Just wanted to preface this review by saying that I received this book on Free Comic Book Day 2016 at Up, Up, and Away in Blue Ash, Ohio. I cannot recommend that comic book store enough.
Anyway, this teeny tiny comic broke my heart. It had a frame story of River babysitting baby (Emma, I think? Was that her name?) and entertaining her by telling her a whimsical fairytale version of the crew's history called the "Warrior and the Wind". It was heartbreaking because, of course , which takes place before this series, apparently. But it was really sweet.
I am a bit confused though, because that story will only be sweet and non-spoilery to people who have already seen both the entire series of Firefly and the movie, Serenity... So, I'm not really sure it's the best choice for FCBD, since the goal of the free comics is to entice newbies into stores and to try new franchises. It was more of a gift to loyal fans, instead of a tempting sampler for new readers.
The other two stories were a ghost story from Hellboy and an action sequence from Alien. If they were intended to get me interested in either series, they completely failed. I just read this and honestly can barely remember the plots. Hence the three stars for the overall comic.
Well, I have to say I was disappointed in this. I was hoping for a story from the Firefly or Serenity stories…but instead it was just River telling a “bedtime story” with some strange twists to a Zoe’s baby. I haven’t actually watched Serenity yet (we own it but haven’t watched it), though I know they killed off a lot of the characters, so perhaps I would have liked it more if I’d watched that. I believe it probably shows a quick snapshot in a twisted version of Zoe and Walsh’s relationship. But it wasn’t even a real story. It was just a couple pages long... I was not impressed and was very disappointed.
There was also a very short Hellboy comic as well. Again, I can hardly call it a comic. It was only a few pages long and barely had a plot. I really had no idea what was going on.
It ALSO included a short Aliens story also, which I read, but had no idea what was going on. Perhaps if you’re a fan of Aliens or have read the comics it would make more sense to you.
This was overall a very disappointing grab for me.
The Firefly story was AMAZING, wonderfully sweet and just beautifully illustrated. Gives me hope for the new series. The Hellboy story was OK, kind of disjointed or incomplete. The Alien story was almost incomprehensible... oh, in that way it totally fits with Promethus!
