Buffy the Vampire Slayer / Angel: Past Lives

Rate this book
A huntress is stalking demons in L.A. Normally this would be a good thing, except she's leaving survivors and telling them Angel sent her. Now Angel has an army of demons on his tail, hell-bent on revenge. What's a vampire to do? And how long can his human companions, Cordelia and Wesley, remain safe? Meanwhile, monsters are fleeing the carnage in L.A. and seeking refuge in Sunnydale, where they're being dealt with by the Slayer. Buffy, Giles, and the gang learn about the havoc, and Buffy determines that she must go to Angel's side to lend a hand; a decision that does not sit at all well with Buffy's vampire-hunting boyfriend, Riley.

Angel finds himself beset by demons seeking revenge for the actions of a mysterious woman. Outnumbered, and with Wesley and Cordelia hospitalised by this new enemy, Angel has to confront another shadow of his dark past. When word of his predicament reaches Sunnydale, Buffy and her friends choose to travel to LA to help their estranged allies, leading to an awkward reunion between Buffy and Angel.

I'm always a sucker for a story which had the main character on the ropes to begin with and I liked the organic and believable way in which this crossover comes about.
I was also thankful that this is mainly an Angel story, with the Buffy cast guest-starring, because the other way around would've just been like a story from the early seasons of the Buffy TV series. Here it feels more impactful that Angel, in his new life, needs help from his estranged lover.

The one major thing that prevented me from rating this book higher is that it all pretty much unfolds exactly as you would expect it to. The vengeful descendant of one of Angelus' victims leading a misguided life of revenge is pretty cliché and this book doesn't really do much with the idea that breaks any new ground.

This story deals a lot with regret for things in the past, Buffy and Angle are mooning over what they once had and someone with a serious vendetta is sending hoards of demons at Angel for things he did in the past as Angelos. Lots going on in this one, but the story was well balanced and exciting.

The minute Christopher Golden gets involved in anything you know it's going to be good.

Angel is finding himself not having to go out and hunt the demons anymore, they are all coming to him. Some of them so rare that they were thought of as extinct and they are all very angry with Angel for sending the girl to kill them and their friends. What Girl???

Well the mystery is soon revealed as Alexa Landry stops terrorizing the demons and starts going after Angel's friends, putting both Cordy and Wesley in the hospital. This is one of those rare times were we get a cross over and Buffy and the scoobies come to L.A to assist.

What they discover on so many levels is that the past never really goes away, it always comes Back to haunt you.

I definitely recommend this to any Buffy or Angel fan!

I liked how this one brought a lot of the characters back together, with their pasts haunting them all the way...

Very dramatic...

This is the first Buffy comic I've read that's not a part of Season 8 or Season 9. It was Buffy/Angel crossover with someone from Angel's past, but it was so uncompelling.
