The Significance of Curly Hair: A Loving Memoir of Life and Loss
Growing up, Gram was my best friend. We shared a double bed in my family’s cottage until I was nine. Fifteen years later, I got the call that she’d fallen and hit her head. All I could see was her mouthing, “Don’t you love me enough to come back home?” I wept on the plane as I began to write her story, the one she’d asked me to write in ninth grade.
Gram and I were polar opposites. She spent much of her life barefoot and pregnant. I was a gay, career-driven, independent decision-maker.
Searching through old relics, we found a time capsule in Gram’s drawer, revealing clues to her dark era, her 1957 breakdown. Dark green pills, a bank book, scribbles on an answers to unasked questions. She survived stress and abuse without things I take for income, a car, stocked pantry shelves. She did it all with unconditional love, never revealing her pain.
I’d spent my adult life avoiding becoming a “traditional” woman, but her death freed something in me. I realized the importance of child-rearing, understanding a woman like me can balance career and family. Love and support create happy, healthy kids. I could pass Gram’s spirit onto a child, braiding generations together from lifetime to lifetime.

What a beautiful story this is. You’ll read this one with a heavy, yet joyous, heart. This book is the creation of a promise made and the loss of a Gram. Deeply personal and equally as moving this is a one sitting read.
Kara’s Gram may have taught her a lot but she can also offer you something too. I loved this book and especially loved all of the photos. There are so many of them and I loved them all. They add a depth to this book that wouldn’t be possible without them.

If you are looking for a touching and very detailed look at a woman whose life was lived very well, this is the memoir you are looking for. a perfect blend of emotional moments mixed with uplifting memories.
There was so much I could relate about in this book as the author thinks back on her life with her best friend, her grandmother. Sad at times but worth it for all of the beautiful memories And wonderful writing. I can’t wait to read what this author writes next!

This was my first time reading a memoire, and I can assure you it’s not gonnq be my last. When I heard the word ”memoire” I’d assume it was gonna be about a famous person. To read about their lives and their amazing and incredible accomplishments. To get the exclusive behind the scenes access to their everyday life. But this is a story of a regular, normal, every day human. Who’s story might not have seen that remarkable to her when she lived her life, but to someone else reading it, it’s extraordinary.
It’s all the little things that we all experience, that doesn’t feel that significant, but that can mean the world to someone. That’s truly what it felt like reading this book. We got the author and the family members feelings and sadness over the loss of the matriarch of the family. This extremely important person in all of their lives, and the way she impacted them all. What grief does to us, how it can cripple but also how it can be a start of something new. How it can bring people back together, form new bonds and teach us to appriecate everything we take for granted.
Zajac’s story telling was incredible, so captivating and it really felt like a warm hug. Loved all the photographs included in the story, really made it come to life even more. So thankful that I’ve gotten to read this book, thank you.

Growing up, Gram was my best friend. We shared a double bed in my family's cottage until I was nine. Fifteen years later, I got the call that she'd fallen and hit her head. All I could see was her mouthing, "Don't you love me enough to come back home?" I wept on the plane as I began to write her story, the one she'd asked me to write in ninth grade.
Gram and I were polar opposites. She spent much of her life barefoot and pregnant. I was a gay, career-driven, independent decision-maker.
Searching through old relics, we found a time capsule in Gram's drawer, revealing clues to her dark era, her 1957 breakdown. Dark green pills, a bank book, scribbles on an envelope: answers to unasked questions. She survived stress and abuse without things I take for granted: income, a car, stocked pantry shelves. She did it all with unconditional love, never revealing her pain.
I'd spent my adult life avoiding becoming a "traditional" woman, but her death freed something in me. I realized the importance of child-rearing, understanding a woman like me can balance career and family. Love and support create happy, healthy kids. I could pass Gram's spirit onto a child, braiding generations together from lifetime to lifetime.

I am a huge fan of memoirs…and this book was a great one. All about Kara and her sweet connection to her grandmother, it tells the tale of familial love with her remembrances following the traffic loss of her grandmother.
Growing up, Kara considered her grandmother to be her best friend. In adulthood, though their lives were quite different, she still felt the tugging of connection bonding the two. One day, after receiving a call that her grandmother was going to die, she knew she had to honor her in the best way she knew how - by writing her story.

Having experienced flying in right after a family member has passed and how odd those days are when the remaining family members all come together to support each other and plan everything to be needed is, I could feel those emotions as Kara recounted her own experience.
While reading you can also feel the love Kara has for her grandma through the stories of moments when she spent time with her.
It was a beautiful story that shows just how much of an impact our loved ones have on our lives.
