Purification

Whilst battling with depression, Lör K wrote their thoughts down on paper. This is the poem created over a period of a rough few weeks in which they hit their lowest and slowly dragged themselves back out of it, purifying themselves of their ghosts.

damn.

this teeny tiny book of poetry has stared straight into my soul.

my rating is undoubtedly influenced by the fact that i have been in literally the exact same position as the poet so every word was reaching into my heart and the poignancy was increased a hundred times because of this.

personal similarities aside, i really enjoyed the writing style, which was modern without being artificially or pretentiously so. the missing fifth star is due to what is probably just my taste, as i like flowery and allegory-laden poetry a la the Romantics, which this wasn't, but some people don't like that kind of thing. so yeah, taste. as i've mentioned on a previous poetry review, i find poetry hard to review because it is so subjective and based on the reader's preferences and whims.

but i can say one thing with certainty: Lör K is a gifted writer, and i'll definitely be keeping an eye out on what they publish next.

and so should you.

This poem is realistically presented.

I am mostly saying this about the theme of the poem. This poem nicely depicts that when one is depressed they do not always come out and ask for help. It is the closest poeple of the depressesd person who can help them, as in this poem that closest person is the mother of the poet.

But, the deperssed persons have to be willing to help themselves by accepting the help when it comes.

I'm gonna be honest here. I've been sat here for a good 15 minutes now, contemplating how I am going to review this.
One the one hand, I could be very critical and talk about how the writing style wasn't really my cup of tea, as it felt like it was somewhere in-between colloquial and poetical and I missed the beauty the language could have. I personally am more into poetry that isn't so straightforward and easy to decipher. I did like the personifications of the 'monsters' in this. I thought the 'monsters' were very well-written and they each portrayed one of the struggles of the narrator.

As for the plot, if you can even call it that in 12 pages, I found it a bit unrealistic how sudden the narrator switched from depression to recovery. I know from personal experience that it's not a linear process and you can't go from severe depression to feeling liberated and in a sense happy, in a matter of like, a day.
Maybe it did actually happen like that for the author, so I'm not going to be too judgemental about that.

On the other hand, I liked how honest this was. I, myself, could relate to the narrator a lot and I more or less deal with the same struggles, so it was nice to have someone else express the things I am feeling too, and I couldn't have a better job myself.

Poetry is a written expression of emotions that need a voice. It is also a channel through which one can vent and afterwards feel more purposeful and accomplished because one is able to transform negativity into the beautiful art of poetry. This is what I think of Lor K's work... a truly honest, hauntingly beautiful expression of emotions. And what I loved was the positive end to it... motivating others who have similar experiences with depression, that they can move forward... that there is hope of putting into captivity negative emotions and live life again.
