve McQueen, where Viola Davis's character explains that as women, no one will suspect them doing any criminal dealings. Except that the women in that movie robbed from rich people because they were truly desperate. Some had kids to take care of, others would lose their money and their house as well as being in truly physical danger.
In the case of Inside, they simply use sexism as a way to get more power and wealth and nothing else, and manipulate, betray and traffik their own members to get what they want, and kill those who go against them.

Its message of feminism is completely screwed. Even though by the end, Cass is in a much better place, the corruption inside her chauvinistic law firm is exposed by her journalist boyfriend while she recovers at home. Both the hero and the villains don't seem to be very smart and they lack a good amount of depth to make them memorable characters.

But, despite all that, its hook worked, and it was nice to get my teeth in a new thriller.

The law offices of Carrey and Watson are shocked when they learn that one of their up and coming lawyers, Sara O’Neil, 34, has fallen from the rooftop of their office building and is now dead. Sara and two of her best friends, Cass and Nat, all started at the office at the same time and her friends are now devastated. The office requires that to make partner, one must make the work their entire life spending long hours in the office to impress. They figure that since Sara has been working so hard that it harmed her personal life and may have resulted in her possible suicide.

One evening, Cass has to join a group of the partners and a very wealthy client to celebrate his win on something. Cass hates this because she is the only woman. The client is very drunk and insists that she drink more. Later, he accosts her in the bathroom and she slaps him. He tells her bosses that she teased him and then assaulted him and she is now fired. The bosses know that’s not true but they will do anything to keep the wealthy client. Cass chooses to work her notice time instead of leaving right away because she needs the money.

Nat tells Cass about a private group called Inside where Sara had been a member. It is an exclusive society of female lawyers, bankers, entrepreneurs, and scientists. They limit the number of members to 100. With Sara’s death, there is an opening. So, Nat and Cass both apply. But as Cass learns more about the group along with some secret information Sara left her, she is beginning to wonder if her death could have been linked with Inside.

Wow! This is a really good book that kept me on the edge of my seat. It says too that not all women are there for one another. There is probably more competition among women than men. But, that’s just my opinion. But, do read this one and enjoy!
