Hi, folks! While I write across genres, there's one universal connecting all my books: secrets. I grew up in a house choking with them, and I remain fascinated by the thoughts and actions we hide from the world.

My beginnings as an author were pretty grim, something I speak about in my TEDx Talk (https://youtu.be/a5vSLh3oPXI). I've come a long way since that first book, and I'm proud to call myself an Amazon Charts bestselling, Edgar-nominated, ITW Thriller and Anthony Award-winning author of nonfiction, children's books, YA adventure, magical realism, and crime fiction. I also love to teach creative writing in international workshops.

I live in Minneapolis with a rotating batch of foster kittens (and occasional foster puppies, but man those goobers are a lot of work). You can find out more at jessicalourey.com.

The isolation required by this Covid-19 pandemic is taking its toll on me. I'm finding it so much easier to read in my favourite genre fiction bubbles rather than tackling more substantial literature. Here I am in December 2020, reading cozy mysteries and liking them! And how, you ask, can a cozy mystery involve a serial killer? I wondered that too, but Mira James with her sidekick, Mrs. Berns, made me a believer.

One of the true joys of the book is Mrs. Berns (whose first name I do not know), the feisty senior whose conversation is refreshingly uncensored and who is game for anything. She and Mira take a self defence course in this book and after the instructor throws her the first time, she declares that she isn't leaving that basement until she has mastered that skill. Her enthusiasm for life is contagious and her observations are hilarious. Mira herself is pretty cynical and she has acerbic commentary of her own that is entertaining.

Mira takes a course for private investigators during the first part of the novel. She proves that she can be good at it, having the observational skills and curiosity necessary for the role. Now if she can just find a way to get paid for it!

I don't think there's any doubt that I'll continue with this series. My library has January Thaw, now I just have to make room for it in my January reading schedule.

I highly recommend this fantastic page turner.
This is the first in the series Ive read and the first Ive read from this author. I totally loved this book. Very engaging, laugh out loud moments, very witty, very smart, written very well. I must read more in the series now.
A candy cane serial killer. He targets women of average build, brunettes only, and those who have an online dating ad account. After he kills the ones he is looking for, he leaves a candy cane at the scene of the crime. Very unique in story line and very intriguing. I was trying to guess the killer through the whole book, but man, was I wrong. Totally unexpected. I love the main character, Mira James. She is a strong, smart character.
I love that it takes place in snowy Minne-snow-ta!!!
This is a great edition to your Christmas reading shelf!

This one may have been my favorite book of the series. I was a little skeptical at first because it was in her hometown so not the usual characters, but it worked and went into Mira’s past. That added an emotional piece to the series. I predicted the killer was the reporter towards the beginning. And finally at the end of the book she slept with Johnny after 8 or 9 books of back and forth etc. Overall enjoyed it

I am obviously hooked on this series. This book was the best of the bunch! A chilling read with a dangerous serial killer targeting women who look much like our main character. I had it figured out 3 separate times but always ended up off that individual. Right to the end, I discounted his identity as the killer. A very satisfying read!

Oltre a lei altre donne sono state uccise in altre città.

Too scary for me

I expect a mystery to have some scariness, but this was too scary from beginning to end. I figured out the killer almost as soon as he appeared in the story

Being that it was december and the heavy theme at my local library is christmas, I was wandering the shelves and this book and author caught my eye. Now, this series is not new to me. I have picked up one of these before (can't remember which one) and I have the "June" on my TBR shelf so there you have it...I have met Mira the main character before. AND I liked her.
Mira is a spunky young woman, a great character, who is just getting by in a little town, working two jobs.
In this installment of the series, Mira is laid off from one of her jobs, and its xmas time, so she goes home. A home that has a few unpleasant memories. (Whose home and home town doesn't?)
But Mira finds solace in reconnecting with her mother and a few people she remembers from high school. Since this is a murder mystery, it doesn't take long for Mira to involve herself in a mystery that centers on the murder of a high school classmate who looks eerily like her....what is going on in the midwest every december? Mira just has to know!
This is a great series!! Mira is a great character! And this one had me guessing....ok, so I had a little inkling who it was ....but I enjoyed the author's explanation all the same. Good mystery!!!

December Dread is an excellent mystery I very much recommend. The Murder-By-Month series is set in small-town Battle Creek, Minnesota. The main character, Mira James, is a librarian and freelance reporter.

Due to a temporary library shutdown, Mira returns to her hometown of Paynesville, Minnesota to stay with her Mom and take a Private Investigator Training course. For the last several years the Candy Cane Killer has murdered women who fit Mira’s physical description during the month of December. Mira winds up entangled in the mystery and sleuthing, searching for the killer in a variety of interesting and humorous scenarios. Returning to Paynesville after a lengthy absence also sets Mira up for some soul searching as she reconnects with old high school friends, acquaintances and enemies.

I loved this book. It was often funny but not outrageous. Mira’s best friend, Mrs. Berns, is in her eighties, tough, ready for anything and hilarious. And the mystery was well-plotted and engaging.

Readers who enjoy laughter with their murder mysteries will appreciate this book.

I only read this book once- in kindle edition but I accidentally clicked on the wrong one and can't get rid of the other one.
This was my favorite book in this series! I loved that Mira James went home to her widowed mother over Christmas. This showed a lot of growth on Mira's part. She also grew up to finally let her father's drunk driving death and her anger toward him go. And lastly, she grew up and let high school prejudices go. She showed a lot of character changes for the good. The mystery was wonderful- a Candy Cane Killer. Unfortunately, I figured out who the killer was early on, and this was odd for me. I am usually surprised at the unveiling of the murderer. This was a warm and fuzzy book in many ways. I loved meeting her mother on her own turf and understanding her, although I think that Mira should have been spanked for her attitude long before instead of her wonderful mother being so understanding and allowing Mira space. I hope that she continues to grow. I know that the mysteries cannot get better than this!

I liked this mystery!

This was cute and cozy except, some connections were weird. I think the mystery was a bit weak, the way the main character, Mira, went about her sleuthing was a stretch (imo). It didn't make sense how she suddenly had this inkling to get this major breakthrough.

Additionally, I believe the beginning part of the story had unnecessary detail that distracted from the mystery - I understand the reader needed to know that Mira had a complicated relationship with her mom, but the entire bit about the library losing funding and someone paying for a PI course was a bit odd. I was also a little .. under an influence when I was introduced to Mrs Berns so the connection felt weak there as well. but Mrs Berns had some good zingers so I'll allow it.

This is a good story if you're just looking for a mid30s (ish) woman who is trying to find her way in the world and then also there is a mystery.. but would not recommend it if you are in search of just a mystery.

S/O to NetGalley for the ARC of this re-release with updated content from the original!

This is by far the best book in this series. In December Dread, Mira goes back home for a couple of weeks at Christmas since the library is closed. Her boss gives her the money to attend a PI course as her Christmas bonus. Along with having to face her past and pass her PI class, the Candy Cane Killer who kills one slim brunette every week in December has started killing in Minnesota this year. When her best friend from sixth grade is one of his victims, Mira starts investigating.

The tension is thick here. The killer's identity isn't revealed until the end (though if you read books like this, you can probably make a good guess before the reveal) and there are several viable suspects. There is also a nice side story with lots of heart as Mira has to confront her past.

What keeps this from a full five stars for me is the author's need to constantly push her agenda and her contempt for people of faith. This is not a family friendly series.

I cannot deny that I love this series. Part-time librarian, regional paper columnist, and amateur detective Mira James is preparing for Christmas when a candy-cane-leaving serial killer hits the Battle Lake Area. Soon, women who look just like Mira, brunettes in their twenties and thirties, are barring themselves in their houses and joining self defense classes in hopes of giving themselves a little peace of mind.
The author Jess Lourey does a great job creating interesting and funny characters while capturing the atmosphere of small town life. I kept switching my guess as to who the murderer was. Lourey's book have a bit of everything: humor, suspense, heart, and good writing.

I'm going to keep reading the murder by month series. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quick, but good read. I would read it again in a few years (it would make a great vacation or airport book).

These stories are progressively improving. There is less of the outrageous characters and situations, and more of the mystery element. Though I figured out the Candy Cane Killer's identity early on, there were still enough clues to lead you to second guess it. I love Mrs. Berns, and really can't get enough of her. There was also a lot less of the questioning doubt of Mira's relationship with Johnny...I was tiring of that, so glad that she finally put that issue to bed...pun intended! We learn more of Mira's early life and high school struggles, and she learns that her self involvement caused her to miss out on what was happening to others at the same time. All in all, this is one of the best books of the series.

This one took me longer than it should have to read. I liked Mira and I loved Mrs Berns, but the serial killer who strikes every year at Christmas was ridiculous. The parts told from the killer’s point of view in which they’re actually having conversations with a Barbie doll were laughable, and the pseudopsychology thrown in to explain the killer’s actions was deeply problematic. Also, a dog dies. I figured out the killer fairly early but it was so obvious I thought perhaps I was wrong, but no. There’s also a boyfriend mentioned who shows up at the end and we’re supposed to be happy to see him, but this was the first book in the series I’ve read, so I didn’t care. Perhaps this series is best read in order. I’ll try another in this series just because Mrs Berns was so fun.

Home for the holidays!

Mire is suddenly forced to go home for the holidays and you guessed, more murder. Although Mira and Mrs. Berns find themselves in the middle of another killer on the loose, there is a lot more going on. This series has been great and it was no surprise that she did well at both the private investigators course but at the self defense one too. It was even better when Mrs. Berns showed up to spend the holidays. Lots happens for Mira like facing her face with her classmates and her father's death and then being able to move on from there. I her story builds on all that happened and we get updates on everything that happened.

This was a fast-paced enjoyable whodunit mystery!

I'm definitely a fan of this author and always head into her novels expecting an atmospheric read that hooks my attention from start to finish and always keeps me guessing.

I thought the plot, pacing and characters in this storyline were really well done and I loved that this Mystery had a Christmas theme too it.

I'd definitely check this book out if you like a good whodunit thriller and as always I look forward to reading more from here in the future!

Thank you Jess Lourey, Net Galley and Thomas & Mercer for providing me with an ARC of this book!

This series has some very likeable characters.

In December, the library is closed for two weeks and Mira is off to PI school in her home town. Since it is December, she is suddenly home for Christmas and faces a lot of the emotions she has tried to leave behind.

If you do not like chapters in the point of view of the killer, skip this one. It is not my favorite thing either but we do learn a bit of background which may help you figure out who the killer is.

I borrowed a copy from the public library.

Duuuuuuude. I loved this book. It was such a page turner. It only took me two days to read it??! I found it under mystery at the library. Seeing ‘December’ in the title piqued my interest. I was a looking for a holiday mystery book and this book delivered. The cover does not look like much, but it’s one of my favorite mysteries I’ve read all year. Can’t wait to read the rest in the series. The main character is so funny and I found myself laughing out loud at times. I did not want this book to end.

Thank you NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the eARC.
This was another delightful addition to the series that sees Mira going home for Christmas to her mother's. She's dreading it because she doesn't have many happy memories of her youth.
There's a serial killer on the loose who has killed one of her friends from school and when Mrs. Berns comes to visit the
two of them can't help but scheme to find the killer. They end up having several very scary moments, but the ending is so sweet and made Mira much more real in my mind.
Great fun read.

I’m not quite sure how a book fashioned around a serial killer can be described as cozy, but that’s how it goes. There’s definitely some depth around Mira and her attempt to re-contextualize her high school days after her father’s death, as well as remake her relationship with her mother. I’ve always enjoyed her bff Mrs. Berns, although I’m not quite sure how an 80-year-old pulls so many men…the fold-over boobs as cleavage comment made me laugh. The cozy part is all these relationships, so I’m along for the ride despite not enjoying any time I’m supposedly in the mind of the killer.

Cried at the end

This is probably my favorite novel in the series. Seriously i bawled like I ran my pinkie tie into the corner of the couch.

The ending was beautifully written. It brought back my own memories of struggling to fit in with my own family; feeling left out. Then growing up and bring afraid of letting my emotions out; or letting someone in.

I do have to say, finally Mira and Johnny!!

Another great entry in the murder by month series. Mira and Mrs. Berns make a great team. It’s Christmas time and for the first time in over 10 years, Mira goes to spend time with her mother and attend a PI training class. Mira helps to solve the case of the candy cane killer by being the last victim that he targets but her recent self defense training saves her life and the FBI rides to the rescue. Looking forward to next installment of this series.

This is a well written, quirky murder mystery for the holidays. Mira is a character you can not help but like and you will find yourself rooting for her as she works out issues in her life and finds the killer. This is not a cozy mystery and although not graphic it is creepy and the killer is a bit scary.

Ok - I got books 8-10 for free, and did not start this series with book 1, which may explain why I found the female protagonist whiny and egoistic, and her "sidekick" completely over the top unrealistic.
Sorry, maybe it was just this book, will see if I like #9 any better.
Not the author's fault at all, and I am not saying the book is bad, just that I personally did not like it.

I really liked all the previous books, and this one is good for what it is, but I don't like it. There isn't really anything cozy about it. I know Lourey writes thrillers, and I will not read them. I do not like reading about a psychopathic serial killer, and a sex scene in the epilogue does not make it a cozy mystery. I think this may be my last Lourey book.

Thought it was fitting to read this in December even though I bought it on a whim at a used book store in Palm Springs. I don’t have much to say but, I enjoyed the journey of this book. Wouldn’t read it again but the plot was interesting and the writing was just okay.
