He is determined to make a fresh start with his brothers in the far West, the new state of Kentucky. Newly widowed on the Wilderness Trail, Catherine Adams' only fear was living without love. Forgive my choppy review, I am writing this fast before I leave for work...I just need to get down all my thoughts before I forget them. I may revise later to smooth it out.

The high ratings I am sure are from the Christian readers. This books is overrated. But overall pretty good considering. Especially if your looking for a nice slow and easy read.

I have been reading this series completely out of order, and it really doesn't matter too much, but I suppose reading them in order would give one a bit more backround on the characters, but I truly feel it not necessary.

The story could have been alot better if there were not some holes in the hero's character (which I will get into) and if it weren't so "Godly." I did like the history and the romance was slow and natural but a bit rushed at the end, tying up all within the last chapter.

I felt more than a little annoyed at Native Americans being the "bad guys." "Savages." But I suppose back then, that is the way people viewed them, misguided as it were.

I also felt that there seemed to be a constant justification for the Christian characters in the book for killing. I mean, if theres a bad guy who is attacking you, you defend yourself. Kill him or it will be you who dies. Why does the character need to find biblical permission to do so? I suppose because this is a "Christian" read. Plus, since the hero is a war veteran, how was he constantly searching for bible verses to justifying his killing then too? Doesn't make sense.

The fight scenes were too long, and unrealistic. It almost seemed as if they were fighting in slow motion. I found it difficult to grasp how people with severe wounds were able to still be able to stand up and fight. And the matter of the horses coming to the rescue was also a bit far fetched IMHO.

Although I really like the hero, I felt there was some elements missing, and also contadictory.

As I was reading, I was happily excited to see and lead to believe the hero was a virgin. All signs pointed in that direction. His story goes like this:

He had fallen in love when he was young, he only ever held her hand. Before he could ask her to marry him, she died in a fire in her fathers general store. Burned down by a rebel traitor. The hero swears he will never love another, never forget her, and vows revenge. Swearing to find the traitor and kill him, he uses all of his money that he saved for his wedding, to buy a blade. He fashions a handle for it made of deer horn (to remind him of her doe like eyes) and begins his journey to Kentucky, running from his past and also in search of the traitor.

Upon the way he meets widow Catherine who starts to break down the barrier around his heart. Catherine, of course, never loved her husband, and never felt passion or satisfied in the marriage bed...... Why is that always the way of it in romances? The women are either innocent or experienced but unsatisfied. A bit unfair and unrealistic and very arrgravating. Anyway. Back to the hero.

He was said to have "sworn off women" after his one and only love died. Ok understandable and logical when it was also said, when he places his hands on Catherines shoulders, how he never toched a woman like this. My mind's now going.. definately Virgin. Right? So it became confusing to me when they share their first kiss, how he remembers how he stole kisses from women from time to time before. Without putting his hand on their shoulder? Hahahaha. Were they pecks on the cheeck from a distance?

Right, so after all the constant back and fourth of him fighting his feeling for Catherine (which becomes a bit tiresome), and realizes he loves her (this happens near the end when he thinks she is going to die, another common ploy in romance) he asks her to marry him. It is then said that he had bedded a couple of women, but never kissed them or touched them, just did the deed and felt guilty and shamed afterwards. What happened to swearing off women? It was as if the author just remembered that she needed to have the man with experience, like she did before their first kiss. I don't see why this was necessary, since Catherine was a widow and experienced herself. AND how do you have sex with a woman without touching her shoulders? Tricky I would guess. Apparently he had stolen more than a few kisses off women. Another thing, he also said he wouldn't bed Catherine before marraige because he was honorable and if he bed a woman he would have to marry her... So what about those couple of women he had before?

The author should have just made him a virgin, and maybe was going to. I susupect that some genius of an editor told her to make him a little experienced. It seemed that way because it appeared that these afterthoughts of experience were inserted without thought to what was already established.

Making him a virgin just made more sense. Unfortunately the author sacrificed character continuity and logic to appease someone.

Overall I did like the hero, he was not a manwhore, and not a braggart in any way. I did feel his refusal to forget the past for so long made the romance with Catherine suffer. It was difficult to swallow how he was hanging on to a dead woman he clearly didn't know very well or very long. Someone he never even kissed.

I was also disappointed that the hero had never stated at some point that he never really loved the first woman, it was clear to me he really didn't, but he never said so. I also wish he would have discarded his sword, a constant reminder of her, but so far he hasn't. Their story does continue in the next book and I will probably read it, but I think this will be my last by this author.

This is a bascially clean read, but there are some sensual details regarding kissing and touching, but certainly nothing inappropriate. A teen can read this no problem.

My review was originally posted on Romancing-the-Book.com and is shown below:

Another great read by Dorothy Wiley and again set in the historical time period that I most favor – the formation of America in Colonial times and during the Westward expansion. This book begins right where the first book in the series lets off, in Kentucky in 1797, although this is Sam and Catherine’s story. Once again we are traveling with the Wyllies and their adopted brother, Bear, as well as Kelly and Catherine. We meet up with more men of evil as they enter Boonesborough, as far as they travel together in this story. Frank, their dirty and obnoxious leader, and his band of buffalo hunters are filthy, smelly, nasty and insult women the way they talk indecently in front of them when the settlers are riding through where the hunters’ tent is. Unfortunately they continue their foul ways throughout most of the story and there are several times when they meet up that problems arise, battles are fought, injuries and deaths occur and we learn how most of the townspeople have been hurt by them through deaths of loved ones, rapes and the fear they level. There are also Indians talked of and one actual raid. Heartbreaking at times since Kentucky is their ultimate destination and where they are all pinning their hopes for the future.

There was a lot of sadness – injuries, death, attacks, and a trial. There was some happiness since the Wyllies will see the end of their travels coming soon but still have to get their land, build homes and start their livelihoods. It was interesting to learn of the process needed to go through in order to claim land but then ultimately own it. There was a wedding, family, friends, new friendships forged, laughter, tears, heartache, fear and a sense of loss. The descriptions of the river, the forests, the falls, the lunar rainbow or Moonbow, the town and some of the shops and goods carried were vivid and made me feel that I was there. Catherine is full of surprises and it’s interesting to hear her plans for the future since Sam had told her upon meeting her that her destiny lies in her own hands. But it was also enlightening to hear of her past, her upbringing and who her dead husband was. Seeing her and Sam finally realize their love for each other was rewarding and helped soften some of the blows they had to take once reaching Kentucky. As this book ends we know their final destination will be Cumberland Falls on the Cumberland River, south of Fort Harrod and I can’t wait to see the reactions of the others when they find out.

What a great start to this series and I look forward to reading the next and final book, Whispering Hills of Love, William and Kelly’s story that’s been alluded to a few times. I also look forward to reading any other books this author pens if this is her caliber of writing as shown to us in the first two books of her series. Wouldn’t it be great though if there was a fourth book that took place in England? Don’t want to say any more and spoil the story for others!

I received a copy of New Frontier of Love from the author for an honest review. New Frontier of Love is the second book in the thrilling American Wilderness Series Romances. I thoroughly enjoyed book 1, Wilderness Trail of Love. Happily, New Frontier of Love is just as absorbing. In it, we learn the story of the oldest Wyllie brother, Capt. Sam Wyllie, who suffered heartbreaking personal loss during the Revolutionary War and Catherine Adams, a woman whose husband has been murdered as they traveled to Kentucky.

Fate throws Catherine and Sam together but past secrets and unforeseen obstacles threaten any chance of love. When unexpected setbacks plague the Wyllie family and others traveling with them, vicious murderers close in forcing Sam, Catherine and the Wyllies to seek strength in both their faith and love in order to survive.

New Frontier of Love continues the epic tale of the Wyllie family and others as they traverse a perilous thousand mile journey to Kentucky. Constant danger, threat of injury and death interplay with faith, hope and love throughout the book making it an unforgettable read.

Sam and Catherine's story is full of surprises, heart-breaking events, humor, and love scenes that make even your heart flush. This new author weaves a colorful tale through the pioneering days of the old west that draws you into the time period as well as the love story. Sam and Catherine's journey to find and claim each other's hearts is full of close-up vivid imagery that fills your senses. The author's intriguing and complex characters peak your interest and keep you wanting more. This book has just the right balance of adventure, heart-wrenching events, and satisfying good vs. evil outcomes. It is a fresh new approach to a western novel that is worthy of a top-ranking and will easily capture reader's hearts. The author's second book is equally as fun and satisfying as her first and I'm anxious to read the third book in her new American Wilderness series.

Read 50% of the book, no rating.

I like Dorothy Wiley's style. The story reads very well. But the pacing is too slow for me. I kept waiting for the lead characters to have some real interactions but instead there were just a lot of men talking to each other about living in the wilderness.

The first book is very much similar to this book in terms of pacing and relationship development. So I assume that this is her style. I will not be continuing with the series for this reason alone. If Ms. Wiley adopts a different style of building up the relationship b/w lead characters, I would gladly give her future books another try.

This book has it all! Action, romance, courtroom drama, and knife fights contained within an educational story of frontier Kentucky immediately after the American Revolution. I had read Dorthy Wiley's other work and enjoyed it tremendously. I had to order this book as well. When it arrived I could not put it down. The characters are well developed and their struggles are formidable. You cheer on the heroes and despise the villains. I was not disappointed by this book. Ms. Wiley is a talented writer and I look forward to watching her career grow!

Historical romance kindle Unlimited. First book was very good, but this one is quite boring. Nothing really going on between the h and h and we have already got to 54%. Just lots of ramblings about how they want to start their new life on the frontier with nothing really happening.

Stoped reading at 54% time for something else to read.

You know, sometimes you run across a book that will just blow your mind and leave you happy and fulfilled. Well, what cannot be said about this book and author, it’s another big HUGE grand slam? I really liked the first book in this series ‘Wilderness Trail of Love’, and this second in the series did not disappoint me at all. It had the same warmth and family love and although I fell in love with the characters from book one, this one strengthened mu love of the characters even more and has me wanting more.

Sam Wyllie an ex Captain in the Revolutionary War is a strong dark and dangerous man home from the war fighting inner battles that no one knows of. Demons that haunt his dreams and his days that he cannot escape. He travels with his family to the wilds of Kentucky in search of a better life, land that they can build their dreams on, raise cattle, and raise their families. What he finds is danger as well as untold beauty as he and his family struggle across a wild untamed land.

Catherine a Boston proper lady is traveling with the Wiley family toward a better life in the wild land of Kentucky. She is drawn to Sam the oldest of the brothers, his strength, and the love he has for his family, his protective nature, and these are all things that she didn’t have with her husband and qualities in a man that she longs for. It’s not been that long since she lost her husband on this untamed trail, but as their marriage was an arranged and loveless marriage, she is ready to find love. A true everlasting love.

This book is the second the Wilderness series and a stand alone, however it does not give you a lot of details from the first book, so I would recommend that you start at the beginning of this series so you know the whole story of the characters, it will make this second book all the more interesting.

This author has definitely done her research and she seems to be well educated on the trials and hardships that would befall people in the time period traveling across a wild and harsh land to find a better way of life in the west. Her main characters are strong in mind and body and they are very family oriented. Of course the book has its villains that are mean to the core and twists and turns that will have you glued to the pages.

There is love, deep sadness, hope, humor, action, you name it this book has it as did the first in the series. There were times I laughed out loud, and then there were parts in the book where I literally had tears from the sadness. I love the author’s style of writing; it’s clean, easy to read and moves at a good pace. The editing was outstanding; I didn’t see anything that really took away from the book at all, no hang-ups.

I will definitely continue with this series and this is and has become one of my favorite authors. I would definitely recommend the series to readers of any age. What little bit of intimacy there is in the book it’s very cleanly written. I think what grabs me the most in the story is the closeness of the family and their friends. The characters just seem to come alive in your mind’s eye, you can see the feel their emotions, their hardships and this is what makes it such a heartfelt story.

Please, do yourself a huge favor and read this series. You will not regret it. I give this and RTA rating of five huge stars.

This is #2 in the American Wilderness series by Dorothy Wiley. I liked the first one enough to buy and read the sequel, and am happy to say I enjoyed this one just as much! (I suggest reading them in order.)

The general story, begun in book #1, is of four Wyllie brothers, their adopted brother, Bear, Stephan’s wife, Jane, and their four daughters. At the tail end of 18th century, the group leaves New Hampshire to establish a new life in the rich land of Kentucky. Their purposes so beautifully summarized on pg.22: “Unlike his brother Stephan, for Sam going to Kentucky was about adventure, and a new beginning, not land. The journey allowed him to draw upon his courage and experience freedom – the freedom for which he, as a Captain in the Continental Army, had fought so hard and for which so many others died. They won more than a war. They won a country. And the freshest part of the new country was Kentucky – that’s what drew his family there.”

Book #2 is the end of the trail; more specifically, Sam and his budding relationship with Catherine, the beautiful young Boston bred widow whose husband was murdered on their own journey. Tough-as-nails Catherine joins the Wyllie group, and arriving in Kentucky is the start of romance between Catherine and Sam. He has some personal demons to overcome, not to mention the obnoxious and dangerous group of hunters that harasses the group as they enter Boonesborough, Kentucky.

I love historical settings when I can really get a feel for a time I can only imagine. Sam summarizes what it took to courageously venture beyond the safe eastern portion of our fledgling country; pg.95: “Reputations are made on the frontier, not preserved. Sometimes life forces a person to live by new rules. Life can be uncivilized and unpredictable. You’ve (Catherine) learned that already as much as anybody. We have to adapt – not live by the rules that fit another place and another way of life.” Courage and faith were pretty important in this new country.

Author Dorothy Wiley accomplishes that time machine beautifully for me, plus infuses the story with some sweet romance that intrigues the girly part of me. A couple comments here: the final showdown with the Foley bros. was too drawn out for me; but Chapter 9, especially the knife scene – Awesome!

Waiting patiently for book #3…whenever it comes out…

“New Frontier of Love” by Dorothy Wiley is a historical romance novel set in Kentucky of 1797. The romance part takes place between Captain Sam Wyllie and Catherine Adams, a widow in search of freedom and independence and is the most accomplished part of the novel. Wiley seems comfortable in the genre and writes great, enjoyable dialogues with believable characters.
As European, eager to learn more about the times following the American Independence and American History in general, the book didn’t offer quite as much detail or information that I would have liked to get my hands on. The sense for the era however did feel authentic.
The writing is skilful and the various plots and supporting characters add to this entertaining and sparkly novel. Recommended for fans of romances with a different setting.

Obviously I didn't see this as others did. This read more like a family history than anything else and there were way too many things going on. There were a number of references to things that happened in the first book and although easy to figure out, it assumed the reader knew what happened in book one. There was a plethora of bad guys and I realize this type of person was abundant back in this time, but when I read a historical romance, I don't expect so many people dying or fighting about something.

My biggest complaint was there were too many long, drawn out thoughts from the characters so I found myself skimming large parts to get to dialogue to see what was going on.

This book is a quick read. This novel is a American frontier romance that chronicles the driving desire behind why settlers journeyed westward—ownership of land. Wiley does a superb job with this set of characters. Each in their way is a strong character capturing the pioneer spirit. Together they make this tale very believable as a possibility of what would have transpired as families faced the hazards (threats from weather, illness, wild animals, Indians, and other unsavory characters) of this thousand mile journey.

Very engaging! More action than romance but a good blend of both!

Another brilliant tale of hardship and turmoil, love and desire! I wouldn't exactly call this series clean, while the actual sex act is not described, the foreplay is! I wouldn't necessarily call this a western either since it's about a hundred years before all the other westerns I read are, but it is set in the Kentucky territory and is a bit mountain man/ frontier men/ Settler! But whatever you call it it's full of action and sacrifice, hardship, and justice! It's beautiful!

I like this Wild West story and maybe would have liked it more if I had read Book 1 first. Actually, I started reading book 5, and then realized it was in a Series, so went into my Kindle library to see if I could find the others. I found 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, but no 1. What I did read in Book 5 give me a few spoilers for Book 2. The characters in the story were well-developed, the historical aspect was interesting, but there was a fair amount of gritty murder, gritty fights, vulgarity ,revenge and sadness and may not be for the 'feint hearted'. The romance aspects were sweet and maybe not completely believable, but then again, times were different back in those days. I would recommend that the Book numbers be more obvious on the covers.

I certainly plan to read more by this author. The story was well done and well-edited, and once you start the series, you will definitely want to read more. I gather Book 1 is about Stephen and Jane, this book 2 was predominantly about Sam and Catherine so each book is featuring one of the 'family men'. Reading the books in the series will fill in a lot of information about the family, but I liked how the author made each book a complete story, starting it and ending it in a way that makes the reader feel satisfied. Well done, Dorothy Wiley!

Shortly after the Revolutionary War, the Wyllie family travel to Kentucky to start a dynasty in the land renown for Daniel Boone, fierce attacks by the Shawnee, and a collection of folks. We start with Colonel Sam Wylie and the Boston blue blood Catherine, as they seek their fortunes and work with their families.

My reaction:
This is my second book about the Wyllie. I truly enjoyed that book; this one is a little more graphic in the violent encounters, but it is true to the history of settling Kentucky. I will need to read more about the Wylie brothers and, if I am fortunate, their kids and the first generation's life still in a state that is unbelievably beautiful.

A Love Story in the Wilderness

This story is set in a frontier town in Kentucky founded by Daniel Boone. There is plenty of action between the Wyllie family (and those traveling with them) and the inhabitants of Boonesborough. Sam and Catherine become interested in one another and we see the development of their love. Will they give in to love? You will need to read this book to find out. I just could not put this book downand read late into the night and into early morning hours to finish. I hope you enjoy it also.

I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title. (Audible Membership )

Our intrepid travellers have reached the destination in Kentucky, but their first encounter isn't a pleasant one.Not to be deterred, they move further into the frontier township, encountering more hospitable residents.
They find a campsite and find the truth of acquiring land grants through the government office.
However, other matters take up their consideration, and they have another battle to fight.

In this 2nd book in the series, which can easily be read as a stand alone, the Wyllie family has finally made it to Kentucky, but their troubles are far from over. The imagry, historic detail, and well developed characters all combine in a gripping edge of your seat adventure tempered by the developing love between Sam and Jane. It takes courage to love and love can heal the deepest of wounds.

A wonderful book about having courage to love and look to the future.

This was my first book by Dorothy Wiley and I found myself caring deeply for the characters. This was a wonderful story of finding the courage to face our past and our vulnerabilities and having the faith to build a future.

A great frontier romance

Another great story about frontier America and the Wyllie family and friends. While the story features Sam and Catherine, it revolves around all the brothers, their families and friends traveling with them. The group faces new struggles and danger as the arrive in Boonesbrough. Love is acknowledged, past hurts revealed and tragic loss.
