Beyond the Ice #2

Ice Cold Heart

Rate this book
Good boys don’t date the coach’s daughter, but a date isn't what she wants...

Cole

Hockey is my life. I play hard, and I don’t lose. The Frozen Four is at my fingertips, but my eligibility is at risk thanks to one frustrating class. Enter Avery Dalton—beautiful, independent, and utterly off limits. She’s my coach’s daughter and his choice for a tutor. Too bad she isn’t interested… Until she offers me a secret deal her dad can never find out about. She’ll help me pass, and I’ll help her forget about her ex. Friends with very specific benefits. Except for one little problem—I can’t stop trying to win her heart.

Avery

I don’t date hockey players. I don’t befriend them or kiss them in the library either. No one told Cole Mathis that. His perfect good looks and golden boy reputation are everything I should avoid after my last disastrous ex, but when he needs my help, I offer him a deal. Staying detached should be easy, but my weakness is apparently a hockey playing country boy with a wicked sense of humor and a talented mouth. As we get closer, I cling to my rules and hope he doesn’t figure out the truth—he's the one person who could break me.

Ice Cold Heart is the second book in the Beyond the Ice series of interconnected standalones featuring the hockey players of Teagan University—a coach's daughter, black cat/golden boy, he falls first, college hockey romance with plenty of heat and one or two unsolicited duck pics.

As Avery puts it “I was not prepared for Cole’s dirty mouth” but boy was I grateful to read this story early! As the second installment in the Beyond the Ice series, you get all the fun banter, sexy talk and spicy scenes as the previous book with more of a suspenseful twist along the way.

Avery is guarded, as she should be considered the past she is trying to run from. Telling herself she will not give her heart to anyone, especially a hockey player, but befriending the good hearted, golden retriever player seemed to throw a wrench in her plans. Not to mention a very consistent string of text messages from an ex that doesn’t seem to get the memo he is no longer relevant, it seems Avery’s constant worry about serial killers and bad things happening in small towns, isn’t too far off…

Cole, the good natured guy who is not only willing to mow his elderly neighbors lawn, but will duck sit his roommates very dramatic duck (Henry is Queen), only wants one thing for himself, and that’s Avery. He’s going to convince her, she is deserving of love and if he’s got to make a deal with her involving
Organisms in exchange.. you bet his firm ass he’s going to do it.

Nikki Hall hit it out of the park with this one (yet again). She creates characters you just want to keep reading out, knowing how their happily ever afters play out (que the extended bonus scene, Nikki you are true hero with those).

DNF 56% - Unfortunately this one was not for me - which is a shame bc Cole Mathis is a 10/10.

2 stars for Cole + Henry 🫶🏼✨🦆

It takes a lot for me to DNF, I usually don’t do it…. But I couldn’t handle it any more. Avery was too insufferable for me. I did however skimmed right in over to end bc of her trash ex and had to see how that played out.

I love a good hockey romance. I'm not sure what it is but they always get me hooked. I'm a fan of this series so far! I couldn't wait to read Coles book. I knew he would be a big teddy bear. And he was, with a dirty mouth. However, it took me a bit to tolerate Avery. There was just something about her I couldn't connect with. She was a turd to Cole pretty much the whole time. As well as her dad honestly. But I liked the plot..and the other characters and will definitely read about Reece!

This was book #2 in the Beyond the Ice series and it didn't disappoint. Cole is an amazing MMC. He's a total golden retriever boyfriend. He patient, kind, and loyal. He's a sweet country boy who normally doesn't do casual sex, but for Avery he is willing to bend his rules. Avery is closed off to relationships due to past traumas. She's always trying to push him away. But he sees her and understands her. I loved seeing Cole gradually break through her walls. They had an undeniable bond that pulled them together. Her fear of serial killers was very relatable! HA! They were so sweet together. I enjoyed Avery and Marco's friendship too! Henry the duck is just as cute as ever.

Tropes:
Forbidden/secret relationship
He fell first
Golden retriever/black cat
Found family
Tutor with benefits

I can't wait for book #3. Thank you Nikki Hall and Wordsmith Publicity for this ARC. This is my honest review.

Finished this book very late last night. Definitely a good book when you can’t put it down to go to bed!

I loved the characters and found the development of their relationship to be interesting and realistic. Avery’s attitude is understandable based on what she’s been through which is shared with readers. She comes off as snarky, but underneath the snark and red lipstick is a young woman who has been emotionally and psychologically beaten by people she should have been able to trust.

Cole is an absolute dream - he isn’t perfect, but he comes darn close. He recognizes Avery as his dream girl, and is willing to compromise what he really wants (her to be his girlfriend) for friendship with specific benefits. He lets her dictate the parameters of their relationship or at least it’s label, while he slowly gains her trust. He values her and respects her boundaries, but he isn’t going anywhere and wants to make sure no one else takes advantage of her in the meantime.

Henry the house duck is hilarious and fabulous.

I would have liked a little more development of Avery’s relationship with her Dad at the end. The story has some slightly unexpected suspense in the last few chapters that brings this story to a satisfying end.

I definitely want to go back and read the first book in the series while waiting for book #3 to be released.

I received a free ARC from the author and Grey’s PR; and I am voluntarily leaving an unbiased review.

ARC REVIEW

4/5 ⭐️
2.5 🌶️

Cole found his mystery dream girl and it turns out to be his coach’s daughter. Avery transferred to TU to get away from her crappy mom and ex boyfriend. She agrees to be Cole’s platonic friend and tutor. In exchange for lit lessons, they agree to friends with benefits. Avery can’t deny her changing feelings especially when Cole will do anything to win her over.

I have read a lot of hockey romances and they tend to blend together, but this one really stood out. This book had so much character! I absolutely loved both main characters. I love the dynamic of Cole being such a golden retriever while Avery is this badass. I couldn’t put this down! Literally finished it in one sitting!

ARC review for Ice Cold Heart by Nikki Hall

Thanks to Nikki and Wordsmith Publicity for the ARC opportunity!

Featured tropes: coach's daughter, secret/forbidden relationship, he falls first, golden retriever/black cat, found family, country boy/city girl, "Who hurt you?"

Trigger warning: past relationship trauma with former partner and parent, perceived parental abandonment, unintentional/slipped drug use

Review: 4/5

Another banger from Nikki Hall. I was sure I was going to love Cole as the MMC and I was not wrong. I was happy to be back at TU!

Things I liked:
- Cole. I was fully expecting to love Cole as the MMC of his book and I was not disappointed. Cole checked a lot of boxes. He's a big 'ole cinnamon roll but will throw down if he has to. I am 100% a sucker for a hockey romance (despite not knowing a damn thing about it) and I think it's because those hockey guys all seem to have the right kind of dirty talk. I was here for it.
- Avery is a complex FMC. She's been manipulated for most of her life and we get to come along for the ride while she discovers this and finds her way to the truth.
- The plot. There was a little suspense at the end that I was fully not expecting and it took me by complete surprise. Honestly I would have taken even a little more build up to the suspense throughout the book compared to the relative "ignore it" attitude that's present for much of it but, rest assured, what we get was still compelling.
- There were a few places I noted as I was reading for both Reece and Mase that have me so excited for their books. Please, for the love of all that is holy, tell us what Reece does when a lady likes strawberries. And I am just salivating to know every dirty detail about Mase and his history. All very small tidbits sprinkled through Cole's book but the little details have me hyped for the next books.
- I loved Marco. From the second we meet him, I just adored him. I mean, how can you not love a guy who uses a word like "dickmatized" in casual conversation. Anyways, he's the best background influence on our FMC and is just the best friend to her. Also, I need to read something about Marco and Stephen. A little novella, hell, just a couple of chapters, and I would be a happy girl.
- Obviously no review could be complete without calling out the absolute love we all must have for Henry. Henry is a treasure and rules that hockey house with an iron fist and it makes me laugh that she has every one of those hulking hockey boys wrapped around her tiny duck finger (I mean, she doesn't have fingers but you know what I mean). Henry will forever be my favorite book pet and I will accept all the unsolicited duck pics Cole would want to send me.

Things I disliked, missed the mark, or I missed in general:
- There wasn't a ton of Eva and Gavin. I get it, they already had their book. But I was fully prepared for Eva to come in, guns blazing, and have a good come-to-Jesus moment to with either Cole or Avery (or, both). That being said, we do get a wonderful glimpse into Eva and her mystifying insight for everyone around her toward the end of the book. It made me write a note that said, "Eva, the queen, as usual." so it's fully on-brand for her.
- I would have loved to see a little more father/daughter bonding between Avery and Coach once they finally used their words. And I would have also loved to see some blow back or a confrontation with Avery's mom (preferably from both Avery and Coach). I would eat that content up as a future bonus scene. Just FYI, Nikki.

I once again enjoyed this visit to the TU Universe. As I've indicated I'm already very excited for Reece and Mase's books and am looking forward to continued duck action.

(Received as an ARC for my honest review)

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌟
Spice: 🌶🌶.5

I really enjoy this series. I loved the first book (Gavin & Eva's) and fell in love with Cole in that book. I couldn't wait for the ole' good country boy to have his own book. I was really excited when I saw it was going to be with the coach's daughter who wore red lipstick. Leave to the good boy to get a feisty girl. One who he shouldn't want. It left for quite a book to be dead. I really enjoyed it!

Tropes:
🏒 College Hockey Romance
🪿 Country Boy/City Girl
🏒 Coach’s Daughter
🪿 Unsolicited Duck Pics
🏒 Golden Retriever x Black Cat
🪿 Found Family
🏒 Tutor in Exchange for O's

Cole needs to buckle down and finish ihs last class to graduate this next year. The one subject that he had problems with, English. He had struggled with this subject for his entire life. He really needs help, but didn't trust the school's tutoring services for past bad experiences.

This book starts with Cole in the library getting the glimpse of girl with the red lipstick in the library while trying to study. He can't seem to pull his view off her. She comes to his rescue when he starts noticing girls giggling and trying to flirt with him. He doesn't want the attention and she saves him by trying to act like their together. It's not his first time seeing her before. He noticed her in the coaches office one day then left. He doesn't know why or how she knows the coach, though.

They both leave that day with the possibility of being friends. Avery had no interest in hockey players or anyone really. She wants to buckle down, finish school and get away from there. She hasn't been around her father since she was little and left behind her mother and ex due to something horrible happening. She feels like she's not wanted or loved by her parents.

Cole is called to the coaches office one day and told that he has a tutor for him. Not one with the school, but someone that can help. To his surprise is Avery, the coaches daughter. Avery has no plans on tutoring Cole. It takes Cole talking her into this and offering to help her out.

Cole likes to share secrets with her. He'll say, "Hey, want to know a secret?" It's really cute, and Avery often finds herself wrapped up in the good guy that Cole is. She throws Cole for a loop though when she admits a secret of her own. That she never had an O that wasn't brought own by herself. She makes the agreement that for every assignment they finish, she'll let him give her one. Sounds nice, right? Well, she makes Cole work for it. She had a lot of trust issues.

All to soon lines start to blur and she finds herself backing away. That is the last thing Cole wants now. He's got it bad for Avery, since he first her. He knows he can't have her, or isn't supposed to, but he can't stay away. Even if she tries to push him away.

Cole has such a dirty mouth. I don't know what it is about the good boys having the dirtiest mouths, but I love it! I do wish there was a little more spice to be a benefits book, but I'm a girl who loves a book with a good amount of spice.

This book gives you secret relationships, forbidden, secrets, inner thoughts of being enough and rivals that know to much about the girl your crushing on. I love hockey romances and Nikki Hall writes some pretty great ones.

(I received an ARC for this book)

Trigger Warnings include:
cheating (not between MCs), a situation involving Rohypnol (not between MCs, and no sexual acts on page)

I signed up for this ARC right after my team didn't make it into the Stanley Cup Playoffs. I was heartbroken, and desperate for any droplet of hockey. And (still heartbroken) future me is grateful for past heartbroken me! If you're looking for another college hockey romance to pop onto your offseason tbr while you lick your hockey related wounds, include this one! Does it get better than a hockey player who has a soft spot for the coach's daughter AND a duck?! Cole’s mystery girl keeps popping up in his life, and he knows he’s hooked. He definitely, and very happily, becomes attached to Avery. And he’s not a bit sorry about it either! They enter into a “help me and I’ll help you” pact. A great foundation for a friendship…with plenty of benefits. Although it hurt, he respected any and all boundaries Avery put into place. Her past threatened to knock down the door she put in behind. All while poor Cole was focused on banging down the walls she built. Cole is definitely 10/10. He’s kind, supportive, considerate, and selfless. But I struggled so hard to fully enjoy Avery as a character. She was in her head a little too much, and instead of the character growth I was looking forward to, I feel like she didn’t come out of her cocoon quite enough. (This is a me problem, so my rating does not reflect this.)

While I definitely enjoyed this book, and everything between Cole and Avery, some bits just seemed a bit dragged on for length, or to make things more ‘suspenseful’. Though the suspenseful moments that were actually involved did my heart in just fine!

My Favorite Quotes:
• “I’m obsessed with your lips, and when Coach finds out I kissed you, he’s going to make me bag skate until I puke, but I wouldn’t change a thing.”
• “Eyes on me. I want you to see how much I love the taste of you.”
• “The only hockey player you’re fucking is me. You need a release? You want to test out your newfound freedom? Use me.”
• “When I fuck you, it won’t be easy and it won’t be quick, but it’s sure as hell going to be dirty.”
• “I dream of seeing your red lipstick smeared all over my cock while I fuck your pretty mouth.”
• “I want you to fuck me until I can’t walk tomorrow.” “Yes, ma’am.”
• “Watch how well you take me. Sliding in and out of your pretty pussy. Look how gorgeous we are together.”
• “Face down, ass up.” “Thought you’d never ask.” “I’m not asking.”
• “None of it is as important to me as you are.”
• “She’s my everything. I’m not letting her go. Ever.”

With the Frozen Four within his grasp, Cole is willing to do anything to play, even accepting help from a tutor to keep up with his grades. The only problem is the tutor assigned to him is the headstrong coed with red lipstick he'd seen in the library that had instantly caught his attention. A problem only secondary to the fact that she also happens to be the coach's estranged daughter, who made a bargain with her in exchange for her tutoring services. Avery, who is skittish after a disastrous end to her last relationship, decides to help Cole with his class—in exchange for some other favors. She's determined to keep it casual and fun. No strings attached, but how long can that last when her hockey playing hunk who wears his heart on his sleeve?

This book really starts off right away with the romance, and while it briefly threw me for a loop, it really worked in this particular story. This boy fell hard on the first page, and honestly, I loved that. He was kind and considerate to both Avery and his teammates, as well as open and honest with his coach and his tutor about his learning struggles. Also, I applaud the author for showing his learning issues and for Avery finding new ways to help him succeed.

Speaking of Avery, that poor girl had gone through it and I understood why she was so skittish to trust anyone, but was so pleased when she finally opened up to not only Cole but to her father. Those father/daughter moments both wholesome and healing were some of my favorite parts in the book. And the story towards the end was wild. Was not expecting that turn.

But I must admit, my absolute favorite character is the reality TV-watching, drama-dabbling duck of the house, Miss Henry. Her antics had me absolutely rolling. Looking forward to seeing more of her in the next book, and then some!

Favorite Quotes:
"Cole made me feel cherished. How was I supposed to keep my heart from dropping at his feet?"

Ducks were easy. Human women, not so much.

I am so excited to share this review with you. I got to read Nikki Halls arc of Ice Cold Heart and oh my goodness!!
This story starts off hot right from the beginning. 🥵 Cole is the most patient, understanding and loving man on the planet. But his possessive darker side is hot as sin. He gives her all the power. He lets her know what his goals are but let's her heal at her own pace until he knows when the time is right. The things Avery went through hurt my heart badly. Her constantly having to try to figure out what is the truth or a lie from what she grew up knowing hit home a little too hard for me. I absolutely loved her fear of stranger dangers and serial killers. I related so much to it haha. Her quick-wittedness, sass and determination was amazing. Cole met her head on and helped her become comfortable with her own body and her desires.

Cole loving Henry makes me laugh and feel so happy. And now I need to know if Next Best Ninja is real!? Henry's little Harlem is so unfair to the rest of us haha but oh so cute. Henry accepting Avery instantly made me heart so happy and now I may need to sew a jersey for my Henry 🤣

My heart hurts for Cole. I'm a teacher and the second he described what it's like when he reads I knew INSTANTLY he has a learning disability and with a few changes to the way he approaches it would make a world of difference. I'm grateful Avery supports and NEVER uses it against him.

Everyone helping the two of them as well as helping her build her relationship with her Dad made me so happy. They are both just socially awkward people but her dad is a Saint and I wish he would adopt me.

When (bad word) hits the fan we get to see how many people truly care about her. Marco is my new best friend and I hope we see more of him and a certain someone in the future. Eva appears significantly less in this story but still had a huge impact. I hope we learn more about my poor Mase. I just want to hug him.
Again I enjoyed it all and who knew hockey sticks could also be used to hit balls and not just Pucks. Please go preorder and read this amazing story so I can talk to people about it!
Nikki never disappoints qnd I cannot wait until the next books! 💋🏒

This book is Amazing and it was such a pleasure for me to read, I loved it. Unfortunately for me I haven't read book 1, but that didn't effect the enjoyment of book 2 even though there are interconnecting characters. It reads pretty easily and you understand the dynamics of the group of friends, etc. I definitely will read book 1 though, now that I have fallen in love with this world.
Hockey Romance is one of my favorite tropes to read and Nikki Hall has written a fabulous one...I loved the way Nikki has written characters that are flawed in some way, not in a bad way though, some flaws are beautiful and can make a person unique. Cole has a learning disability which is effecting his classes in school and he needs to do well in his classes otherwise he wouldn't be able to play Hockey. He is a superb Athlete, so swoon worthy, very patient, kind and super sexy. Avery has her issues too, academically she excels, she is also the coaches daughter and her father asks her to tutor Cole to bring his grades up. Cole and Avery are opposites but the chemistry between them is so potent and they are so hot together. Avery is guarded though, she has been hurt and betrayed in the past, so she seems satisfied with just orgasms and nothing else. Cole is a different story, he falls first and wants more than just sex. He will have to convince Avery they could be something special.
I couldn't but this book down, it was very addictive and I am looking forward to reading more from this world Nikki Hall has created. Excellent. 5 Stars- Cat W.

Ice Cold Heart by Nikki Hall was not what I was expecting. I loved the drama, suspense, more drama, and some spice. Nikki Hall has created a wonderful world with this spicy contemporary hockey romance. I love the tutor-to-lovers trope with a little bit of opposites attract thrown in. I thought the storyline was original, written in vivid detail, and kept me turning the pages until the end. I could not put this book down with all the excitement going on; I had to see what would happen next. The characters were complex and had an undeniable chemistry. This book does touch on some dark themes and topics. I laughed, cried, and laughed some more and threw a few fist-pumps in the air. This book is the second in the Beyond the Ice series and can be read as a standalone, but I recommend starting at the beginning!!!

Cole was the golden retriever H, who was obsessed, determined, and the golden boy of the hockey team. I enjoyed his possessiveness and patience when it came to Avery. Avery was very guarded with herself. She was witty, stubborn, and trying to find herself. Her story was heartbreaking, and I just wanted to hug her. The chemistry these two shared was explosive and addicting. The journey Cole and Avery went through together was exciting and beautiful. I loved reading about their slow fall-in-love romance. Well, Cole knew it from the minute he saw her, but it took Avery a minute. Hold on to your hockey stick for a rollercoaster of a book, and bring some chocolate and tissues, too. -By Brooke

This story has a hot hockey player, forbidden lust with the coach’s daughter, a snarky, quirky, paranoid-of-serial-killers heroine and a even duck so really, what more do you need? Nothing, nothing at all. Cole and Avery meet by chance on campus and share a very hot kiss. He wants more but she isn’t looking for a relationship, so they agree to be ‘just friends’. Unfortunately for them, her dad knows Avery is the perfect person to help his star player pass the required English course that’s been dogging him for multiple semesters.

Cole’s learning disability is making it nearly impossible for him to complete the course and the college’s tutoring program was a huge failure for Cole in every way, so he won’t use it again. He’s grateful for the help and really wants to get to know Avery better but she wants a friends-with-benefits arrangement in exchange for tutoring him. He’s not at all opposed to the idea, but he’s not entirely comfortable with the arrangement. After all, her father has the power to ensure Cole has no future in the NHL and he will exercise it if anyone touches his daughter.

Avery actually likes Cole probably a bit too much. But after being betrayed by the two people she trusted most, she won’t open her heart to anyone again. Besides, she’s in no position for a relationship anyway as she navigates the unknown at a new school and living with the father she hasn’t seen since she was eight years old, the one who never wanted anything to do with her after the divorce.

I really like these characters, despite Avery’s best attempts to be closed off and keep the world at arms’ length. Cole is just a big old sweetheart, which she recognizes early on and they’re both so very loveable. Their story is a lot of fun with a great balance of sweet and steamy goodness. This is my first book by the author but certainly won’t be the last.

This is Book 2 of the Beyond the Ice Series!!

I was lucky enough to receive as an ARC 🥰

Nikki Hall’s Ice Cold Heart is a delightful blend of romance, humour, and heartfelt moments that will leave readers thoroughly satisfied. The chemistry between Cole and Avery is electric, making their journey from reluctant partners to passionate lovers both believable and compelling.

Cole Mathis is a standout character—his blend of athleticism, country charm, and unexpected tenderness makes him an irresistible hero. His determination to succeed in his academics and his unwavering support for Avery add depth to his character, showcasing him as more than just a star athlete. Avery Dalton, with her cynicism and intelligence, is the perfect foil to Cole’s sunny disposition. Her gradual softening and openness to Cole’s advances are portrayed with sensitivity and realism, making her transformation deeply engaging.

The forced proximity trope is executed flawlessly, creating plenty of opportunities for tension and intimacy. Hall’s writing shines in these moments, balancing humour and emotion to craft scenes that are both heartwarming and steamy. The dynamic of Cole falling first adds a sweet twist to their romance, making his earnest efforts to win Avery over all the more endearing.

The supporting cast and the backdrop of Teagan University’s hockey culture add richness to the story, providing a vibrant setting that enhances the main narrative. Hall’s portrayal of the hockey world is detailed and immersive, making it a treat for sports romance enthusiasts.

Ice Cold Heart is a stellar addition to the Beyond the Ice series. With its well-developed characters, engaging plot, and sizzling romance, it’s a must-read for fans of college sports romances. If you’re looking for a romance that will make you laugh and swoon, Ice Cold Heart is the book for you.

Nikki Hall never disappoints. Fans of Elle Kennedy’s hockey series’ will absolutely love Beyond the Play.
TW: cheating, drugging and attempted rape

It is a very fast paced story, with a very patient MMC who wants to do right by the FMC. We met Cole in Book 1. A lil cowboy in the big city… and Book 2 delivers the coach’s daughter from the big city, Avery.

Avery up and leaves Dallas after catching her now ex-boyfriend in a compromising position. Despite having an estranged relationship with her father (wish this was explored a little more), Coach immediately welcomes her into his house as she adjusts to a new school and city. Avery makes quick friends with Marco on the school newspaper - and while it seemed like the head of paper, Sebastian, was going to cause trouble, we get nothing from him.

Coach threatens the team that his daughter is not to be touched but trusts Cole to befriend her and let her tutor him. Cole grapples with lying to his coach, while Avery grapples with not wanting to be in a relationship again. All to say, I’ll never be able to eat spaghetti and meatballs again without getting 🥵

There is a bit of a third act breakup that leads to a very dark and unsettling chapter with Avery and her ex. And despite Eva being intertwined through the previous Wild Card football series, and the FMC of Book 1, her and Gavin are barely in this story.

Again, this is a fast paced book. A handful of loose ends that were rushed or seemingly left unresolved, that I felt took away from the story build and character development.

Ice Cold Heart – Nikki Hall (ARC review)

Another amazing read from Nikki Hall and a great continuation of the Beyond the Ice series. I could not put it down ❤ The chemistry between Cole and Avery is everything.

What do you do when you want to start a conversation with your dream girl, but you promised her you would just be friends, you send her an unsolicited duck pick of course.

Cole is a hockey playing country boy with a wicked sense of humor and a talented mouth who needs a tutor and wants to land the girl of his dreams. Except that dream girl ends up being his coach’s daughter and now his tutor. She is off-limits, yet he still can’t stop thinking about her and wanting her to be his.

Avery is a guarded city girl on the run from her past and just entered her “fuck it” era wanting to prove all boys are all the same. She agrees to tutor the “golden boy” of hockey with a friend with benefits exchange. Only to realize his reputation may actually hold up and she might be falling for him.

I loved seeing Cole and Avery spin in circles around each other, the dance of I want to but I shouldn’t from Avery and the dance of I want to but I don’t want to scare her away from Cole was done so well. Such a good read of learning to let others in, accepting help/realizing you don’t always have to do things on your own, and creating your chosen family. That family including Henry’s new duckling Sunshine of course <3

Can’t wait for the next book !

I loved Cole in the previous book and I think I fell in love with him a little bit more after this book but Avery said it best "I was not prepared for Cole's mouth"🥵. Its always the sweet golden boys that have the filthiest mouths but im not mad about it. He is the definition of a golden retriever boyfriend. He is super sweet, caring and showed up for Avery in all the ways that she needed.

Avery was burned in the past so she is hesitant on any relationships. Cole and Avery struck up a deal but that is obliterated pretty quickly when lines are crossed and feelings become involved. She definitely makes Cole work hard to win her over. The found family and the friendship with Marco was just what she needed to begin to heal from the past.

I loved that Henry the duck had several appearances throughout the book. My fingers are crossed for a Stephen and Marco book to happen. I'm excited for Reece next but I really can't wait for the elusive Mase's book.

🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️

Hockey fans will love this slow burn, Spicy romance.
Reverse Grumpy/Sunshine, Off Limits and Coach's Daughter.
Cole has a big heart of Gold. The boy next door, helping the elderly and genuinely just helps everyone. He is their Star Hockey player but if his Literature score doesn't improve, he will be failing.
Avery has finally had enough of her manipulative ex and mother and decided to call upon her distant father.
She has really had the worst experience and it makes sense why she is aversed to relationships and Hockey players. She is grumpy and angry totally opposite of Cole.
Cole literally fell in love with her at first sight. He was determined he will be marrying her until she friend zoned him haha.
But this man is so amazing, he was confident in knocking her walls down. The heated chemistry these two have was palpable. Cole may be a cinnamon roll but that mouth and body of his was sinful in the bedroom. The way he gave butterflies, I felt them!!
Loved the group of friends and found family. Can't forget to mention little Henry, she is the reason there is Duck pic! 🤣 Loved how all the men treat her like the princess she is.
Is it worth risking losing his place in the Hockey team? Can he win her over?
Will She ever get away from her ex?
There was definitely drama with her ex, so much humour, witty banter, lots of Duck love, found family, heartache, love and spice.
Can't wait for Reece's story next, although Mase is super interesting.

“F*ck, Avery, you feel so good. Watch how well you take me. Sliding in and out of your pretty pu$$y. Look how gorgeous we are together.”

This book is Amazing and it was such a pleasure for me to read,I loved it.
Unfortunately for me I haven't read book 1,but that didn't effect the enjoyment of book 2 even though there are interconnecting characters..It reads pretty easily and you understand the dynamics of the group of friends etc.I definately will read book 1 though now that I have fallen in love with this world.
Hockey Romance is one of my favourite tropes to read and Nikki Hall has witten a fabulous one...I loved the way Nikki has written characters that are flawed in some way,not in a bad way though some flaws are beautiful and can make a person unique.
Cole has a learning disability which is effecting his classes in school and he needs to do well in his classes otherwise he wouldn't be able to play Hockey..He is a superb Athlete,so swoon worthy, very patient, kind and super sexy.
Avery has her issues too academically she excels, she is also the coaches daughter and her father asks her to tutor Cole to bring his grades up.
Cole and Avery are opposites but the chemistry between them is so potent and they are so hot together.Avery is guarded though she has been hurt and betrayed in the past,so she seems satisfied with just orgasms and nothing else.
Cole is a different story he falls first and wants more than just sex he will have to convince Avery they could be something special.
I couldn't but this book down it was very addictive and I am looking forward to reading more from this world Nikk Hall has created.
Excellent.

Colt and his city girl

Nikki Hall has again written a book that I could not put down. It was engaging, swoony, lot of sassy banter and a twist you wouldn't expect.
As always, Nikki Hall writes characters that you fall in love with and can't get enough of and Cole was no different. He stole my heart! I mean who wouldn't fall for a hot hockey player who babysits his roommate's duck, has total golden retriever vibes and yet has the $mexy talk down pack. I loved how underneath his good boy exterior there was a dominant, dirty talking bad boy. His patience and understanding with Avery was heartwarming. I appreciated how he never gave up on her although she was so back and forth with him.
Cole was definitely what Avery needed especially after the past trauma she experienced. Their attraction towards each other was instant and off the charts. The electrying chemistry was evident from the start.
I liked Avery but she was not my favorite, I found in many instances she could have had a simple conversation which would have avoided a lot of drama and heartache.
The banter between everyone in this book had me laughing out loud many a times . I also, thoroughly enjoyed the bond between Cole and his roommates as well as the budding friendship between Marco and Avery. As usual, I enjoyed Henry's antics and wanted more. These hockey boys and their duck is sooo damn swoony .
This book definitely drew me in and I enjoyed the little plot twist at the end. Thank you Nikki for another enjoyable book that has me salivating for more.

First person, dual POV: Cole & Avery
Rating: 3.5⭐️
Spice: 2 🌶️
Tropes: hockey romance, secret relationship, golden retriever x black cat, tutor

This is book 2 in the Beyond The Ice series and I admittedly did not read book 1, though I thought I did. And, yes, that’s totally me foreshadowing exactly how book 2 went for me.

I spent the majority of this read thinking “I’ve read this before” but clearly that’s impossible since it’s not releasing until 6/13. But the intense case of Deja vu followed me the whole way through.
I do consider myself a bit of a sports romance connoisseur, with an emphasis on hockey romance. With it being such a hot trope these days, there’s a lot of overlapping on books. It happens, it’s just all in the execution to make it stand out. However, this one seemed like other books that have come out recently.
I’m not saying it’s bad. No, it’s a good book. The writing is enjoyable and so is the storyline. The characters were good (I do have a few bones to pick with Avery, she was a little on the annoying side of black cat, but that’s a fine line that can easily happen with the type of character). What I am saying it doesn’t stand out.
I found myself skimming more often than not because it truly felt like a reread.

If you enjoy a fun and lighthearted college hockey romance, I do recommend giving this series a shot. Again, it was good, it just doesn’t hold up against a lot of hockey romance these days.

Also, I would like a quarter for every FMC named Avery I’ve read in the last couple months…

🏒Ice Cold Heart🏒
Beyond The Ice #2

By Nikki Hall

⭐ 5/5 ❤️ 5/5

🏒 Hockey Romance
🏒Coach's daughter
🏒 College Romance

Avery
A hurt girl who doesn't want to get close

Cole
A heart of gold, caring and sweet

“I love you, and one day, I’m going to marry you. Then you’ll always have my name.”

An amazing story with so much depth

This series is only getting better with each book. After Gavin and Eva got their happy end we now follow the story of Gavin's room- and teammate Cole.
Who finds himself stuck on Avery, his tutor, dream girl and, most important, his coach's daughter.
Cole is just a sweetheart who can't do wrong. A boy with a heart of gold and a golden Retriever energy. He is so determined to get behind the walls that Avery built around her to show her that he is the perfect man for her.
Avery had a rough and bad break up and therefore is currently living with her father, with whom she has a very difficult to non-existing relationship.
She can’t and won't get involved With one of her father's hockey players, no matter how sweet and perfect he seems to be.
But she didn't know how willing Cole was to prove himself to her.
You can totally relate to Avery and her hesitance but she melted anyway.
I fell for the character of Cole from the first page on. He simply was perfection.
The story was entertaining and had its secrets and a slightly mystery aspect, but it was fitting, well written and without too much drama.

A college sports romance where a country boy falls first for a city girl. Ice hockey star Cole Mathis is a cinnamon roll hero and the type of guy all parents dream that their daughter will bring home – kind, sweet, likes ducks, even he keeps an eye on his elderly neighbour – pretty much perfect in other words and for the bonus ball he’s got a dirty mouth. His one fault would be that he’s failing English, so his coach volunteers his daughter Avery as a tutor. Avery Dalton was a bit of a mystery. She’s fresh out of a relationship that had ended in the worst possible way and needing a fresh start had turned to her estranged father. I loved Cole who came across as a genuinely nice guy with no hidden sides while I took a bit longer to warm to Avery, but I did get the impression she wasn’t a girl you’d want to cross. She had trust issues and didn’t want a relationship with Cole or anyone but was happy with a ‘friends with benefits’ arrangement.

The overall story was strong with a touch of the forbidden about their secret romance as Avery slowly fell for Cole – he on the other hand jumped straight in with both feet, knowing that she was it for him, you’ve got to love a hero who makes up his mind straight away but their relationship development was fantastic as her feelings of friendship for him gradually deepened into love. Their banter was rapid fire and delicious and I loved their texting and to add some excitement to the proceedings there was the subplot of Avery being semi-stalked. Definitely a series I’m interested in reading more from.

I love Cole Mathis! Already had a soft spot for him after reading Ice Cold Player, but now wow he can really get a girl hot and bothered.

Cole is a complete golden retriever, hockey god and sweet country boy who doesn’t do hook ups and apparently does no wrong. That is until he meets Avery and all he wants is her in any way he can get her, and he is willing to let his dark side out to get it!

Avery is a very feisty fmc, but due to issues in a past relationship she is very closed off and believes that all guys are the same, that there are no good ones left. She sets her sights on the golden boy hockey player to prove he isn’t as good as he makes out, but what she discovers has her questioning her choices and her walls start to break.

They have instant chemistry which Avery tries to fight and ultimately hide behind her carefully constructed walls. Cole on the other hand is all in and will take whatever pieces of her she is willing to give him, until he slowly starts to help break into her heart. They were very cute together and I loved the character development they went on together, especially Avery.

The spice was really good and not what you would be expecting from Cole, but man does he have a dirty mouth!

Really enjoyed seeing all the other side characters from the previous book, plus Gavin and Eva making appearances. Henry the duck was amazing once again!

Can’t wait for book 3 and to see more of these hockey boys!

✨ Dive into the ice-cold passion and heartwarming romance of Cole and Avery’s story! ✨

Get ready to melt your heart with Ice Cold Heart, the second book in Nikki Hall's Beyond the Ice series. Cole Mathis is not just a star hockey player at Teagan University—he’s a golden retriever friend, a charming country boy, and even a duck-sitter extraordinaire! But there’s one thing he can’t get out of his head: Avery Dalton, his coach's cynical daughter.

Avery, with her sharp wit and no-nonsense attitude, is the complete opposite of Cole’s sunny disposition. Yet, when Cole needs help passing his English class, Avery becomes his unlikely tutor. The forced proximity and Cole's endearing persistence bring them closer, and sparks fly in this delightful college hockey romance.

Nikki Hall brilliantly captures the dynamic between the golden boy and the coach’s daughter, blending humor, heat, and heartfelt moments. Cole’s country charm and Avery’s tough exterior create a perfect balance, making their story irresistible.

Fans of the first book will love this new installment, but Ice Cold Heart can also be enjoyed as a standalone. Whether you’re into hockey, college romance, or just a well-written love story with plenty of heat, this book has it all.

ICE COLD HEART by Nikki Hall

You guys we are on book two of this great series. This is all about Cole Mathis. You are going to love Mr. Heart of Gold himself. I mean who wouldn’t love Cole. He’s not only the Star hockey player but he also genuinely likes to help the elderly and will help everyone he can. Then we have Miss. Darkness herself who is the total opposite of Cole. She is the grumpy to his sunshine. I mean with what her mom and Scott do to her it is understandable why she has such a jaded outlook on love and life and why she doesn’t want to open up to any one new. When she is ready to be away from her manipulative ex and mother she reaches out to her father whom she is distant with for help . With the help of her dad who happens to be the hockey coach she moves to Teagan University where she meets Mr sunshine. I loved the instant attraction that Cole and Avery feel but with what she went through with her ex she put a stop to it right away. However Cole does not give up sure it takes Cole some time to break her walls down but when he does it is explosive. It is not easy but Cole is able to show her that he is not like her ex and he is the best man for her and together they are phenomenal. Loved this book so much I really hated Scott and her mother I mean they are some real POS. You must read this book it’s so good and I just know you will enjoy it. Highly recommend.

I just finished reading Ice Cold Heart and I pretty loved it. I have read almost all Nikki Hall's books. I can't say this one is my favorite, but I enjoyed it. The plot is interesting, even if the whole story with Scott seems a little too surreal.

Cole : I really loooove Cole. He is the most comprehensive man alive. Avery is running and pushing him away, but he always gives her space and time. I really like the fact that he also shows some weaknesses. Usually book boyfriends are always perfect. Rich, handsome, elite atletes and first in all their classes. I really like that Cole is human, with strenth and weakness.

Avery : she is nice, but I did find her a little bit too "complicated". She wanted a no strings attached relationship, but wasn't able to dive into it for a while. I took me few chapters to finally connect with her. I would have love to see more of the daugther-father relationship with her dad.

I missed seeing the bossy Eva around. She was not there as much as I tought.

I know that Henry is a recurrent "character" from Wild Card and Beyond the ice series, but I think that the plot was a little too much around her, even tho her presence is refreshing.

The table has been made for Reece. I can't wait to read his story. And what about Mase??? This guy is a real mystery. I really hope I can get small pieces of the puzzle into the next book!

Okay...where do a find a Cole? I really enjoyed Cole, Avery, and the humor in this story. Thank you, Nikki and Grey's Promo for sending me this ARC.

Cole is a national treasure. He's on the college hockey team, he's a super sweet country boy who just wants to take care of everyone. He falls head over heels for Avery the moment he sees her. He has to spend quite a bit of time trying to get Avery to give him a chance and let him date her. And he babysits his duck roommate. Come on!

Avery has had a rough background living with her mom and going through her parents' divorce. She's not interested in dating, and she's running from her past, transfers schools, and comes to live with her dad. Who is the hockey coach. He's got one of his big players that needs an English tutor and she begrudgingly does it. Except not on her dad's terms. She and Cole make their own deal. She's gunna be his tutor with benefits.

I loved the relationship these two develop. I also love how much Cole talks to Avery's dad and helps Avery and her dad build their relationship back up. There's quite a bit of excitement that happens throughout the story, especially at the end. This was a great college hockey romance.

Nikki Hall's Ice-Cold Heart (Beyond the Ice Book 2) is a deeply emotional journey that delves into the complexities of its characters. It's a story of love, forgiveness, and second chances, all set against the backdrop of a sports team. The story revolves around Avery, the daughter of the Teagan U. Wildcats hockey coach, and Cole, a player on her dad's team. Despite her lingering resentment towards his apathy, Avery's decision to transfer from her previous college and move in with her dad sets the stage for a deeply emotional journey of discovery and healing. Cole needs help with an English class that requires heavy reading, and Avery's dad volunteers Avery to tutor him so he can qualify to play on the team. Avery and Cole have had previous encounters, and she agrees to go along with the plan only if Cole agrees to her tutoring terms to enlighten her in romantic delights.
This is a compelling narrative of love, forgiveness, and the power of second chances, all unfolding within the dynamic backdrop of a sports team. The Ice-Cold Heart (Beyond the Ice Book 2) series captivates and ignites enough passion to scorch your Kindles. Nikki Hall's masterful storytelling immerses readers into her Teagan U. world, and it's with a bittersweet feeling that one reluctantly departs when turning the book's final page.

I do love a hockey romance, and this one features prickly black cat/filthy mouthed golden retriever vibes. Avery has family trauma that's colored the way she sees all relationships, and Cole decides right away that it's Avery or no one, and he isn't into casual. This is the second installment of the Beyond the Ice series, and the chemistry between these two sizzles right off the page.
I appreciate the complexity of Avery's character. She's been through so much, and she's still going. She can come off as a PITA because life has taught her that even the people who are supposed to love you unconditionally will forsake you, and Cole has to use all his patience to try and break down her walls. He's the star left winger on the Teagan University hockey team, and Avery's soft place to fall. He's also a part time Henry sitter and a master of duck related puns.
The bit of suspense and intrigue in the 3rd act was something I didn't see coming, but it played out well enough to be the final push for everyone to lay their cards on the table and get really honest, really fast. Overall I enjoyed this book, my first read from this author, and would recommend it to fellow hockey romance fans. I plan to go back and read the first book in the series before the 3rd comes out. While I think Reese's story will be good, it's Mase I want to get to the bottom of...
