In the Ruins

Rate this book
All’s fair in love and war, but only if you cheat.

Captain Jamie Callahan and Staff Sergeant Kyle Brannigan know the Metahuman Defense Force frowns on fraternization, but being together is worth the risk. When an Alpha Team mission requires Jamie and Kyle to fake a very real relationship in order to infiltrate a criminal alliance, Jamie understands it won’t be easy. To ensure the mission is a success, he’ll have to put his family’s name on the line to play the role of an estranged billionaire’s son, discharged from the military, looking to make his own shady business deals.

Except the target this time is no ordinary businessman, and the bargain being made is a problem for everyone. Surrounded by the enemy on foreign soil, Jamie and Kyle must trust each other now more than ever. Their covers—and the life they’re trying to build together outside the political spotlight—depend on it.

The Audiobook is perfection

The story is still entertaining.

**********************************************************

I Loved it! Loved, Loved it.

description

“Fuck, baby, I’ve missed you on your knees,” Jamie said, sliding in deep, wanting to feel Kyle’s lips pressed against his body.

description

Well hot damn! This book was amazing! I enjoyed every word.

In this the MDF team travel to London for a mission, and let’s just say, the action part was All Marvel movies on crack. The world building in this series is perfect; I could picture every scene, without getting confused.

description

I loved

-Kyle and Jamie’s relationship growth, it was evident the chemistry oozing off the pages. There were tender moments between them that had me like awww! And Jamie’s possessiveness did something to my body.

“Say it, Kyle. I want to hear you say it.”
“Yours,” Kyle moaned, his voice breaking as he came. “I’m yours.”

- The action, I enjoyed this part a lot, I have watched every superhero movie known to man, and I do it for the action, and this book did not disappoint, I was on the edge of my seat.

-Liam I loved him, and glad he was Jamie’s friend. I hope to see more of him in future, since I was reading his parts with a British Accent. It sounded good in my head.

-The whole team, I love their dynamics, togetherness and how they support each other. The women are bad-ass!

-The SEX! The Freaking Damn! SEX! Oh dear Lord this author knows how to write sex scenes. I was squirming in my seat, clearly not to be read in public. They were detailed, hot! Engaging and Kyle and Jaime’s chemistry made them more enjoyable.

Jamie sank down on top of him and Kyle spread his legs, letting Jamie settle into the cradle of his hips. Kyle slid his hands up Jamie’s back, curling them over his shoulders to hold the other man close.
“If I knew you’d be coming back early, I would’ve gotten wet and ready,” Kyle said when Jamie finally broke their kiss.
Jamie nosed over his jaw, trailing a line of open-mouthed kisses down his throat. “I never mind getting you ready.”

description

-Alexei the love of my life, I loved every second his was on page. And Sean I am so glad their book is out.

If you haven’t read the series:

I’m just here to tell you (amongst the many other reviews singing this series’ praises) that this is seriously good stuff.

This is military romantic suspense with plenty of kick assery and a full supporting cast that is starting to bloom quite nicely. Add a scifi bent towards a futuristic dystopic AU at the mercy of chemical terrorism, and this is the perfect mix of several genres that I love to indulge in!

Turner is slowly gaining impressive points. This second installment sets up the rest of the series, as she puts into play a story arc that will be long and complex. I’m already invested in seeing how this pans out with the very high risks, and even higher stakes, that this Metahuman team will most likely face as they lay everything on the line (especially Jamie and Kyle) to basically, save the world.

Overall, this has it all. Drama, action, feels, intensity, and some very good romance. The sex may be a tad bit gratuitous but it’s hot and explicit gratuitous-ness. For sure, Jaime, Kyle, and company will have many challenges and obstacles ahead of them, and I look forward to the nail biting situations as Turner will no doubt put them through their paces!

After reading book 1 not too long ago, I could not wait jumping into this one. This series marks my first time,  into the world of Sci-fi, and even though I have seen some awesome sci-fi movies in my life......reading this genre somehow never happend. Thank you Hailey Turner for opening my eyes to a whole new (book) world :P

Cd7ovXd.gif (400×240)

First off, these books should not be read as stand alones, this is a series and if you want to read book 2, you will have to start with book 1 "In the Wreckage", which was also awesome !!

tumblr_lkdxkvZqdK1qb0wfxo1_1280.jpg (567×340):

Those of you who have read book 1, already know all about Metahumans, what they are and how they came to be. For those of you who haven't...I will quote my own review of book 1....

"Metahumans are humans, that have been exposed to Splice, a certain chemical that is supposed to kill everyone who comes in contact with it. Somehow, certain people are able to survive this chemical, instead of getting killed, they turn into a some sort of super human with super powers."

Like I said in my review of book 1......it's like a cross between "Thirds" and "X-Men".

Jamie and Kyle got together in book 1 and so far, 6 months later, they are still going strong.

348e4efa63e28d9fc85487aee219904b.jpg (236×354):    47ca64eefe11eb2c63c887015944b4e8.jpg (236×330):

The only problem they have, as far as their relationship goes, is that Jamie is Kyle's superior and therefore, the two of them are breaking the Metahuman Defense Force fraternazation rule. Neither of them is ready to give up their job, so keeping things a secret is the only way to go.

"I don't regret a single decision I've made when it comes to you. Maybe it's not the right decision from a command point of view, but I'm not willing to give you up"

e45043f2cadff4b163b2c99827bf7fbf.jpg (500×420):

When the team goes on a new mission, and Jamie and Kyle have to "pretend" to be a couple, both men come to realize what they are missing..... Kyle also comes face with the fact that he and Jamie are from very different worlds, which causes some selfdoubt on his part.

Their feelings for each other, get stronger every day.....how much longer will they be able to keep going on like this.

tumblr_lpoo4tfP7y1qeyu8fo1_500.gif (500×212)

I am not going into the plot more than this. I want everyone to enjoy this book without any major spoilers. I will say though, for those who are wondering, that these boys are still very very HOT together....and a bit kinky....

"Some days I can't get enough of how much you like getting fucked."

tumblr_nxubp3zx8m1te42yzo1_500.gif (500×255)

As much as I loved Jamie and Kyle, this book isn't just about the two of them. It's about their whole team....and what an awesome team this is. They are like a family.  There is also an introduction to a MDF member we haven't met before and I have high hopes, that he will be a part of this little family in the future. I also would really like to have a story about Alexei, because he has been one of my favorites since book 1. Fingers crossed :P

JS_FingersCrossed.gif (256×256)

This book ends on a HFN, so I am pretty sure, there will be more about Jamie and Kyle in the near future.  Hopefully, the wait won't be too long.

I one clicked that baby!! MINE!!! Thank goodness, I added myself to Hailey Turner’s mailing list because we all know Amazon is not good with sending timely notifications.

Loved it! Great world building, lots of action, steamy sexy times, and a diverse cast of characters. The perfect combination for a very entertaining and captivating read.

Hailey Turner has done a terrific job creating this universe and with "In the Ruins", the second installment of the  Metahumans Files, she achieves something incredible: maintain the reader interested in her amazing world. Well, not really. We are not talking here about just keep the interest of the reader. Probably the terrific plot and the characters development makes book 2 better than "In the Wreckage". This is another gem and a very shiny one, I must say.

In the Ruins starts a few moths after the last scene in book one, and directly into action.

Our heroes has been together nearly seven months and still hiding their relationship. In this book we have the chance to witness how their physical connexion develops in something bigger, sweeter, deeper. And the intimacy between them?

The plot in this second book is an under cover mission, using our incredible and wealthy guy... oh, please, Wait... this description sucks, I should say Jaime is incredible, wealthy, loyal, unselfish, bossy in bed, awesome as team leader and absolutely generous with their friends. He is such a good guy, not just a rich, honorable and hot  man. And I love him!

"Because my life -my privileged, stupid life, Katie- shoulden´t be worth more than the hundreds of people who are being used as test subjects and killed by criminals who won´t stop even if I do"

And I have to say the plot and the mission itself are brilliantly constructed and developed. It's not just science fiction, this book has a great dose of thriller and a fantastic espionage basis. I really enjoyed the story line.

The other side of this undercover mission, the love story part, Kyle's insecurities... I don't want to say anything about it. You must read this book! That's the way you should find out how perfect this story is. Well, first you have to start with "In the Wreckage" since this series can't be conceived as standalone novels. And after that, enjoy this second and great installment. These books are amazing!

I have to do a special mention here since I didn't in my review of book one: The girls in the alpha team are fantastic. They are funny, brave, bad-ass and really smart. Yes, they are! And they were that smart before become Metahumans, it's not a superpower, promise! ;) (read the sentence with all the irony it's charged with)

It's refreshing to read some great female characters in MM books and I really loved the interactions among the team. Male and female. The characters are perfectly delimited and deep enough to make the reader care about them. In fact, I wouldn't mind to read about Alexei a little more. He speaks English like I do, high five Alexei!

The bets, the banter, the funny dialogues, the deep ones... Everything Alpha Team related is terrific. All of it is super entertaining. And the new additions are awesome too and I want more... Everyone is going to want more... I have no doubt.

The way Hailey Turner describes this futuristic society is very appealing and addictive.
This is scifi suspense at its best. A highly recommend book for all those readers who enjoys action, great dialogues, some good thriller and smocking hot characters.

In the Ruins is a fun, exhilarating and seriously sexy sophomore offering in this futuristically set sci-fi romance series, featuring strong military themes and plenty of kick-ass characters fighting to save the world with their enhanced powers.

Featuring double the action and excitement, and with enough character and relationship growth to make things more interesting, this sequel outranked its predecessor (In the Wreckage) in terms of plot and romance.

Jamie and Kyle are undoubtedly an entertaining couple to follow. They continually push the limits in their relationship, in and out of the bedroom, and their slowly evolving feelings for one another are so perfect that I have not one complaint where they are concerned as a pair.

In the last book I complained a bit about the overly lengthy sex scenes, however hot, but here, the bedroom time was substantially less—still hot-as-sin sexy in the scenes we do get, but thankfully not as overwhelming or abundant in quantity and length as the first time around. This leads me to believe that the pacing of this sequel is much better, balancing the sexy-times and the key relationship moments perfectly with the unfolding undercover mission plot and all the action sequences scattered throughout.

This story is very high-stakes and it’s nicely building towards what I’m expecting to be some really big, thrilling and heart-poundingly exciting moments in future books.

I love the plot and I love the futuristic world-building, but it’s in the close-knit ensemble cast of characters that remains my favourite element of the series so far. I love all the members of Jamie and Kyle’s Alpha Team, particularly appreciating the exceptionally badass female characters, lead by Jamie’s right-hand woman and telepath extraordinaire Katie. I love a cast that feel like family and I love strong representations of female characters in M/M romance so this one ticked a lot of my boxes.

This whole story works a treat for my personal tastes and trope favourites, and at this point I'm really excited to read on!

I am seriously loving this series. This follow-up to In the Wreckage did not disappoint. And I was one happy girl that this one was half the length of book 1. :)

Once again, this was the perfect mix of romance and suspense.

Definitely not too "sci-fi-y".

And still plenty scorching despite the shorter length (though it still clocks in at just under 5000 locations).

I really love the dynamics between the team. And especially the new addition to the team, Sean. I sense something possibly brewing between him and Alexei which has me really excited.

No cliffhanger ending, but it's definitely not the end for Jamie and Kyle. Can't wait to see where things go in the next book.

I’m in the minority here : a trip to the box of shame, maybe ?
Book 2 of the “Metahuman files” series : not a standalone. It’s a sci-fi action suspense with a romantic element.

The set up : a futuristic world with a virus running around, deadly for most humans, but for only a few who become “metahumans”, meaning humans with extraordinary powers (telepathy, healing, enhanced strength, ….). These Metahumans are either civilians, a few part of criminal organisations or part of special elite and secret military units. Jamie is the captain of the military US team and so the boss of Kyle, his lover despite the “non-fraternization” rule. And they have to deal with a new mission : locating and destroying the secret labs where researches are made to create this deadly virus for criminal purposes.

What I liked : the universe built, the plot in general, the Metahuman team with kick-ass female characters. And there is some emotion building in this book and it made the time spent between Jamie and Kyle really HAWT.
What didn’t work for me : the execution of the plot seemed too far-fetched for me, up to a stage I couldn’t overlooked it anymore. A lot of what happened didn’t make sense for me. As it’s very action-oriented, it didn’t work for me.

Still, I give it 3 stars for all I liked…just don’t know if I will keep going on.

Another great BR with Josy and Simone as our best stalker : thank you both for spending some time with me !!

The first book in this series pretty much blew me away. Metahumans and military novels are not usually my thing, so I was surprised how much I liked the story line. Yes, Jamie and Kyle (two of the hottest MCs around!) helped a lot, but the plot itself was very well put together.

Book 2 throws us straight into action and the MDF’s continuing fight against organizations who threaten the balance of power in the world. As I didn’t reread book 1 before this one, I was pleased (and relieved) to find that the author takes the time to remind us who is who and does what on the team at the beginning.
(Please be also advised that there is a VERY helpful glossary at the end of the book where all acronyms are explained and a short summary of characters is given!

I loved the London setting, and the way the author describes it.

The Victoria and Albert Museum:

And then it is mission ‘all go’. A mission which involves Jamie and Kyle ‘pretending’ to be a couple. Which is not exactly a hardship for either man because they’ve been together for seven months now, and it pretty obvious (to us at least) that what they have has evolved far far beyond the purely physical.

Not that the sex is any less hot than in book 1. That scene at almost midway certainly had my kindle smoldering (not even mentioning what it did to my poor heart *g*). There can be no doubt that Hailey Turner understands how to put the heat on. And keep it sizzling. On full throttle.

But Jamie and Kyle’s compatibility goes way further. I loved the way they support each other, turn to each other when they need it and how each man looks after the other. These ‘softer’ moments between them are simply swoon-worthy. Nothing like badass guys showing their gooey centre!

Jamie: ”You are all I need. Like this. Don’t want anyone else…. I only want you.”
Kyle was everything he never knew he wanted, much less needed.

Kyle: ”But when you look at me like how you are right now, I think – none of that shit matters. Because I know I’m good for you, the same way you’re good for me, and fuck anyone who says otherwise.”

So, there IS relationship development and I enjoyed every second of it, although I have to say that I felt it was overshadowed a bit by the thriller plot. I could certainly have done with a bigger helping of Jamie and Kyle all around.

Of course, there are some other hick-ups along the way, too.
For Jamie they come mainly in the form of his family, particularly his unreasonable father. It beats me why Richard can’t accept Jamie (For God's sake, the man is a hero!) and what he does with his life. Is it really concern or just selfishness, I wonder.

Kyle, on the other hand, is facing Jamie’s world, the one of the filthy rich, for the first time, which raises questions how they can possibly ‘fit’, coming from such different social backgrounds. Although this stirs some ripples in their relationship they never turn into full-sized waves, on the contrary we get some great banter and one particularly amusing scene when the boys go suit shopping.

All in all, minor problems with military talk apart (no doubt my bad!), I enjoyed the second instalment of the story, loved Jamie and Kyle even a bit more, and can't wait to see how the series finishes!

Recommended.

So so good, I love this world building

For her follow up to the staggeringly good In the Wreckage, Hailey has crafted yet another brilliant mission led espionage thriller with a side order of romance.

The world building in these books is exemplary, set a few centuries into the future where metahumans are a real force to be reckoned with and there are many shady organisations desperately fighting for power in the secret behind the scenes murky underworld.

This is like X-Men meets Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy with a side order of The A Team only without a sense that anything has been cribbed or borrowed.

The series feels unique and fresh, the characters are fully developed with personalities to match and, in Jamie and Kyle, Hailey has created a red hot alpha pairing who continue to push at the boundaries of what's allowed within this military world.

Their love is powerful and their connection anchors the narrative of all the other plots built on top. I can't wait now to find out more and also see just what's going on with Kyle's adoptive brother Alexei and a certain ex CIA agent.

I'd review this now, but I have a stupid paper to write. Review to come!

~*~

*happy sigh* Jamie and Kyle got me like:

description

I was so happy that the steam level in this did not drop. When Jamie and Kyle had sex? Phew, it was scorching! Especially when . Also, we got to the "i love you" stage between these two and I'm happy it took this long for it to happen, which is about 8 or so months. Kyle was living with Jamie, not even trying to act like he wasn't, at the start of this, which is a big step and I was just riveted with their scenes together.

The only thing that made me take off half a star for this lovely book was the unnecessary descriptions or unnecessarily long descriptions at times. Most of the time, if not all the time, when a new character was introduced, we got like a paragraph or more describing how they looked and what they were wearing and their background - and just like, it made me start to pull out of the story at times, also at the times when it went on for paragraphs about the case. And it wasn't because the case wasn't interesting in this, it was really interesting and the climax at the end was crazy and engaging and had me riveted to the page. But having to read about this dude and this dude and that lady and trying to remember all their names meanwhile trying to keep together who wanted to bomb what place and what group was which and so on, at times it made me take a break from the story, which I didn't want to do with this one, because I love this series. Just...not so much description next time will help, I think. I'm not here to read about the interweaving craziness of all the criminals coming together and what all their plans are - not that we shouldn't know about it, just...we don't need to know paragraphs about it, is all I'm trying to say.

I mean, I'm mainly here for the romance and I'd rather have paragraphs focusing on the romance than the other stuff, honestly (and those are present, too. I just didn't need such long breaks between the romance at times. Even if its realistic, just give me even the small moments between Jamie and Kyle and I'm a happy camper. Which there were, small moments between them, just not enough. I'm greedy I guess haha)

Anywho, just more of a balance was needed in this one.

But I still loved it. I love all of the alpha team, I like that Jamie's sister had a bigger role in this one, and holy shit is Jamie's family filthy filthy fuckin' rich. We all knew they were rich, but we get an idea just how rich in this one. Like damn.

Also, uh, after Jamie and Kyle's story is over, will we get Alexei and Sean's? Because I was feeling some vibey vibes between those two, if ya know what i'm sayin' ;)

Anywho, this is still a strong follow up to the first one, and its definitely worth it to continue (and cannot be read as a standalone, because the plot in this directly correlates with the plot of the first). So, go read this! Please ;)

4.5 stars. Love this world and this team, and damn, Jamie and Kyle are as smoking hot as before. But it's not just sex anymore *if it ever really was* and that puts everything that's important to Jamie at risk. I love how Jamie feels about Kyle and how he never lets Kyle think any differently. And I love how he and Kyle just work together, in every way.

As usual from Hailey Turner, amazing world building, a terrific, exciting story and kickass characters that you can't help but care for.

I look forward to the rest of this series!

Well, if action-packed is your thing, this is the series for you. So far, it is full of bullets, fire and explosions. Some of it from weapons and some of it from Jamie and Kyle. These two are smoking hot! I finally got some tenderness that I was anxiously waiting for. I am a romance reader. I have to have some type of romance in my books. Book 1 skirted the edge for me but the insta-attraction pulled me through. I had to know what happened between these two so I was on to book 2. I got my wish in this one. I hear Alexei and Sean are even better so I'm off to book 3. I am definitely in binge mode with this series.

Dnf at 15%

I’ve been stuck at 15% of this book for three days now and by “stuck” I mean that I closed the book when the very first sex scene started, because I was bored out of my mind, and never found the will to go back to this story.
In the meantime, I’ve read another book, started a second and a little while ago decided to give this another try.
Like in the first book of the series, the sex scene is long, I mean really, really long...I tried to skip it, but I got bored of skipping it before I reached its end and around the same time I realized I couldn’t care less about the rest.
I might be mistaken, since I’m giving up very early, but so far it seems like this book has a lot of the same things I didn’t like in the first and what I like isn’t enough to keep me interested. I really wanted this series to work for me, but sometimes it just isn’t meant to be and there are so many other books out there I actually want to read that it seems silly to force myself to finish this or read the following books.

I'm going to make this short because I gotta find out what happens next!

I'll be the first to admit I had some issues with In the Wreckage but this was a BIG improvement for me. The action was great, the chemistry, not just between Kyle and Jaime but the whole MDF team, was fun, great secondary characters, snappy pacing, good worldbuilding with endearing relationship development between Jaime and Kyle and scorching hot sex! Prostate orgasm, prostate milking, multiple orgasms, rimming, rough and kinky sex, size difference with a very... bendy bottom, sex in a public restroom, creative use of a dildo...

I don't want to discount the action/suspense plot or anything but the sex and romance deserve a standing O! The connection that already existed between Kyle and Jaime strengthens over the course of In the Ruins as they go deep undercover in London and it warmed my heart. I like my romances with action and this struck the perfect balance.

The action plot carries over from In the Wreckage so I wouldn't recommend trying to read this as a standalone. I did like the action plot of this one better than the first though and I'm not really sure why. Maybe because they were undercover or maybe it was just that there was more of them working together against a common enemy? I don't know but I did think the plot was tighter than the first and I'm really looking forward to reading In the Shadows.

I think it could've done with a final proofing but nothing too egregious that pulled me out of the story. I will also caution those who don't like head hopping that there is a bit of that happening. I enjoyed this because it showed what happens to various team members during the good bits.

Recommend to fans of military, action/suspense and sci-fi romances.

Entertainment at its best!!!
Alpha Team was the bullet, even if someone else was pulling the trigger, and they couldn't ever escape that.

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/21/0c/98/210c98525b1efd22134f3937d37727a0.gif

Jamie Callahan's team of Metahumans with enhanced abilities - well, it spoils nothing to say that they have certain superpowers - has to keep that in mind when their new mission sends them undercover right in the public eye, so as to nose out a Russian terrorist group intent on preying on wealthy citizens with shady morals. Especially Jamie has to play both sides of the fence and gambles for high stakes since it is not only his reputation on the line, but also the one of those who are close to him. He is forced to walk a tightrope and has to rely on his team, other organizations and friends more than once to wriggle out of precarious situations in order not to compromise his family and still get the job done. The only thing that helps him staying in control is the fact that Kyle Brannigan, his secret lover, is also part of the cover and for once they don't have to hide their relationship in public, if only for show. When more players enter the game, there is more at stake than just his high renown and the whole team has to refer to all their resources and powers to hold the upper hand.

Wow, just wow! Hailey Turner did it again!!! After only the second installment to In the Wreckage, this series went straight onto my top-ten list of favorites and she proved to me that the first book was not just some kind of one-hit wonder. Not that I ever had any doubts about it, but still I'm glad to see that I was right.

This book and the whole series is so right up my alley and I don't even know where to start to explain why, so let's just say that the world building is so unique and well-conceived that I once again got totally engrossed in the story right from the beginning. On the one hand, I could not put my Kindle down and on the other hand, I had to read slowly in order not to miss anything important because of the complex storyline, right down to the last detail.

Another aspect that made me enjoy this book so much is the dynamics between each and every team member. No, scratch that, they are not only a team, they are family. The snark and banter made me laugh out loud, but when it comes down to it they stand up for each other no matter what and everyone has a role to play. An important role. In this story the team got a new addition in form of former CIA Agent Sean Delaney and boy, do I want to see more of him in the future!!! I daresay that he and a certain moody Russian team member - yes. Alexei, it is you I'm talking about - might become more than just colleagues, all animosity aside, and for me, some kind of enemies to lovers trope would spice up the story even more.

What I loved the most, though, was the development of Jamie and Kyle's love for each other. Their feelings are getting stronger and stronger by the minute and even if their mission reveals more and more the difference in their social background and raises some kind of self-doubt and misgivings about the continuation of their relationship, Jamie is determined to make it happen against all odds - against the non-fraternization policy of the organization they both are working for and against the outbreak of hostilities from the part of his family - and he always finds the right words to alleviate Kyle's qualms.

"I love you and I will always fight for you," Jamie told him, meaning it more than he'd ever meant anything in his life.

When I started to read the book I was prepared for all eventualities, meaning I stocked up on chocolate and coffee, committed my cat to cuddle duties (of course, he was over the hills and far away when I needed him) and had my notepad with the names and functions of all team members I wrote down while reading the first book at the ready, but I completely forgot about one thing: to retrieve the fan out of the basement. I should have known better! Damn, those sex scenes... The terms "hot and kinky" do not come anywhere close to describe them.
This is everything

The ending felt more like a HFN for Jamie and Kyle, but thank goodness, the next book is already in the works. I would love nothing better than to beg the author to hurry up because I so cannot wait to get back to this universe and see where the story goes from here, since the case is equally anything but solved. Highly recommended!

8/28/2021 reread. Hailey Turner has definitely grown as an author after this series. I enjoyed this book a little less than the first time due to slight repetitiveness but it was broken by Sean and Alexei's POVs which I appreciated. Overall, the story was good and I had good time and left my everyday worries behind for the evening. Goal achieved.

I lurved it sooo much. Hands down the best! The case they are on, the undercover aspect and the execution is awesome. All the subterfuge, the intrigue, leering and shooting was just one high quality read. The team are just hilarious - the snarky remarks, the jokes and the betting and how they have each other's six just shows that sometimes not only blood is your family that you can make your own. I had fun galore with these crazy wonderful metahumans.

Jamie and Kyle! Oh, Jamie and Kyle... *breathy sigh* I think the top of my head blew off somewhere in the middle of the book. So hot, erotic and s*e*x*y. They just lit the sheets on fire! It was a... pleasure to read for certain. Yeah.

The world building, the description of London and the mention of royals - this just keeps getting better and better. The fight and the gala were so detailed, so realistic, so full of feels and emotions - felt like I was right there. So good. And the glimpse into the world of swank and glitter was a cherry on the top. I highly recommend it!

Jamie and Kyle continue to wow us with their loyalty and devotion to each other. Even while things heat up in the political and criminal arenas, they find islands of space to love each other.

This is an intricate PNR romance full of action and suspense. Genre-wise it should land at the top of my favorites. Other than a couple of typos, the writing is intricate, fast-paced with well-defined characters. I simply can't put my finger on why these books are not pulling me in as they are other readers. I'm always on the outside looking in and haven't been able to emotionally connect with any character yet. But I don't know why. It's so frustrating. I feel like I'm missing something important.

Audio Review: 4.5 Stars

Is there an accent that Greg can't do? If so, I've yet to hear it.

Original Review 30Oct2017: 4.1 Stars

Just as gripping and interesting as the last one, but that ending was too bitter-sweet and tenuous.

I do so love all of the details that remind you this is set a couple hundred years in the future, but aren't so onerously different as to completely alienate the reader with a world we're not familiar or cannot relate to.

Still, definitely gonna read the next one!

In the Ruins is a sequel to In the Wreckage, and you're definitely going to want to listen to In the Wreckage before diving in to enjoying this, because these are not standalones.

This has a great story, interesting world building, plenty of action (both in and out of bed *winks*), and multiple points of view (including Kyle's brother Alexei and a new team member!). I'm going on record right now saying I love this cast of characters. LOVE THEM.

On top of the great story we have the wonderful narration by Greg Tremblay, under his sexier Greg Boudreaux brand. Greg makes sure the listener is able to easily follow along with the large cast of characters, and their accents, and all the action without getting lost and having to repeat sections. I mean, some of the sexy bits might be something you rewind - but you don't have to...if you know what I mean.

I can always tell how much I'm enjoying listening to an audiobook by how upset I am if I'm interrupted or forced to set the audio aside for several days, and the fact that I was so mad every time I had to pause In the Ruins means, for me, this was a terrific listen. The narration here makes a great story even better.

In the Ruins is a sci-fi, military, steamy romance with multiple POV and a HFN ending. I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series, In the Shadows and seeing Alexei get his man.

4.5 Stars - Recommended!

*** Year: 2285. Place: Earth. *** An undercover mission.
This is where this amazing series resumes, from the first book, IN THE WRECKAGE.
Sniper, Kyle
This new world is fabulous and we get our enhanced characters, Metahumans, who each have different powers. The women here are just as powerful as the men. Our couple, Marine Commander Jaime and Marine Sniper Kyle are so hot together. Hiding their relationship has been tough, but now they'll be going in as a civilian couple.
Commander Jaime
This is a Sci-Fi tale with vivid details and lots of fast paced action. As the undercover couple, Jaime and Kyle can easily show their desire in looks, kisses, and touches, so they can totally concentrate on the mission. After all, they don't have to fake their feelings. This series is so well written by Hailey Turner, with moving dialogue, action sequences, and sizzling sex scenes.

She gives us a magnificent story with fantastic descriptions, deep emotion, and it's a real page turner. We never want it to end. Marvelous !
As the book unfolds we are given lots of information, but it is infused so flawlessly, we don't even realize we are learning all about this futuristic era.

I highly recommend this thrilling book ! ENJOY !

A Joyfully Jay review.

First and foremost, I have to address that this is the second book in the Metahuman Files series. It was presented as a standalone, but having read the first one, In the Wreckage, I quickly jumped at the chance to read this second book. But this book does not really work as a standalone at all. Jamie and Kyle’s beginning is all in the first book, not to mention the lead up for the reason the Alpha team takes on this mission. Also, a good chunk of world building is presented in the first book. So, basically, I’m telling you read that first book first, get immersed in this world and the characters, and then jump right into this one.

I couldn’t wait for more in this series, and this book showcases why. In a futuristic world, some humans have developed additional powers. Metahumans were exposed to Splice, and some junk coding in their DNA allowed them to not only survive, but to gain extra powers. Think mutants of the Marvel universe here. Turner has built an amazing world, detailed and nuanced and wholly believable. And it purveys throughout every aspect of this world. It works on every level.

The characters are wonderfully consistent and fully fleshed out. Again, it’s hard to talk about Jamie and Kyle and all of the beautifully developed secondary characters without referencing their beginning. Jamie is a leader, stalwart, true, loyal, and commanding. He also views his team as his real family, and the bonds between them show. They are a truly cohesive unit. Kyle, and his brother Alexei, join the team after it’s formed. But they have integrated themselves and become part of the whole. That is shown even more in this book, the seamlessness with which the team works together outstanding.
