Fate of the Unwilling

Rate this book

What if you woke in a damp forest naked, bruised, and unable to remember your life—your name? Would you trust the deaf stranger whose embrace feels familiar? Or the cop who speaks to you like you’ve committed a crime?

Silas offered a guest room. He even agreed to call her Daphne. But that’s not her name. She's three-thousand-miles away from home, and he doesn't believe in coincidences. Keeping an eye on her is the only way to protect his secrets and conceal their connection until he can determine her motives.

Max doesn’t trust her. Any good detective can see through an amnesia act. He just has to prove it to get out of his patrol uniform for good. The only thing in the way is his brother.

In this small harbor town, nothing is as it seems. And until she can piece together the shards of memory that come and go, she’s not telling them anything.

Fate of the Unwilling by Amy Lee
Fate, Fortune, and Fury #1

Woman
Nearly naked,
Memory gone,
Battered and bruise.

Men
More than one,
Good and bad,
What do they and will they mean to her?

I must admit that I wasn’t sure going into this book that I would find anything new in a story with a main character who lost her memory BUT I stayed up till 3am this morning reading because once started I could not stop till I found out what happened. So, thumbs up on this one…and I believe we have a lot to look forward to as this is a stellar book whether or not it is the debut work of a new author!

What I liked:
* The “unknown” factor that threaded through the story.
* The way the “unknown” was made known slowly as the story was told through flashbacks, thoughts of various characters, and other devices.
* The quality of the writing
* That I wasn’t really sure what was going on until it was revealed…I surmised but was not always correct.
* That none of the characters were “perfect” – they had flaws and foibles and some serious problems.
* The way the characters grew, developed, and became real over the reading of the story.
* Sitting here pondering the story and wondering what will happen in book two.
* That the story has a conclusion of sorts for at least one couple but in a way, it is a HFN with a real lean toward a HEA.
* Being able to like characters that were not perfectly likable.
* Feeling I understood the characters and their backstories…or at least as much as was revealed and though not everything...enough.
* That it made me think, care, wonder, and want to know more

What I want to know:
* What will happen with Simon, his daughter and ex-wife
* What else the woman referred to as Daphne will find out/reveal through past memories as book two unfolds.
* How the legal case that crops up in the story will be handled and what the outcome will be.
* What will happen in the lives of Silas, Silas’s brother Max, “Daphne”, the reprehensible characters that were behind a lot of the trouble created in this story…hmm…
* More…

What I didn’t like:
* The bad people I was meant to dislike.
* Not sure this is a dislike or a discomfort or something else BUT as “Daphne” remembers she unearths some rather difficult memories…and that was uncomfortable for her and for me.

Did I enjoy this book? Yes!
Would I read more in this series/by this author? Definitely!

Thank you to the author, NetGalley and Xpresso Book Tours for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Love a suspense romance?!? Then, you definitely need to read this book. I received an ARC of this book and loved it right away. A.L. Goulden sucks you right into the book with Emma’s story.

Emma and Silas leave you in a rooting for them. Silas is deaf but is I tune with Emma right away. A.L. Goulden has deep character development with Emma. Emma’s story has twists and turns which are unsuspected and leaves you guessing until the end.

The books ending definitely leaves you wanting more and I cannot wait to see what is in the next book.

This is the first book I have read from A.L. Goulding and it definitely won’t be the last!! I received an arc of this book and I’m so glad I did. This story gets your attention from the first word and keeps you engaged until the last one. Great characters, descriptive writing that makes you feel like you’re in the story right along with the characters, sexiness, intrigue and mystery. This book has it all. Don’t miss out on this fantastic read!!

This book was interesting and pretty fast paced. There were a few times when it felt like there were too many characters, but that was explained when i realized that it's meant to be book 1 of a series. If that had been clear from the outset i think i would have worried less about it.

Ignoring those issues, the story is interesting and compelling and i never once willingly put the book down. Definitely a fun read!

I was instantly drawn into this story. Such vivid descriptions placed me right in the book and kept me there the entire time. I felt the characters struggles, fears, lusts and wins. There’s a great balance of suspense and romance. Characters are well developed and make you love and loathe accordingly! Couldn’t put it down once I started it!
I read this as an ARC <3

*Spoiler Free: not talk of fine plot points or characters in this review, purely from a reading standpoint*.
First off, this book sounded like it was going to be quite interesting. The premise had promise. Unfortunately, it just did not hold up very well to reading. It took a lot to get into, and it felt like a bit of a chore the whole way through.
While the writer is well versed in writing for film and television, those skills don't quite translate well into narrative fiction. At times the action and writing felt sloppy. Moments written to be dramatic and filled with tension felt hallow. At times it felt like whole scenes were missing and the action was lost. One moment the characters were here in a flashback, and the next they are somewhere else and you are absolutely unsure how they got there. Or they are doing one thing and suddenly another and it feels like something got missed in between because none of the things that would lead up to that particular action were present in the scene.
There was also some sloppy moments, meant to give the main protagonist some depth of character, but it came across as careless (The character has a memory of Paris, vivid and very artistically speaks about it, and in the next sentence says "apparement si"... which is not French, though it is passed off as French.)
Some characterization and thoughts do not flow organically. For one, a woman who is suffering from amnesia and is living through trauma spends a really really really strange amount of time feeling sexual about the situation she finds herself in. While I understand that it is part of the genre hybrid being created, it really comes across as more "wrong" than "sintilating".
When it comes to the thriller aspect, the hook is nice and has lots of promise, but the execution of the story itself around that plot and the characters left a lot to be desired.
I wanted to rate this higher, I went into it with lots of excitement, but it just fell flat as the story came together.

All in all, it was a slog to finish, and I felt as if it was more of a task to complete than an experience to enjoy.

"Fragments of her past shaking loose in public was a terrifying thought."

A woman wakes up naked and beaten in the woods with no memory. You may think you have read this story before but trust me it has never been written quite as poignantly descriptive or romantic as in Fate of the Unwilling by Amy Lee (A.L.Goulding).

Our mysterious woman is rescued by Silas, a deaf man, who gives her his guest room and a place to hide. He calls her Daphne and at first they are cautious around each other. As she heals she starts to have bits of disturbing memories. There are flashes of an affair and blackmail. Was she this horrible person?

To add to her confusion and fear Silas has a visit from his brother the cop who is not so sure Daphne is an innocent victim. While Silas tries to get to the truth his own secrets are threatened to be revealed and that could be deadly for all of them.

This book was so much fun to read as a twisty thriller but also as a sexy romance. As Daphne and Silas develop feelings the scenes between them range from a cute flirtation to a steamy bedroom. I was not expecting to enjoy their relationship but it was a highlight for me. As truths were revealed I was surprised and a little confused by the many connecting pieces but that is partly my muddled mind trying to figure things out. I highly recommend this exciting thriller and hope there is a Silas series in the future.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via #NetGalley for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A disoriented woman stumbles out of the woods, to the marina of Gig Harbour and into the arms of Silas Wayland, the deaf brother of police officer Max Wayland. She does not know who she is or what happened to her, and Silas offers to take her in for the time of the investigation. Soon it becomes clear that this is not a simple case of either abduction or assault, and that the female victim, for now named Daphne, may not be as innocent as assumed. While her memory slowly returns, things become seriously hot between Daphne and Silas, who seems to have some secrets of his own.

This was a fast-paced read with a very complex and tangled story-line, but it was intriguing to follow Daphne on her journey into her own past, each step raising questions and even more self-doubt. Whom can she trust, and even more important, can she trust herself? The author constructed a clever web of intrigue and deceit, and only at the end all threads became untangled to reveal a dangerous, even deadly conspiracy. A decent debut novel which at the end hints at a possible and welcome sequel.

Fate of the Unwilling by Amy Lee

The novel hooked me immediately. A woman awakens in a forest, clad only in a dirty t-shirt. She has no memory of how she arrived there. She has no memory at all. She does not even remember her own name.
She wanders out of the forest and limps her way to a harbor where she finds a man--a deaf man--who knows something about her. He helps her and cares for her. "He had never known a woman like her, unbreakable yet built of glass, and he was certain she'd disappear if she knew everything." (Chapter 15) Will she disappear, or will she prevail?

The plot line is riveting, the unfolding of the mystery enthralling, and the sexual tension between the main characters scintillating. I hesitate to share any more information because I want you to accompany the woman on her journey without spoilers.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this exciting book.

The very first page of this book compels us to sit stuck on the spot to know where this girl, Daphne, would end up! She walks into the deaf Silas and his brother Max from the woods naked and bruised with thorns. Here at the first-ever meet, she finds a familiar connection with Silas, but Max is too suspicious to believe her. The story starts from there, with so many twists and turns, hooking you from the beginning to the end. This is a page-turning psychological thriller with no scarcity for romance. Amy Lee pulls us into Daphne’s world with the way of her penning.

This story made my eyes flutter through the lines to reach the end so that I could unravel the tied knots. But the sketching of characters in such a unique way made it hard to guess the upcoming scene which pushed me again into a mysterious knot. This is one of the best reads for those who love thrillers and to its best part, it also includes some sweet romances which have made it even more fun to read.

Wonderfully Rich!

As a thriller, "Fate of the Unwilling" by Amy Lee, kept me enthralled from the very first page. Although there are plenty of stories out there with a main character that has suffered amnesia, the way Daphne was presented made it seem fresh. Silas and Max are two sides of the same coin, one who offers kindness and the other mistrust. The twists of plot and turns the story takes because of them kept me glued to the book. I did not want to put it down! The way the characters interacted with each other, their environment, themselves was so realistic. I could put myself in their shoes, feel what they felt, especially the first scene where Daphne is in the forest by herself. The story is written with rich description and emotion. I loved it and want to keep reading the rest in the series. This is a good first book. There is even some romance (which made me happy!).  I would recommend this book to anyone!

Amy Lee's Fate of the Unwilling opens with a naked woman, battered and left outside near the water and woods. She finds help but cannot remember her name or how she got where she is. She does trust the deaf man that helps her just as she is wary of the local police.

As Daphne's memory returns in bits and pieces, what is revealed is scarier than anything that I would have imagined. Skilled white shoe lawyer who learns incriminating information about one of her firm's most important clients. Whether to continue to act in her client's defense or to step out and speak up? How far are her colleagues willing to go to preserve the status quo? Is there anyone from her old life that she can trust?

I thoroughly enjoyed Fate of the Unwilling - could not put it down! If you're looking for an unusual thriller with a heroine you can root for, Fate of the Unwilling is a terrific choice!

Fate of the Unwilling is the first book in Amy Lee’s Fate, Fortune, and Fury series. This captivating novel pulls you in as “Daphne” wakes up in the woods and walks until she finds someone to help her. Silas comes to her rescue, but his brother Max is persistent that she is lying. Unsure if it is her amnesia, but he knows something isn’t right. Nightmares haunt her nights, giving clues as to her past, but she is terrified of whom she may have been.

I found Fate of the Unwilling fascinating as Amy Lee sets a mood of suspense and intrigue. The added touches of teaching a hearing person the everyday life of a deaf person is interesting. This novel holds a web of secrets that unfolds into avenues I would never have thought about. Everyone has a mysterious past. I really enjoyed reading this book, even the truth as we knew it from the beginning became a lie.

I found this novel incredibly intriguing and an all in all fun and exciting read. I am a fan of the true mystery stories and I have read many books within the genre. However, I found this one a refreshing change of pace. Sometimes books in the genre can be quite heavy but this is incredibly well written.
I truly appreciate the quick-wit of the writer herself, and found her writing style to be quite enjoyable in a simplistic, and yet gripping way overall.
The plotline was one that I really was not expecting, and I can’t say enough about the character development and just how genuine they felt.
For those who are looking to explore a novel that is simply unlike anything they have read before, “Fate of the Unwilling” is one to check out. I enjoyed it very much and I highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed this! I don’t read a lot of thrillers, but I want to read more. This one worked for me. I wouldn’t really call this a romantic thriller, but there were some romance elements, that I appreciated, without taking over the story. I didn’t feel like the amnesia thing was too tropey or a cop out. It helped me really understand Daphne/Emma and made me suspicious of everyone else. There were a couple of loose ends at the end that didn’t get tied up perfectly but I didn’t mind. Also loved that she was a lawyer and the underlying themes there. And I loved the deaf representation and how that played in.

Probably a me thing, but for some reason I couldn’t keep Nate and Grant straight.

What a great psychological thriller.
Daphne, as she thinks she is, wakes up naked and in the woods, not sure how she got there or who she really is. She runs into Silas at a dock. Silas is deaf but can read lips. They have an instant connection and feel they were destined to meet, but they don't know how they are connected. Silas's brother Max is a cop and is very suspicious of Daphne.

As she slowly starts getting some of her memory back, but can't share that with Silas or his cop brother until she known more. Silas id holding onto a secret too.

I liked the two together and them trying to figure everything out. It ends up being really complicated and not tied up at the end so you know there is more to come!

This is not a typical roller coaster thriller, although the twists and suspense keep the pages turning. Fate of the Unwilling tells the story of "Daphne", suffering Fugue amnesia, as she uncovers her unlikable history- a history that has put her in grave danger. Memories start to crystalize and form vivid pictures that force "Daphne" to learn who she really is. Will the returning memories come fast enough to keep her ahead of the dangers barreling towards her? As "Daphne" returns to herself, she is given the chance to see her past choices through new eyes, and the inevitable questions arise: How did I become me? and How will I make a better version of myself?
It's a great read-a thriller and so much more. Read it. Now.

First book in a series, Fate of the unwilling has left me anxious for the coming installments.
The opening scene of this book is just brilliant and the sense of suspense and intrigue is sustained until the last minute. I love this type of book in which I cannot tell what would happen next.
Each character has been crafted in a different way and all of them are unique and interesting to follow.
Author Lee has decided to develop 44 chapters and none of them is dull or monotonous. I have been literally glued to its pages since there are a lot of different themes present in the tale, being crime, secrets, fear. I enjoyed this book a lot and I can’t wait to read the following books in the series!

I have to say the story line captivated me from the start. It has a really catchy beginning that keeps the readers very involved with this character that nobody knows anything about. Also, the complementary characters enhance the story a lot.

Author A.L. Goulden, aka Amy Lee, created this amazing suspense thriller that is going to keep readers on the edge of their seat wanting to solve and guess who she is and what happened to her.

I’m very excited to see the next books in this series, I have to say I really enjoyed the whole book and the development of each character. I also enjoyed the choices I had to make as a reader through the story, I almost felt like I was part of the investigation as well.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book was an enjoyable read, with good relateable characters, and a strong plot with a few suspenseful moments that pushed the story along nicely.

Sometimes I think some books are trying to convey a message, and this one was communication lol. I said it many times, just talk to each other guys, but then I suppose the book would be over too quickly :D.

The way she gets her memories back, and the angst she suffers trying to piece things together is artfully done, I could almost feel her struggle.

Overall, worth reading if you enjoy a clever story with likeable characters, going along at a reasonably fast pace.

“Fate of the Unwilling” is the first book of the Fate, Fortune, and Fury series, by author Amy Lee. This is a rich and engaging novel that combines its mystery plot, with the suspense and mind-bending of a psychological thriller.

The stories and description of the protagonists make them alluring and thought-provoking. The characterization here is exceptional, as they are interesting and well developed and the reader really empathizes and gets involved in the conspiracy, the doubts and in the love, as well.

All in all, I enjoyed this book very much and will be keen to read the next books of the series or any more by this author.

A very compelling novel

What an enthralling but at the same time frightening beginning! “Fate of the Unwilling” is the first book in a suspense series written by Amy Lee. I dare say that as soon as I opened the novel, I was hooked by the plot; I mean the idea of waking up in a brand-new place without clothes and memory gave me goose bumps. It is spooky!
Everything was so well-depicted that I felt immersed in the story and I experienced the same as the characters. Apart from that, there are some twisted turns that made the plot even more captivating. I liked it very much and I highly recommend it! I cannot wait to read the second part.

What a Compelling psychological thriller.

Daphne, the name she calls herself now, wakes up naked in the woods, not being able to remember who she is or how she got there. Daphne bumps into Silas at a dock. Silas is deaf but can read lips. They form an instant connection and Silas offers to allow Daphne to stay with him.

The writing style is exceptional and easy to follow and relate to. The story is full of dark secrets with twists and turns which makes this book difficult to put down.

A truly compelling novel, can't wait for the next book .....

Sucked me right in. It reminds me of Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta novels in a way, with the narrative that jumps from the bland ordinariness of everyday life to the violent tragedy that stalks police work. Cool thriller, convincing characters, just a few moments where I thought the plot jumped too quickly. But overall, this is very good and many people will enjoy it. I see it selling out paperback displays in airports (if we ever use them again) and grocery stores.

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in return for an honest review.

"Fate of the Unwilling" is a supernatural book written by Amy Lee. In this fiction not everything is what it seems; the confusion of the protagonist seems to have no end. He wakes up in an unknown place, without remembering his name or how he got there, but he runs into Silas. Can she remember how he got there?
The writing style of author Lee seems great to me; it is super detailed. Each scene is described in such a way that one feels immersed in the fiction. I think one of the things that I would change is the cover; in my opinion, it needs to be a little more striking.

I won this book in a giveaway on goodreads. There was a lot more romance and steamy R-rated scenes than I thought there’d be, though I’m sure if you’re into that you’ll really enjoy them. I loved the action and mystery, it was definitely thrilling and kept me guessing every time I thought I’d figured it out. A very cool idea and solid story, just be prepared for those adult scenes and themes!

(It does contain violence, abuse, sexual content, cheating, etc.)

Overall, this is a fun and exciting story. There were just some inconsistencies in the writing. Going into this, I didn't realize it was going to be a series... So I'll be interested to see how book two progresses.

This book was very interesting from the beginning but then got a bit more slow as time went on. I enjoyed the first part but felt as it went on it had more and more talk about law/lawsuits and lawyer terms that I just couldn't relate to. Overall I think it had an interesting plot.
