Saint Bernadette and the Miracles of Lourdes

Rate this book
Each year, millions of people from all over the world bathe in the water of a spring in Lourdes, France. They come to pray for physical and spiritual healing and to remember a young girl who was chosen by the Mother of Jesus to draw us closer to her Son. Captivatingly illustrated with delicate mixed media―watercolor, inks, gold overlays, and collage―this lovely book tells the story of Saint Bernadette and the beautiful lady, the miraculous spring, and the wonders that continue to make Lourdes a sign of God's tender love for humanity, and especially for the sick. This book has a very precious look with its lovely gold overlays, and its very unique art. It has a quite different style from the other volumes in the "Life of a Saint" series.  Ages 5 and up.

Saint Bernadette and the Miracles of Lourdes is a children's book written and illustrated by Demi. The book begins by speaking of a miller and his wife, named Francois and Louise Soubirous. Their first child was a girl named Bernadette. Louise had an accident shortly thereafter and another woman had to care for Bernadette. Soon she had a sister named Toinette. When Bernadette was ten, her family lost their mill and Bernadette had to go live and work with the woman who cared for her. Bernadette was a shepherdess for this woman. It was this profession that would eventually change her life, as it was during this time that her devotion to the Rosary grew. One day Our Lady appeared to her in an apparition. No one believed her for the longest time despite the miracles. Bernadette was even threatened with jail time if she kept going back to the grotto where she saw Mary, but Bernadette's faith was strong. Today, Bernadette is a saint and that grotto, Lourdes, is a Catholic shrine that greets six million visitors annually. The book tells the story beautifully, making sure not to miss a single detail, and this story is vividly captured in a unique illustration style that keeps drawing your eye from page-to-page. This is an excellent book to introduce your children to St. Bernadette and Our Lady of Lourdes.

For believers, I'm sure this is a wonderful story. It's certainly informational - I'd heard of Lourdes, but didn't know all the details behind it. Bernadette's life was certainly not an easy one.
Demi's signature illustrations are gorgeous!

A very sweet story about Saint Bernadette. The illustrations were beautiful but I didn't find the text to be as engaging. To interest students one must include facts or details that they can relate to. I would have liked seeing a few more of these in the book.

I have been loving Demi's work, but not this one so much. I had a real problem with the artwork.

She used these beautifully painted people and set them on a plain watercolor background. I really didn't like the effect. I don't think it worked. It was very surreal, I suppose.

The story is about St. Bernadette who I've never heard of. Being raised baptist, we didn't talk about all the saints. It's too bad because it's sort of interesting.

Bernadette was a poor cheerful girl. One day at the river she sees a vision of Mary. As she prays to Mary in the 1860's, people notice her and they all start to show up. One day, Mary tells Bernadette to drink from a newly formed spring. She does and the spring flows forth. Later several people dip their bodies in the spring and are healed. The spring becomes important.

Today in Lourdes, there is a large Cathedral where that spring is and miracles still happen in it. Some people still see Mary to this day.

A nice story I didn't know. I simply wasn't impressed with the medium it was told in. I guess I expect more from Demi now.
