Cassandra Clare was born to American parents in Tehran, Iran and spent much of her childhood travelling the world with her family, including one trek through the Himalayas as a toddler where she spent a month living in her father’s backpack. She lived in France, England and Switzerland before she was ten years old.

Since her family moved around so much she found familiarity in books and went everywhere with a book under her arm. She spent her high school years in Los Angeles where she used to write stories to amuse her classmates, including an epic novel called “The Beautiful Cassandra” based on a Jane Austen short story of the same name (and which later inspired her current pen name).

After college, Cassie lived in Los Angeles and New York where she worked at various entertainment magazines and even some rather suspect tabloids where she reported on Brad and Angelina’s world travels and Britney Spears’ wardrobe malfunctions. She started working on her YA novel, City of Bones, in 2004, inspired by the urban landscape of Manhattan, her favourite city. She turned to writing fantasy fiction full time in 2006 and hopes never to have to write about Paris Hilton again.
Cassie’s first professional writing sale was a short story called “The Girl’s Guide to Defeating the Dark Lord” in a Baen anthology of humor fantasy. Cassie hates working at home alone because she always gets distracted by reality TV shows and the antics of her cats, so she usually sets out to write in local coffee shops and restaurants. She likes to work in the company of her friends, who see that she sticks to her deadlines.

City of Bones was her first novel. Sword Catcher is her most recent novel.

3.5.

That's cool.

Lo peor de todo es esperar literalmente un año entre volumen y volumen, cuando se leen en 20 minutos... pero bueno, toca esperar.

I ordered this shit back in November from the place i get my books and yeah it just arrived. Can't wait to review Volume 3 which comes out next month in like a year from now.

Soooo i didn't expect to get this now and as you may know i just reread COB. I think that is enough TMI for this year.
Love: Clary's design. I got bangs like 1-2 weeks ago and she makes me wanna dye my hair red again which would be a terrible idea because i may or may not had a mental breakdown last night, purchased a blonde box dye and dyed my black hair. My roots are blonde now and making them orange will probably be a worse idea.
Hate: we didn't get enough grumpy Alec, still not into Izzy's design, the story was kinda rushed and if you pick this up without having read COB you may be a bit confused.

Look at me criticising Cassie gif

We all know by now, I am absolute trash for anything Shadowhunter related, and shock horror this is no surprise.

I loved the art work throughout but some key things for me are:
- Rat Simon, I loved the drawings they were just so perfect!
- Luke telling Clary all about the past, I loved the darkness of it, and how it spiralled into different drawings which were just so beautiful

The reason why it didn't get the full 5 stars, is because I think it missed a few things that could of been added, but I honestly can't fault the illustrations, they're all so beautiful!

I need volume 3 soon plzzzz :)

I loved the first one, so I’m not entirely surprised I love this installation in the series too. Clary and her friends continue to search for the cup and lots of crazy things happen!! I just adore the way the characters look!! The art is spot on!!

I was hooked from the beginning and couldn’t put it down. Without giving too many details, there’s vampires, werewolves, and creatures galore!!! Lots of major action and battling. Some sweet moments too. And it ends on a total cliffhanger so I hope you have the next book ready if you ready this one!!

I highly recommend this to those who love the shadowhunters, the Mortal Instruments, or good graphic novels. Of course, you have to have read the first one and whatnot, but you know.

The best part of reading this was seeing all the concept art and realizing I've imagining everything wrong.

Romance and revelations aplenty in this exciting installment! Definitely didn't see so many of the twists coming; kinda makes me wish I'd read the original series first 😂 Very interested to see where Clace goes next 👀 Rat Simon is soooo cute and Magnus Bane is damn 🔥

I liked this a lot better than the last one! Also, the way Valentine was drawn is exactly how I picture him in my head.

I swear I think Clary got shorter in each panel she appeared in. 😂
I loved the original story and I just adore seeing it come to life. And I am also so here for that extra Malec scene! + Rat Simon was adorable.
The art is just lovely and fits the story perfectly. I only have two complaints:
-I feel like some parts of the graphic novel didn’t really explain aspects of the story fully, or as clearly as it could have. The graphic novels are definitely more so for the fans of the original series so it really doesn’t effect us as we already know everything from the novel. However there may be readers who only pick up the graphic novels and find themselves confused by unclear explanations.
-Isabelle. I’m sorry, I’m just not a big fan of the way she’s drawn. I think everyone else looks amazing, but just the way she’s portrayed doesn’t seem like Isabelle to me. I’ve tried really hard to like it, but I just can’t. I’ve had a problem with it since the first graphic novel.

Another awesome graphic novel in the Mortal Instruments series. A terrific addition to the Shadowhunter collection in general and definitely something every shadowhunter fan needs in their own personal collection! Cassandra Jean's artwork is so good and these graphic novels really capture what the books are all about; just love it! Can't wait until Volume 3 publishes!

This volume was, for me, better than the first as there wasn't as much setting up the plot in this one. As someone who knows the story of the mortal instruments quite well it got a bit repetitive reading information I already knew. I enjoyed the plot of this graphic novel and found it a more enjoyable read.

The story continues from Magnus's party. Clary is reeling from the fact that her mother had her memories erased and that Simon is turned into a rat. Valentine has kidnapped her mom to question her about the Mortal Cup, and Clary is determined to rescue her with or without her new Shadowhunter friends.

The second half of City of Bones is quite messy - not in terms of writing but in terms of the relationships and the characters' pasts. This messiness is properly illustrated by Cassandra Jean. Again, I'm quite impressed that the graphic novel follows the original novel exactly. However, to be honest, it doesn't capture the emotions correctly. And I don't think it's the fault of the illustrator; it's the inherent limitation of graphic novels. They can't portray every emotion as a novel can.

In this graphic novel, after each chapter, Cassandra Jean illustrated different Shadowhunter attires and weapons with labeling and comments. It was cool as I hadn't really imagined the outfits that accurately while I was reading the book.

I actually can't get over the fact that Valentine is not bald. It has been some time since I have reread the books, but I had watched a few episodes of the Shadowhunters TV series, so that cast is still fresh in my mind.

As for the next graphic novel, I would love to see more of Magnus, Alec, and Isabelle - I am excited that City of Ashes features more of them, and the next volume will be the first part of it.

I love graphic novels and something about how simply Cassandra Jean draws everything really appeals to me. That sounded like an insult... I swear it wasn't.

listen I know people always hate on Jace and Clary, but I love them a lot, okay? They have both been through so much, but they are such strong and kind people, and they deserve love too.

also, found family. found family. found family.

3.5 stars.
This is completely subjective but I wasn't a huge fan of some of the illustrations. Raphael looked way off - where were his curls? - and Clary too young.
I also would have included more scenes and/or information.
And my final critique: there were some continuity errors which I think could have been avoided.
I'm nevertheless looking forward to volume three because it's nice to see such a different version of The Mortal Instruments.

Cassandra Jesns artwork just makes everything better.

(I’ll still never understand how any publisher was like “yeah let’s do it” when someone pitched them an idea to write a story that has (fake) incest for two books)
