Tales of Wonder and Woe #1

A Story Spun in Scarlet

LET ME TELL YOU A STORY…

AUDRA JASHOWIN is a storyteller without a purpose.

When all the tales in the land of Mithra-Sha lost their endings, Audra fled from her family’s rejection and the only home she ever knew. Now, with a sense of veiled danger haunting her heels and her life as devoid of direction as her stories, she arrives at long last in a city of fresh starts and second chances.

There, she finds an adventure greater than she ever dreamed.

JAIK GRISSOM might be the key to bringing back the power of all stories.

A simple farmhand with a way around weapons, Jaik possesses more than a sharp wit that sets Audra’s soul aflame. He’s a natural amplifier with the talent to breathe life into her tales…into all the tales in Mithra-Sha.

Chased from their comfortable lives by a stroke of ill luck on a fateful night, Audra and Jaik embark on a journey for answers—through the wilderness and over the raging sea, to the heart of storytelling itself. Along the way, the strange bond between them deepens as they begin to uncover a mystery that lurks beneath all the broken tales, written in the shroud of their own unlikely pasts.

To mend the fractured stories in Mithra-Sha, Audra and Jaik must learn to embrace what lives at the core of their own the bravery and brilliance, the loyalty and love, and the purpose and power they both harness—together and apart.

And they must face a terrible truth penned between the pages of their quest…a tragedy that will change the course of history and rewrite the ending of their tale forever.

let me tell you a story...

this book was absolutely magical. a stunning story about stories.
i went in with fairly low expectations because of the length and the synopsis, although interesting, was a bit confusing? to me + the first couple of chapters were a bit slow and didn't really grip me, but i'm so glad i pushed through because it got so much better and i quite literally could not put it down. it's long but the pages fly by. (also, the cover is stunning)
i am quite literally destroyed and i already know it's gonna be my top read of this month. the ending had me sobbing actual tears. why was this so good???

✧ brief summary.
audra jashowin is a storycrafter in a world run off the power of stories. for some unknown reason, all storycrafters have lost the ability to end their tales, throwing the world into disarray. rejected and cast away by her family and friends, she travels from village to village in hope of finding an answer as to why this is happening. until one night, when she's telling a story at a bar, locks eyes with a mysterious farmhand, aaaaand... finishes her story. hence begins the adventure !! (i promise it's better than i made it sound i'm shit at summaries)

✧ plot.
ABSOLUTELY INSANE. the worldbuilding?? the magic system?? it was actually so unique and refreshing. seriously never read anything like it. this book is very much high fantasy so it could be a bit confusing at first but it got a lot easier as the chapters went on. i loved the whole magical system built around stories and luck being a whole thing in this book. the pacing was great, which is a lot coming from me given that my top complaint about books is usually "the pacing was off :/" lmao. if you're looking for a fast-paced book, this is not for you but i loved the slower pace, it really allowed the characters and plot to shine through clearly instead of feeling rushed.

i loved the little stories woven in between, it was such a fun little surprise every time. i actually got goosebumps every time audra said "let me tell you a story". and how they interwined together into the ending? (iykyk) i was absolutely in awe. the quest vibes were so much fun and this is such an immersive book, like you can picture everything very clearly as it happens and honestly felt like i was in the book. there were so many twists and turns in this that left my jaw on the floor and obv not spoiling anything but that final plot twist near the end? i will NEVER recover.

✧ writing.
the writing was so poetic and enchanting, i seriously could not pick out quotes to put in my review because every line is quote-worthy. however, i did feel like it was a bit heavy at times. i often had to re-read some parts twice because i didn't comprehend it the first time. which is honestly my fault because i was studying for exams while reading this so my brain was fried 😭 the first few chapters took the brunt of it though, so it got better after the 10-ish chapter mark. still, i love purple prose when it's done right, and this was definitely that! the writing was so atmospheric and helped set the scenes perfectly.

✧ romance.
THE ROMANCE WAS SOSO CUTE OH MY GOD. audrajaik are literally soulmates. their love is so genuine and tender and their story definitely captured my heart. the strangers to friends to lovers trope was done so well and it's very much a slowburn so i didn't feel like the romance was rushed at all. i love them so so much and they better show up in the sequel !!

"all my life, i'd never felt anything like that. i don't have a single story to tell, but whatever's in me, whatever I'm made of...it knows you, too."

"us. there was an odd surety in that word. it always was us...sword and story."

✧ overall.
i'm so absolutely in awe of this beautiful story. the world and the magic system were so well developed, the characters all have distinct personalities and are lovable (except galan, he can die), the pacing was amazing, the writing is stunning and everything was tied together perfectly. i want so much more about this world and will definitely be seated for the sequel ! <3

the end.

This is a story about stories in a world cursed with fantastical beginnings but plagued with no endings.

We follow Audra, a disgraced storycrafter, on her long trek for purpose in her life now that there is no more magic in her craft. Disowned by her family and forsaken by her friends, she finds herself destitute and desperate to survive. Serving as a barhand, she encounters a situation where she needs to tell a story, knowing it won't have an ending. However, what she doesn't expect is Jaik to walk into the bar, giving her the ability to finally finish a story.

This isn't the first book I've read by Renee Dugan, but every time I do, I'm in total utter awe of her ability to write and craft. She takes the expression of "creative writing" and turns it on its head as the epitome of being a master storyteller herself. Her talent for words is enchanting, poetic, and lyrical, yet filled with description and emotion, making reading her work feel like seeing a piece of art unfold before you.

This, however, creates a small detriment to the story that I'm not sure everyone will appreciate. If you're looking for a fast plot, you won't find it in this tale. It's a slowly woven tapestry, filled with adventure, love, and twists and turns that made me gasp out loud. Like any woven work of art, it's not always clear where the image will go until the end. I found myself fumbling for understanding at the start but persevered because of the quality of the writing. I was truly hooked on the story by about 40% but often had to reread scenes as they were so full of details and sometimes abstract descriptions that I needed to concentrate to create the complex imagery in my mind.

Audra's life and struggles on her adventure are sometimes challenging to read; she has suffered so much and carries so much on her shoulders. But she doesn't let this stave off her determination to do right with her inherent sense to help those in need. Compassionate, loving, and kind, Audra has become a character deeply ingrained in my heart.

Jaik was the best quirky, protective, and perfect puzzle piece to everything that Audra was. They brought out the best in each other, with their sword and story. He allowed her to be vulnerable, to catch her when she would fall, and to help build her back up. His way to calm her down during panic attacks will stay with me for a while, and his funny quips and banter made me giggle out loud.

While the romance between the two wasn't at the forefront of this story, it was stunningly beautiful to see how these two developed from strangers thrust on the run to friends to lovers.

Overall, I'm in awe; this was beautifully written, and the world and magic system were so well-founded and unique, expertly tied into the masterful art of stories. I'm almost sad that this seems to be a standalone. I want more of this world and more of the magic-telling tales that can spin into being.
Edit: This is a standalone but there are SEQUENTIAL STANDALONES....meaning this is not the end of this world!!!!

If you love beautiful, lyrical, and descriptive writing akin to Roshani Chokshi and Erin Morgenstern, and you're a fan of traditional well-founded fantasy with excellent world-building, this is the book for you!

Trope Summary:
▶ Strangers to Friends to Lovers
▶ Only One Bed
▶ Only One Horse
▶ He does her hair (love this microtrope)
▶ Unique Magic System of Stories

finally an arc that i enjoyed (war is over)

: ̗̀➛ i. the plot

audra, a lost storyteller, seeks refuge in a new city after fleeing her home where stories lost their endings. there, she meets jaik, a farmhand with a talent for amplifying tales. together, they embark on a journey to restore storytelling power. as they uncover a mystery from their pasts, they must confront a tragic truth that will reshape their story forever. (probably the worst synopsis you’ve ever heard)

the plot was plotting. it was interesting and unique, each twist keeps you hooked, invested in what happens next, and that ending? it's emotional, to say the least (i was sobbing). the length of this book might seem intimating but trust me you will fly through it.

the writing style is simply beautiful and poetic, painting vivid images in your mind. i was fully immersed in this world.

· · ─── ·𖥸· ─── · ·

: ̗̀➛ ii. characters

audra is a character you can't help but admire. her strength and determination are inspiring, and you can't help but root for her. she's someone you can relate to, making her journey all the more compelling.

“i don’t want you to be perfect around me, audra. i just need you to be all right.”

jaik is the kind of guy you can't help but fall in love with. he was so caring and supportive towards audra even during the toughest times. he is the standard, so don’t settle for a guy who leaves you on delivered for a week.

· · ─── ·𖥸· ─── · ·

: ̗̀➛ iii. romance ౨ৎ
⤿ aka the best part 🤭

“here in the quiet, in jaik’s embrace, i did shatter. but i didn’t fall apart…he held the pieces gently, cradled them as carefully as he cradled me.”

“jaik grissom saw me. he saw the truth of me, not only as I was, but as I was becoming. and he fought for that as fiercely as he fought to keep us both alive. he fought to bring me to him, and to get back to me, whatever came against us. and he stayed.”

audra and jaik's relationship is the heart and soul of the story. their love is so genuine and heartfelt that it's impossible not to be swept away by it. audra is a force to be reckoned with, her strength and resilience shining through every obstacle she faces. yet, beneath her tough exterior lies a vulnerability that makes her all the more relatable. jaik, on the other hand, is the embodiment of kindness and compassion. together, their love is a beautiful blend of strength and tenderness, their bond deepening with each passing chapter. their relationship is built on mutual respect and understanding, a love story that captivates the heart and leaves a lasting impression.

I know! This looks like I gave this no chance, but I swear I tried 🥺
This is a pretty long book, so this is still about about 60 pages, buy it was ALL description. There was so little dialogue, and every page was just never-ending paragraphs of description, and that type of writing is just never for me.

It seemed like it could be an interesting story, and unfortunately I never made it to the MMC, but I felt like I was moving through molasses trying to read this and I just wasn't enjoying myself 😔

A Story Spun in Scarlet is a mesmerizing and enchanting tale full of adventure, rich writing, romance and a unique magic system.

In a world that has lost its ability to end stories, Audra is forced to leave the life she once loved and embark on a journey she never saw coming.

What I love about this book is that it feels like something I haven't read before. The magic is wrapped up in the ability to weave a good story. Its one of those books that feels like a book within a book and I think those are my favorite.

I really enjoy Renees writing, its beautiful and feels like she's really mastered her own unique style. I love Audra as a main character and seeing her navigate each trial on their journey to unlock the mysteries of the past. The best part of the book is her relationship to Jaik. The connection between the them is wonderful and believable and made of slow burn romantic dreams.

This book has such a whimsical vibe thats perfect for a fall or winter day and I cannot wait to see how it ends!

let me tell you a story... that is so gut wrenching, mesmerizing and beautiful. a unique, captivating story within a story that is written so intricately.

the story is told from the eyes of Audra Jashowin, a Storycrafter from Vallanmyre, the capital city of Mithra-Sha. like every Storycrafer in her world, she lost the ability to find endings for the magical stories they were able to tell. this lost ability and power sent their world into disarray, where disease, droughts and poverty plagued the formerly prosperous nation.

continuously ostracized and forgotten by family and friends, Audra travels up and down Mithra-Sha in hopes of a new life – yearning to one day find a home – and she briefly sets roots in Krylan, where she finds employment at a tavern as a server. one day, the tavern keeper convinces her to entertain patrons by telling them a story, despite her inability to complete one, and she agrees in hopes of not losing her job. while telling her story, she briefly locks eyes with a farmhand (who she learns is Jaik Grissom after the fact).

for some inexplicable reason, she felt a pull to Jaik while telling her story, so she kept her eyes on him – no, told the story to him – and with their gazes locked on each other, it lead to her finishing a story. to its entirety. something that hasn't been done in this nation in a very long time. that's when the whirlwind, tangled story – one filled of magic, misunderstandings, monsters, and mayhem – of Audra Jashowin and Jaik Grissom truly begins... again.

i don't want to get too into the details without spoiling too much, so all i can say is that you have to read it to understand the complexity of the characters, the detailed world and magnificent magic. i'm still in awe at how brilliant and unique this story is.

the length of the novel can be intimidating, but i assure you, once it captures your attention, it is extremely hard to put down.

the epilogue left me with so many raw emotions, and questions, so i'll be here sitting and waiting for the sequel.

Oh my goodness what an incredible book. Those last few chapters let me an utter mess and I am sitting here writing this review right after finishing and I am NOT OKAY. I mean, I am, but also THE FEELS.

I loooved this whole concept. It was really unique with the storytelling powers and how that changed the world around Audra. Meanwhile, I also adored Audra!! What a beautifully strong FMC who truly rose above an incredible amount to find the answers she was seeking and the strength to carry that through.

Jaik was such a gem too. I loved the chemistry between them and how they had that pull towards each other. Some perfectly written banter and all of the best protective moments and I must protect these two at all costs.

The reveals were fantastic and each turn in the story drew me in even more. There were some stunning moments that held such raw humanness that brought tears to my eyes. I loved this journey from the start to the finish. There’s action and romance and magic and intrigue and this sense of feeling like one of those true fantasy books you just have to read.

Overall audience notes:
- Fantasy Romance
- Language: very little
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: high
- Trigger/Content Warnings: anxiety depiction, loss of life, near death experiences, blood/gore depiction

What to rate this book, what to rate... Settling on almost 3 stars, because the plot was plotting.

It has been a long time since my impatient ass read a book that consists of paragraph-long sentences. This boy was woooordy. Some parts, I felt, could have been cut by a factor of 25. And this is my main criticism. The world building was acceptable, not overly complicated; the magic system, while indeed unique, was straightforward enough. All the makings of a perfect (albeit, respectfully, YA) fantasy.

Some chapters felt like the author wrote out the outline in a draft and then expanded each sentence by 2-3 paragraphs. That does not allow the reader to flow along the plot. And again that's a pity, because the plot was definitely there.

I liked the FMC. She was willful, had a goal and morals. And she was witty, and had a way with words (kind of came with the territory but made her a refreshing leading lady, compared to the moody scared and damaged FMC's we get saddled with in fantasy novels too often). Then there was Jaik. Why in the Maker's Tales was his name Jaik? And this just raises the question for me - all the names in high fantasy nowadays. I was already utilizing 87% of my braincap to follow the overly wordy prose, and had hardly any left to process all the titles and names. Although as it turned out later, there was a 'dictionary' of sorts at the end, so that one is on me.

The romance was not enough for me personally. I think this story would have benefited immensely from a few generous sprinkles of spice. As it stands, we got a few kisses. 💤

All in all, if you are into heavy on page numbers well edited prose in YA high fantasy, this world will be enjoyable for you, and I would recommend this book.

A story about the magic of storytelling. Audra is a storycrafter who is on the move. For a reason no one knows, storycrafters have lost the ability to finish a story. Until one night meets Jaik and finishes her first story. The story follows them along their way to finding answers to questions they each have.

This is a high fantasy book so be warned. I feel like it won’t be for everyone. This is for people who love world building and lyrical writing. It is a longer book and for people who don’t like those things it will drag.

It’s a beautiful story though. I loved the uniqueness. The magic system revolving around storytelling is so poetic and I really love it. I also loved ‘Luck’ being a whole thing in this book. The writing was good. Long winded but good. You feel everything. You feel like you’re there in the world and you feel all the emotions.
There’s lots of twists and turns that take the book in a different direction. There’s no spice but the love story is still amazing. I loved Audra and Jaik. They make you want to root for them despite their flaws. As the story goes, you learn they have lost memories and how intertwined everything is.
(Also for just a little side note, I really loved the way Jaik helped Audra ground herself. Asking her to list 5 things you see, 4 things you feel, 3 things you hear, 2 things you smell, 1 things you taste. So good!)
And the ending was beautiful. I thought it was perfect.
Overall this is good fit for high fantasy fans who are looking for a unique story.

Thank you Wave Walker Press and NetGalley for providing me an e-arc in exchange for an honest review. My review is my own and not influenced by others.

A story spun in scarlet is about a storyteller Audra who lives in a world where storytellers can’t finish their stories and magic because of that disappeared. Until, one day a farmhand Jaik arrives in the bar where she works, and she is able to finish a story. But, this is where the adventure, danger and terrible truth begins..

This story drew me in from the first page and I loved the banter, humor, mystery and action that takes place in this book. Both main characters are lovely and I can feel a connection with them from the start.

The world building, the story and the writing style are nice and well developed. The ending left me with a smile on my face. This is definitely a story that I want to reread again in the future.

« Let me tell you a story. »

I’m speechless. Wiping the tears off my cheeks, wondering how I’ll ever fill the hole left in my heart by Renée Dugan’s characters.

It had been a long time since I loved a story that much! After the first paragraph, I knew it would be a 5-star read.

First, it’s insanely well written. The number of sentences I highlighted because they were just so PRETTY is extremely high.

Second, it’s BRILLIANT. The twists and turns and how everything connects… brilliant.

Third, the CHARACTERS. I often find myself annoyed by the FMCs. Audra is not one of those annoying FMCs. She’s real, raw, flawed, caring, loving, creative and strong minded. I loved her. And what can I say about Jaik 🥹😍 Newest book boyfriend, here to stay. This man will stay rent free in my head and heart for a long time; fierce, true, loyal, funny af, he is EVERYTHING.

And finally, the MAGIC SYSTEM OMG. I mean, making magic by telling stories??? Are you kidding me? 😍😍

That book is a thick one, but do yourselves a favor and dive into it anyway.

Be warned, though : this book utterly destroyed me and left me bawling my eyes out.

*This book was given to me as an ARC. All opinions are my own.

I was lucky enough to get to read this book as a critique partner, and it will not be leaving me anytime soon.

Literally. It won't be leaving me ever, because I got the opening line tattooed on my arm.

Listen, I'm a picky reader. It takes a pretty special book to even keep me engrossed for the whole thing...so you can imagine the kind of book it takes to get a line inked permanently on my skin.

People say there's no such thing as a perfect book. But people are wrong. A Story Spun in Scarlet is a PERFECT book. It is my FAVORITE book. I have read it over and over since my initial read, and every single time, I find something new that blows me away all over again.

This is a story made for readers and writers alike. It captures the magic of stories in a way no other book ever has. Dugan could not have penned a more beautiful love letter to her craft and those who practice it, and I will be screaming from the rooftops for EVERYONE to read it for presumably the rest of my life.

Also, Jaik Grissom is the best love interest you will ever read. Full stop. I said what I said. I stand by it...

...until Renee Dugan comes out with another Tale of Wonder and Woe, at least, because there BETTER be several more, and I'm pretty sure she'll find a way to enchant me the same way with the next one. Or like, twenty, hopefully. (Renee, how much do I have to bribe you to just write these forever?)

Here's everything you need to know about Jaik Grissom:

1. He loves his cat

2. He's basically a fantasy cowboy

3. His faceclaim is Mummy Era Brendan Fraser/George of the Jungle Brendan Fraser

4. Seriously? You need more than "Mummy Era Brendan Fraser"?

____________________SPOILERS BELOW THIS LINE _______________________

Renee Dugan has never failed to make me fall in love with her stories, but this one is different. Audra is a main character that challenges me and breaks my heart and makes me smile in ways no main character ever has, because I've BEEN her.

I've been the storyteller who lost her endings. I've been the girl desperate to be wanted and valued and SEEN for the good she does, even if it's selfish. I've been the person who had to choose to do the right thing, even when doing the right thing caused so much grief. And I've been the woman who forgot who she was...and needed the Storymaker to give her a reminder.

This story came to me when my own Storycraft felt like it had abandoned me for good. But Audra's tales helped bring me back to the heart of my own stories...and made me fall in love with storytelling itself all over again.

READ THE BOOK.

Let me tell you a story..

Renee Dugan has a way with words! The end!

I shouldn't be surprised at how well-written this book is considering Darkwind is my 2nd favorite series ever but I am still blown away. I always say I start a book for the romance and stay for the plot but I don't know which of those 2 I loved more this time around.

I think I was most impressed by the creativity - the stories within the story. From the very beginning, I was enamored by the idea of storycrafting. I found it so intriguing every time Audra told a story, finished or not. There's so much I want to say about this book - like how Audra was so relatable. How the power of storytelling in the book came to life for me. How I kept thinking I wonder if Renee knows the power of her own storycrafting, just like Audra. How I read multiple scenes out loud to my husband because I was so impressed and needed another person to experience the magic.

Every time Audra said 'let me tell you a story' I screamed!
Every time Jaik said name 5 things I MELTED!

I absolutely loved Jaik. I loved that he held Audra accountable for her feelings/actions. I love how he stayed by her side the ENTIRE time. I was so worried that Audra's fear of abandonment would cause him to leave but Jaik recognized it for what it was and didn't let it stop him. I loved the growth of their relationship.

Obviously, I thoroughly enjoyed this read. I even pushed through what I call a paperback headache because it's not available as an ebook yet but I could not wait. At times I found it to be overly descriptive but I think that's just a part of the author's style and it builds into making the story come to life. I'm excited for the next story of Mithra-Sha.

"I was a woman who'd built her life around the power of words. And now words failed me."

There’s just something so special to me about stories about storytelling. When the storyteller weaves magic within the pages and completely enchants the reader, taking them to another place completely. This mesmerising book does completely that and more, whisking me away to whimsical place full of adventure, magic and romance. But within this world, endings to stories have become lost. Which as a reader and writer, would be all of our greatest frustrations. The way the author spins this tale of woe and wonder is beautiful and mysterious, and has kept me turning the pages on late nights.

Our main character Audra embarks on a quest to fulfil a dream she never thought possible. Along the way, we have intriguing mysteries and funny moments and whimsical adventure, and an absolutely lovely slow-burn romance, full of connection and admiration.

All in all, this story was fantastic and I cannot wait to see it continue. I love Renee Dugan’s style of writing and prose; it reminds me a little of my beloved The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern—another story about stories—the way it’s told and the mix of adventure and romance. Highly recommend for anyone looking for an exciting, refreshing book to cozy up by the fire and read.

"Our past was a tale woven of mystery and desire and a foreboding sense of the tragic, as if we had always known our story could only end one way."

Sorycrafters are the name of the game in this tale. The telling of stories that bring things to life and have shaped the landscape of the country. Then something happens so that the storycrafters can’t finish a story and that causes hard times.

We follow Audra a storycrafter fresh out of training who is unable to complete a story but goes from village to village in hopes of finding an answer to why this is happening. She meets Jaik. A farmhand who doesn’t know of his own power and together they get into all kinds of shenanigans and end up on a quest to figure out why this is happening and to see if they can fix it.

This was an interesting magic system based on storytelling. It does start slow because of the world building but it’s worth it. Happy to see this world continues.

2 stars- ⭐️⭐️.
GENEROUSLY.

Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for providing me with this ARC for my honest review.

This book lacks in a lot of aspects. First of all its quite hard to keep your attention when the story keeps getting interrupted with another story.

I liked the plot of this story but not the way it was executed.
I think it is beautifully written but still lacks the path its supposed to have for a reader to be able to read and ENJOY reading it.

All in all, I did not finish this book, hence the 2 stars. I tried to skim through it but again failed to do so.

I wish the author the best but I might never read from them again.

I started this book months ago when I won an early, annotated copy in a giveaway. It traveled the Midwest with me even if I didn’t have time to read it. Its cover is curled. Its binding is cracked.

I love it.
I preordered the hardcover as soon as I was able because I trusted the author was going to blow me away.

She did.

I swooned. I envisioned. I hated Galan. And I cried.

This was a beautiful story. And one I plan to revisit over and over again.

Thank you for writing this book.

Thank you Wave Walker Press and NetGalley for providing me an e-arc in exchange for an honest review. My review is my own and not influenced by others.

A story spun in scarlet is about a storyteller Audra who lives in a world where storytellers can’t finish they’re stories and magic because of that disappeared.

A Story Spun In Scarlet by R. Dugan

"Let Me Tell You A Story..."

A World of Assassins & Story crafters

Magick powered by the thrill of stories, the romance of adventure and war and mystery in lengthy tales of brave princesses and knights.

Stories come to life through words, through magic and fate and destiny. A novel of incomplete stories finally coming to close, for the first time in a world of starving people, pitiful scraps, little coin, and bloodthirsty soldiers.

Tales of Rebellion, of pirates scrounging for gold and exploring an ocean whilst ruthlessly slaying opposing ships on a vast, open blue sea.

A running girl, a weaver of stories and whispering make-believe into the living world. A farmhand, amplifying a dying magic. Brought together by a single story in a little tavern where flowers of all colors and sizes sprouted and burst forth from the floor and the ceiling and everywhere in between.

Audra & Jaik, a StoryCrafter and Farmhand, Story and Sword, both with bloodied, mysterious pasts, a past they cannot recall.

A Cage, A Prison of Gilded Scarlet & Gold.

Blood, carrion crows swarming dreams - no, nightmares, and wolves circling the forest they tread. War wolves, stone wolves. Monsters spun up from misspoken stories, bone creatures that are ravenous and hungry, wakeful skeletons.

Sacred trees, nightbirds. Rousing those who dream of more being given the gift of story and magic and Hope.

This is a novel about the human heart finding its match in the world and doing whatever she could to keep it, and I encourage every reader out there to see if the Lady StoryCrafter gets her heart's match by the end.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟/5 Stars!

Thank you NetGalley and the author for the eARC in exchange for an honest review!

I really wanted to be blown away by this book from the description alone, thinking I was going to get something in the same vein as A River Enchanted, however this ended up being one of the hardest reads I've had in a very long time.

A Story Spun in Scarlet follows a storyteller, and a fairly good one at that. My favorite parts of this book were when Audra was weaving one of her tales, but unfortunately, they are all unfinished.

What I liked: The fantasy setting is fairly interesting, and I loved the idea of storytellers that are unable to complete their stories. You can tell the author knows her setting very well, and it does feel like a real place, fully fleshed out as though it exists in real life. Audra and Jaik are fine as main characters, and their developing romance is quite cute and sweet. It even has one of my favorite tropes at one point (one bed!!!) I liked that this takes us on an adventure as both the main characters become hunted criminals, and I found myself really rooting for them.

What I didn't like: The writing, although beautiful at times, is too heavy. I had issues matching the pacing of the words, and it's overly descriptive. I kept reminding myself that this is from Audra's perspective, and naturally it would be incredibly detailed, but I felt its redundancy really killed the immersion for me. It slowed me down, and I found I just couldn't focus on it. There are also other things that confused me, like the existence of rifles and airships in this universe when I thought it was more medieval. Also, Audra's stories are sometimes told in tandem with the actual plot, so I was often a bit stretched between the two.

All in all, I liked the idea but didn't care for how it was executed. Renee Dugan is clearly a skilled author, but I feel like she could have whittled it down significantly, considering just how unnecessarily long this book is.

The power of storytelling is the heart of this stunning fantasy. An entire world is woven around the power that words can hold. The book wound its way around with some definitely unexpected twists, and I loved it all.

Audra and Jaik have this wonderful slow burn going, and as their stories unfold, it all makes so much sense! As a reader, you begin to love them before you even know who and what they are. The first chapter had me hooked. It slowed down a little after that, but by 30% of the way through, you could not pay me to put this down. I was burning through it to know what was next. The pacing after that point was perfection with its ups and downs. And the *feelings* the book brought out were so strong. I found myself in turns laughing out loud, gasping in panic, and crying.

Seriously a must read for lovers of fantasy and brilliant storytelling. The stories within the story are all amazing as well. It is clear that Dugan has a gift, and I am adding everything she has ever published to my tbr immediately.

Thanks to Netgalley and Renee Dugan for the advance copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own.

A Story Spun in Scarlet is a wonderful vibrant world where stories are without an end. It is almost like writers block has taken form into a malignant demon with a sole quest of ruining the world of Mithra Sha, which relies heavily on stories to create goodness in its world. Even as a reader you feel compelled for these stories to finish— as you reach closer to the ending of a story only to hav it ripped away from you as well. Somehow R. Dugan captures that yearning for an end into words
Magnificently done R. Dugan unique writing style sucks you in with beautiful prose and a threatening world. The lore was placed in convenient parts of the text and her writing is often lyrical and easy to understand.
I will be going against the grain here and say that this read is quite long and although I appreciated the world I felt like this story could have concluded with 100 pages less. Some parts were tedious with long descriptions and inner monologues, which could be the authors writing personality but I thought I would mention it because it is not everyone’s cup of tea. I would recommend this book to someone who has dipped their toes into epic fantasy and can manage the page count as I believe this would intimidate first time fantasy readers. if the notion of a story within a story intrigues you then this would be the book for you.

The plot had originality, mystery and intrigue.
However, the novel's lengthy prose proved to be too much for me. It was all descriptive paragraphs with little dialogue.
That being said, preferences in writing style are inherently subjective, and while the heavy emphasis on description may not resonate with all readers like myself, it may be for you.
The author's vivid imagery and meticulous attention to detail in the narrative provided a clear image of the world in my head. This was one of the bonus of this novel.

Audra Jashowin is a storyteller with a past full of secrets. The country she lives in is in a state of disarray: the magic of Storycrafting has disappeared mysteriously, leaving all Storycrafters without endings for their Stories. The country’s soldiers are on the hunt for rogue Storycrafters who use illegal amplifiers to finish their Stories, and its people have been sent into poverty and starvation.

I don’t know where to start with this book other than saying it was incredible. Audra’s adventures kept me glued to the page and the mystery surrounding her past had me scrambling my brain to figure out what exactly happened before it was revealed.

The book was written so well and some descriptions were just so elegantly phrased that I found myself highlighting so much on my Kindle. Audra’s Story excerpts were a great addition, and the characters were flawed and complex, which gave their actions more meaning. I enjoyed the slow burn romance aspect, and was rooting for Audra and Jaik all the way! What I also appreciated was that the ending was not everything you’d expect!

I only have 2 half critiques about the book, adding up to a total of 1 full critique (I know that’s very specific, don’t come at me). The first half being that I thought it could use a bit more spice between Audra and Jaik. The spice score I’d give this book is a 0/5 (because there was actually zero included). And for a romantasy novel, I usually expect there to be at least a little bit (although if this is considered YA?, I guess you should fully ignore this part of my review HAHA…I did say half critique…).

My other half critique is that I didn’t love the religious undertones throughout the novel. The author is very religious so I can’t really fault her for including something so important to her within her stories. This is also definitely a me problem, and not a story problem, so other readers may not find any fault at all with this, which is why I consider it only a half critique.

Regardless of the above, I still would give this book a 5/5. It was engaging, adventurous, beautifully written, and just unique in general compared to the other popular romantasy novels out there right now. It was definitely a story worth telling, as well as a story worth reading! I hope that once this book is released to the public, it gets the recognition it deserves!

Thank you to NetGalley and Wave Walker Press for the eARC. All opinions are uniquely my own.

"A Story Spun in Scarlet," the inaugural installment in the "Tales of Wonder and Woe" series by R. Dugan, weaves a mesmerizing narrative that blends the enchantment of storytelling with the allure of unexpected adventures. Dugan's tale unfolds in the captivating land of Mithra-Sha, where stories have lost their conclusions, leaving behind a tapestry of incomplete narratives.

At the heart of this captivating tale is Audra Jashowin, a gifted storyteller adrift in a purposeless existence. Fleeing from familial rejection and a home where tales have lost their closure, Audra arrives in a city promising fresh starts and second chances. Here, she encounters Jaik Grissom, a seemingly ordinary farmhand whose extraordinary ability to amplify tales might hold the key to restoring the power of storytelling in Mithra-Sha.

The chemistry between Audra and Jaik sparks a journey fraught with danger, taking them through the wilderness and over turbulent seas. As they unravel the mystery beneath the broken tales, a profound bond forms between them. Dugan skillfully navigates the complexities of their pasts, revealing layers of bravery, brilliance, loyalty, and love that lie at the core of their individual stories.

The narrative unfolds with a perfect balance of adventure, mystery, and romance, keeping readers engaged as Audra and Jaik confront a truth that could reshape history and alter the destiny of their tale. Dugan's prose is rich and evocative, painting vivid landscapes and breathing life into characters that resonate with authenticity.

"A Story Spun in Scarlet" not only explores the power of storytelling within the narrative but also invites readers to reflect on the bravery, loyalty, and love that define their own stories. As Audra and Jaik navigate their quests, readers are drawn into a world where the boundaries between reality and fiction blur, leaving them eagerly anticipating the next chapter in this enchanting series.

In conclusion, R. Dugan's "A Story Spun in Scarlet" is a masterfully crafted tale that combines elements of fantasy, adventure, and romance. It is a tapestry of wonder and woe that captivates the imagination and leaves an indelible mark on the reader's heart. Fans of fantasy literature will undoubtedly find themselves enchanted by the magic woven into every page of this captivating debut.

"All my life, I'd never felt anything like that. I don't have a single story to tell, but whatever's in me, whatever I'm made of...it knows you, too. And I'm some kind of luckless coward, because all I wanted to do was run from it. I had to get away as fast as I could, because, right then, I knew my life wasn't going to be the same. Even if I'd dodged you, you would've stayed with me. I would've gone back to the Tankard and looked for you every night, even if you never knew I was there."

A Story Spun in Scarlett follows Audra on a journey to find purpose in her world where the magic within Storycrafting has been lost but she finds so much more than she ever bargained for. Audra's story is achingly beautiful and equally harrowing. I finished this book and immediately want to start it over from the beginning, wrapping it around myself like my coziest blankets.

Things I loved:
- CHARACTERS!! I fell in love with both of our main characters so quickly and they alone propelled this story for me
- plot on plot on plot! There were so many things I didn't see coming until they were right in front of me. I feel like I am rarely surprised when reading Fantasy (probably because I read too much of it) and this one had a few surprises for me
- Renee Dugan's writing. This story was laid out in one of the most beautiful ways I have seen in a long time. I will absolutely be pursuing Renee's backlog immediately.
- MAGIC SYSTEM - magic being derived from stories speaks to my reader heart in a way I did not anticipate nor can I accurately describe using words

What I didn't love:
- There were some lulls in the pacing for me at the beginning and again at the midpoint of this book. Sometimes I felt like there may have been a more direct way to get from point A to point B, but in the end it was 100000% worth it.

This book has a great potential but I really felt like it didn't show through in the storyline at all.

The stories are creative and really nice, but maybe have too much twists for the short stories they are.
The regular plot is okay, but is written with a lot of difficult terms and some typos, making it hard to get through the story. In addition it starts of with lots of information and descriptions. When almost feel like you start to get the hang of it, a story comes through and you just have to start all over again.

Everything in the story is dragged out so much, there are many details and descriptions. Maybe this is weird to say, but I feel like this story could have been amazing if it only had like 200-300 pages, with more focus on the good parts in stead of descriptions of all the details, in stead of 551 pages, dragged out making it a tough and slow paced read.

In addition there is one major inconsistency, which basically is a big part of the whole storyline. Storycrafters can make a lot of things, but not living ones. However they dangers the main characters face are being wanted and dangerous living creatures from unfinished stories.

I felt like the writing could have been less difficult and the plot could have been better. I even thought about DNF, but kept my hopes up and continued reading. Even though I was hoping the story would get better throughout, it just didn't which did affect my rating. Therefore I unfortunately am able to give this book just 2,5 stars.
