The Mysterious Marquess Next Door

Rate this book
From the moment I moved next door to the handsome, proud Marquess, I knew life would never be the same.

I long for quiet study, but fate intertwines my path with Matthew Whitman, the Marquess of Wexford, a man as enigmatic as he is aloof.

Our gardens become the battleground for our skirmishes, a war of roses and wits, where every glance is a challenge and every word a parry.

Yet, beneath our rivalry, an unexpected bond begins to form. His world of secrecy and service to the Crown draws me into a whirlwind of adventure.

Our late night rendezvous to thwart kidnappings and coups ignite a passion between us. As we face dangers together, I see the man behind the title—a man with a heart as noble as his cause.

Standing by his side, I envision a future filled with more than just books—a future of shared secrets, laughter, and love.

But would the noble Marquess marry a merchant’s daughter? Will the Ton’s gossip tear us apart? Will stolen kisses grow into true love?

For love is all that matters… if our love is true.

Not one of my favorites

I have to give credit for a well created
Plot and a well written story. I’m not exactly sure why I never seemed to get that feeling I was Part Of the story and these characters meant something to me. I finished the book but could very well have stopped after Five Or Six Chapters because honestly, I just really didn’t care how it ended. It was just not for me, but I gave it four stars For the plot and it was well written. Anxious to see someone else’s review. Happy reading, All!

Sweet Romance

I liked the story, although it took me a while to warm to Abby's character. At the beginning she is quite nosy and acts childish with her pranks towards Matthew, but her character develops well as the story progresses.
Matthew seems aloof and enigmatic, but that's because of his mission for the Crown.
I enjoyed their banter and how naturally their relationship evolved from enemies to lovers. I also liked the familial bonds and the interactions with the secondary characters.
As always, I enjoy the author's narrative style. The well-written plot is nice, with opposites attract, enemies to lovers, class differences and spy tropes, some twists and turns, a bit of intrigue and a touch of suspense.
It's a sweet and clean romance with love scenes behind closed doors in the marital bed.

Abby Sinclair is the daughter of a wealthy merchant whose family moves into a new house next to an enigmatic Marquess. Her family’s sudden success is somewhat overwhelming, and she has to get used to her new life in society.

She longs for adventure and when she finds out that her neighbor is a spy, she wants to make a contribution herself and asks him to let her help him.

Lord Matthew Whitman, the Marquess of Wexford, works as a spy for the Crown. He is impressed by his vexing, intelligent, somewhat nosy young neighbor who uncovered his secret and her enthusiasm, and he agrees to a partnership with her…

If you like sweet and easy to read regency romance novels with a touch of suspense and mystery, you will enjoy this book.

The Mysterious Marquess Next Door is a standalone historical romance by Kristina Earl. This was such a fun book, filled with action, mystery, suspense and a strangely sweet romance.

When a merchant and his family move into the estate next door to the Marquess of Wexford, everything changes. Matthew does not have marriage on his mind any time soon, though he needs an heir. As it is, he has a complicated life with his work for the Crown as a spy, operating within England.

Miss Abby Sinclair is intrigued by their new neighbour when she moves next door. She is a devoted daughter, a wonderful sister to her two younger siblings, the perfect young lady and something of a bluestocking. She also has a bit of an adventurous streak and that leads her to trying to figure out what is going on with her Marquess next door.

Abby and Matthew share the same adventurous spirit and sense of justice, but they are also opposites in many ways. Matthew is more reserved and cautious, while Abby is the opposite. I loved their contrasting nature. When Abby manages to join Matthew on his work assignment, if only because she also has a personal interest in the outcome, their differences prove that they make a wonderful team. But does spy work translate to romance?.

Extremely well written, full of love, drama, mystery, fun, suspense, action, intrigue, adventure, romance, society, twists and turns.Has lots of everything between Matthew and Abby to make this an exciting book. Matthew is a Marquess , who just had some new neighbors move in next to him. He is a spy for the crown and has been using their house to hide things in. Abby is the daughter of a shipping merchant , who has been doing business with some of the upper society. This has been bringing her and her family to some of their balls and parties. Abby just wants to have fun and some adventure before being put on the marriage mart. Once she finds Matthew doing some odd things she confronts him. Together they solve one mystery and discover they have feelings for each other. Has a fantastic storyine/plot, fabulous characters both bad and good. Once you start reading this book, it's very hard to put down. Has an epilogue to it that's has a happily ever after for them. Would strongly recommend to everyone.

Abby & Matthew
*
I yearn for a deeper connection, a union of hearts and paths.
*
Abby and her family moved to a new house. Her new neighbour comments on her garden and their tiny garden war begins. She catches him doing some shady stuff, so she sneaks in his garden to confront him and accidentally intercepts a message. The Marquess has no other option but to tell her the truth - he's a spy. Abby wants to make a difference in the world, no matter how small, before she has to marry, so she asks him to help him with spy stuff. She becomes the Fox to his Badger.
At first, I did not like Matthew. He was rude and full of himself. But then I saw glimpses of his kindness and knew this guy was going to be very affectionate. Which he turned out to be. In my opinion, he's the best husband ever. He checks in with her and reassures her. I loved that for her. Their love between them grows slowly over time.

Is a sweet enemies to lovers regency romance with a touch of mystery and suspense. With no cliffhanger.
Some of the lines I really liked --- "My, my, one really cannot tell a book by its cover. He looked so refined when he came here." ------ "Perhaps a chance to partake in an adventure uniquely my own." ----
"Before that happens, I want to do something that quenches the thirst for more inside of me. I want to do something for myself, to let myself know that I am more than I'm allowed to be. I know you can't be involved in something nefarious. I'm sure your cause, though secretive, must beto aid the community somehow. I want to be part of that. I want to do something grand and important before I have to marry someone and lose my freedom." ----
love was a plant that grew over time, nurtured by patience and understanding. ---
I loved reading Abby and Matthew's story and can't wait for her next book. I received a free ARC and this is my honest opinion.

Abby's family find themselves suddenly amongst the ton due to the success of her father's business. The adjustment s in their lifestyle and expected conduct is drastic, yet they are still looked down upon due to not having a title. Living next door to a Marquess who has no problem voicing his opinions doesn't help. Strange things start happening and since she's the oldest, Abby's going to solve the mystery... or find herself in a huge mess of a scandal if she gets caught.
These two complete opposites have met their match, they'll either fall in love or tear each other apart.

A novel with lots of suspense and mystery. Matthew, the Marquess of Wexford and Abby Sinclair stumbled upon each other while Matthew was involved in a clandestine activity. Together they try to make sense of mysterious happenings taking us on a journey of intrigue and suspense, while falling in love. This book is well-written with likable characters. I've read every book in this series and I have to say it was my least favorite. I couldn't get into the plot. It's a good book, just not to my taste.

Love doesn’t need a title
Even before the Sinclair family moves in, Abby clashes with her neighbour, the Marquess of Wexford, about an incident with her young brother. On his first visit two weeks later, he criticises their garden. After she intercepts a missive from a stranger, she discovers that the marquess actually is a spy for the Crown and proposes her help in uncovering a nefarious scheme against the Regent.
A love story between a lovely merchant daughter and a marquess with the added spice of spy activities to relieve the boredom of a young miss too smart for her own good.

This was a very exciting and entertaining story. The main characters were lovely. It was filled with much action, drama, intrigue, schemes, and plots, espionage, a kidnapping, a daring rescue, an attempted murder, and dangerous, unprecedentable secret missions for the Crown which jept me enthralled with anticipation until the end. I really enjoyed watching Matthew and Abbys' relationship grow throughout. Their romance and unconditional love they found was so beautiful. I highly recommend reading!

This is a clean romance with intrigue and witty banter. The heroine is a merchant’s daughter who just moved in next door to a marquess. She notices some suspicious activity and finds out he is a spy. As she wants adventure and to help others, she volunteers to aid him. As they work together their opposite personalities blend and they become a very effective team. Love blooms between these two from different social classes.

Banter to Uncover Secrets

Matthew and Abby initially clash as he is very secretive and she sees him doing some strange things. As his secret is revealed to her their connection deepens and she is happy to assist him anyway possible. Considering the time frame this story takes place her boldness is somewhat unexpected to Matthew but very refreshing. It was an enjoyable story of mystery, suspense and historical romance.

This is an uplifting story about integrity, strength of character, and honesty. At the beginning , my thoughts were, that Abby is a real pistol (the confrontation with the coachman). As I read this , I could easily
see her falling in line with Matthew and later his plans. She was a perfect fit for all of it. In fact , she was born for it. A good read about family, extended family, and loyalty, and love ever enduring to help us in good and bad times.

This was quite a story. Abby Sinclair is the daughter of a wealthy shipping merchant. she doesn't have a title but has a sizable dowry for the man who wins her hand. When she first moves to the their new estate, the next door neighbor is a bit of a jerk. Her new neighbor is the Matthew, the Marquess of Wexford. From the very beginning, they are a bit cranky towards each other but that soon changes when Abby intercepts a message intended for the Marquess. They have to work together to find a traitor.

There are wonderful characters in the story that make the story fun to read. There are spies, coup plots against the Crown and lots of swoony kisses. The story takes place over the period of a little over a year and is clean and without foul language or inappropriate or graphic sex scenes. There is also a happy ending.

I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.

This is a new author to me and I enjoyed her writing very much.
