Bethany Lee thrives on achievement and challenge. She’s attended a top tier medical school and chases that with a prestigious ER residency in her first choice New York hospital. Now she’s vying for another prize—a fellowship that will pay off her medical school debt and prove to everyone she has what it takes to win. It’s hers until she hits a wall. A very tall, dark and handsome infuriating wall.
Ethan Wu loves his new life in New York far from his controlling mother back in Taiwan. His residency in ER medicine is enjoyably challenging, inspiring him to explore remaining in New York permanently. On the advice of an immigration attorney, he applies for a fellowship. He’s a dream candidate, but one beautiful and irritatingly competitive candidate stands in his way.
Soon Bethany and Ethan compete on everything in and out of the ER, including cases, making dumplings and playing board games. They discover they make an unbeatable team. But with their future goals on the line, can they learn to fight for something beyond work—like love?
Lisa has been an avid romance reader and fan since she read her first Nora Roberts novel at the age of 13 after wandering the aisles of her local bookstore. Lisa loves that romance has the power to inspire, and believes that HEAs are for everyone.
Lisa writes light contemporary romantic comedies with a liberal dash of snark and banter. She enjoys delving into the complexity of Asian and immigrant family experiences, and celebrates female friendships in her trademark dry, witty style. As an Asian-American author writing own voices Asian American stories, Lisa hopes that her books will show the diversity of the Asian-American experience, and the importance of every reader being able to see themselves represented on the page.
Having grown up in Pennsylvania and helping out at her parents’ restaurant, Lisa has never bothered to learn to cook. She has two liberal arts undergraduate degrees and a J.D, and in her former life she was an intern, then Legislative Assistant for a PA State Representative. She also worked as a paralegal at a boutique law firm. Lisa is a politics junkie (don’t get her started on the wonder that is The West Wing!), indulges in naps whenever possible, and believes Netflixing in her pajamas and ordering take out qualifies as the perfect weekend.
Well, this series already had a second-chance romance, and a one-night stand to friends to lovers romance, so obviously we needed an enemies to lovers book. And I don't know if I got used to Lin's stories and her style, of if the book in this series got progressively better, but I really enjoyed this one. Solid 5 stars, despite the lack of spice compared to the previous books.
This one was about Bethany, Jeffrey's sister. She was a colorful supporting character in "The Year of Cecily", and now it is her time to shine. Bethany is a doctor, and she is a perfectionist. She works hard for two reasons; first, it is the Bethany way, and second, she knows that her parents sacrificed a lot when she was growing up, they had to work extra hard to send her to med school, so she feels like she owes them and wishes to pay them back.
Her plans will be wrecked by Ethan, though.
Ethan is also a doctor and also a perfectionist. It sound like Bethany and Ethan wouldn't be a good match, but they are able to relate to each other in a way that no one else can, so I suppose it works. First day at work, Ethan says something negative about Bethany's clothes, and she gets offended. She attacks him, saying that he is dressed up way over the top, and since then, they became nemesis as well as work rivals.
But the reality is that they keep each other on their toes. They make each other want to work more and be the better doctor.
When Bethany is dealing with a false pregnancy test and why the results were the way they were she asks Ethan for help. As they work together, she sees what a good doctor Ethan is, as well as a decent man. They grow closer, even Bethany's family meet Ethan and they really like the guy, but when both Ethan and Bethany apply to the same fellowship, they experience a brief break-up, until that is, Bethany gets her sh*t together and realizes that she is supposed to be happy for Ethan, not jealous or angry because she wasn't chosen for the fellowship.
I liked that Ethan helped Bethany be a better person. She was less self-centered, and more relaxed. In return, Bethany helped Ethan tell his mother that he will not be returning back to Taiwan, since he likes his life in the US, and it is where Bethany lives, and he has a life there.
I liked the family\friends\romance balance the best in this book. Bethany's bestie Jaya was one heck of a woman, and her little daughter Priyanka was downright adorable, as well as Ethan's biggest fan.
Bethany Meets Her Match is the third book in Lisa Lin’s series, From Sunset Park With Love. This book features Bethany Lee and Ethan Wu. The two are new residents and meet on the way to the ice breaker before they begin their jobs. Both initially judge the other for what they are wearing and how they act. The meeting does not go well and the two remain in constant competition against each other. Bethany has a standard she created that she uses in all aspects of her life, The Bethany Way.
Ethan is from Taiwan and is thinking of staying in NYC instead of returning home after his residency is finished. He speaks to his advisor and she suggests the best way to get permanent residency is through other family members, receiving awards at his job or getting married. As his only family is still in Taiwan and he’s not interested in a relationship, he opts for competing for an upcoming award in his field.
Bethany is American with lots of family. She has elected not to be in a relationship and focus on her work. She feels an obligation to her parents for their sacrifices they made when she was growing up. Like Ethan, she is also competing for the upcoming award. At work when she has a challenging case, she asks Ethan to consult as she recognizes his intelligence. The two start working together. They still compete on everything including who makes the best dumplings. They recognize there’s chemistry between the two and share an exceptional kiss. Bethany’s friends and family meet Ethan and all like him. What the future holds for them is uncertain.
I enjoyed the book and the series created by Lisa. The back and forth banter and competition between Bethany and Ethan was fun to read. Their enemies to lovers relationship was well written. It was enjoyable to see some of the characters from the previous books. Ms. Lin did an excellent job in educating the readers on customs of the Chinese culture. I recommend this story.
I was fortunate to receive an arc from Tule Publishing in exchange for my honest review.
💭This was an absolute delight! Ethan and Bethany have been at each other's throats since they first met at the hospital four years ago, and their rivalry is both hilarious and heartwarming. The story is so relatable, especially with its fantastic Asian representation. It dives deep into the complexities of family expectations and the pressures that come with being an immigrant, which really hits home for me. Plus, there's a bit of hospital drama where they figured out what the patient’s issues were. The whole vibe of the story feels like you're watching a Korean medical drama, so if you're a fan of those, you're in for a treat.
✅I laughed, I got a bit teary-eyed, and I couldn't stop listening. It's a fantastic blend of romance, humor, and cultural richness. Highly recommend!
I was lucky - and I do mean lucky - to read an ARC of Bethany Meets Her Match, a rivals-to-friends-to-lovers tale where opposites attract.
This book operates on two levels, as do its characters. At the surface is zingy, sizzling banter and a frequently hilarious game of one-upmanship as Bethany and Ethan try to outdo each other at everything from Guess Who to a major medical fellowship. They tell themselves it's all healthy competition...but that takes us to level two.
Unsurprisingly, there are eMoTiOnS brewing between these two. Deeper than that, though, are their individual, complex, and rooted reasons for striving, winning, and succeeding. They both have something to prove - or they think they do. The scene in which Bethany has a revelation about the real reasons for her ambition was particularly poignant, and likely to resonate with any reader who's ever taken a familial burden onto their shoulders silently and without being asked.
Bethany Meets Her Match was an A+ read, with lightning-fast dialogue that sparkles even more for being built on Big Feels, romantic and otherwise. I know this is the third in this series, so I hope we'll either get more characters in the Bethany/Cecily/Rachel universe or that they'll pop in for cameos in whatever Lisa Lin writes next. I know I'll be looking for them!
Bethany Meets Her Match (From Sunset Park, With Love Book 3) by Lisa Lin is a twenty-something story of finding balance in your life, maybe. This author knows how to write adults who are goal-oriented, driven, and intelligent. What they lack is having a life that has more than challenge and work. Bethany Lee and Ethan Wu are two such characters. Admirable in their goals and ability to achieve. I found these two competing against each other to be quite interesting.
Before long they are spending more time together, of course still challenging each other, not just for the fellowship but in everything. I wondered how long it would take them to see that they were better together than on their own. It did take a while but their eyes were opened to the possibility of love developing between them. Such a fun story makes me want to challenge my love one to a board game tonight.
Bethany Meets Her Match is an enemies to friends to lovers romance between two hospital residents Bethany and Ethan. Their competitiveness is brilliantly and at times humorously portrayed. Both being Asian there are cultural and family dynamics at play. I particularly enjoyed the "Asian Mothers" and the reminder that some aspects of life transcend our different upbringings. I loved this story from the first sentence to the satisfying conclusion and look forward to reading more of this authors books (perhaps after getting my hands on mooncakes to enjoy while reading). I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Ethan and Bethany have been competitive since their first meeting. They are both highly intelligent, confident, perfectionists, competing for the same fellowship but for different reasons. Bethany has more of a bulldozer personality assuming her way is the best way until she starts to see the value in collaboration with Ethan and shared cultures. But despite criticizing Ethan for his lack of heart and bedside manners, Bethany is the one who is so focused on her career goals that she pushes him away. Her family and neighbors are a riot and all the yummy sounding food made me hungry.
A great book . Ethan and Bethany are both doctors , Asian and just started working at the same hospital . At first they flirting but then she gets mad at him and the next 4 years they are rivals at everything . When they have to work together they discover they are a great team and they might fall for each other . Will Bethany have her Way or love will win ?.

Bethany Meets Her Match ~ From Sunset Park, With Love#3 by Lisa Lin
Blurb: She’s always felt unstoppable until him
Lisa Lin is a new author to me and Bethany Meets Her is written in such a way as to be credible and fun to read. All the characters blended well in the story to the extent that I wanted to read.

Another great addition to this series. I would say this is an opposites attract story line. You will fall in love with Ethan and Bethany. Their story will be hard to put down. It was a very entertaining read. It is filled with funny banter, that will have you laughing out loud. I would highly recommend not only this book but the whole series. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is Bethany and Ethan's story. They are very competitive and have to win. Ethan wants to stay in NYC, but he is from Taiwan. To stay he needs to win awards or get married. What will happen whe they both o for the same reward? Will it stop them from being friends? They connect in for ways than work, but will it lead to more?.

Bethany and Ethan’s enemies to lovers story was sooo good! I loved these two characters and the way their differences complimented each other. The fierce rivalry and their chemistry with added in hilarious banter and moments of love, friendship and family drama make this a fabulous story and one I couldn’t put down!
Wonderful characters to follow along as they compete against each other to be the best. They also try to fight the attraction they feel for each other. Like the setting and location of the story. There are several twists in the story. Good read.

A great read, an enemies to lovers story. Bethany and Ethan are both doctors at the same hospital and same department. They clash from almost the first meeting. I liked how it was told from both points of view.

Competitive and often surly, Bethany does meet her match in Ethan. They get off on the wrong foot at first meet. Unless there is some clearing of the air, their competitiveness will overrule any chance of the simmering romance. Cute story. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Overall this was a good read. At times the book was hard to put down. However, some parts dragged a little bit. I loved the medical scenes. I got an arc copy from book sirens, but my opinion is unbiased
Bethany meets her match by Lisa Lin Story starts out with Dr. Beth and she's meeting together with all the others that graduated and will be starting work. She also meets Dr. Ethan who she's taken with. Dr. Ethan mothers in China wants to come take care of him. Ethan wants to be himself as he will be working many hours a day still. He doesn't want to mislead her but she wants grandbabies... Love the challenges they put upon each other. Love how they also work as a team. Great read. Received this review copy from the publisher and this is my honest opinion.
Leuker dan verwacht! Drama viel mee en het was goed geschreven ondanks dat het 3de persoon was. Er zaten grappige stukjes in en ik heb er wel van genoten
Bethany is competitive and sometimes a little prickly. I love her. Anyone who's ever worked themselves half to death in order to prove their worth only to realize they've been worthy all along is going to relate to Bethany.
And Ethan? He's buttoned-up, but he's also kind. He's just the guy for Bethany--and she's just the woman for him since she'll spice things up with her competitive spirit.
Families, food, enemies to lovers, witty dialogue, and mothers who could medal in guilt trips if it were an Olympic sport...that's what you'll find in Bethany Meets Her Match.
