Mindjack #4

Locked Tight

Rate this book
When mindreaders run the world, being a jacker makes you a weapon.
Zeph can break open the toughest minds—or lock the weakest—which only means every Clan leader wants to own him. He did as he was told, kept his head down, and tried to shut out the screams. But when they came after his family, he hugged his kid sister goodbye and ran away to keep them safe. For two years, he’s passed as a reader. Then his family disappears, readers start changing into super jackers, and Zeph is forced to return to a city filled with jackers who hate him. To find his family, he must trick a mindware CEO into helping him, avoid a girl who knows him too well, and spy on the most powerful jacker in the state.

All without dying or revealing his abilities—or being caught in the firestorm of hate between jackers and readers that’s threatening to pull the world apart.

The bestselling Mindjack Series continues with a world of mindreaders and mindjackers as you’ve never seen it before. LOCKED TIGHT is the first of three Mindjack novels from Zeph’s perspective. (See The Locksmith for Zeph’s origin story.)

I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

I love this series! When the series ended with book 3 a few years ago I wasn't sure if I dared hope the author would return to it on day. But she did. And as soon as I got my copy of this one I decided it would be my next read. It was a pleasure to be able to return to the world of Mindjack. It took me a chapter or so to get back into this world, but for a series I haven't read for years it was easy to slip back into this world and follow Zeph's story now.

This was such a good read and I am sad I already finished it as now the wait for the next book starts. It's so well written, the story is engaging and kept my attention and there are some important messages sprinkled throughout the story. It's about a future world where there are Mindreaders and Mindjackers, but it's also about being different, being friends no matter those differences, equality and those who act out of fear instead of love, but also about those who let their actions be guided by love and understanding and a wish for everyone to get along and not let their differences divide them.

The first three books are told from Kira's point of view, she is a Mindjacker in a world where Jackers hide in the shadows and she's part of making them the mindjackers come out into the world and people hearing they exists. Zeph's story takes place in the world after that, where everyone knows Mindjackers exist and due to events in book 3 more Mindjakers pop up and the effect this has on society.

Zeph is a great character and his story is so interesting. He is a good person, but he's done a lot of bad things and does some bad things in this book, but all for the right reasons. And somewhere along the way he slowly starts to find himself, tries to find what he believes in and what to fight for and slowly discovers more about the extend of his powers. There's some amazing character development going on and it was all so well done and I can't wait to see what more he will do over the course of the the next two books. Oh and the next book will be out this summer, so that's not too long of a wait, although at the same time I wish I had my hands on the next book already.

Even though we get a different point of view in this book, we still see Kira as well and even more the effects of what happened in her books. There are scenes involving the characters from the first three books and it was interesting to see how Zeph came into contact with them and how he didn't quite trust them at first, because he doesn't know them yet. While as the reader I just wanted to tell him to trust them because I knew there's good people. But at the same time it was realistic and itnerestign how he didn't and we see those familiar characters in a whole different light. And he has to get to know them himself and find out who they are. And then towards the end of the book, so many big things happen. And I know this is going to impact what's going to happen next. And I am so sad about one of the events and what it all means for the Jackers.

Besides the already familiar characters, this book also introduces us to a host of new characters. from Zeph, to his sister, to Juliette and Sammie. I think switching the point of view to Zeph in this book was a smart move on the author's part as I feel like we get a better view of the world this way. we get to see more of it and also see how Zeph's going to play a role in this. And Zeph's such a great main character. I can't wait to read the rest of this story.

The world Susan has created in this series is so interesting. It paints a picture of a world were everyone turned into mindreaders and I love how well thought out this is and how it impacts all parts of society. And now with the addition of mindjackers we see the change and impact in the world as well. And it really feels like this is what could happen. And while it makes me sad I do think the author painted a very realistic picture and how humans would create to things like this. A lot of focus is on the society and the reaction to these changes, but there's also some focus on the technological changes because of this. And the world can be a very dark and harsh place at times, this novel really shows the dark spots as well as the bright ones.

To summarize: it was amazing to return to this series after all this time. And I am so happy the author decided to write three more books in this series. I love this series and it's been awesome to be able to return to this series. The point of view switches in this book to Zeph and it's been great to follow his point of view and story. He deals with the aftermath and the changes of what happened in book 3. There's a lot of hate and fear and that influences how people act. While it's a story about mindreaders and mindjackers, at it's core it's also a story about being different, about how fear and hate can drive actions and how in a sense people aren't all that different, it's about fighting for what's right and standing up for that even thought it's hard. And I love seeing the role Zeph will play in all of this, he's done a lot of bad things, but I believe he is a good person. There's a lot of character development in this book already when he learns things about himself and what he believes in and I can't wait to read the next two books! We see some familiar characters as well as new ones and the new perspective was really great in showing another side of this world. All in all is this a great addition in this series and I am already looking forward to book 5 and 6 as I am so curious to see where this story will go next and what Zeph's role is in all of this.

••••••••••

REVIEW: 4.5 stars--LOCKED TIGHT is the fourth full –length installment in Susan Kaye Quinn’s young adult (YA) Mindjack urban fantasy, dystopian series. LOCKED TIGHT and the prequel novella The Locksmith are the beginning of a new arc in the Mindjack series. No longer focusing on jacker Kira Moore, the series shifts focus to eighteen year old mindjacker Zephyr MacCay who has the ability to lock down or unlock the human mind.

SOME BACKGROUND: In a world where mindreading is the norm (due to decades of contaminated or purposely poisoned water) there are those with more powerful abilities than most. These are their stories of discrimination, betrayal, retribution and control. The human population developed various forms of mind-reading, mind altering and mind controlling abilities. And to complicate matters those without the ability to mindjack are purposely setting out to bring war between the have and the have-nots.

Told from first person point of view (Zeph) LOCKED TIGHT follows eighteen year old mindjacker Zephyr MacCay as he searches for his family (and thirteen year old sister) he hasn’t seen in years-a family of mindreaders whose lives were threatened by the existence of their eldest son. Zephyr has the ability to hide his abilities but a threat of another nature finds our hero caught between three potential enemies never knowing who is telling the truth or out right lies. What ensues are Zeph’s attempts to locate his sister as several warring factions battle for control of Zephyr himself.

LOCKED TIGHT is an infinitely detailed, brilliant and remarkable look at a world struggling with the fall out of chemical contamination of the human population. From mindreaders to mindjackers Susan Kaye Quinn’s MINDJACKER series looks at the dysfunctional relationship between a hierarchy of mental and physical powers, and the breakdown of society between the ‘have and have nots’. The Mindjacker series focuses on betrayal, revenge, discrimination, specieism, and the battle for control, and the potential to create a weapon of unimaginable strengths. The premise is unparalleled with a profound and innovative message as well as a frighteningly realistic look at the future where fear and anarchy reign.

Did I enjoy this exciting story of a young protagonist with special powers to break open and lock other people’s minds? Yes. Would I like him or anybody else to mess up with my mind? No. Before you answer that question for yourself, give this book a chance and read Locked Tight. It’s good to know what future may or may not bring us.

Mindjack is one of my favorite series of all time, and I don't say that lightly. HEAVY SPOILERS AHEAD so if you still want to read this and not spoil yourself, stop now!

The Mindjack Trilogy ended in such a perfect way at the end of Free Souls and I hold this story and Susan Kaye Quinn very close to my heart. When I heard she was going to continue the series with another 3 books from another perspective I was half exited and half worried. What if it didn't match up? How could she continue when it ended so well? That's probably one reason why I didn't get around to reading it for so long.
Nether the less I read it whist doing a lot of travelling and over the course of a whole day. I loved it. It was just brilliant being back in the Mindjack world with Susan's writing, I was so happy. The story was great and I loved how she progressed the world and plot. Zef's viewpoint wasn't as great to me as Kira's, but that's mostly nostalgia and preference on my part, he was still fun to read. There were new characters I liked, and I enjoyed it so much. I was so proud and thought I was foolish for doubting Susan, her writing and story telling amazing as ever.
That was until I got to the end, the spoiler as mentioned and it ruined it for me. SHE KILLED JULIAN?!?! WHAT?! I was in shock. At first I thought it was exiting and amazing and that he'd make some miraculous recovery. But he didn't. I was in so much denial that I didn't fully believe it until I started Cracked Open, the next book, and they buried him and had his funeral. Every page were he was 'dead' I was filled with dread. I mean you can call that good writing and character connection or what but it was the worst thing that could possibly happen for me. NOT JULIAN. I was so angry. It was the worst decision for the story serving nothing but to make the whole thing go from amazing to a disappointment. Right until I finished Cracked Open the book felt dull and wrong and sad without Julian in it. I didn't like the direction the story took and I'm honestly so upset.
The one thing I didn't want. For these new books to take my favorite series which ended so well and ruin it. I don't mean to sound dramatic but how can anyone thing killing Julian make any kind of improvement on the plot, and it puts such a sour taste in my mouth.
Will I read the third and last book? Maybe. Probably, because I'm in to deep now. but I won't enjoy it as I should and that makes me so so sad. Did anyone else feel this grief and disappointment too? I never wanted this from my favorite series and my one fear come to fruition. To me the Mindjack series ended at the end of Free Souls and the rest didn't happen. For my own sanity and happiness that's how I'll think of it. I wish this review was very very different and I'm sorry.

I received a copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

It is so good to be back in the mindjack world again. Of course I am from an outsider's view, but it was nice to be immersed in this story once again. We meet Zeph in this first of hopefully many more stories. Zeph has an interesting power of being able to "lock" minds. He is a jacker, but can easily showboat as a reader, which he does quite often.

Do you have to read the first three stories in the Mindjack series to read this one? No I guess not because Zeph's Story starts here except for a brief short story, The Locksmith, that was previously released. Should you read the first three books in the series? Yes they are awesome! Ok, ok, I know not a good review, but they tell the story of how the world came to be what it is in Zeph's time. Jacker's weren't a prevalent thing yet, you won't understand who some of the characters are, and all three stories are well written and loaded with action.

It was facinationg to follow Zeph on his journey instead of Kira. He is just an engaging character too, which is hard, because I loved Kira. I know his journey has just begun, and I intend to follow along just as intently as I followed Kira's.

This is a brilliant book! The first few books in this series focused on Kira, and introduced us to the world of readers and jackers. Now, we are given the story of Zeph, who was very much a background character in the previous books about Kira. It is fascinating seeing the same world but from a different perspective, particularly as Zeph does not agree with Kira's actions, but is forced by events to work with her.
I really like this author's work as she managed to write reasonably complicated stories, with different things happening, yet it is no difficulty whatsoever to follow the story with ease. I particularly enjoyed this book as I had read the previous ones, although it could be read and understood as a standalone. I would recommend reading these in order, though, and there is a novella The Locksmith giving Zeph's origin story, and further stories about Zeph. I highly recommend this series.

The book was a rollercoaster ride. It kept me hooked. Zeph has some awesome and extraordinary jacking talent. I just didn't felt the connection between him and Tessa. I don't why maybe switching between Kira's pov of story to his. .I was glad when the Kira, Anna, Julian and all the characters from the first three books came into picture. I can't get enough of them but not what happens in the end. I wished Zeph would not have came in contact with them. Ugh, the ending have messed up with my emotions lol. I just want to read the next book ASAP.
But it was an engaging read and I finished it in one sitting.

Total Score: 5/5

Summary:
All Zeph ever wanted was to live at home with his family, but that dream was blown apart when the world was told that mindjackers existed forcing him to disappear to protect his parents and sister. Now Zeph is a very special jacker whose abilities go beyond what is even normal by jacker standards forcing him to hide them to keep individuals form using him to hurt other people that is until he sees a mindreader being abused by jackers. He does the right thing saving her, but putting his own safety at risk. That one act of kindness forces him to go for help that sets in motion a series of events no one could expect. Zeph is captured and learns that his family and sister a being held captive and unless he helps them their safety can't be guaranteed. Things are not always what they seem as Zeph is forced to work for the government and he meets mindjackers and the Free thinkers who have an opposite agenda. Who is Zeph supposed to believe especially with his families lives on the line.

This was a fast paced and intricate story that help me spellbound. This is the first book in this series I have read and it won't be the last. It is my mission to read the earlier books to get caught up. This is one series that I recommend and I can't wait to find out what happens next!

Tl;dr - This book has a well-written male protagonist, Zeph, trying to track down his family in a complex social landscape of mind readers and mind jackers. The author does a good job of setting up a lot of interesting conflicts, but sometimes the immediate personal relationships that Zeph has feel sidelined for the broader struggles in the story. Definitely worth a read.

I went into this book with some skepticism, and was pleasantly surprised to find a well-developed world with interesting characters (and a functional male lead, to boot!) and a *lot* of political and social conflict resulting from everyone’s mental powers.

I was definitely out of the loop early on because I had not read any of the prior books, so some of the terminology and skills described were confusing early on. While I would have appreciated hearing more about Kira Moore, the supporting character who triggered the current state of affairs in the United States, it wasn’t totally necessary to read the prior books; I got up to speed eventually.

Zeph finds himself trying to pass for a “reader” when he has pronounced jacking skills, and I enjoyed seeing him try to navigate the stark boundaries between different groups of people. He definitely gets in over his head with the military, the jackers represented by Julian Navarro, and the peaceful protest group that his friend Tessa belongs to; Zeph is believable as a smart (but not too smart) protagonist who is pulled in many directions.

I did feel like I wanted Juliette’s and Zeph’s friendship to develop further, but it felt a little sidelined as things heated up in the story. It’s hinted that Juliette is smarter and much more competent that she seems, and I really wish that would have been explored further.

The ending of the novel was somewhat shocking, but not an overdone cliffhanger; the unexpected support Zeph received from one character piqued my interest, and I definitely want to keep up with the series.

Starts Fast and Speeds Up from There!

Fun premise: a future where some people can communicate via thoughts (Readers), while others can break into the minds of other people, and in some cases machines (Jackers). There is friction between the two “races,” along with political strife, and something akin to Apartheid.

Our first-person protagonist, Zeph, is a bit of a mutant, with abilities even beyond reading and jacking, though he carefully “passes” as a Reader to keep out of trouble.

When we first encounter Zeph, he rescues a Reader being victimized by a gang of Jackers, which forces him to flee from his job and home.

This leads to a job embedded as a bodyguard, where he must keep his Jacker abilities hidden to stay employed (and alive), all in the hopes of finding his missing family...

...which leads Zeph deeper into layers of a conspiracy so complex, the end is nowhere in sight... and Zeph finds himself a pawn in a game he never wanted to be playing in the first place.

Well-paced, engaging characters, page-Turner.

So I picked this book up because it was free on Barnes and Noble and looked interesting. Unlike most of the other reviewers here I hadn't read any of the other books or heard of the series before this. Still, I was able to catch on to the world setting and plot pretty quickly. The main problems I had with this book is it was trying to do too many things all at once. Our intrepid protagonist is trying to be a bodyguard for a rich girl and help her make secret randevous with her secret love and be a double agent all at the same time but the bodyguard plotline is only tangentally related to everything else he's doing. So the plot bounces back and forth from event to event like a bouncy ball in a very small room. It makes the story rushed and stretches believability that he's able to juggle everything at once merely by the number of hours in a day. That said, the plot is interesting of a bit predictable and there's a lot of potential for the rest of the series especially if the plot gains a bit more focus.

I loved this series more than Divergent. In fact, I love all of Susan Kaye Quinn's books. She has well-crafted characters, fascinating story worlds, and plots that keep you on the edge of your seat. All six books in the Mindjack series, her Debt Collector series and her bollypunk Royals of Dharia were all devoured in one day, two at most. She has excellent story worlds, strong character, and plots that keep you turning pages. In Mindjack there is a world where everyone can read minds and communicate telephathically, but Kira is a zero, one who seemingly can't communicate, but she finds out she is something far more powerful - a mindjacker who can not only enter another person's mind, but control them. Wonderful dystopian novel. Read them all. Mind Jack 1 Open Minds, 2 Closed Hearts, and 3 Free Souls. Then move onto 4 Locked Tight, 5 Cracked Open, 6 Broken wide which follows Zeph, who can break open the toughest minds—or lock the weakest—which only means every Clan leader wants to own him. Buy them all and enjoy the binge. There are related Novellas as well.

I love the Mindjack series and I was so excited when I heard that Susan was writing more Mindjack stories. Everything in the series so far takes the reader on an intense, unusual adventure.

Locked Tight, book #4 is more of the same. This part of the series, which will consist of 3 books total, gives us a look at Zeph's world, a world of jackers and readers. Can they get along or will they destroy each other?

The very first chapter in this book grabbed me and and the whole book had me reading late into the night. This series is just so good! I loved how we see glimpses of the previous books and characters in this series incorporated into Zeph's story. Zeph's world has to deal with the fallout from what happened in the past, as the readers and jackers change and struggle with right and wrong.

I love this whole series and will be waiting with baited breathe for more!

A little hard to follow... but repetitive so I got it.

I liked the concept once I got it. I was having a bit of a hard time before that. It’s always that a really powerful superpower goes to a super humble person and they’re reluctant to use their gift until somebody “dies” and then they’re pulling out all the stops and giving us exactly what we want. Only, there are lots of holes. I mean, I keep getting this feeling that the really good person in the story is not so good. Just read too many spy novels in my day. And then once the superpower is unleashed, there’s no more tension or mystery. So where do you go from there? Will every story after this one be the same with different players? I liked it, but it maybe is too simplistic. Or maybe I’m just old and don’t care about the love stories in this book.

Read this as a standalone not aware of series...

A pleasant surprise. I was longing for a great cyberpunk read of the Altered Carbon ilk and stumbled on this, expecting it to be a bit wishy washy.** It was not. Whilst it might not win any literary prizes, the writing was engaging, the plot gripping to the end and the protagonist well developed.

That's my favourite bit: when a character is so well written that you close the book and feel like you will recognise him if he passes you on the street, having just lived life with him for a bit.

I can see this as the next Netflix original.

** Blame the lame cover for this. Maybe targeted at a particular audience but a cover featuring an uber close-up portrait of a young man... too trashy romancy.... perhaps emulating the Gibson cover with Keanu Reeves, but let's be real.

I was very happy when Susan gave me a copy of this book. I read the first three books in the series and loved them! This is a very scary world in that everyone knows what everyone else is thinking (Readers), unless you are a Jacker. Of course, Readers fear the Jackers. Both groups have members who do unthinkable things to the others and it is terrifying in that it reminds me of Hitler style thinking with one race thinking it is better than the other out of the fear of their differences. Zeph is a great character, I love that he shows kindness and wanting to do the right thing even though his situation causes him to have to lie to and pretend he is a reader. This is a wild read that is very thought evoking and reveals the atrocities that mankind is willing to commit.

WOW! Who do you trust, the government or some wealthy businessman? I was so engrossed in the story that I rapidly read this book and it's a GOOD thing there is more and I can't wait to read the next! I liked Zeph from the start when he took off to help the girl who had been screaming in his wealthy boss's home even though there was a good chance that others would see his powers. Zep left his home once he came into his powers to keep the rest of his family safe as he knew others that want his powers would come after him, He was just the guy to defend the weak as he posed as only a reader when he was MUCH more!

About halfway through, I got fed up with the accurately portrayed 18-year-old main character's thoughts, and started speedreading/skimming to follow the plot. It's not him, it's me. I didn't like 18 yo boys when I was a teenager, and I don't particularly like them now, and Zeph's even a good kid. There's some shaky elements in the world-building that affect the believability of the plot, but not enough for me to give up on it. Likewise, while some characters are really well fleshed-out, a few are unfortunately a bit underdeveloped. Certainly, when I get through my mountain of wish-listed or freebie books, I might revisit this series.

This book was Great! Lots of feelings and lots of action (if you call mind jacking action). This book, I guess is #4 of the Mindjacking books; but I read the first Mindjack..all though I liked it, I didn't continue the series. This book was free at Amazon and like the 1st one it caught my attention, so I downloaded it. Let me tell you, this series Mindjack: Zeph #1 was soooo much better that the 1st Mindjack!...Also want to let you know...there is no reason, unless of course you want too, to read the first series. It wasn't even downloaded as #4 when I got it...so no problem there! I'm going to continue this trilogy and never look back..

In this futuristic alternative world humans have evolved to be able to read minds and share thoughts. Now there's a new threat, jackers. Jackers can actually alter minds and memories. Someone has put chemicals in the water supply which has only made the threat more real. Zeph left his family when he realized that he had changed into a jacker in the hopes of protecting them. Zeph is not just any jacker though, he's a jacker with special abilities and a conscience. He's sought after by some very powerful people and now must navigate a difficult path for the truth, for his family, for society. An interesting read to be sure.

I didn’t think much of it. I gave up after reading 49% of the first book. It just went on and on and never went anywhere. Just situation after situation of how tough life can be. Too much woe-is-me angst. It was as bad as a daily diary of regular ordinary days of trying to figure out what to wear as if the fate of peace in the Middle East depended on it. I’m giving the whole series a pass. It was just boring and you really don’t care what happens to the characters. That’s just my one opinion. I’m not a professional ridiculous.

Exceptional Series

Susan Kaye Quinn doesnt disappoint with the continuing Mindjack series. This one is from Zeph’s perspective and is exciting, thrilling and very well planned out. As usual, her characters are well fleshed out and there are so many twists and turns you will have a hard time putting it down. Don’t miss this great series about the future. SKQ makes it well worth the investment. I have already purchased the next book.

Interesting read. I was over halfway through this book when I saw that it was the 4th in the series, and I hadn’t read the others. Apparently it’s the first of Zeph’s stories though. It still made sense, except I didn’t get how he had such amazing control over his mind powers. Not sure if that’s explained in the earlier books because those are from Kira’s POV. Shrug. Still an engaging intriguing read.

Hard book to out down!

Susan Kaye Quinn has a great series going. I didn't expect the way that this 4th book progressed, so the author really surprised me with the ending. I can't wait until the 5th book comes out this summer. Note: you should definitely read THE LOCKSMITH first, if you haven't read it already.

Wow. Everyone can read minds but only some can impose their will on others - these people are called mindjackers or jackers. Jackers are feared by non-jackers and imprisoned or "cured". Zeph left home when he realised that he was a jacker. Having survived on his own, he is trying to find his family. He needs to hide his abilities while working out who to trust. Good book.

Decent read

Overall I liked the book. It had a slow start but that's fine. It works to help us understand what's going on. My main concern is that the book doesn't explain how mindreaders came about in the first place. Even if we weren't given the full story in book one, it would have been nice to get some hints. I would still recommend the book for sci-fi readers.

Great story. This was my first read from this author. I like that even though it was fourth in a series, I wasn’t lost trying to figure out what was going on. I liked the premise of mind readers and jackers. The tense parts kept me reading to see what was going to happen. It was truly enjoyable. Now I feel like I have to go back to read the first books in this series!

Another great in the Mindjack series. Zeph can get into the heads of most people and he will to keep his clan safe. Impossible to put the story away until you’re totally finished reading. Ready for more by this awesome author.
