A Body to Die For by Kate White was such a fun second book to the Bailey Weggins series! It was shorter than If Looks Could Kill and more concise, but still had the trademark descriptions that I have come to love White for. "In the mirror I noticed that my face was flushed. Nothing serious, just the same degree of red you'd see on someone who'd been scorched by a blowtorch or was in the throes of scarlet fever." How can I not love descriptions like that?
White is seriously the best at casting suspicion on all the characters in her books. I always think I have it figured out and then BAM it's who I'm least expecting. I also like that you don't find out who the killer is until the very end. There is so much buildup, and I just love that about this series so far.
There was a tiny bit of steam but less than book one had, and this time the setting wasn't New York City which was a nice change of pace. Bailey still totally reminds me of a Carrie Bradshaw type though, and I just love her character. Smart-ass comments and wit always make me laugh, and she's super relatable as a person too. She's not a good actress and when you put yourself into precarious situations like she does things get a little dicey! She's like the perfect combination of Carrie and Nancy Drew and I've loved the references to Nancy Drew in the books!
Final Thought: Overall this was another win for me in the Kate White department. I realized recently that I read one of her books a couple years ago and didn't love it, but I'm really enjoying this series and I'm so happy I have six more books to look forward to. Plus she’s still writing them so that’s a win for me! If you like mysteries that are a little more old-school with a journalist sleuthing and some steam thrown in, then you need to check this series out ASAP!

I just recently discovered this series of 'Bailey Weggins' mysteries, this book being number two. I absolutely LOVED this series. It is a light mystery read and this suited me just fine as I grew a little tired of some of the over the top, extremely graphic murder mysteries I had been reading. One critic describes this series as "Nancy Drew meets Sex and The City" and I fully agree. This series has a refreshing, contemporary feel with a murder mystery thrown in. I enjoyed Bailey's sharp, sarcastic wit, not often seen with most protagonists. I also appreciated the way the bit of 'romance' in the series was written. Rather than that soppy, ridiculous--we just met on page 10 and on page 50, you profess your undying love---this series deals with romance in a far more mature and realistic way. Hence, the Sex and The City comparison. Growing up, I devoured the Nancy Drew series, and maybe that is another reason I am so crazy for this series.It was like going home again, a blast from the past, a huge part of my mid-childhood. I just finished the last book in this series--Lethally Blonde--and I feel as if I have just finished a GREAT meal, and now been told there is no dessert. I highly recommend this series to anyone who is in the mood for a lighter mystery, and anyone who grew up reading and loving Nancy Drew, a little cheesy dialogue and all.(less)

I don't think the author could decide whether she wanted this to be a Sue Grafton mystery or a Meg Cabot mystery, so instead, she settled for the worst of both worlds: two dimensional characters that run around like recently decapitated chickens, and a middle-aged main character with the emotional maturity of a high school girl.
The blurbs on the back of the book said that the main character, Bailey Weggins, was down-to-earth, and self-deprecating, which is ironic, considering that she spent most of the book insulting OTHER people with ad hominems similar to those one might find in a novel by Ann Coulter.
Okay, so maybe I'm bitter, but I'm really, really glad I didn't pay full price for this book.

A very entitled woman goes to a spa, and finds a dead body. The sleuth was unpleasant, I almost didn't finish it.

kate white's fluffy but oddly thrilling bailey weggins mysteries are my new favorite books to read. they are the perfect weight to hold in one hand while walking around a screaming infant and singing "The Alphabet Dirge".
i wish i were joking about that last bit.
these books are easily digestible, well-paced, and fun. they require minimal effort to read and the picture falls into place in a way that is predictable, yet satisfying.
my biggest problems with the series are:
1. bailey is sort of a slut. look, i was single once upon a time ago, and i get that people aren't always monogamous. but this girl will literally have sex with one guy and then start fantasizing about another the minute the first is out of sight. i enjoy a good romance-side-plot in my mysteries, but it's a bit much.
2. the killers are also fairly predictable - the reason it works is because the motives are not always apparently clear. you will probably never be "shocked" by the end of the book (instead, more likely, you'll have "a feeling" about some characters in particular and then realize you're right about 25-75 pages before bailey does).
3. bailey knows EVERYBODY. she always has a friend who can tell her something useful to the plot but in a generic way (it reminds me of stanley kowalski in "streetcar" who always knows someone - a banker, accountant, lawyer, etc.)
4. there's no fucking way bailey would not know what a "happy ending massage" is. i'm sorry, there just isn't. she works for a glam mag in new york. it would not take a gay septuagenarian to point out that sometimes, just sometimes, massage therapists give a little additional release. and there's no way someone who has had as much sex as she purports to have had would need to call a detective/policeman to find out what "full service" means.
3.5 stars for another jolly good time.

I like this series! I like the lead character Bailey Weggins including her vehicle of choice (Jeep). I'm not sure why I missed Book 2 as I've read Book 1, 3, and 4 but I knew that I wanted to go back and read the story missed and I'm glad I did. I don't want to miss any of Bailey's adventures and/or sleuthing.
Bailey Weggins is still working as a contributing editor for Gloss magazine and an assignment isn't due until next Friday so it seems the perfect time to enjoy a little R&R at the Cedar Inn and Spa owned by Danielle (aka Danny) Hubner, one of her Mom's college girlfriends. Bailey’s own friendship with Danny began after the death of Bailey’s father when Bailey was only 12. Bailey’s Mom was struggling with her own grief and at times it was hard to comfort her daughter too. Danny has been inviting Bailey to visit the spa ever since she opened it about 3-4 years ago but with Bailey’s work commitments and trying to recover from her own short-lived marriage it was easy to put off acceptance of the invitation. But those of us who know Bailey also know that a weekend away may bring either the encounter of a new love interest or a new story related to crime or both.
Bailey is a natural sleuth not only with her experience that began as a crime writer for a newspaper in the 10 years after college but also as she’s a natural at asking questions. Her questions often put her in more danger than she realizes until she has more pieces of the puzzle or mystery of the crime. There are usually some handsome men during her sleuthing expeditions – either ex-boyfriends or ex-connections from previous cases or new possibilities.
I also love the 70-year old neighbor, Landon who lives across the hall from Bailey as he’s a good listener who sometimes cooks for Bailey and sometimes they enjoy each other’s company at a local restaurant. Landon reminds me of Henry, landlord and neighbor of Kinsey Millhone who was not only a terrific baker but often invited Kinsey to dinner in his home or they shared a meal together at the neighborhood tavern owned by Henry’s sister Rosie.
Time for me to read Book 5. I simply can't wait to spend more time with Bailey!

Fast paced easy to read murder mystery with a likeable amateur sleuth.

Unfortunately this book was a miss for me. Honestly, I skim read from the halfway point to the near end.
After the initial part of the plot was underway, I lost interest and it became rather amateur and cliched to me. I figured out who committed the crime early on, which is unusual for me, and I did not care for the romance whatsoever. It was just all kinds of wrong and I was surprised that such an intelligent woman, writer and investigator was unable to see that this man she was committing herself to was a player. It was outdated and rather insulting and offensive.
Some of the dialogue felt dated and immature, thus making the feel of the novel as a whole, unrealistic. I enjoyed the first book in the series, as well as the latest, and since I own the next two books I’ll give them a chance to see if it was just this particular book that didn’t work for me. But in a world that is inundated with crime fiction offerings, one can be rather selective in reading choices and as far as this one goes, I believe there are better options available.

A Body to Die For by Kate White is a well written mystery that takes place in a spa. The characters are well developed, likeable and interesting. The main female character is a perfect example of why the book was interesting. It is a true page turner as I finished this novel in one day. My neighbour recommended this book because one of victims’ last name was Gianelli. I just had to read it and was not disappointed! Will look forward to reading more books by Kate White.

I’m loving Bailey and all she gets herself into! The middle of the book did kind of drag but I think that’s because I wasn’t connecting to some of the random thrown in characters. Who done it was definitely a shock and I had thought a few people before actually finding out who it was.

I quite enjoyed Kate Walsh's narration of the book. I didn't read book 1, but I didn't feel like I was missing out on any pertinent information here. This moved a decent pace and kept me guessing early on as to who was behind the murder. I'd read others in the series as I figure they would also be serviceable and a bit fun with a decent mystery.

The second Bailey Weggins, and a fun read!!!
There's only so many times I can gush about the fun Bailey Weggins series, but I suppose if I'm reviewing, its as good a place to gush as any! Bailey Weggins is a fictional true crime writer in New York City, who routinely finds herself in the middle of a murder scene, and uses her keen journalistic skills and brain to help solve the mystery. I've heard the Bailey Weggins books described as Sex and the City meets Nancy Drew, and its very accurate!
Some readers don't respond as well to these books. There are lots of comments made about fashion and appearances. I like these, but they certainly throw back to a YA type style, though these books are certainly not YA. I love the descriptors, and I've always been a magazine reader--these felt right in line with other things I've read and enjoyed in the past.

Bailey has had a rough few months in our previous book, and she is ready to get out of NYC for a few days. An old friend of her mother's that she is fond of invites Bailey up to rural Massachusetts for a stay at her Cedar Inn hotel and luxury spa. The hotel is nestled in the woods and has cute coming out the wazoo. Bailey can't imagine anything better than a relaxing weekend at an Asian-inspired, tranquil spa, and she wants to see her mom's friend. She has worried that she sounded stressed on the phone, and she was always there for Bailey after her mom died.
But, when Bailey is settled into the spa and enjoying the soothing decor, she literally stumbles across a dead body wrapped in spa mud wrappers in a treatment room. As Bailey is thrust into another mystery, she must abandon her plans for a soothing weekend away. If she wants to be there to support her friend, she'll have to be careful. There's a murderer on site, and the list of suspects is growing by the hour. The worst part is, there's a good chance the murderer may have been another employee at the spa!
Bailey chases down leads and uses her guest status to get close to the other Spa staff, in an attempt to find out clues about how the victim ended up dead. But Bailey needs to move quickly, before she becomes the next target!

This is a fun read. Kate White is my go-to author when I'm in a reading slump. Her books are fun, snappy, and move quickly. The perfect read for when a more serious, slow-building book may not capture my attention. I recommend this book to fans of mysteries with a serving of chick-lit. I'd almost verge on classifying this series on the brink of a cozy mystery, though there are some notable differences as well. It does have that non-law enforcement heroine-turned-detective that cozy mysteries often showcase. And her free-lance writing career makes Bailey the perfect person to chase down leads.

This audio book is just plain fun. Bailey Weggins is a funny, hardedged (but vulnerable) detective heroine who won’t mind her own business. That’s the premise of all kinds of other female detectives I can think of – Sue Grafton, P.D. James, Elizabeth Peters, Anne Perry – to name just a few – all dream up this kind of heroine.
How is Bailey different? I like her comic side, her can’t-resist-bad-men ways. Or are they bad? We’ve got two romantic guys here, Beck (the gorgeous, kiss-me-hard cop) and Jack (what was he up to last summer?). Which one will she choose?
Kate Walsh does a good job reading the story. She distinguishes well between the different voices; sometimes the dialogue comes out as melodrama, but even then, it’s fun melodrama.
I often enjoy “spa” tales. A friend of mine wrote a very, very funny spa tale. This one captures the close-on morbidity of spas. What’s the difference between mud wraps and mummification? What’s the borderline between muscle stimulation and sexual stimulation?
I enjoyed this light, entertaining tale and hope to listen to (or read) some more Kate White soon.
How is Bailey different? I like her comic side, her can’t-resist-bad-men ways. Or are they bad? We’ve got two romantic guys here, Beck (the gorgeous, kiss-me-hard cop) and Jack (what was he up to last summer?). Which one will she choose?
Kate Walsh does a good job reading the story. She distinguishes well between the different voices; sometimes the dialogue comes out as melodrama, but even then, it’s fun melodrama.

Bisa bintang 4 atau lebih seandainya si Bailey ga terlalu ngasihanin dirinya sendiri dan bingung ngga jelas milih siapa pasangan hidupnya. BTW, ngikik juga baca review yang bilang "romancenya dikit" dll. Ya elah ini kan cozy mystery tuh genrenya, dimana romance emang bukan fokus utama. Wahai pembaca romance, kalian itu mbok ya jangan sempit gitu ah pikirannya. Romance dikit bukan berarti ceritanya jelak juga -_-"
Salah satu aspek yang bikin ngurangin bintang adalah pace ceritanya yang lemooot dan Bailey muter - muter ngga jelas, bingung nyari pembunuhnya siapa. Tapi disini juga yang jadi keuntungan buku ini, karena pembunuhnya bener - bener di luar dugaan , dimana semua teori Bailey malah jadi mentah. Siapa dia? Well kudu baca bukunya dong :D
Sayangnya lagi, GPU ini emang suka deh nerbitin buku ngga lengkap. Udah yang diterbitin buku ketiga duluan (Till Death Do Us Apart - Sampai Maut Memisahkan Kita), buku yang pertama, If Looks Could Kill malah ngga diterbitin. Belum lagi terjemahannya yang bikin kepala rada senut - senut. Untungnya sih, beli ini murah banget, cuma 10ribu rupiah. Jadi ga rugi - rugi amat lah ya :D

I simply love reading the Bailey Weggins mystery novels by Kate White. "A Body to Die For" is the third book I've read by this talented author, and second in the Bailey Weggins series. Ms. White keeps me guessing and changing my mind nearly every page and the ending is always a delightful surprise. Can't wait to read the next book in the series, "Til Death Do Us Part"!

The lives of the rich would not be complete without Spa Days. Who would not wish to spend a day filled with soothing massages, manicures, pedicures, even perhaps a seaweed wrap? All the luxurious temptations are here in White's second installment of the Bailey Weggins Mystery series.
Bailey needs a break. Still recovering from the adventure in book 1, she is also disheartened by possibly being dumped by her new man. Drawn and tired, she jumps at the chance for a free weekend at an elegant B & B located in Massachusetts. White is clever, by changing the location and most of the cast of characters, the reader can focus on getting to know Bailey. It doesn't take long for the sleuthing to begin. The day she arrives she indulges in an Asian inspired massage. Followed shortly by discovering a body wrapped like a mummy in one of the spa rooms. The game's a foot.
The B & B owner is a friend of her mother and considered to be an honorary aunt. Bailey willingly investigates. She is distracted by a dishy homicide detective who is tall dark and complex. Will he replace the missing Jack? Bailey's investigation uncovers a sleazy operation that is operating under the nose of the B & B owner. Will the next dead person prove the villainy is done in-house?
White's careful plotting keeps the reader guessing.
This is still early on in White's mystery career, and her character's are still a bit one dimensional.
The spa trends have changed over time, however the treatments described are sill interesting.
Still a good read for mystery fans. Recommended

I wasn’t fond of this novel at all. It seemed fluffed and lost at times; adding too much detail on aspects that don’t play into the plot or help further the knowldge of the reader. It was an almost painful slow read hoping the next page added SOME substance but instead, more useless facts like the mylar. She put way too much emphasis on the mylar to be almost dismissive as to why Detective Beck did it — with the preconceived thought of he wanted Anna to feel as if she was suffocating too. That’d be valid if she wasn’t already dead when he put the mylar on so it was jusf ridiculous to focus on such an irrelevant factor. I also discovered a massive FLAW in the novel. On page 170 Detectice Beck and Bailey go out on their date. He drops her off and said, “I’ll wait till you get inside.” (To drive away) then he kisses her and as she closes the door he guns the engine and takes off, not waiting for her to get inside safelt. Well fast forward to their second ‘date’ on page 213, from Bailey’s perspective, “but just as he had the other night, he waited unril I was inside the inn before zooming away.” He did not wait for homegirl to get inside the first date. If that was Kate White’s attempt at sarcasm it was a fail. Or I just discovered inaccuracies. Either way, not my liking.

3.5 stars. I enjoy the Bailey Weggins mystery series because they are kind of a "fluffy" mystery. Bailey is a writer that freelances for a few different magazines in New York City, but tends to prefer the true crime stories. Especially stories where she can dig in a become the amateur detective. She always seems to find trouble and always wants to find romance in her life. She's a smart, chic character that often does some dumb things that make you roll your eyes. This book is no exception...
In A Body to Die For, Bailey finds herself embedded in the investigation of a murder when she stays at her mom's friends lodge and discovers one of the spa therapists dead. Bailey cannot stop herself from wanting to find out who did it and uses her journalist investigative techniques to find out more about the victim and her 'secret' life. A fun, cute mystery!

Surprisingly I love this book.
Biasanya gak suka dengan chick-lit, tapi ini cerita nya cukup menarik dan ringan, cuma ternyata ending nya itu yang bikin kaget, jadi boleh deh dikasi bintang 4.
Bailey Weggins, tokoh jagoan di cerita ini adalah jurnalis majalah wanita di New York, dan dia diundang oleh teman ibu nya ke spa milik nya.
Perjalanan yang seharusnya menyenangkan dan relax, berubah menjadi mimpi buruk karena salah satu staff di spa terbunuh dengan cara yang lumayan mengerikan.
Bailey ini seperti Nancy Drew yang mencoba memecahkan misteri pembunuhan, namun di situ dia bertemu dengan detektif Beck yang cukup membuat dia ketar-ketir.
Unsur chicklit untung nya tidak begitu kental, jadi ceritanya tetap terarah dengan pemecahan misteri pembunuhan ini.
Bacaan santai, namun cukup menyenagkan.

Part of my re-read of Kate White's novels during pregnancy and early motherhood! The second installment of White's Bailey Weggins series, and a fun addition that sweeps the reader both throughout New York City and into a spa where Bailey stumbles upon a dead body during what was supposed to be a weekend of R&R. White has a particular talent for creating setting, which is one of my favorite parts of thrillers, and helps fully immerse the reader in the story and create a sense of foreboding and atmosphere. The story progresses at a quick pace but without feeling rushed or like anything is missing. This one is especially good for evenings in a bubble bath with a mug of herbal tea and a rainstorm outside!

Audiobook specifics- the addition of the music near the end of a chapter is horrendously annoying. The narrator is very good.
I liked Bailey in book 1 even through her ridiculous and unbelievable musings about KC. On to book 2. I still pretty much like Bailey but good grief can we get past the lame and completely useless romances, booty calls, hookups or whatever that Bailey is subjected to? They read like a teen crush and don’t fit the characters age at all. We also get no insight as to why she’s attracted to or interested in a relationship with any of the men except that they are good looking. Come on.
Other than that the mysteries are decent if a bit on the lightweight side, but a decent read.

Bailey est journaliste dans un magazine féminin new-yorkais. Elle part dans un hôtel tenu par une amie de sa mère pour profiter du spa, se ressourcer après des déboires amoureux.
Une des masseuses est assassinée et Bailey décide de mener l'enquête, pour aider son amie.
Entre fausses pistes et menaces, nous suivons l'avancée de l'enquête, que j'ai bien aimé. Par contre, je regrette que la vie sentimentale de Bailey soit sur le même schéma quand dans le tome 1.
J'espère que cela sera différent dans le tome 3.
La lecture est sympa, mais pour moi, dans le même style, je préfère la série de Kyra Davis (Série : Sophie Katz) ou celle de Janet Evanovich (Série Stephanie Plum)

Between 2 and 3. It is actually an enjoyable read. However, too much details tend to cloud the issue. And the ending is just meh, too abrupt. In a way, it is true, this is like a Nancy Drew mystery. Light and sometimes fun and it can be shallow at times. I think the issue with Mylar thing is way too much, the culprit could have done it differently, I suppose. But I guess the usage of Mylar is meant to be shocking and frightening.

This is the second in the series featuring Bailey Weggins, journalist and investigator. In this book Bailey is asked to go to the Cedar Inn Spa and help a family friend who owns the spa. It was nice to get Bailey out of New York City for a change. However, she discovers a dead body wrapped in mylar in one of the rooms in the spa and interferes with the investigation of course. This is another good entry in this series and I will keep reading the adventures of Bailey.

I didnt know it was part of a three book series with Bailey as the main character and as much as she annoyed me whenever she was investigating she’s just like me… and Bella Swan if she was raised in NY. I loved this book more than I thought I would and although I think the romance part with Jack would’ve been better and I was hoping Beck wasnt the killer so he & Bailey could end up together it was like a SATC episode gone bad! but in a good way.

This, the second book in the Bailey Weggins series, was a big improvement over Kate White's first book. There is more dialogue, shorter paragraphs and the story flowed smoothly. Bailey is a unique character who never takes advice and always gets into trouble because of that. Kind of like real life, eh?
