Kings of Fury #1

The Wrong Bride

Rate this book
Vacationing in Scotland, schoolteacher Elizabeth “Elle” Darcy anticipates picturesque landscapes, castles of old and kilt-wearing charmers, not awakening in someone else's body. Worse, that someone just married enigmatic billionaire Callen Bruce. Though that’s not the biggest problem. To the rest of the world, her new “husband” runs an elite empire. But behind his public persona, he’s a king of berserkers locked in an ancient, supernatural war with wolf-shifters.

Determined to reclaim her normal life, Elle will do anything necessary to switch back with Callen’s real wife. First, she must ditch the disciplined warrior. An impossibility when he refuses to relinquish the bride chosen for him by fate, even though he despises her. Or does he? The growing heat in his eyes says otherwise. Not that it matters. There’s no way this temporary queen will fall for the moody, broody secretive warrior who belongs to another woman. Nope. Not Elle. Not ever. Probably.

What do you do when a vacation of a lifetime turns into an utter nightmare? An innocent life switched and thrust into an unknown world. Left with no other choice, Elle must conform and play the part if she has any chance for survival or getting her old life back...

What a wild, wild ride. The Wrong Bride was filled with so many love/hate moments as the story began to unravel. Not knowing who you could really trust or what would happen when the truth came out. At one point, it felt like the hits would never stop coming, and I had no clue how Elle would get out of this predicament.

Right off the bat, I knew Callen and Elle were going to be a force to be reckoned with. Their story utterly complex, yet entertaining, and filled with the most delicious angst. The angst was out of control and utterly consuming, leaving my emotions at war with themselves.

The stakes had never been higher, and only time would tell if truth and love would overcome the obstacles set before Elle and Callen.

One thing I say for certain is that The Wrong Bride certainly kept me on my toes. I couldn't and didn't want to put this book down. This book has great world building and character development. The paranormal aspects intrigued me, while the chemistry and banter left me salivating for more.

I know it may not seem like it, but my thoughts are a jumbled mess in the best possible way. All I can say is I absolutely loved this book and can not wait to read more from this duo.

There was a lot I liked about this story but what I didn’t like was the hero and his exes. He made it hard to rate this book higher. I liked the heroine a lot and wanted a better romance than what he gifted.

September 30, 2024 - before reading

I haven’t read a Gena Showalter book since 2017 since the whole Gilly/William betrayal in her Lords of the Underworld series.
Yup. I felt it so strongly that I went from inhaling her books to going cold turkey when it was confirmed Gilly and William were never going to happen.

7 years, a pandemic and a reading slump later, I’m going to give this book a try. Guess it shows how badly my trust was broken. Let’s hope it doesn’t happen again with this series 🤞.

⏩️After reading: no smut!?
2.5/5

Well, that was disappointing. I don’t like single-parent tropes. Soon as I found out Callen was a dad, immediately my interest waned by about 60%. But Elizabeth was interesting and funny. So I continued.
The whole body switching premise was cool. Gave me Fate & Flame by K.A. Tucker vibes. Until it wasn’t because it became overly complicated and convoluted. And
‼️Spoiler: ‼️

The mother of his child, Sorcha, isn’t dead. Turns out she’s one of two villains in the book.
What really bothered me was that Callen knew he was going to marry Isobel despite her betrayal. He was even briefly engaged to her (before the betrayal)! He still started a relationship with another woman, lived with her and had a kid with no intention of ever marrying her. Forget my dislike for single-parent tropes, this is a pretty shitty thing to do, regardless of whether the character is an MC or not. And idk maybe because he lived with her, I kept imaging them together in HIS BED 🤮🤮
Like, that’s probably where his kid was conceived 🤮🤮

I absolutely despise crazy-ex girlfriend tropes. It’s demeaning, as if a man is the main reason a woman would become a villain. 🙄

Finally, if you’re expecting smut. Don’t. There wasn’t any. Only kissing. Which was a huge disappointment. Lust with ZERO payoff.

This was such a fun and unique book, and i had so much fun while reading it!!! I just wish that it didn't end as quickly as it did!

The premise i found to be really interesting. I don't think i've heard of, or read many body/soul swap books before, and even less that have it all take place because of an arranged marriage that one party wants to get out of. There's a lot more to it plot wise that we find out near the end, and so many twists and turns that i really didn't see coming at all. Finding out how everyone was connected and the real reason for the body swap taking place in the first place was THE MOST INTERESTING AND SHOCKING PART. I honestly didn't see it coming at all and made reading this even more enjoyable than i first thought.

The chemistry between the two main characters was basically non-existent at the beginning (which makes sense considering the body swap) and even more so because the mmc has hella bad blood with who he thinks is his new wife, like he cannot stand her, hates her and everything that she is because of what she's put him through in the past.
I can hear you thinking, why would he agree to marry someone who he detests? FREAKING FATED MATES!!!! or in this case something called a Firebrand, which is basically the same thing in this universe.
Obviously, chemistry slowly unfolds between the two of them and they start to fall in love (as they should). There's a lot more to this one plot wise than just a fated mates romance with body swapping and an arranged marriage. There's a lot that all of the characters have to work through and agree on, and LOTS of miscommunication/backstabbing and plotting before they get to their happily ever after, but it was so worth it!

I cannot wait to see where Gena decides to take the rest of the series, cannot wait to meet more characters and even more so, i can't wait to see if the characters in this book will reappear later on.

One thing about me is I LOVE Gena Showalter’s writing. I had yet to read a book written by both Jill & Gena, and this did not disappoint! It’s not often I pick up a book with a FMC as witty and silly as as Elle, but it felt so natural and made it so easy to binge this book as it almost somehow gave the story a lighthearted feeling despite the very serious plot going on. The pacing was just perfect and kept me invested throughout the entire story. And the plot twist was genuinely so unexpected I had to reread it to fully comprehend what happened. I thoroughly enjoyed The Wrong Bride and I can’t wait to read the other books in this series!

Thank you so much to the authors for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

The Wrong Bride is the first in the new Kings of Fury series. We follow Elle Darcy, a teacher from Oklahoma, who is vacationing in Scotland. While there, she has a strange encounter with a woman named Isobel, who asks her all about her life. Then through a very strange series of magical events, Elle ends up switching bodies with Isobel, and that’s not all.. Elle realizes she’s just gotten married to Callen Bruce, a berserker.

This plot was a little all over the place for me! I did enjoy how fast paced it was, and Callen was very swoon worthy. Elle was giving me a little whiplash with her back and forth introspection. I think there was a little too much inner dialogue. Overall, it was a very entertaining read!

Thank you to the authors and the publisher for an e-arc in exchange for my honest review.

I was so excited that Gena Showalter and Jill Monroe were teaming up to write a Paranormal Romance series together, and I couldn't wait to dive into The Wrong Bride. If there is one thing you should know about me, I'm going to gobble up Paranormal Romance books, especially if Gena and Jill write them.

If you loved the movie Freaky Friday, you'll definitely like The Wrong Bride, especially with its paranormal twist and how it's set in Scotland. The main character, Elizabeth Darcy, is supposed to be traveling back home from her vacation in Scotland, but she finds herself stuck in another woman's body named Isobel Cambell, whom she switched with unknowingly. Not only is she, not Elizabeth anymore, but she's married to a broody, grumpy berserker who loves trying to tell her what to do. She tries everything to convince her new husband that she's not his wife, but he refuses to listen to her, and it's up to Elizabeth to find a way back to her original body before the woman who switched her ruins her life at home. In the meantime, though, Elizabeth finds it hard to resist her new husband, Callen Bruce, especially when she finds out that he's not always broody and grumpy, and he reminds her so much of an alpha hero from one of the many romance books she reads. =)

First off, I love alpha heroes in my romance books, and Callen Bruce definitely was one of those heroes. He could be overbearing at times and had a horrible temper for being a berserker, but he had a soft and protective side, especially when you get to know him more. I understood why Elizabeth described him as the ultimate romance book hero whenever she was around him.

I loved Elizabeth Darcy and how she handled the switcheroo of bodies. She even got everyone at the castle to like her version of Isobel because the real Isobel was not a kind person. Even Callen noticed a change in his wife, but he didn't believe it was due to the switched bodies. I loved the moment he realized he fell for 'Elizabeth' because he realized she brought out the best in him.

This book was full of twists and turns, especially at the end, and I couldn't put it down after I started it. This was a great start to Gena and Jill's new series, and I give it five stars. I wish I could give it more. It had me laughing and smiling the whole time I was reading, and I can't wait to read more books from this new series. Please give me more berserkers, like Callen, and female characters like Elizabeth, who know how to handle them. =)

Single/Dual POV: Single POV (Heroine's POV only)

Standalone or Part of Series: It's the first book in the Kings of Fury series.

Would I recommend this book? Yes. If you are looking for a Paranormal Romance with Freaky Friday vibes, then this book should be added to your reading list.

What to Expect:
💙Slow Burn Romance
💙Fated Mates
💙Forbidden Love
💙Marriage of Convenience
💙Secret Identity
💙Brooding Berserker
💙Ruthless King

I finished this book before I even had a chance to post the Currently Reading graphic.  I got notification the ARC had been sent to my Kindle and I immediately picked it up and started reading, and I devoured it in 4 hours.

The Wrong Bride is the first book in a new paranormal romance series, Kings of Fury.

This book gave me Freaky Friday vibes and I loved it.  It is the first book I have read that involved body/soul swapping.

Elizabeth (Elle) Darcy has been enjoying a trip to Scotland that she has planned and saved for.

On the day she is due to return to her home in Oklahoma, she meets Isobel Campbell.  Isobel starts asking questions and after getting answers tells Elle she will do nicely.

The next thing she knows, she wakes up in Isobel's body, and is married to Callen Bruce, a Berserker.

Elle has to try and figure out how to get back to her own body while learning everything about the new reality she is living in.  A reality where Berserker's and Shifters are real.

She finds out Shifters are Berserkers who have essentially gone bad when they give in to their rage.  Each Berserker has a Firebrand, a mate that keeps their inner beast and rage under control.  Isobel/Elle is Callen' Firebrand

She also finds out about Soul Switching and what happens to the people involved, which means she can't tell Callen the truth.

Can Elle escape the Soul Switch?  Will she keep her heart intact or will she lose it to the man who is doing everything to protect her from the people who are determined to take her from him.

What I also loved about this is the little references to the cozy mystery series these authors have wrote together, the Jane Ladling Mystery.

I can't wait to read the next book in the Kings of Fury series.

If you've ever dreamed of waking up in someone else's life, complete with a sexy, protective Berserker king by your side, well, I have news for you. Elizabeth Darcy did it, and she has some pros and cons.

Pros:
•Unexpected, extended vacation
•No more pet allergies
•Your new husband will buy you as many pairs of comfy leggings and sweatpants as you want.

Cons:
•No one trusts you, including your new husband
•You're stuck in a foreign country away from your family
•It's 100% your responsibility to make sure your husband doesn't go into a berserker rage and 💀 people. No pressure.

The Wrong Bride was such a good read. Showalter and Monroe hit it out of the park with this first book in their Kings of Fury series. Elizabeth and Callen had amazing chemistry, and I truly loved the whole lore that was given to this series. Callen and Elizabeth were a fun ride from start to finish, and this book only made me that much more excited for the rest of the series.

As with all their previous collaborations, these two authors crafted a story that was not only well done in terms of the plot and character development, but also well done regarding the writing itself. It's so easy to pick up and get lost in the story Showalter and Monroe wrote. From start to finish, I absolutely loved Elizabeth and was, at times, both jealous and empathetic of Elle and the situation she found herself in. But it wasn't just Elle who ended up being a fully realized character. Everyone in this story, including the characters we aren't supposed to care for, were multi-faceted and intriguing in their own way.

If you love your paranormal ripe with a bit of magic and your alpha male complete with a sexy accent, then you cannot pass up The Wrong Bride.

Oh, and definitely keeps an eye out for a few Jane Ladling references along the way....

Whaaa I really loved that story, the idea was just awesome, I love a good switch of bodies and the plot was well-designed and funny and surprising.

After realising her dream to visit Scotland, Elizabeth would have never thought that she would end up stuck in the body of a woman who is literally hated by all and married to a handsome billionaire who doesn’t care at all about her, hates her, dismisses her. Driven into a world with immortal berserkers with anger issues, Elle must learn how to survive, control her newfound husband, and find a way to get back her body.

The interactions between Elle and Caleb are just priceless, I loved how she’s breaking him down with her personality, he was definitely not ready for someone like her. Especially after the mess, Isobel left behind and the use of a kind of forbidden spell to escape her situation.

I’m really excited about the other kings, I just wouldn’t have minded a little more spice even if the sexual tension is right there.

I received an ARC Copy of this book from the authors, this review is from my own thoughts 😍

When Elizabeth Darcy takes a trip to Scotland before the end of summer vacation, she never would have imagined what would happen. This story had everything I could want. It was a fun little hearted clean romance with action, supernatural beings and a female main character who always made me laugh. The authors were able to transport me inside a castle in Scotland and make me believe that berserkers are real. Callan was tall dark and a little broody. He gave off alpha energy from the first page. Elle was such a sweet girl who even when angry had a hard time being mean. The story had me turning page after page needing to know what would happen. The ending had me anxious for more from this world.

As a book of Gena Showalter, I was so disappointed in the lack of spices. The story itself was pretty good, the dialogue between characters was funny and good as well. If I had known that there was no spice, I would not have read this.

Elle just wanted to soak up the historic vibes during her holiday in Scotland. She did not expect to get her soul scrambled and wake up in another body. Especially not one that's about to get itself betrothed to a Berserker Shifter!

Callen and Elle were Love/Hate from the get-go and the sparks from them were great. They had great Hepburn/Tracy vibes. Elle really had to roll with the punches, she was completely out of her element/time period and it was really sink or swim.

This world really sucked me in and I loved the little references to the Jane Ladling mysteries (another series I love by these authors). I am now on tenterhooks to see what happens with this dynamic duo next!

Gena and Jill write a seamless story, I would have no idea that more than one person wrote this.
I loved the characters Elle and Callen have some explosive chemistry, and I love that every time she says no to him, or throws him some extra sass his feelings for her grow.

I loved the setting, and some of the twists were pretty surprising. I loved this from page one and was on the edge of my seat loving the romance and just waiting for them to FINALLY declare their feelings. I also love the reference to the other series Jill and Gena write together!!
I can't wait for the next book!
Ellie is visiting Scotland and it's almost time for her to fly home when she meets a strange woman who isn't making a lot of sense in the questions she asks.
Then, the next thing she knows she is waking up in a room that's not hers, in a body that's not hers.. but does look strangely familiar, and finds out she is married to a man who seems to hate her guts, well the her whose body she is currently residing in.

It's a good thing Elle is fully prepared to win him over.. while trying to escape... but if only he wasn't so gorgeous, and turns out he has a marshmallow center especially when it comes to his daughter..
What's a girl to do but make the best of a weird situation.. and maybe fall in love in the angry hot guy who makes her melt?

The Wrong Bride by Gena Showalter and Jill Monroe is the first book in a brand new paranormal romance by two best friends and authors ❣️ This modern cozy paranormal romance is a wonderful start to a brand new series that will hopefully last for many many books. We have new Lore involving berserker, shifters and soul swapping that I've never read in a book before and am excited to learn more about this world and all the characters involved.

Elle is a sweet loveable yet feisty woman who wakes up in the body of a horrible woman that everyone despises and to make matters worse she's hitched to a being she never knew existed in the real world and he doesn't believe a word she says. How's a girl supposed to get her body and life back when not even her husband believes let alone likes her and speaking of her predicament could cost her her head? Very very carefully and with a bit of wooing on her part.

Callen has every right to hate his new wife, who can blame him after all she's done, yet she seems to have changed overnight and he's not sure if he can trust her, okay he knows he can't, but is he starting to fall for it regardless? He's not the king of berserkers for no reason but he may not have what it takes to deny his growing attraction to his new and seemingly improved wife 😉

3 where the smut stars😑🙃

I loved the heroine very much, the way she spoke, her strength, and her boldness. I hated the absence of the hero’s voice. For heaven’s sake, where is he?! The story is well constructed, but it moves slowly or perhaps needs more space and more pages. And what are these kisses?! Is this just what I get from an immortal Highlander and a Scottish hero I've been dreaming of since my teens🥺

Do you know what Gena did with this novel? It gave us the joy of the road, but deprived us of the pleasure and happiness of arriving.🙄
Like any sadistic hero from those dark romantic novels, he caresses his lover but refuses to give her the ecstasy of love.
Damn, how much I wanted to move the heroes and events with my own hands so that I could achieve something that would satisfy the reader withen me, who has loved Gena’s writing since forever. I'm sorry, Gena, but you disappointed me. You showed me a delicious cake and forbade me from eating it..

What a great way to start a series.
Elizabeth is on vacation in Scotland. On her last day, she meets this beautiful woman, who chats her up.
The next thing she knows, is she is now in the beautiful woman's body, and has no idea how that happened.
A very growly man, claiming to be her husband, doesn't want to hear about soul swapping. He even threatens her with death.
Elizabeth does what she must to survive. She pretends to be who everyone thinks she is, but acts like herself.
Callen, can't help but to be drawn to this "new version" of his wife
I couldn't put this book down. The twists and turns had me breathless. I loved every moment of reading it.
Thank you to Gena Showalter for the advanced copy.

Waking up in a strange place is one thing. Waking up with someone else's face is a whole other thing entirely!!! Past and present collide in this crazier than fiction story.

Plan of action…kill them with kindness.

Elle is such a fun character and her wit comes in handy winning over the dark and dangerous Callen!

This book was just so much fun to read! It takes what you love about the Jane Ladling Mysteries and mixes in what you love about Lords of The Underworld! What a sweet, amazing, sexy mix indeed!

To sum it up in Elle’s own words: “Why be the villain in someone else’s story when I could be the plucky heroine of my own?”

This book is the first book in a new series and I’m totally here for it! There was some incredible world building with enemies to lovers and forced proximity (oh and fated mates thrown into the mix).

Our heroine is an American tourist minding her business when she gets body swapped into a woman who is freshly married to the Scottish king of the Beserkers (a la Freaky Friday).

This book was so much fun and I didn’t want it to end. I highly recommend it if you love paranormal romance but I will share that the spice level is very low.

The Wrong Bride may be a Freaky Friday-esque twist of a romance but my gosh did Showalter and Monroe make ME feel like I'm 16 again, reading what we used to call paranormal romance! Not only does TWB start off with a mystery woman asking some detailed questions of our FMC, Elle, but reader...you will be just as lost as Elle! We've got a little bit of steam, a little bit of action, and by gosh do we have a heck of a mystery. As Elle has to navigate A WHOLE NEW BODY, she also has to navigate the confusing new world of berserkers via her newfound HUSBAND?! I.E. the stunningly gorgeous Callen Bruce. It's quite the trip.

As Elle discovers new facets of her reality, while trying to convince others of the truth, we see her personality slowly crumble at Callen's walls. He's used to the ice princess that once inhabited Elle's new "body"; so when Elle's charming quirks are let out, well let's just say that love finds a way.

Don't be fooled though, not everything is as it seems; with forbidden rules and new laws in place, Elle and Callen have to battle more than just their confusing emotions; they have to battle the entire world as Berserkers know it. Twisty and fun, this is a new fantasy world I can't wait to get more of!

Berserkalicious!

Elizabeth is such a fun character. She's so relatable and awkward at times but smart. I laughed A LOT but also cried when things became serious.

Callen is stoic and gorgeous but he's a berserker which is kinda scary especially since his psycho fiance switched bodies with Elizabeth and now, Elizabeth is married to him in another woman's body.

What could go wrong?

This first book in a new series is amazing! Creative story, fast-paced. Wonderful slow burn romance. Personal bonus to me - the female MC had a weak spot for Gena's Jane Ladling series (even though it wasn't specifically named in the story, it was obvious from the description of the series) which I also adored, so fun and full of humor. Highly recommend this read.

First of all I prefer third person POV. I'm a person who likes to see the book like a movie, not like I'm experiencing the book. Hence, one star removed. However, this book had me hooked right from the start. It's an easy read and quite fun. I can't wait for the next one

Elizabeth "Elle" Darcy is having a wonderful time in Scotland. That is until she meets someone that does a switcheroo with her body. Callen is a paranormal berserker that needs the calming influence of his wife/special one.

The story follows these two actually falling for each other enough that when push comes to shove the truth comes out.

I can't wait to see where the authors go next!!

Yup, started reading as soon as it hit my Kindle and didn't stop until I turned the last page. It was fabulous! The characters, the mythology, the story, loved every moment. Loved it

Intriguingly unique story line. Elle and Callen are fated, but it is a bumpy ride to their HEA.
Well developed characters within vibrant world.
I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
Well worth my time and $$.
