Eighteen-year-old heroine (Clare Anderson) meets thirty-four-year-old famous actor-hero (Rourke Somerville) and falls in love with him. But Clare’s sexy actress-mother wants Rourke all for herself so she splits them up. Five years later Clare is now a popular actress and is about to do a film on a ship/hotel called the “Queen Mary” in Long Beach, California. To Clare’s shock and dismay, Rourke is acting/directing the picture. How will she go through with it when she still has feelings for Rourke?

I liked the unusual setting, filming the movie aboard the Queen Mary. I didn’t really care for the heroine that much, she was a bit on the cold side. And she spent too much time with other men in the story and not enough time with the hero. Rourke was an obsessed alpha-male and he did have his jealous moments, which I enjoyed. The book sometimes seemed slightly sleazy, with the Hollywood-type parties Clare’s mother threw, and mother and daughter both sexually interested in Rourke… This was just an okay read, I usually enjoy Carole Mortimer’s books much more.

WOW..JUST WOW!!!This is one of my greatest favourites by Carole Mortimer."Golden Fever" is a epic kind of love-story i will never forget. This one was a hell of a hot sexy read i just couldn`t put down from the first page. The golden-haired beautiful actress Clare Anderson and the sexy charmer of an actor/director Rourke Sommerville are a beautiful pair and the sexual tension between them were helluva hot as hell. And how i just LOVE both of them.

I love the fact that Clare is a REALLY beautiful famous actress where every man are crazy about her,and i was so glad when Harvey broke off their engagement to marry another so she COULD FINALLY BE FREE FOR ROURKE.But she still managed to break poor Rourkes heart...Rourke Sommerville is a sexy hero all woman dream of for themselfes. All he lived for and breathed for was his love for Clare and i was so surprised when she had ruined him for other women, because ha had been unable to touch any woman at all after five years of their separation! He is the romantic kind of hero i just adored, and when i got to know about his past i just admired his braveness. He dared to love and he dared to show it.After all woman chasing after him all his life,he would be vulnerable to only Clare, and only her will he love.Gosh how i just LOVE THIS MAN!!!!!!!!!Such a possessive, jealous, sexy and demanding lover. This book only proves that Carole Mortimer`s work were as best as always in the vintage 80s.."Golden Fever" is a book every romantic lover would enjoy.

So worth your attention!

OTT tale of Hollywood excesses, Mommy Dearest, and a gold medallion wearing actor/director hero.
This is an intense story, but I had to knock off a star because there was way too much interaction with the two OMs and not enough between the H/h.

18 year-old daughter of the Queen of Hollywood falls for 34 year-old hero. Their first meeting occurs when he enters in her bedroom where she is putting on her bikini. She is topless and the hero thinks she's part of the "anything goes" party downstairs. He feels her up, kisses her and she likes it - but then her convent school training kicks in and she gets rid of him. Her mother also likes the H and makes the h promise not to go out with him. When her mother leaves to film somewhere, the h has a two week affair with the H that ends with him taking her virginity and her not enjoying it. They do have sex a second time, but the hero mistakes her tears of joy for more pain and he breaks it off abruptly. Heroine is upset - but not as upset as she was a few days later when she saw the hero in her mother's bed. She left for England and never saw her mother or the H again.

The story opens five years later when the h returns to California with her fiance manager (whom she hasn't slept with) to star in a movie being filmed on the Queen Mary. The director has been changed - and it's - you guessed it - the H.

This is a good story when you're in the mood for OTT drama and lots of OM, OW interactions across crowded rooms.

I loved it! It was a jump into the past, in the early 80s with Hollywood kind of lifestyle full of excesses and tackiness.
The heroine is the daughter of a famous actress who’s also a narcissist sex symbol. She’s been sheltered and living in a convent and as soon as she’s 18 and all grown up she’s back home where her mother is giving one of her wild parties, and it’s oh so wonderful! Movie stars and groupies swimming naked and having sex, its basically a x rated movie or a hugh Hefner party. And the hero! Oh the hero! With his golden medallion and heavy golden chain, I can almost see him! And what a sleazy pig he is! He turns up into the heroine’s bedroom while she’s naked and, without any shame, starts mauling her as if she were a pornstar! Really??? Without even knowing her!
It’s good to say that the heroine is a typical slutty virgin, and doesn’t react screaming and kicking like mad, she stands her ground and enjoys the hero’s dirty approach.
Finesse is not their second name.
The heroine’s mother is a jealous aging woman that would like to jump the hero’s bones so she tries in every way to prevent them from seeing each other, and I think it was the right thing to do since the hero was a 34 yo swine while the heroine was a 18 yo naive virgin.
Even if she did it for the wrong reasons.
The heroine though is a lil slut and doesn’t stop seeing the hero, who’s a sleazy manho until they eventually have sex.
Very bad sex though.
Because she’s a virgin and he rams into her like a knife into soft butter. Causing her pain and tears.
I wonder what experience taught to those men.
They should be gods gift to women and they cannot even manage a decent first time with a virgin.
A shame.
Their second time is much better but the hero is appalled because the heroine weeps afterwards so he thinks he isn’t able to give her pleasure.
Aaaaaannnndddd… instead of making some further efforts and trying to give a better performance with some patience and fantasy, he panicks and tells her it’s over between them.
Such a great lover he is.
The heroine is of course appalled and runs away.
When she goes back home later, she finds her mother and the hero in bed together.
He’s sleeping of course so we already know there’s a big deception and a big misunderstanding here.
She runs away.
Five years later she’s a famous actress and engaged to a good man, but of course there’s no passion between them.
Her new director and co partner in her new movie is surprise surprise- the hero!
So the bickering starts and there’s the usual CM tit for tat where they try to make the other jealous and they repeatedly insult each other… while kissing and mauling at every turn.
There’s a would be ow and two om but eventually the hero and the heroine find that they have been both deceived by the wicked witch of the west, the heroine’s mother! Who wins the award for worst mother of the decade!
We find out that both of them have been pining for the other and have been celibate for five years and all is well in the end.
Nice and light story that I liked because there’s the usual fast and brilliant style that is CM signature style. And both were besotted and stayed celibate! What can I ask for more?
And all that vintage dresses and parties! The heroine total yellow look: yellow shirt with yellow pants! The hero with his shirt unbuttoned until his navel! Whoever does that anymore???
And, while the heroine was a virgin and quite slutty, she wasn’t a doormat and I must admit that the hero was almost more immature than her even if he could have been her father.
Jayzuz what a trip I had!
Recommend it for some light fun.

This is a keeper! They meet at a party given by the heroine mother (total slut bitch) when she is 18. Mother wants the hero and plots to get him by eliminating the competition her daughter. She have a disaster of a first time with him and find the hero in bed with her mother. She leaves for London and they come together for a movie her the actress him the lead and director. She is engaged but he still tries to get her back not fully aware of the true situation. Her fiancée and her never had sex and she never slept with anyone else when he finds out the damage he did to her he is broken up with it. That scene near then end when he tells her he cried too when he had hurt her during their first time because he loved her, my heart just melted. So good.

Young heroine and older hero fall in love but their affair ends due to heroine's mother machinations. Years later they meet again, heroine is an actress and hero her director but now heroine is engaged to be married. After they clear all misunderstandings they get their HEA.

Angsty read. I always enjoy a jealous possessive hero!

Well this was definitely a CM! Medallion man actor/director Rourke (34) falls like a ton for 18 year old nepo baby Clare, much to her evil actress mother's jealousy. Suffice to say there's a deflowering so earth shattering (for him and her) that when they reunite 5 years later, these two exotically gorgeous film stars, despite being in their physical prime and surrounded by other exotically gorgeous film stars, have remained celibate ever since. The h is now well into 3 years of a celibate engagement with her handsome fiance. At this point, my sideways look to camera has my eyeballs rotating in my skull.
Anyhow, there are OMs and OWs aplenty as they film on board the Queen Mary (which I didn't know became a hotel in Long Beach, so a bit of education for me and no doubt a pre-internet tax deductible research trip for CM, I hope). Everything but the kitchen sink gets thrown at this and I bow to CMs ability to write such compelling romance in spite of it. I didn't love it but I certainly romped through it.

This is really a vintage book. The H wears his shirt almost unbuttoned, skin-tight white trousers, a gold medaillon on a gold chain on his bare chest… how awful.

Anyway, he is a besotted, passionate H. Love him, despite his clothes. He stayed faithful to the h ever since he first met her.

In the beginning of the book the h is an 18-year old virgin who had lived with the nuns in a convent. The H is a 34-year old playboy wild actor living a hedonistic life.

It’s not only the age gap (because 16 years is a lot when the girl is an 18 year old virgin) but also the difference in their lifestyles seemed too big. He confesses to the h, he got stoned 5 years before. I mean, “stoned”?!

Due to the h’s mother they split. The h gets engaged to another man and 5 years later the h and H meet again.

What bothered me: the h was cheating on her fiancé by making out with the H. She would have gone all the way with him if he hadn’t stopped. I don’t like cheaters, whether it’s the H or the h who does the cheating.

One night she was with her breasts bare in the arms of her fiancé. Literally the next night (not even 24 hours later) she was with her breasts bare in the arms of the H. That made me cringe.

This is a popular one amongst my friends and I was curious to read it. CM mostly writes of indulgent, deeply satisfying angsty reads!

This is great vintage stuff with an h who was young and almost falling for a handsome older H. The h’s mother was a famous Hollywood actress so they always had people at their place for parties and sexual gratification. The h grew up away from home in a boarding school and comes back one summer and meets the H.

Currently the h is engaged to another man and is a famous actress herself. I have to say this is rather a pet peeve of mine. I have trouble with connecting with an actress - famous at that- being in a serious committed relationship. To save the day, the H at present is her opposite lead in a movie where they meet 5 years later.

The H is mad because he thinks the h just disappeared one day and ran away from his advances. The h was made to run away when her mother enacts a deceptive scene of where she herself is sleeping with the same man. Uhh well I can’t.

This was way too much on my plate to overlook. A cheap tarty mother who could any day have the eyes for your own husband. Hmm. Well much theatrics but the H was a possessive alpha lover hot on the h’s heels. They eventually have an HEA. Meh.

Read a few days ago and have read 1/2 dozen books since then, so I am going to defer to STmargaret’s review which does an awesome job covering the ins and outs of this story:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Things I like:
*Celibacy rules
*May/December romance
*OM’s who are supportive not icky
*Jealousy abounds(it is nice when the H is jealous, they need to be taken down a peg or two)
*Love/lust at first sight
*the oms in the story seem to get their own love matches as well!

Negative Things:
Mommy dearest doesn’t get the comeuppance she needs(except the fact that her daughter pretty much disowned her 5 years ago) The hero will be directing her on the next movie so hopefully she will get some just desserts then.

WTH things: The H enters the 18 year old catholic boarding school girl h’s bedroom as she is changing into her swimsuit…this is how he introduces himself, indicating they all get naked at these Hollywood parties😯

LOL things: The H wears a gold medallion

That is right up there with a silk cravat!

A vintage HP that is a must read.

The 18 yr old h meets the man of her dreams at her mother’s pool party. He’s 34, he’s gorgeous and he’s a film star. She has a hot 2 week relationship with him not knowing her actress mother wanted him for herself.

After their night together, she finds her lover passed out in her mother’s bed and her barely dressed mother insinuates that there was a night of passion.

Her heart destroyed, the h leaves LOs Angeles and heads for London. She has nothing to do with the H or her evil witch of a mother for over five years. Then she gets cast in a movie being filmed in L.A., and learns that the H has taken over as director when the original director breaks his leg.

There is so much hurt and drama between them throughout the entire book, I wanted to hug them both. Their interactions all end up with a fight and unkind words being thrown back and forth. There were some real zingers too.

This is one of those books that you will read, fall in love with, and re-read every so often. It’s a keeper.

"Golden Fever" is the story of Clare and Rourke.
An old school M&B romance with an obsessed hero, a crazy in love heroine, loads of OM/OW drama, a selfish and devious mother and misunderstandings which cause a 5 year separation.
Id have given it a higher rating if not for the detailed scenes with OM, as well as all the uncomfortable "rape" mentions. Also the secondary character drama was a tad much.
Overall, if not for the obsessed/stalkery hero, this would have been a 1 star.

Deeply tacky and sleazy, but fun. 4 stars!

This book was originally published in 1982 and it really shows in the way consent/lack thereof is handled: Tbh, since this story is so campy I wasn't that bothered either, but YMMV.

This book had such potential. But the girl was a ninny. H & h had a two week long relationship after which she left him because of something she thought had happended. She never gave him a chance to explain or defend himself. 5 years later they meet up again. She still does not allow him to explain. She keeps harping about the old wrong over and over. Then in the last few pages everything sorts itself out of course, then we get to see the H's point of view to find out that he is just as stupid as she was. Stewps (stretching my mouth and making a noise). If it wasn't an ebook I would have toosed it across the room).

If you can get past the ick factor of the huuuggge age gap and how normalized it was then this was an entertaining read. It def helped that both characters were celibate during separation (which seems insane bc H was known as such a ladies man but I guess it emphasizes how much their separation affected him). It was cute how Gene was the one that pushed/bullied them to work through their differences. I also loved how the H orchestrated things in the background to also get them in the same place for a specific length of time to hopefully work things out. Definitely showed his dedication to at least trying to get her back.

The h is such a talented actress that she can’t act at all in the H’s vicinity.
The H is such a creative director that he can’t direct at all when he’s in the h’s vicinity.
So they go on wasting everybody’s time. Who cares about other people’s efforts in making a film? Only those two matter. And they’re in love.

Maybe I would have liked this second-chance story better if not for the way the H acted 5 years ago. He gets to groping the teenager without her consent and not caring about her lack of experience before they are even introduced to each other. And his excuse? She was born old.

Golden Fever

This story was about second chances. They had met at her mothers house. But in Hollywood fashion what feelings they had was blown away by lies and deception. Now five years later they are working on a new movie together. But will the hurt and lies come out in time for these two people to believe in each other?
