Stay Angry, Little Girl

Rate this book
An empowering message inspired by a beloved quote from Madeleine L’Engle’s enduring classic A Wrinkle in Time.

“Stay angry, little Meg,” Mrs. Whatsit whispered. “You will need all your anger now.”

This picture book encourages girls everywhere to proudly share their ideas and emotions, even if those traits will be met with resistance. Because being brave, sensitive, stubborn, curious, loud, kind, and playful helps them build strength and stay true to themselves.

Michelle Jing Chan's bright artwork welcomes girls of all backgrounds to use these important affirmations.

Read this book for my toddler's bedtime. This book is inspired by a quote from the book called A Wrinkle in Time written by Madeleine L'Engle.

The story first advised to the little girl was to stay angry when the park informed it had been closed to make way for a new parking lot. "Anger helps you know what needs to change." The next advice was to stay sensitive because strengths can be found in tears and feelings. The next advice was to stay stubborn and defend one's beliefs. Another advice was to stay curious because "your questions will lead to big answers." This book has many good advices for kids, especially little girls. Great illustrations!

Thank you MacKidsBooks for the opportunity to read and review!

I want my daughter to live angrily, bravely.
I want my daughter to use her voice and to feel deeply
I want my daughter to have convictions and hold tight to them.
I want my daughter to be kind and welcoming, someone who truly represents Christianity.
I want my daughter to be so similar to the examples shown in this book.

So I read this one to Matthew (Maine Coon). He sat through and listened to the whole book in one sitting. I could see after I turned the last page that he really needed to think about what I just read to him.

He had this look like he was in shock that his Mama was not treated nicely because she was a girl. I think Social Justice Kitty was activated.

I honestly have never seen him think this hard about a book after we read it. If this book can make a male Maine Coon a Social Justice Kitty, just imagine what this will do to a human child.

Read this to your kids.

I’m dubious about the authorship credit here. There are more words than what is found in that simple L’Engle quote, and I am forced to wonder who composed them. Was it the artist? While I wholeheartedly approve of the message, I felt the book was kind of heavy-handed.

This book takes everything that misogynists pin on little girls as negative and shows how they are powerful traits that make us better people. As a woman who was told as a young child that she was too big, physically, emotionally, and vocally, I give this book a standing ovation because there are so many girls who are told not to be angry or kind or curious or loud or stubborn or… or… or… This book truly illustrates that these traits can be the superpower within us to be a better person or to make the world a better place. What makes the book even more powerful is the illustrations because they take very scarce text and show the how and why all while including characters that will connect with every reader.

This story is both inspiring and sad. It is inspiring that it gives girls permission to feel and be powerful enough to make changes for a better world. It saddened me that we need a book to remind our girls to do this. The world will tell girls that they should not get angry, but as this book so powerfully reminds us, our anger helps us see and make changes to the things that need to be changed. I felt this book deeply. Chan's illustrations were thought-provoking. I admire how the text was interpreted to be contemporary and inclusive. This would be a great book to have classroom discussions about. I highly recommend it.

This book is inspired by a quote found in one of my all time favorite books as a child, A Wrinkle in Time. It is a colorful and simple yet powerful message to little girls to stay as they are, just as loud, just as curious, playful, interested, and angry when they need to be. It is also an important message to little boys and all adults who may try to silence girls when they do not meet the expectations of those around them. The text is strikingly simple and sparse giving plenty of room for the colorful illustrations to complete the message of empowerment. An important addition to any library.

In a world where girls are often asked to be quiet and obedient, this beautiful, vividly illustrated book reminds them to stay angry, sensitive, stubborn, curious, loud, and more. Most importantly, the book encourages young girls to be themselves. Inspired by the words of Madeleine L'Engle, STAY ANGRY, LITTLE GIRL will help girls think about what is important to them, what their hopes and dreams are, and what they want to fight for. Highly recommend!

What a brilliant concept in its simplicity and use of bright colorful illustrations to give deeper meaning to Madeleine L’Engle’s “stay angry little girl” words— inspire girls to use their emotions to enact change! Girls can do anything they put their minds to and are awesome just the way they are born.

This book starts by showing how anger can be the start of taking action and making positive changes. It looks at other traits such as stay sensitive, stay curious, stay loud, etc. It is an inspiring and empowering book for young girls to remind them how they have a voice and can take an active part in implementing changes that they believe in.

Ooooh this is so so good! I wish it was a few pages longer, but it’s very well done. Must read any time, but for educators & librarians, or families would be perfect on International Day of the Girl Child.

When showing ANGER is necessary to stand up for yourself. Empowerment when injustice is present.
