The Autoimmune Solution Cookbook: Over 150 Delicious Recipes to Prevent and Reverse the Full Spectrum of Inflammatory Symptoms and Diseases

Rate this book
The companion cookbook to the revolutionary New York Times bestseller The Autoimmune Solution, filled with more than 150 nutritious, easy-to-prepare, every day recipes to heal symptoms of inflammation and autoimmune disorders, including Graves’ Disease, Psoriasis, Fibromyalgia, Lupus, Celiac disease, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and Multiple sclerosis.

Nine in ten Americans suffer from inflammation or an autoimmune disorder—conditions for which conventional medicine has no cure. Minor irritations like rashes and runny noses are ignored, while chronic and debilitating diseases like Crohn’s and rheumatoid arthritis are handled with a cocktail of toxic treatments that fail to address their root cause. But as Dr. Amy Myers revealed in The Autoimmune Solution, there are solutions. In this invaluable cookbook, she now shows you how to repair your body and reverse your symptoms by eating your way to good health.

The Autoimmune Solution Cookbook delivers more than 150 grain-free recipes designed to prevent and reverse the full spectrum of autoimmune diseases, including allergies, obesity, asthma, cardiovascular disease, fibromyalgia, lupus, IBS, chronic headaches, fatigue, multiple sclerosis, colitis, Graves’ disease, and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. As our food and environment becomes more toxic, the health of millions of us have been impaired. Thanks to Dr. Myers, you no longer need to rely on prescriptions—with troubling, sometimes dangerous side effects—to counteract your body’s over-reactive immune system. The Autoimmune Solution Cookbook is the healthy alternative to cope with and conquer inflammatory-related symptoms and diseases.

I was super excited when I heard about this book...it was a big let down. I do not like the set up. The pages have an odd feel to them, and the first 1/4 of the book is explaining autoimmune issues and all that that entails. Isn't that what her previous book was for? Then her recipes seemed like a big advertisement for her product line. I wanted this book to tell me what to eat to feel better and to make a permanent lifestyle change. This did nothing for me.

I’ve read Dr Myers’ Autoimmune Solution book, looking for some answers to my own issues, so am familiar with her work. Likewise, with this cookbook, I was hoping to find some recipes I might be able to use, given the overabundance of food allergies I have at age 60. Sorry to say this book was a near-complete fail for me. I use a ketogenic diet, extremely modified to accommodate said allergies. I found a few recipes similar to those I already use, but also found the majority of her recipes use coconut, avocado, cucumber, sweet potatoes, squashes & other foods I cannot eat without repercussions. I think Dr Myers made a lot of assumptions as to the safety of these foods, especially coconut & avocado, and others may find themselves in the same boat as me. I appreciated her brief mention of histamine intolerance, but she might also look into lectin intolerance as a potential source of difficulties experienced by others like me.

Good amount of recipes, mexican forward flavors for a good number of them (not a bad thing) but it seemed to be using (pushing?) the author's ingredients.

Skimmed it. I am not ready for these restrictions, maybe I can ease in? I'm also realizing that I need to buy the book if I'm going to try this because a checkout from the library isn't going to cut it!

If you want a cookbook that seems mainly designed to promote lot of products sold by the author to solve "leaky gut," you might like this one. The non-recipe health information portion of the book reads like an infomercial for The Myers Way products. I was put off by the lack of scientifically sound citations for the health claims made, such as peer reviewed studies or journal articles.

I was also put off by the reliance on products like palm oil, the production of which is harmful to the environment and climate and, unless the consumer is vigilant, comes from an industry rife with child and slave labor, and the heavy handed inclusion of foods with high levels of saturated fat, which has peer-reviewed studies showing ill effects on cardiovascular health.

In reading through the recipes, I found a couple of ideas (literally just a couple) that I will try, but they don’t really require an actual recipe to make: roasted sweet potato slices in place of bread with avocado in place of cream cheese for a bagels-and-lox stand-in, and using steamed white root veggies with an herb dressing instead of standard potato salad. Otherwise, the recipes are fairly standard for this type of cookbook, and there are not enough of them to make it very useful if you’re looking for something to give you ideas to include in regular meal rotations.

Two stars because it’s really easy to read—I got through it in just a couple of hours—and the equipment, standard ingredients, and recipes are explained succinctly. If you’re brand new to this, and a believer in leaky gut, you might appreciate the simplicity, but I think you’ll really prefer a cookbook with lots more recipes, to be honest.

If you’re interested, check if your library has it before you spend money on this one.

Food is hard. It's hard for anyone who wants to escape the Standard American Diet and eat healthier, and it's especially hard for anyone with an autoimmune disease (or three). "Eating healthy" goes so much farther (and is so much more restrictive) than eating gluten free (which is hard enough!). So in that sense, this cookbook is stressful. Even after completely upending our diets, there's so much farther to go. But, encouragingly, Myers agrees with many of the other diet resources I've been reading, so at least I'm not being pulled in a dozen different directions by different "experts". Just working on adding one new recipe and removing one problem ingredient from our home at a time.

As far as the recipes themselves go, there were a number that looked too complicated and time consuming for my current energy levels. But there were enough that looked good that I'll be buying a copy of this cookbook for our home library.

This cookbook is generally good. I had read the Autoimmune Solution previously, but actually the start of this cookbook covers all the important points from the first book, therefore you can pick this book up without prior knowledge of the system/diet. I thought there was a good range of recipes. My only real complaint is that some of the ingredients are not to be found easily/cheaply in Ireland. Therefore this is not a diet for the budget-conscious. But for the health-conscious, I think it's a good book.

Zapped through this book and found some great ideas and recipes to try to help my health issues. You think you’re eating healthy and doing the right things but some can be detrimental and add to your problems. I read all the text on how and why it’s good to try to eliminate certain foods and use organic produce which I do, where possible. I copied some recipes too and I’m now on her email list for her newsletter.

I refuse to buy garlic from overseas despite they say it’s ok. In fact we do grow a few things in our small veggie plot. I do not eat much meat as I’ve taken a dislike to red meat. She mentions bison though is good but good luck getting that in South Australia! Yes she’s an American Dr. Never use light olive oil as it can have other nasty oils added. But she prefers avocado or coconut oil in her recipes. Also coconut amino which I’d never heard of instead of soy sauce which I use. Apparently I can get that in most shops here and it is fermented coconut. So much to learn but when you suffer from chronic pain it gets to a stage you’ll try anything if it might help. All in all a very good book which I know I can get from my local library.

This book was lended to me by my therapist who’s been helping me with my health journey. I used this book religiously for two months during an elimination diet, and enjoyed it so much, I’ll be buying my own copy. The recipes are fantastic. I’m someone who loves to eat and the recipes were delicious and after about 2 weeks, my symptoms started to vanish. I lost 30 lbs in two months. The weight loss came as an added bonus for me. The most impressive for me was that my joint and muscle pain improved, my sleep improved, my moods improved, and I had way more energy! I’ll be sticking by the Meyer’s Way going forward in my life and I look forward to many more years enjoying life in a healthier, better-feeling body!

Part book, part cookbook. Lots of good info on autoimmune issues. There were some good recipes included and I might try a few! I like my cookbooks to actually have pictures included with the recipes though.

The author clearly as an ulterior motive in this book: "follow everything I say and you'll be cured" variety. This is highly suspect. The recipes are just ok - there isn't anything "special" about them.

This is a cookbook for Autoimmune disease relief and reversal, if you need a low histamine or different diet then this isnt for you.
Its geared towards the US in regards to where to buy things and what to prioritise if your budget is small.
She does promote her bone broth, collagen and gelatine in her recipes, she does state several times you can use an alternative and what to look for, so if this will offend you dont bother.
Theres plenty if science in this book but it's a cookbook, for more info on the whys and what's read the original book.
I have ruematoid arthritis and am tottering on the edge of applying this diet as I'm not getting as much relief from a paleo as I'm sure I could.
The cold bare facts are in this diet so if your going to become a nanny when she tells you it takes gluten to leave your body, three months then don't read.
I wont be running out buying now toxic cook wear and the like, she says herself she was sick a long time, I dont she did either, but I will certainly give it a lot of thought when I do replace my current things
As someone from the uk I found it very informative, you can buy alot of the same things in amazon or buywholefoods.com, and as for the cost I may spend more on groceries but I've found I'm so full I only eat 2x a day and sometimes not even that!
I found the recipes on how to make coconut milk and butter etc very informative and useful, I found coconut milk powder online so I may change from nut milk at least
As I said I'm still on the fence I dont know that I can give up nuts and eggs, but I will see how it goes, after all I do want to get better and that's surely worth any sacrifice.

This covers all the bases for anti-inflammatory cooking, however, I would personally find it really difficult to eat like this everyday. I would have loved more healthy swaps for realistic meal/snack ideas.

Meant of the recipes had expensive and specialty ingredients. I appreciated the list of recipes according to allergies as I am on a low histamine diet but it didn't leave too many options.

Most of the recipes include a Myers Way ingredient. I was not expecting a sales pitch for her line of products. Also, not one mention of Sjogren's syndrome. Disappointed.

nonfiction (health/cooking)
This is a topic very much in demand, but I was disappointed--just a short explanation of why she recommends these dietary changes, and lots of plugs for the author's line of products for sale. I looked back at my review on her first book and I had much the same impression then.
As for the recipes, it's unlikely that people will go to the trouble of eliminating all grains, etc. just from her paltry explanation, but if you already know for a fact that you are sensitive to x, y, and z, you might want to take a look here.
Recommended instead (and seconded by my Functional Medicine doctor): the Wahls' Protocol books by Dr. Terry Wahls. She explains her dietary recommendations much more and also provides recipes for easing your way into this restrictive diet.

one takeaway: just as big fish are generally higher in toxins than little fish (from a longer lifespan spent consuming contaminated foods), similarly it is more important to buy organic meat than to be concerned about pesticides in your vegetables (though, if you can, do both).

Also: fat-soluble formulations of curcumin are easier to absorb (than straight curcumin?)--but you have to take your pills with some sort of fat in your meal. All of the supplement companies seem to have their own special formulations (designed to increase absorption--the other helpful additive I've heard of is black pepper), so I'm not sure what works best (this article from the NIH is as clear as mud). A good practice might be to consume a little fat/oil and a little black pepper with your pills regardless of what formulation it is.

Normally I don’t rate non vegan cookbooks because I’d give them all 0 stars for obvious reasons, but this was just ridiculous. It was supposed to be a resource for those with severe health problems but a) its just basically promoting a paleo diet which is so obviously proven to not be healthy and b) she basically used the whole thing to spout off about things she sells- supplements, protein powders, etc.
