Come Full Circle

Rate this book
The Iceberg Trilogy concludes in raw, breathtaking style in Come Full Circle.

In 1995, in remote British Columbia, a mysterious woman begins letting go of the only person central to her life for eighteen years. On the other side of the continent, Rebecca, her ninety-six year old mother, remembers secrets hidden from her family for decades. Meanwhile, halfway around the world, in Sydney Australia, Rebecca’s granddaughter, on the eve of her thirty-third birthday, realises she is still haunted by events that happened during her teenage years. Eluded by happiness following a string of disastrous relationships, Lindsay dives into a quest to understand herself and discover the missing pieces of her life.

This moving tale of joy and sorrow completes the journey – nearly a century later – of much loved characters first introduced in Seldom Come By.

Australian-born Sherryl Caulfield is a marketer, writer and traveller. After twenty years working for some of the world’s leading technology brands and a stint with Outward Bound, she longed to write about the human experience and the redemptive qualities of nature.

In 2006, haunted by an encounter with a woman she met in Canada, Sherryl started what has now become known as The Iceberg Trilogy. From her home in the Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand, she distilled the lives of three generations of women – Rebecca, Evangelene and Lindsay – over the course of a century. In the telling of their stories she crafted a series rich in landscapes – of sea, land and the human soul. Book 1 of The Iceberg Trilogy, Seldom Come By will be available in December 2013.

In one word ... breathtaking!

But when have I ever left things at one word. How can I ... such an epic journey deserves more.

So much I want to say but so much I can't. Come Full Circle should be your own experience to best appreciate it in all its beauty, that anticipation of not knowing what's in store but knowing it will be good. Just know there will come a point when you won't be able to turn the pages fast enough. And then you won't want it to end.

Layers are peeled back, pieces of the puzzle slowly come together, it may not be the picture you thought it would be or the picture you want but then again it could be even better. (cryptic enough for you lol)

Come Full Circle is a complete sensory treat ... exquisite descriptions, Sherryl's love for the natural world pulls you in, wraps arms around you, surrounding, immersing. I loved that almost as much as revisiting the characters I've come to know and love.

I loved the falconry aspect, and the haunting beauty of Lindsay and Ryan's night encounter with the whale raised the hair on my arms and made me teary until whale penises and lice were mentioned and I dissolved in a fit of giggles. (and yes I googled)

Resilience, love and healing ... I think Rebecca's words sum up Come What May better than I can.

'And what else have I learned of life from the sage old age of one hundred. That it's still mysterious, mostly it is joyful and abundant, sadness fades, attitude is everything, as is forgiveness."

Tears, smiles, sighs ... thank you for the most glorious ride Sherryl Caulfield. My heart is happy :)

Come Full Circle, (The Iceberg Trilogy 3), Sherryl Caulfield

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre:  women’s fiction. Romance

This has been a breathtaking trilogy, and I’ve learned so much from it, harsh yet beautiful landscapes, a family saga that's so real, so full of tragedy and yet such happiness too, and nature and wildlife explored as certain parts of the story demanded. I love trivia, have a mind that just soaks up facts like a sponge ( mum used to say I was a mine of useless information – it hasn’t changed!)  and there’s so much here I had no idea about. Its a world far away from here in the UK, and I felt absorbed into a different culture of times past.

I loved the first book, taking us back in history to Rebecca and Samuel’s story, full of the awe inspiring icebergs and the harshness of life as it was then everywhere, and especially so in such a sharp climate. It made me cry in parts, the emotion was so deep and real, and book two followed that up with the story continuing with Rebecca’s children and more tragedy, but timely nuggets of joy too – its not all doom and gloom, angst and anger.

This time we’re still with the children in part but mostly with Rebecca’s daughter Evangeline ( Gene/Eva) and granddaughter Lindsey. I’d forgotten all of what Gene went through in book two, but as I was reading it came back to me, though I want to read all three books back to back sometimes so that the story really flows. I was a bit harsh and judgemental of Gene until her backstory came to me, and then I felt so much, for her, for Sonny, her siblings, for Rebecca, and of course her two daughters who she’d left when they were so young.
We meet some new characters too, and Ryan is a great addition with his love of wildlife, adding yet more to the story as it unfolds. The scenes where he and Lindsey explore the local wildlife are breath-taking and that spectacular day with the eagles– that will stay with me for a long time. Then he lightens the heaviness of the situation by his facts, some of which had me, like Lindsey, thinking  “is that really true??” ( Google is my best friend at times like that!)
There were some huge surprises to come out of this book, a long journey for Lindsey of searching, and in doing so she found herself too, and her future. I loved catching up with the whole family, and seeing the story from both ends, seeing how adversely affected Lindsey had been by her mothers defection, and yet how Eva/Gene saw what she did in a very different light. As I got to remember her I also recalled her sad history, the way she struggled, the way she looked at things and I began to understand why she did what she did, not from selfishness and uncaring motives but the very opposite. I so felt for her even when I also was upset for her family.
The doctor Lindsey saw was really good, making her look at her past, Eva’s past in a very different light, and that allowed me to see things differently too.
When I got to The End I was sad, and wanted more, and then to my delight I found Sherryl had given that in an Epilogue. That wrapped everything up perfectly and really did complete the circle, with evocative memories of book one and the people in it and reminders here of just how entwined they, and we, all are in our pasts.

Its full of the same fabulous writing, rich language used to its fullest, words that fit so well even though they’re rarely used as the first two books. I love novels that do that, English is such a beautiful, descriptive language and yet the same few words come up again and again – I’m guilty of that, even though I love this literary articulation I can’t do it, I just can’t think of words that really fit, and usually descend to an online thesaurus when really frustrated.....Some authors try it and it feels stilted, artificial, wrong and they really should stick to simplicity, but Sherryl has a real mastery over words, and it adds such a different perception to what's written at times, having just the right phrase.

Stars: five, a superb ending to an emotional family saga. It's such a complex story that you'll get the best from it having read books one and two first.

Resilience, love and healing - Rebecca's comment struck a cord. It took me awhile to get into this book but I think I need to re-read all three back to back so the story flows. I missed the ice bergs but as this story unfolded and I came to know Lindsay better the more I enjoyed it. Ryan is a welcome addition and made it that bit more interesting. And Sydney? What can I say? I don't want to live there again but I do miss it at times

The final book in the Iceberg Trilogy follows a young woman from Sydney to the Canadian Wilderness as she searches for her missing mother. Caulfield's love of nature shines through her prose as the reader is swept along on another journey of heartbreak and healing. Come What May is a touching end to this epic family saga.

Hhhhhhhmmmm! The plot had promise of a worthy ending but I found the prose in this book different to the previous two. Here, it lacked flow and clarity.
