VICTORIA “V. E.” SCHWAB is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of more than twenty books, including the acclaimed Shades universe, the Villains series, the City of Ghosts series, Gallant, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and The Fragile Threads of Power. When not haunting Paris streets or trudging up English hillsides, she can be found in Edinburgh, Scotland, tucked in the corner of a coffee shop, dreaming up monsters.
After Addie, I swore I’d never put so much of my actual self into a book, and then I went and did this. Stripped down to my heart and bones and built a novel out of it. Everything I loved and everything I wanted and everything I feared.
It’s hard to process that one day some of you will read it too.
I’d normally never give my own work stars, but given what it took to get down onto paper, I’m making an exception.
1. the short title is BOBITMS. 2. the second B stands for Bones. 3. We have a snippet that goes "Bury my bones in the midnight soil, plant them shallow and water them deep, and in my place will grow a feral rose, soft red petals hiding sharp white teeth." 4. And if we put two and two together that first line from the poem is our title. 5. bones, roses, red petals, sharp white teeth = vampires
this better remind me of victoria schwab the author who wrote vicious instead of victoria schwab the author who wrote whatever the fuck addie larue was
Prereview May 2023 I saw V.E. Schwab on her tour for the Addie LaRue paperback and she talked about this there and it sounds like we are in for a TREAT, she said Addie is the more optimistic of the two books and that part of the inspiration behind this is that she wanted an evil lesbian character but didn't want to fall into the 'the one gay is the villain' trope and so solved it by making everyone evil and gay. It's also somewhat inspired by Florence + the Machine's music.
there is much i want to say about BURY OUR BONES IN THE MIDNIGHT SOIL, but precious little i want to give away so early, except for this: it is my favorite standalone v.e. schwab book, without question.
if THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF ADDIE LARUE was a guiding candle lit upon the wick of schwab's vulnerabilities, hopes, and wishes, BURY OUR BONES IN THE MIDNIGHT SOIL is a roaring bonfire into which schwab threw her entire being—heart, blood, bones, and all. long described as her toxic lesbian vampire novel, her ode to florence + the machine, and an homage to the work of anne rice, BURY OUR BONES IN THE MIDNIGHT SOIL is a gorgeous, blood-stained story of ravenous hunger, vicious love, and what it means to be free at the cost of your own humanity. in terms of schwab's work, it lives at the delicious intersection of THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF ADDIE LARUE and VICIOUS—an indulgent and violent history of immortality and otherness that only schwab could write, and it is everything i could've asked for.
i can't wait for this book to land in the world—signed and full of love and ready to bite—but most of all, i can't wait for you to meet the three women at its heart. if you haven't preordered it already, i'd highly encourage it. this is one you can't afford to miss.
BURY OUR BONES IN THE MIDNIGHT SOIL is out on june 10th, 2025. 🌹
New update: just find out that it will be a LESBIAN VAMPIRE story. Okay I AM sold now. Ca’mon you cannot spoil a sapphic vampire story. I mean just don’t put any man into this OK?? I didn’t really like any Victoria Schvab books ( vicious, invisible life of Addie Laurie, a darker shades of magic) But who knows maybe this one can be good?
I would've read this even if it was about.. I don't know a dry teabag wanting to be made into a nice cup of tea but oh am I here for toxic lesbian vampires!!!!!!
