In this playful, but thoughtful picture book, illustrator Adam Carruthers perfectly captures the sentiments of four Michael Wagner poems about families and how they support and nurture their members. Suitable for pre-schoolers and early primary aged children, Family Hugs both warms the heart and tickles the funnybone, while providing much to reflect upon about how loving families function.
Michael Wagner is the author of more than 90 books for children which include the much loved Maxx Rumble series (20 books), six books about a delightfully silly and warm-hearted family called The Undys, the CBCA Honour Picture Book of the Year, Dirt by Sea, Why I Love Footy, Why I Love Summer, Bear Make Den (co-written with his partner, Jane Godwin) and many more. He's also self-published a handful of titles including: Pig Dude, Family Hugs and the So Wrong series.
Prior to becoming a children’s author, Michael worked for ten years as radio broadcaster with the ABC, wrote and produced award-winning animation, penned everything from advertising copy to songs and comedy, and grew up in a Housing Commission flat.
“And the ones who love you most of all will gather in a shrug, to give you what you need that day, ONE BIG FAMILY HUG!”

Family Hugs reads like it's three separate stories and ends with one very long boring family tree. It's about love, hugs and the role of family. This wasn't a horrible book, it really wasn't but when I read it to my little niece who is 5 we were both pretty bored, to be honest. It just didn't captivate her and the illustrations were a bit boring and dull, I think if the colors would have been bright and vibrant it would have made a BIG difference.
A big family cuddle, a spag bol dinner, a stern family meeting, even an arty family party, Family Hugs has it all. Or if perhaps your having a bad day, this book will chip away at at your despair. With such a motley family tree, Family Hugs will leave you with one monstrous family hug. Written in rhyme so delightful it will have you chortling from beginning to end, and illustrations I wish I could cut out and stick on my walls, we highly recommend this wonderful edition to your little people library.
Holy Hugs, Batman! I’ve been impressed with the simple illustrations and the meaning behind every page. I tell my clients and every one I know to use their words and ask for a hug. No matter the type, the hugs works wonder on anyone, even the meanest one in the bunch. The kids would love the way the illustrations make sense. It is a great learning and entertaining book for all ages.

Cute and reassuring for the little ones Good album built like a nursery Rhyme for each mini story. The illustrations are funny, clear and pleasant. This book is very good for the little ones to help them not to worry about what could happen to them during the day. On the other hand, it is a bit depressing for children living in single-parent families and without siblings because they advocate the support of the whole family around the child, whatever happens. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book
This is a lovely book to read with children. It is colourful, the words flow, there is lots of detailed pictures and good messages for children throughout. My 7 year old smiled whilst we read this and he wanted to go back after to point out the things he had noticed in the pictures and talk about the stories more. We love family hugs so were looking forward to reading this book, my son wanted to give it more than 5 stars.

This wonderful rhyming family oriented storybook is terrific. The illustrations are great like a family album. The easy to read story has a big meaning behind it. Family is very important and if your having a very bad day, call on your family. When you start out your day crummy and it doesn't get any better a family hug will make everything better. When you have failed a test or two have a big family dinner. Remember family is who you have, even if it's not a Mom and Dad. Just a Mom or dad or a sister or a brother Is a family. I received this book as a contest winner. I'm very happy to have won so I can share this book with you.
A very enjoyable book with lots of love and, of course, hugs. I enjoyed reading this with the kids and then, of course, sharing hugs. The kids enjoyed this as well. I highly recommend this book.

This book was good and also the illustrations. The message was well done. That a family hug is important when you're having a bad day. I received a free copy for an honest review.
This is such a cute story about family hugs. I loved that it shows different families and how we are all different. I really wish that the text was shorter for younger kids. But it's a cute story. The illustrations are amazing and really help tell the story.
I recieved this book from Hidden Gems for my honest review.
The rhyming is more than a little forced in spots and I think the story could've been better conveyed without trying to have it all rhyme. The stories are cute, particularly "First There's Me", but there wasn't really anything memorable about this book overall.
