Welcome to Everlasting, Maine, where there's no such thing as normal.

Charlotte Fenchurch knows that, which is why she’s not that surprised when a very special book of magic falls into her hands at the library where she works. As a fledgling witch, owning her own grimoire is a dream come true. But there’s something…mysterious about the book she just can’t figure out.

Leopard shifter Walker Black knows what’s odd about the book. It’s full of black magic and so dangerous that it could destroy the world. Good thing the Fraternal Order of Light has sent him to Everlasting to recover it and put it into safe storage. If he has to, he’ll even take the witch who owns it into custody.

That is until he meets Charlotte and realizes she’s not out to watch the world burn. She’s sweet and kind and wonderful. Suddenly protecting her is all he wants to do. Well, that and kiss her some more. But dark forces seem determined to get their hands on the book, making Charlotte their target, and Walker worries that he won't be able to protect her from them – or the organization he works for.

Can Walker and Charlotte survive the onslaught of danger? Or is that just witchful thinking?

A super cute cozy paranormal series. This one is set in coastal Maine, with each book written by a different author. I started with this one because it’s written by an author I’m familiar with and know I love. Charlotte is a recently empowered witch working at a library, and struggling to learn to use her powers. She has to be careful, however, because while there are supernaturals living in Everlasting, Maine, there are lots of regular humans, and the supernaturals are way not outed. She finds a creepy old book and being a book nerd, decides to rescue it from the trash because, reasons. Cute guy Walker comes into the library for a temporary membership. Turns out he’s a shifter working for a secret organization on the hunt for an evil book of spells (which of course he doesn’t tell Charlotte, assuming she could be the witch in possession.) And cue the meet cute.

This was short and sweet, and perfectly delightful. Nice touches of magic, good twists, and cute cat scenes. Will check out more in this cozy series.

I’ve read two works since I read this one, and no review (not that I’ve written any reviews since July 7th). I mention that only to note that it will be more difficult for me to say what I think about this specific book now.

This is the fourth book in a series, a series I’ve only read this specific book in. I was given the understanding that the books were stand-alones so . . . I entered with that in mind. Mostly because this would be the 15th book I’ve read by this author and all the other books were by different authors, none of whom I’d ever read before.

So, what’s going on here in this book? A novice witch, Charlotte Fenchurch, is working in the library when two events occur at near-about the same time that change her life course -> 1) the head librarian grunts at finding a donation in the book return slot, says the book looks like crap, and throws it away – Charlotte loves books to the point she’d rather see one be used to form the base of a table than to see one tossed in the garbage, so she takes the book and brings it home with her; 2) a super-hot man, and I mean, really gaggingly gorgeous man (is gaggingly a word? I think that might not be a word, it should be) begins to outrageously flirt with her – which tells her two things: a) the man is up to no good because no man that looks like him would spend to seconds with a woman like her; b) he’s hot, let’s play with him anyway.

The book, the one the main female character saved, turns out to be ‘a very special book of magic’, ‘a grimoire’ – an ancient book of spells. The type of book that bonds to a witch and then will be . . . something something evil . . something something… whatever.

The man turns out to be a leopard. Heh. Okay, a leopard shifter who works for the ladies of light. No wait, the lords of leaping. Hmm, WTF was the organization again? Oh, something involving FoL, friends of light? Well the L is light. Oh, it’s also in the book description: ‘Freaking Orange Lizards’ (hmm, no that’s not it, dang I’m not funny, it’s ‘Fraternal Order of Light’). Basically the FOL’s mission in life is to be, at least based on this book, to hunt down and kill bad witches (or put them into prison) and take magic items (I think the bad kind not just all kinds) into storage to save the world. More on that . . .

Now. Bloody freaking hell that got annoying. Every other thing out of that male lead character was about how something or other was bound to ‘destroy all mankind’ or some shit like that if the FOL didn’t step in front and save everyone. And, sure, there’s probably some truth about it but you can only read about yet another apocalyptic level event being blocked before you fall asleep at the mere words.

Right, sorry.

So, right, the other thing that impacted Charlotte’s life was this dude, Walker Black. Who says he is into antiquing, which he is in a minor way – as a side kind of cover way, while mostly being an agent of FOL . .. since birth (seriously).

Walker spends the majority of the book finding Charlotte gorgeous, wanting to be with her, doubting himself and assuming she’s the most powerful witch he’s ever, and I mean ever, encountered because . . . he lusts for her and obviously that means that she put a spell on him. (seriously, this is one fucked up book). Right, so Walker is there in town to find and store, or I mean put into storage, that same book previously mentioned as being found by Charlotte.

The two leads flirt and stuff. Everyone and the cat turn out to have a secret identity (the cat is also secretly able to shed really well, okay, I could have gone with ‘witch familiar’ but that was only assumed without being confirmed). And the book ends. Yay. Book ended.

The man was a condescending jackass with a few redeeming qualities. The woman was borderline TSTL, though mostly due to circumstances out of her control and not her actual normal personality.

Witchful Thinking by Kristen Painter

4th book in the Everlasting cozy mystery series. Each book stands alone by different authors with the town of paranormals in Maine in common.
A novice witch is targeted by a witch hunter because she’s found a grimoire.

A cute and often amusing mystery with just a smidge of romance.
A really fun town with a great concept. I hope they continue the series so we can learn more about the residents. Especially the sheriff and the calendar deputies.

I loved the beginning with emphasis on the importance of books in Charlotte’s life.
Excerpt:
“The offending object was still in Millie’s gaunt hands, a shabby thing about the size of a dictionary with a tattered leather cover and gilded pages that had long since lost their golden gleam. Shame. Charlotte loved books in any condition, but this one had not been well-cared for. “Maybe it could be restored—”
“No.” Millie clucked her tongue and shook her head as she pulled the book away from Charlotte’s gaze. “This book should have been discarded, not donated. The title is completely worn off.”
Pain clenched Charlotte’s heart a little. The thought of a book being discarded had that effect on her. Books were…well, everything.
Millie tried to open the book and snorted. “And the pages have been glued together. Abominable.” She tossed the book into the trash bin.
The heavy clunk of it dropping to the bottom pealed like a death knell through Charlotte’s soul as she went back to her cart of books. Even if the pages had been glued together, it could still be decorative. Books always looked nice on a shelf. Or under a plant. No book deserved such an inglorious end as the trash bin”

What a fun seasonal read! It is October at Cranberry Festival time. Charlotte is a librarian and coincidentally a novice witch working in Everlasting, Maine, a town where paranormal is normal and mystical beings coexist with the human world. One day an old book 'accidentally' comes into the library, drawing Charlotte to it. Turns out this is an ancient dark magic grimoire in search of its next witch owner who, once bonded with it, will be the most powerful witch in the world. Enter the gorgeous leopard shapeshifter Walker, an agent of an organization dedicated to protecting the world from evil magic, seeking to find and neutralize the grimoire before it bonds with its new witch.

There is a lot of charm and humor to the story, a colorful cast of characters, enough twists and turns to stay interesting, just enough romance, and a really big long-haired orange kitty named Edgar Allen who plays an important role in saving the day. I do have one complaint: the writing was just a tad too 'perky' at various times.

This is part of the Happily Everlasting series of cozy mysteries with each book written by a different author. I definitely will read more, probably the Christmas one next.

Now that was all the fun and silliness I was hoping for from this series. And I kind of got a little bit of a Beauty and the Beast vibe from it. In proper animated princess fashion, Charlotte is so sweet and so good she really should have woodland animals vying to do her bidding. Walker’s kind of caught in a trap of his own making with the mission his employer has sent him to Everlasting to accomplish. But Charlotte is simply too darned good for him to believe she’s the evil mastermind he’s looking for. Besides, she’s also too enchanting for him to resist. I loved these two. They’re adorable together. And I really enjoyed the way this story kept surprising me with layer after layer of deception and double-crosses. I can’t wait to see what’s next.

A break from her recent writing projects of Nocturne Falls and the Jayne Frost books, Kristen's Everlasting book is a fun read. I really enjoy the Nocturne Falls books, and like those, this book brings a bit of the super natural magic into our mundane human world. The story is well paced and the characters believable.

Mild Violence
Mild Romance
No Cussing

A good read for all ages, and I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series even if they aren't by Kristen.

This is a delightful new series within the Happily Everlasting collaboration. The story is fun, a little quirky, and very entertaining. This book is full of interesting characters that I enjoyed getting to know. The more I read about Everlasting, the more it sounds like an interesting place to visit. Having said that, I hope there will be more of these characters, I really liked them.

I received a copy of this book from the author, my review has been voluntarily submitted.

“The witch and the witch-hunter. So help her, when she made bad decisions, she went big.”

Well, the Happily Everlasting series delivers precisely what it advertises. It’s not deathly compelling, but consistently interesting, and a nice little HEA with a paranormal flair. No unnecesssry relationship drama, just a pleasant story. Like a jolt of ice cream and sunshine on a winter day.

Fun, with a twist or two

I really enjoyed this. The characters were quirky and the plot was fast paced enough that my attention didn’t wander at any time. Charlotte was a sweetie, and Walker was fairly laid back in the scheme of things (for a shapeshifter), however Charlotte’s gorgeous cat was the best 🥰

Strangely, though, this is the first paranormal cosy mystery I’ve read that did not include a body - at all! So, this was more a find the object than a whodunnit.

This is a collaboration project series situated in a world created jointly by several authors. Each author contributes a book, featuring new main characters and some recurring common side characters situated in the town of Everlasting.
I did not read these books in order, so this was the first book I read from this series, and it is written by one of my favourite authors. The author is the reason I picked up this series in the first place. As I expected, it is a very nice paranormal romance and a fourth book of a new series. It is not written in the style of Nocturne Falls, author's recent series, but in a way, it does have a similar cosy feeling, in a sense of a beautiful ending and lovable characters, as well as proper villains.
Writing is superb, as is character development, but I have come to expect nothing less from Kristen Painter. The world building is slow, as I have come to recognise as her signature style. In other words, she always makes me wonder what else is there, but as the story progress, she reveals more and more of the world, until I find myself there, because it becomes so incredibly vivid.
I liked this story very much. As all the other stories, it is situated in the town called Everlasting. It did not involve many characters, apart from the two leads, a delightful Sheriff and a handful of side characters. The main female lead is novice witch Charlotte and the lead male character is Walker, a witch hunter and some kind of paranormal investigator working for a secret organisation. They are both extremely likable. Charlotte is a librarian and she has a beautiful big orange cat. (I always feel like adopting a cat after reading Kristen Painter’s books.) Their interactions and the chemistry between them are wonderful, and in the combination with the plot, I just couldn’t put the book down. I started reading and did not stop until I was done.
This is a part of brand new series and I highly recommend it, especially if you are already a fan of Nocturne falls or simply like a good paranormal romance. The book can be read as standalone but the suggested reading order is: Dead Man Talking: A Cozy Paranormal Mystery (The Happily Everlasting Series, #1), Once Hunted, Twice Shy: A Cozy Paranormal Mystery (The Happily Everlasting Series, #2), Fooled Around and Spelled In Love: A Cozy Paranormal Mystery (The Happily Everlasting Series, #3), and Witchful Thinking: A Cozy Paranormal Mystery (The Happily Everlasting Series, #4).

Charlotte is one of the town librarians and when she finds an old book, she feels compelled to take it home with her. But with a sexy regular in the library, for once Charlotte has more than just books on the brain!

Walker is a witch hunter and can sense witches and magic. He is awaiting a powerful but dark magic book to return to Everlasting like a homing beacon and Charlotte may be the unwitting witch it latches onto. But as he and Charlotte get to know one another, he becomes more and more uncomfortable with lying to her.

But when bodies start to drop and Charlotte gets drawn into the investigation, she and Walker decide to combine forces and investigate on their own.

Great characters, witty dialogue and a cat that steals the show! Edgar Allen is just so...lifelike and adorable!

I truly enjoy reading this series.

Walker is sent to Everlasting to find a dark magic book by the Fraternal Order of Light. He gets the ''feeling'' that it is in the library where Charlotte works. When he is unable to find it there he goes about looking for it and happens to fall for Charlotte along the way. But..... does she have the book, if so is she a dark witch? Is she out to burn down the world?

You are going to have to read this fabulous book to find these answers out for yourself. I am sure you won't be disappointed.

Kristen has a way of making a town leap off the pages. I love that about her writing. She makes me want to be there with the characters.

I loved Charlotte’s kind and practical nature, and her cat Edgar Allan reminded me of Garfield. Walker was charmingly comedic while trying to investigate and impress Charlotte-reading an historical romance AND discussing it intelligently is a win-win. My favorite funny was the intro to the sheriff and her nicknamed man-of-the month younger male deputies-such a hoot!

The only word I can think of to describe this book is cute! It’s as advertised-a blend of paranormal, cozy mystery, and romance-kissing is as sexy as it gets-all these ingredients concocted a charming, light hearted, funny story I enjoyed!

Book Four of Happily Everlasting Series
Title: Witchful Thinking: A Cozy Paranormal Mystery
Author: Kristen Painter
Characters: Charlotte and Walker
Review:
Charlotte is a witch, although not a very good one. Walker hunts witches. Before either of them know it, they are fighting on the same side against the black magic.
After reading all four books in this series, I am moving to Everlasting. The murder rate seems kinda high, but the people there would make the fun. Life is a gamble after all. Better to enjoy where you are then to worry about what may or may not happen.
Booking flight now.
This is a thumbs way up for me.

Great new series! This story takes place in Everlasting, Maine. Charlotte, a witch, is being hunted by Walker, a witch hunter. Only she doesn’t know that. Walker is tracking a powerful grimoire that could be life changing (and not in a good way) if it falls in the wrong hands. But the hands it falls in is Charlotte’s, a sweet librarian with a surprising backbone. The story is a fun story, with lots of twists and turns as well as a delightful blooming romance.

This is the 4th installment of a new series, The Happily Everlasting Series. This installment is written by Kristen Painter, and the real reason why I started this series. I have not read any of the other books. This book is about a librarian, who is a novice witch. A mysterious book shows up at the library one day, and then the witch's world goes from boring and routine to dangerous in the blink of an eye. This book will keep you entertained; not wanting to put it down until the end.

A really cute romance! A Kristen Painter story set in an all-new town --Everlasting, Maine-- with all-new characters, starring a novice witch and a leopard shifter. The story moved along briskly, with several plot twists that surprised me. I especially liked the way the romance developed. This book was fun and I really look forward to learning more about a town described as having a number of "unusual" residents!

This was a fun, paranormal cozy-type story and I really enjoyed reading it!

I've read a few of this author's books, and if you like light, gently magical, cleanly romantic stories, I highly recommend her books to you.

This was a short book, but an easy, enjoyable read, with interesting, likable creative characters, a good story and a little suspense. It would be a perfect read for the beach, vacation or just a rainy Sunday on the couch with a blanket and a beverage.

Lots of fun!

A new series and town from Kristen Painter -- excellent. There is some dark magic being used by someone and the two main characters have to figure out who and if it is one of them. I enjoyed the book, not quite as much as Nocturne Falls, but I am looking forward to seeing how the town grows in personality and to meet all the crazy inhabitants.

This is a great addition to the series! I loved all the twists Kristen Painter provided for our reading enjoyment! I totally thought I had a characteristic pegged only to find out I was so wrong, (which isn't a very common occurrence for me.) It really held my attention, and I can't wait to see what's next in this literary world!

I love the mystery of the witches trying to steal the book from the one the book chose to be it's keeper. She is a novice witch & not into dark magic like the others. The hunter who is following the book isn't too sure yet. It takes a little while for him to see she isn't a dark witch or working for them. Then her library where she works gets broken into & turned upside down & a few days later her place as well. The book is in her bag but gets stolen. She & the hunter, Walker, start working together to try to find out where it is. He tells her she &her cat can stay at his place until her apartment can get put together. His boss tells him to bring the book & the witch in. He tells them Charlotte has nothing to do with it. When her boss calls her to come help at the library late at night, he is unsure, but she is ok. As it gets later he gets more worried & goes to look for her. At the library, she finds it locked & sees her boss Millie's car. The old judge walks up & pulls a gun on her & tells her to get into her car & drive them to his house. They go down into the basement. She sees Millie tied to a chair. He gives her the book & tells her to read the reincarnation spell to bring his wife back to life. That was his payment for getting the book for her mentor Lola, who came down about then. She was so happy to see her until she realized that she was going to use her to bind the book to herself. She turned the judge into a mouse & told Charlotte she was claiming the book. She made Charlotte speak the spell but use Lola's blood for the binding. Millie turned out to be Lola's mother & had just been playing a part to make Charlotte do what they asked. So now that Charlotte was secured to something, Millie had been let loose. They had informed her of their plans to take over the world little by little, her choice was to join or die. By then Walker had tracked them to the house & had made it down the stairs. He was able to get to them use a binding spell on them both so that any spell they used only went back on them. He set Charlotte free. They tied the other two up. He called his boss, found out he was close & took Charlotte & the book home. He went back to the judge's house to wait for his boss. His boss went to his apartment. Charlotte answered the door. She called Walker, he got home fast, to explain. His boss still thought Charlotte should be going in with the other witches. Walker quit. Charlotte decided the best way to fix this was to destroy the book, so she used what little amount of witch power she had & burnt it. Walker's boss left with the other 2 witches in custody. Charlotte became the new boss. I love it.

Dark Magic can’t beat the true light of love.

Witchful Thinking by Kristen Painter is the fourth but not final book in the Happily Everlasting Series, two of the other authors will be releasing their next installment soon. The story takes place in Everlasting, Maine a small town along the coast, “where there’s no such thing as normal.”

OK, this book had me from the very beginning. I absolutely loved it. There is a dark underbelly side of Everlasting, Maine. It was so great to see the town from a different perspective. I have to say I did miss Hugh and his alternative swearing.

We start with our female lead, Charlotte. She is a young librarian working at the local library. She meets lots of townsfolk and knows her regulars. She is kind of gullible. She is also a very new witch, who really hasn’t learned how to use her powers yet. She is sweet and lives a very modest life, with her cat Edgar Allen. Charlotte likes books, all books, it really doesn’t matter. Charlotte doesn’t have much confidence in herself when it comes to men. She considers herself plain and ordinary. She really doesn’t date much. She takes people at their face value. I did mention she is gullible, maybe a little naïve too. However, for me, her saving grace is her love of chocolate. She is really a sweet person. I liked her immediately.

Walker Black is just visiting Everlasting, well actually is on an assignment. He is in Everlasting to find the spell book filled with dark magic. According to his employers, the spellbook will return to the Everlasting and he has been going there to look for the book. Where he runs into Charlotte. Walker is very good looking, a smooth talker and Charlotte is immediately drawn to him. Walker is many things but being witch-friendly isn’t exactly one of them. He is kind of the opposite.

We meet a few new characters in Everlasting, not too many of the ones from the other books. Oh, the Sheriff, herself is actually in here a lot, personally and professionally. Then, of course, we have the deputies, too. There are a lot of dark characters, I won’t go into their details so I dont spoil anything.

You have to read this book, it is that fabulous, and my rating is 5 stars. Yes, I recommend it if you haven’t already got that.

Coming Soon to the Happily Everlasting Series are:
Total Eclipse of the Hunt by Mandy M. Roth (I feel a little 80s vibe coming on…)
Curses & Cupcakes by Michelle M. Pillow

I didn't like this book as much as the first two or the third one.

The characters were sort of boring, the story was boring.

The MC and her love interest, Walker, were dumb as rocks. It got old really fast how often he thought she was the most powerful witch EVAH! and the bad guy. For some super, awesome, special FOL agent he really was an idiot.

Then there was the MC. She couldn't have bought a clue even if it was for sale and she could afford it. Everybody, EVERYBODY!, got over on her.

I knew as soon as the characters were introduced what was going on. I also didn't like how this author chose one of the side characters prevalent in all the other books as a bad guy. It throws the other books off.

Then there is the whole shifter issue. Does this author even understand established shifter lore? Where are the mate signs? If Charlotte isn't his mate, and it appears she isn't, then what the heck are they even doing together in this book? The fact that she clearly isn't his mate and that the characters weren't all that likeable, it took the shine off this book. Also, they have almost no chemistry. The author didn't even bother trying to give them chemistry.

3-stars because the writing wasn't bad and the biggest issue is that I expected more from this book. That's because the ones that came before it were so good, this one doesn't stand up to those. Not even close.

A newbie witch who's come into possession of a powerful book and a shifter who hunts witches who abuse their powers. Yeah, these two are DEFINITELY going to spark off one another with those odds in their favor. HA.

The fact that the book chose Charlotte is already a mark against her since the last witch who owned the book used it for nefarious purposes. So Walker comes into this sort of thinking the worst. Well, at least he's expected to think the worst. But Charlotte is sweet and kind and doesn't give off that bad magic vibe which sort of befuddles Walker. Because he has orders when it comes to the book and the witch it's bound to and falling for a sweet, powerful newbie is making him question what he's been asked to do.

On Charlotte's end, she doesn't quite know what to make of the charismatic shifter who's showing an interest in her. She likes him, but as the truth unfolds, she's not sure who she can trust. I mean, she does trust him, but THINGS HAPPEN and danger is lurking around every corner.

I'm still enjoying my time in Everlasting. It's fun and a little twisted and that's pretty much what I'm here for. *thumbs up*

This is my first time reading anything by this author, but it will not be my last and I will happily add her books to my TBR list. The fourth book set in the fictional town of Everlasting does not disappoint in its sweetness nor its supernatural intrigue. What happens when a novice witch/librarian, Charlotte, finds a book that looks tattered and dusty but then appears beautiful and new when she touches it with her bare hands? And just who is the handsome stranger, Walker Black, that has popped into her library and starts chatting her up? There is more than meets the eye happening, both with the book and Walker. When push comes to shove will the dark magic swirling around Everlasting win out? Or, will Walker's true nature come out to play and save not only the day, but the girl too? If you want to find out you must one-click the book, but if you are looking for a sweet couple, a quick read and some magical intrigue you will not be disappointed.
