This book was so much better than I imagined it would be at the beginning. Yes it is scary, gory, suspenseful, with excellent world building, and well written characters. More importantly, it was touching. I wasn't expecting to be moved to tears but I was. My only disappointment was it ended. I really wanted more.

Rhiannon Frater is a a lady who writes the most kick-ass heroines: they are fearless, smart, loyal and strong. True girl power stories. But also, this author is known by her action packed stories about apocalypse and zombies: As the World Dies trilogy is a must read for anyone who claims to be fan of The Walking Dead.

Her latest novel, The Mesmerized, follows that same premise - Minji is a wife and a mother of two little girls who find herself in completely crazy situation during family vacation in Las Vegas. What should have been fun times, turns into fight for her husband's and daughters safety. For some unexplainable reason, Minji is the only one not affected by the same thing that turns everyone around her into zombie like state.
The Mesmerized does start a little bit confusing and you will need to read few chapters before you get captivated by the story, but it only adds up to the general atmosphere of the confusion - Rhiannon Frater makes you walk in the shoes of her main character. You feel what she feels and discover things gradually. Minji is not scientist or special opp, you will not get fancy SF explanations or Mission Impossible fight scenes. Minji's driving force is her mother instinct and love for her family, her only focus is to get them to safety and get her little girl back. That is what makes this book feel real and easy to relate to.

Who should read The Mesmerized? I believe that it would be a perfect choice for fans of Stephen King and similar authors, as well for anyone who would like to read something different from their usual picks.

Suspense, science fiction and a handful of characters made for an intense end of days read.

Minji Nordin, her husband, Jake and their two children, Ava, five, and Bailey, an infant are vacationing in Las Vegas when an inexplicable wave of pain hits everyone. It causing blindness, immobility, and bleeding from the eyes and for a handful death. Panic ensues but Minji’s family seems fine. Then another wave hits and suddenly Jake and Ava are affected. They along with the majority of people at the Venetian Casino beginning marching without pause. Hell’s bells… I am all in.

Minji manages to get outside with her children and husband out and meets others who seem to be immune too but waves continue to test that theory and something appears to be happening with Ava. Reports come in from all around the world. Everyone appears to be mesmerized and they are all heading towards a point in Nevada.

Frater is an excellent storyteller and this apocalyptic tale offered twists while feeding my inner geek. The military, and the mystery of the strange waves kept me flipping the pages, as did the action and responses from the affected humans. An ex-military stranger, who frightens Ava soon provides answers. Minji will need to stop the threat and save humanity.

A thrilling, suspenseful apocalyptic tale, The Mesmerized delivered with a kick-ass heroine and satisfying conclusion. If you’ve never tried Frater, this is an excellent place to start. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

Four and a half stars: A riveting and terrifying apocalyptic tale with a twist.

Minji corals her precocious five year old daughter, Ava, while she waits for her husband to return with their infant daughter, Bailey. The family is finishing up their vacation in Las Vegas and looking forward to doing some sight seeing today. As they head out of The Venetian Casino, something terrifying happens. An inexplicable wave of pain hits everyone, causing blindness, immobility and for some bleeding and death. Once the initial wave passes, Minji assesses the situation. Her little family is okay, but they are surrounded by scenes of horror. Jake suggest they head back to their hotel room and hole up, but before they can get there, another wave hits. This time Jake, Ava, and everyone else are left dazed and unmoving...mesmerized. Minji seems to be immune, and it is up to her to save her family. Little does Minji know, she will soon be tasked with saving the world. What or who is behind the sinister attacks? Can Minji save the world?

What I Liked:
*Okay, I admit I was a bit hesitant to go into this one because it is December and I am in the mood for light, fluffy, and feel good. I wasn't sure I could handle blood, guts, and horror. No worries, once I picked this one up, after the first chapter, I was glued. This was a riveting and thrilling tale with terrific suspense and mystery. It was a fascinating and terrifying read that kept me guessing until the end. I loved it. I highly recommend this one.
*I enjoyed the mystery surrounding the strange attacks. Wave after wave of the excruciating, nauseating pain keeps hitting humanity, extending its reach with each new attack. People immediately become mindless, zombie like creatures, pulled to walk in the same direction. Where are they headed and why? They are injured, dying even, but they rise up and walk in unison to some unknown destination. Creepy right? A few people are immune to the attacks, like Minji. Those left are desperately trying to save their loved ones. I was itching to uncover what was beyond the attacks, and when I finally found out, I was shocked. Loved all the suspense and the big reveal was a jaw dropper.
*Minji was easy to identify with. She is a fighter, a girl who has endured hardship during her life. She knows how to get up, brush the dust off and keep going. Not only did I love her fierceness and determination, but I also appreciated that she is of mixed heritage. Minji is half Korean, and covered in tattoos and she has purple dreads. However, underneath her tough girl exterior is a kind, tender heart that will do anything to protect her family. My heart ached for her as she fought to save her daughters and husband. As a mother, I could totally identify with what she endured. What I loved the most though was the way she handled the situation at the end, her compassion and bravery made a huge difference.
*Along with Minji is an interesting and eclectic mix of secondary characters. You get Arthur, who is the suspicious, antagonistic and recalcitrant naysayer. He is a huge pain in the ass, and he gets worse as the book goes on. He is the one who is always stirring up trouble. Yet, Minji sees beyond his horrible behavior and she realizes why he's behaving badly. Jessie the nurse practitioner is an all around good guy, and I love how he was so altruistic while facing such horrific circumstances. Simone is also likable with her big heart, and willingness to help. Then add in Alec. He is a bit of a mystery at first, but he plays a crucial role, and I liked peeling back his layers and understanding him. All in all an interesting and entertaining cast.
*Since this is a horror/apocalyptic type read I was expecting zombies and blood and gore, but I was surprised that this was different. This one had shades of Stephen King, and what I got was an original and creepy little book. This isn't a zombie book and there isn't a lot of blood and guts, there are scenes of death and destruction but nothing that was too graphic. I thought it was the perfect blend of horror and suspense. This is a book once you start you won't be able to put down as you will want to know the truth.
*The ending delivers with a climatic and terrifying scene that reveals all. Shudders..... then the epilogue ties up the loose ends, but it leaves one big, nagging, jaw dropping line that leaves you on edge. This appears to be a stand alone, and I loved that I got the full story and wasn't left wondering and worrying. For those of you looking for a solid stand alone, get this one.
And The Not So Much:
*This is probably just me, but I felt like it took a tiny bit too long for the story to take off. Frater takes her time introducing Minji and her family. I appreciated the details, but I was on edge waiting for the apocalyptic event to strike. It finally hits around the twenty page mark. Once it does, I never looked back. I think it was a case of me just wanting the big, bad event to arrive, and I was impatient.
*As the devastation unfolds, there are these snippets in between of other people experiencing the event throughout the country. When the view point shifts to these random characters, it was a bit jarring, and at first, I thought I was meeting new players, but nope, they are just quick random glimpses to show the devastation. I didn't care for these interjections, even though I realize they were inserted to help illustrate a point. At least, there is a follow up on them at the end.
*I was a bit disappointed that it wasn't clearer as to how the attacks radiated out. I pictured them as giant circular waves extending outward like a bomb blast. Yet, I still didn't understand the timing, how frequent were the hits? How far did they extend each time? Furthermore, once the source was revealed, I was still a bit confused as to how some people were immune and why. Were they immune to both or just one? Not clear on that part. Why were some immune and then suddenly not? I am not sure on that.

The Mesmerized was a creepy, apocalyptic tale with a strange twist. I loved uncovering the source of the attacks and following Minji, a brave mother, who fought to save her family and the world. Once I picked this one up, I didn't want to put it down as I was sucked into the terrifying, suspenseful story. For those of you who enjoy a good apocalyptic tale and want something different, grab this one immediately. I loved it.

I was privileged enough to be given a copy of Rhiannon Frater’s The Mesmerized, to read from Permuted Press.

I have never read a book that touched me so deeply as a mom as this book. It hit right at home. I know you are saying “What? This book isn’t some touchy feely book. It’s supposed to be a horror novel and it’s Rhiannon. There are always gory zombies or blood sucking vampires but not that kind of book.” Well Rhiannon hit it on the head. There’s not many or if any, horror books that a mom can TOTALLY identify with but this one I can. That protective momma bear comes out in us when anybody messes with our babies, no matter our race, nationality, or in this case alien entity that we may be. Also, most moms can immediately feel compassion and want to help any mom that is going through anything with their child.

I LOVED this book! It was really easy to give this one 5 stars without even thinking about it. And Thank You Rhiannon, for giving us a refreshing new book that as a mom I could identify with it in more than one way. Plus it was creepy and horrific at the same time. Does that sound warped? LOL! Well it was AWESOME!

O-M-G this book rocked!! Mystery, intrigue, death, action and aliens all wrapped up tightly with a bow made of the love between mother & child. Another kick ass heroin who's inner strength saves the day. I'm so completely drawn to this authors work based solely on her ability to create characters that you can easily connect with. Solid 5 stars!

This book hit me right between the eyes and kept smacking me around till I became it’s bitch. Because of my experience reading a few of her other books, I knew it was going to be well written, dark, and full of incredibly painted characters, but I did not expect to be sitting here at the end of it all with my mouth hanging open and my mind officially blown away. Rhiannon Frater presents The Mesmerized, a genre bundt cake of dark post-apocalyptic horror with a rich frosting of science fiction.

As with her other books, this one features a strong female protagonist. Minji is a wife and mother who will do anything it takes to protect her family. Where each person seems to lose their civility bit by bit, Minji maintains her cool while still being realistic about her fear. She is smart, both street and book.

You’ve never read a story like this before. It may remind you of mysterious pandemic style books such as Under the Dome, or even Robert R. McCammon’s Swan Song, but after you read Rhiannon Fraser’s books, you will recognize her talent as an author solidly standing on her own. Her style is unique and her ability to weave us all into her world is top notch. Her zombie reads had me stumbling and struggling to stay on top of the panic and tension. This book, well… it had me..ummm… sigh… yes I believe I’ll go there…
Mesmerized.

Groan if you want, but I am not going to apologize for it. I have been extremely busy as of late. Been kind of dealing with my own craptastic thing, and needed escape. The Mesmerized ended up being the perfect choice. With the nights long here in Alaska, the mood was already set. Dark and alone was how I read most of the book and I suggest for you to find a corner in your house to do the same.

Our protagonist is Minji, she is a character of diversity being half Korean. I mention this because it’s a very important aspect of the story. During all of this, as with many books which explore the psychological deconstruction of society such as this one does, race becomes important, as well as class, and judging those by their appearance alone. Even after you see her in action and being the recipient of her compassion, there are those (cough… I wanted to bitch slap Author, cough) who continue to judge her. Even when she is the key to saving not only themselves, but possibly the world. Her dreads & ink soon become the easier thing to accept after the otherness she has takes over.

As mentioned earlier, this is not my first read of Rhiannon’s, but I have not reviewed her other series on the blog yet. I read her zombie series and fell in love with her style of writing. Along with writing clean and all encompassing prose, she also includes strong female characters, real ones. She knows how to write real fear, compassion, realistic progression as well as believable situations into the story, despite being about something … otherwise. ;)

I could not escape the intensity that grew with each turn of the page. The characters are rich, the horror is intangible for the characters as well as myself. Don’t laugh, again, but there was one point I checked to see if I left the stove on or something near the burner because I could smell a hint of smoke. Yet, there is a message here, just as there is in her other reads, it is subtle. You kind of sit there thinking… until your mouth forms a silent “ohhhh” and you smile at her sneakiness.

Those of you who have been waiting to read this, letting it archive onto your Kindle, set aside some time for a date with it because you will want to have a nice chunk of time for the immersion. Horror fans, post-apocalyptic fans, readers who like smart writing and original story telling, you will love this book. Take the time to grab it and fall into line… you will become one of us and you won’t be sorry.

The Mesmerized is the most recent published novel from Rhiannon Frater and it does not disappoint. While reading I was reminded of books like The Stand and Under the Dome by Stephen King and movies like The Happening from M. Night Shyamalan.

Minji, our main character, is a wife and mother who will do what it takes to protect her family. She is tough, smart and doesn't back down. She and her family are visiting Las Vegas when people are suddenly stricken - bleeding and becoming unresponsive. Minji is one of the few that is able to continue functioning and it's up to her to find out what is happening and save those that have been Mesmerized.

If you like fantasy or horror with a strong female lead, this is for you. The character development was exceptional and Minji is just what I look for in an MC. No cookie cutter Mary Sues here. The pacing works well within the story and it pulls you through all the way to the end. I didn't want to put it down.

5/5 stars and highly recommended.

Thank you to the author for providing an e-book as part of the blog tour in exchange for an honest review.

I have enough distance from the book to read it. It takes about a year for me to forget a large chunk of the story, so I get to be entertained. Since I write the books I want to read, it's always fun to go back with fresh eyes. I gotta say...I'm proud of this one. I was pretty ill when I wrote it, but I think I did a solid job.

I usually like this author's books but man this was out-there. I kept trying to figure out what the hell was happening. And the ending, for Minji to do a 180 on what she thinks should have happened - I don't get it. This is not a series I would be interested in.

"It is silence,
not screams of terror,
which proclaims the end of the world…"

I mean how can you not want to read this book after reading that sentence?? Seriously!!! Even if I had not already known that Rhiannon Frater is a phenomenal writer....that one sentence would have made me pick this book up!!!!

Rhiannon Frater is the author who first introduced me to zombies. I had been in an serious book slump and someone had posted online that I should read As The World Dies by Rhiannon Frater....so I decided to give it a try. I read As The World Dies in one sitting and read the rest of the series within a weekend. I am now a huge fan of Rhiannon's and love her writing style.

Rhiannon captures the essence of humanity and makes the reader completely connect with the characters in her novels. Each character is so real and vulnerable and I always feel like I can relate to at least one of her characters in her books.

In The Mesmerized, Minji Nordim and her family are vacationing in Las Vegas and are getting ready to head back home when disaster strikes. Minji feels a strange sensation and then watches in horror as everyone around her either goes completely still or is screaming in pain. Some of the people begin to bleed all over the body and some are just standing still. Minji discovers that she and her two daughters are not affected by whatever is attacking the rest of the world but her husband is.

"Screams echoed through the vast resort in a horrifying chorus. All around her, people flailed about, or gripped their heads in their hands. Jake grunted and stumbled as Bailey let out a shrill cry. Woozy, Minji reached for her screaming baby just as another stab of unbearable agony tore through her brain, blinding her. Rapidly blinking her eyes, she desperately attempted to restore her sight."

The Mesmerized is a post-apocalyptic book that has it all..unspeakable horror, intense action scenes, and a twist that no one will see coming. This is the beginning of an incredible journey for Minji that will keep the reader flipping pages deep into the night. As is in the name of the book....I was completely "Mesmerized" by this novel!!! I literally could not put it down. This was so refreshing and different than anything I have read before. I would definitely recommend this book if you enjoy sci-fi, action, and suspense. I can't wait to see what Rhiannon Frater writes next!!!

Rhiannon Frater is fast becoming one of my favorite authors because her horror novels are on point. Most of the books I’ve read from her are more gothic in nature, and only a few were purely creepy sci-fi so when the opportunity to read this came I jumped on it. I had a taste of what was to come and I couldn’t wait to devour the whole book (which I did in about two days).

The Mesmerized puts a really interesting spin on a ‘zombie’ idea. Inside of dead walking about trying to eat whatever moves, we are treated to the eerily silent Mesmerized who walk with a purpose toward a mysterious goal that they will do anything to reach. I really love the utterly mindless nature of the mesmerized, and I actually loved the final reveal of why the people are acting the way they are. The pacing is a slow increase while the survivors work to figure out what is going on, and the amount of tension is fantastic! The Mesmerized offer some resistance and add that creep factor but true to a post-apocalyptic situation the people who are the biggest problems are the ones who are still ‘normal’. I loved that Rhiannon doesn’t make you work for the next piece of the puzzle, she gives you enough info

Minji is a true heroine in this story. She’s strong and self reliant without being overly distant, and very protective of her family. I love that her bond with her children is one of the main focuses of this story, and how when things get tough she thinks of them. The side characters are also fantastic, but Minji truly shines in this.

Rhiannon is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to horror. She’s capable of making you cringe and wince, but she’s also capable of giving you that slowly creeping feeling that is worse in some ways. The Mesmerized is one of those books that leave you stunned at the end, and it left me wanting more of Frater’s work.

I really enjoyed listening to this book. Of course it doesn't hurt that it's narrated by Cassandra Campbell who is one of the best narrators in the industry. She breathes life into each and every story she narrates.

This book is about the end of the world. A supernatural event occurs and except for a few the majority of people go into a mesmerized state. One that doesn't is one of the main characters Minji. She's strong and fearless. Not scared to fight to the end to protect her family. This was a great listen for me!

Minji is on holiday in Las Vegas with her husband Jake and her daughters Bailey and Ava. Suddenly, hundreds drop dead. Those who survive are under the spell of some unknown power. They are all drawn to a sopt in the desert. Minji and Bailey are immune and she carries Ava and Jake with her. She eventually finds other survivors but they have to race the clock to find out what is causing this and how to stop it before it's too late.

A fresh concept that had me guessing the entire time, this book totally threw me through a loop that I wasn’t expecting.

The hero one was kick-ass, while still being, like, the BEST mom in the world. I couldn’t have picked a better time to read this too, since I just had my first child. I was able to connect with the MC on so many more levels.

I really recommend reading this!

I always look forward to read something new by Rhiannon Frater cause she's an excellent writer who has a knack of pulling you into the story from the start and make you care about the charachter.

The Mesmerized is no different! Brilliant story, amazing charachters, lot's of suspence... I just loved Minji, the main charachter! She is a kickass, confident charachter who will do anything to keep her family safe until she can help them get out of this weird mesmerized state.

I’ve been a fan of Rhiannon Frater ever since I read her As the World Dies zombie apocalypse trilogy a few years back. THE MESMERIZED may not be my favorite novel of hers but the writing is on par with her other books. In this novel, the apocalypse has arrived in a weird plague like storm but instead of zombies, most of the population become entranced, or mesmerized, and start walking in one direction, as if they had only one purpose but no control over their body. They become mindless shells which leads to destruction of cities and the crumbling of societies. The main character, Minji, is one of the very few that is still conscious and able to control her own body. She sets out to save her family, her daughter and her husband among the many mesmerized.

Personally, I find this idea of the apocalypse very frightening. At least with zombies you know what you’re dealing with but in the case of the mesmerized, it’s very difficult to see who you’re fighting against. An act of terrorism or a supernatural plague are theorized but nobody really knows what is going on. The mesmerized hordes don’t seem dangerous. Many are dying but deaths are all self-inflicted because the mindless drones don’t know what they are doing or walking into. The unknown is very frightening but for Minji, finding the cure is the one and only thing that’s on her mind. One of my greatest fears is to lose my mind or lose my memory so an event like this would probably be up there on my list of worse apocalypses ever.

As mentioned earlier, the writing is amazing. The descriptive narrative is very well done. Rhiannon Frater is a genius when it comes to describing horrible scenes, and I mean that as a compliment. One can only think of her opening scene in First Days, the first book of her zombie trilogy, where she describes a child’s little fingers trying to scratch their way out from under the front door of a house. In THE MESMERIZED, obviously the situation is a little different, but the intensity and the emotion felt in the first minutes of the plague is due to the wonderful writing. I could feel Minji’s horror and her intense desire to assemble her family and keep them safe. It’s strange that for a good part of the beginning of the plague, Minji was literally on her own, despite being surrounded by the mesmerized. This part should have been difficult to read because of the lack of dialogue but fortunately, Rhiannon’s strong narrative allows you to overlook this lack and become absorbed in the story. Eventually, Minji finds other people that are immune, like her, but for the time she was alone, we obviously had to rely on Rhiannon’s great narrative.

A strong female lead is typical for this author and I wouldn’t expect anything less. I love how Minji is a no nonsense character and deals wonderfully with the apocalypse. Her fear is very real, and you can see how she fights to stay strong for her family, but you can also tell she’s often moments away from a breakdown. The other characters are not as well developed but their own unique story has you sympathize for them and their situation.

The setting for the majority of the novel was perfect. “This was Las Vegas, a place that never slept, but it now appeared empty and abandoned by the living.” Vegas is the city that never sleeps, the city of sin and you would think if one city needed to be purged of sin, it would be Las Vegas. Unfortunately, Vegas isn’t the only city affected. The mesmerized seem to be appearing in different cities, at different times, in different waves.

Overall, the characters were wonderful, the writing exceptional and the story original. Fans of Rhiannon Frater will be pleased to read something completely new and new readers will be stunned by the impressive, yet terrifying novel.

The Mesmerized is a horror novel by Rhiannon Frater, author of such fun works as Pretty When She Dies and The Tale of the Vampire Bride. Much as with other works in her bibliography, it stars a female heroine who is highly competent and slightly outlier from the rest of society. In this case, Minji is a good deal more integrated into society than the typical Frater-heroine in that she's "only" a Korean American tattoo artist mother of two.

The premise is basically a take on the zombie apocalypse of so many other stories, only removing one of the central elements: the zombies being dangerous to survivors. The titular monsters aren't attacking anyone but the sudden loss of the majority of Nevada to a a shambling trance-like state is bad enough. The book shows the survivors dealing with the horror of their family, friends, and loved one's condition instead of an immediate threat to their survival.

Minji and her small group of survivors, unlike the majority of zombie apocalypse survivors, have the chance to investigate their problem's origin and deal with it. In a way, the book is what a big-budget version of The Twilight Zone version of the zombie apocalypse would be like. It's very much about the morality, human emotions, and relationships than the general nihilism of, say, The Walking Dead. Minji is a strong heroine who handles the racism, stupidity, and callousness of her fellow survivors with reasonable aplomb.

The Mesmerized didn't feel like a long book and I went through it's three-hundred-and-thirty-three pages very quickly. The characterizations are not especially deep outside of Minji but they are serviceable and show a believable range of human emotion. The primal motivations are the best, in my opinion, and very little works better than a mother working to save her child's life. I bought Minji's feelings from the beginning to the end and authentic characterization is the strongest part of this book.

The book makes good use of its Las Vegas setting, highlighting its role as an adult playground which has an abnormal number of children present. It mirrors my own experiences with the city and I think the author managed to capture the "essence" of the city. The geography isn't horrible, either, including references to many notable city-locations in roughly the right place. Compared to most genre books, that's a significant accomplishment.

Horror fans may note the book is light on the darkness. The titular creatures aren't, necessarily, dead just brainwashed. There's a decided lack of violence, too, consisting of only a single person as a major threat to Minji. While the entire world is at stake, really, this could have been an episode of Doctor Who for how everything is wrapped up. Even the resolution to the threat is more about peace and understanding than violence. This isn't a bad thing, quite refreshing really, but traditionalist fans of zombie fiction should be warned.

In conclusion, I liked this book. It's good "Light Horror" reading without the grimdark of so many other books. If you wanted to give someone a copy of a zombie book for people who are not zombie fans, I'd recommend this along with Time of Death and Ex-Heroes.

Which is high praise.

I LOVED the zombie apocalypse trilogy from this author and this book did not disappoint me with the storyline either.

Minji, her 5 yr. old daughter Ava, 10 mo. old daughter Bailey and husband Jake are all on vacation in Las Vegas. With both of their parents just departed, they're deciding what to do with their day. That's when all hell breaks loose. It started with an excruciating headache, so bad it caused blindness and rendered them nauseous. After the first episode, pandemonium had broken out and Minji and her family didn't know what to do or where to go. Some people were bleeding from their noses and mouths. Then when another incident happened and Minji came to, her husband and Ava were in a paralyzed state, their eyes vacant and with everyone else, they were walking towards something, but to Minji she had no idea. They were in a mall in Vegas on the 2nd floor and everyone was walking towards a ledge and falling over into a fountain to their deaths, which is where Jake was headed.

Once Minji got Ava tied up and safe, she went after her husband who went over the ledge and into the fountain. Thank God he survived but was still incoherent. Finding an ambulance outside and some govt. help, she was set to get Jake, but the incident happened again, killing the govt. people. She takes a stretcher and with the help of Arthur, a random guy who was unaffected like Minji, they get Jake on the stretcher and take a ride in the ambulance to where they find a medical center.

There they meet Simone, another lady who came out of the trance once the incident occurred. And Jesse, a guy who works at the medical center who helps her with her husband. Ava is completely transfixed and only stares at Minji and Bailey. No one knows what's going on but Vegas is burning and from the news casts they're watching on the tv at the medical center, it's happening everywhere. Those "mesmerized" in Vegas are either dead or walking towards something, but they do not know what.

This is a real page turner, with Minji trying to figure out what the hell is going on, why her daughter is mesmerized yet always following Minji with her eyes as though she understands somewhat what is going on, but is unable to respond to Minji or the others. Is there a way to stop this madness and save the world, or will it get worse until everyone is dead and the world is gone?

LOVED this story, Rhiannon Frater never disappoints!

What if you were the only person left? What if among thousands of living-but-not-conscious people, you were the only sane one? Yet? The author takes this question and sculpts into a novel full of willpower, fear, action and a young mother's feelings.

By the end of the first chapter, I was intrigued. The writing was very detailed, each scene elaborately described. Although, sometimes the details were more overwhelming than the state of the situation. This provoked temptation to skip over some sentences.

One thing I liked was how everything clicked into place at the right moment. Not too early, not too late. The resolutions were a little confusing but realistic, and very interesting. The ending was nicely placed, too.

I probably won't read this book again, as the suspense has already passed, but I definitely recommend it to everyone, especially people who like science fiction. This book is a perfect blend of that and a little fear. Not a horror story, but one that will leave you wondering.

I have enjoyed this book. Now, it's up to you to find out for yourself- Can one strong-willed woman save her children, her husband and the world?

Rating- ★★★★½

While I felt it was easy to figure our where the book was heading The Mesmerised initially had me thinking this would be a zombie book similar to what I had previously read by Rhiannon. I found myself quite taken with the second half of the book, not wanting to put it down. In fact I quite loved it and I think this is because of the ending which I thought was simply perfect. The beginning had a quite disturbing build up with more and more people becoming mindless drones all heading off together in the same direction after each attack. How does a woman with a husband now one of the affected and two small children to care for keep them all safe from harm when everyone around her is either heading transfixed into the desert or dead and the few who are still with it are not exactly the best allies one can have?

I liked Minji a great character capable and headstrong, the desert had something far more curious in store for her than I had originally thought it would and this pleased me a great deal. Entertaining and with characters one can get behind I felt The Mesmerised was another example of why it is I enjoy Rhiannons work.

“No one hurts my kids,” she hissed as Arthur gaped up at her. “No one!”

Loved, loved this book. First of all, there's the protagonist - tattoo artist Minji Nordim. Inked up, sporting purple dreads, Minji is one tough MOTHER. Throughout the story, she uses her skills and inner toughness to protect her incapacitated husband and her two little girls.

But, not only is this a story of a mother lion protecting her cubs, it is one kick ass monster story. Starting in Las Vegas (and where else should a killer monster story start), people start dropping like flies. Most rise up and are "mesmerized," while some, like Minji, are immune to whatever force is causing this wave of zombie-like behavior. The force starts spreading from Las Vegas to the rest of the world.

I've read LOTS of zombie books (which this isn't BTW) and lots of monster books and this is one of the best. I loved the characters, the setting, the pacing, the storyline, the ending of the book - I can't think of anything that I didn't like.

So, if you like post-apocalyptic tales or monster stories or just plain well-written fiction, give THE MESMERIZED a try.

Like Dead Spots, Frater is sojourning into more of a normal horror story in the vein of King / Koontz here.

The basic progression of the story is not uncommon - a person re-discovering their inner strength. In many ways it's reminiscent of her As the World Dies trilogy.

As usual, the prose is ok but not exceptional - but the story is well crafted.

Compared to Dead Spots (which was the latest book I read from Frater), this story is shorter and tighter, which both has its advantages and disadvantages.

I you want a fairly intense read with a strong - but relatively short - story, I definitely recommend this book.

Why is she immune and what is going on with her daughter? The Mesmerized at first glance is a story of trying to travel instantaneously from point to point and opening a dimension with nasty consequences. The story is fascinating and makes for a fast read. I like the story. What makes it different is the location and mystery of why it is happening and why they are marching, all of which is exciting. When you get into the why of the story it does remind you of filmed works from Philadelphia Experiment to the Event Horizon. The unique spin Ms. Frater puts on the story is what makes it thrilling and worth a read.
