Jenny Harris is shaken awake by her panic stricken boyfriend, Joseph. Her baby daughter is asleep on her chest. "We've got to go!" Joseph screams. They quickly leave their hotel room, leaving all their belongings behind.

Jenny and Joseph are being chased. The persurer are indiscriminate and deadly. Detective George Elms is investigating a separate crime about an elderly woman who had been shot in the stomach during a robbery. Is there a link between the two incidents? This is a fast paced, gripping, page turning edge of your seat read. It is a fast paced from the first page. The author certainly knows how to pull you in and not let you go. I read this book in a few short hours. I could not put it down.

I would like to thank Joffe Books and the author Charlie Gallagher for my ARC in exchange for an honest review

Author (and detective) Charlie Gallagher’s novel, "Then She Ran" is another involving fictional detective, George Elms. This time around, the story gets off to a cracking start when Jenny Harris is suddenly awoken by her boyfriend, Joseph. With their baby daughter asleep on Jenny’s chest she is panicked into obeying Joseph’s order. We all know that panic is contagious and Jenny hurries to wrap the baby and get out of their hotel, leaving their belongings behind. The reason for Joseph’s panic soon becomes clear when they are pursued but Jenny still doesn’t know who her pursuers are or what has landed her lover in this predicament. When Joseph falls, he manages to shout to Jenny to run and she does. Meanwhile, George Elms is investigating another crime. An elderly woman has been shot in the stomach during a violent robbery. She is left for dead in her home, her husband confused and devastated. Both cases prove complex and with ongoing problems in his private life, George makes a serious misstep. But eventually, he gets his mind back in focus and he discovers a link between both crimes. Solve one, solve the other – on the other hand, if he fails in one, he fails in both.

As a serving officer of ten years and a detective investigating serious offences, you would expect Charlie Gallagher to know his stuff when it comes to police procedure and this is evident throughout this crime thriller. He manages to hook your interest from the start and even when the story settles down as the investigation is ongoing, there is sufficient intrigue to keep you wondering where it is all going to lead. While I note that some reviewers have found George Elms a flawed character, I don’t have a problem with that. Not all detectives are like Hercule Poirot or Sherlock Holmes. As with all good murder mysteries there is a twist in the tale. "Then She Ran" is an engaging read.

Another new author for me, and a real life policewoman/detective Charlie Gallagher.

Charlie Gallagher has been a serving UK police officer for ten years. During that time he has had many roles, starting as a front-line response officer, then a member of a specialist tactical team and is currently a detective investigating serious offences.

Discover a gripping crime thriller which will have you gripped from the explosive beginning to one of the most surprising endings of the year.

Great pace, great shocks, a thrilling action well paced story, with a great lead character in Inspector George Elms. Shocks, did I mention some massive twists you do not expect.

Realistic police procedures especially as the story is told by a real policewoman.

Another author for me to follow, and another author to add to collection of great British authors

Perfect for fans of Kimberley Chambers, Damien Boyd, Rachel Abbott, Patricia Gibney, Mark Billingham, Angela Marsons and Robert Bryndza.

Jenny Harris is woken by her boyfriend in the early morning hours, panic stricken, he tells her to grab their baby, they have to leave NOW! He ushers her where she sees the men who are coming after them. She sees her boyfriend killed in front of her .. his last word to her was RUN!

So Jenny ran .. and ran ... and the men are still after her. She has presence of mind to get her baby to safety. And then she runs some more. A kind gentleman offers to help her ... she sees him murdered in front of her. Jenny keeps running. Anyone who seems to help her in any way winds up dead. Who are these people and why do they want her dead?

Detective George Elms is investigating a separate crime. Someone has murdered an elderly woman in the doorway of her own home. Her husband of 62 years doesn't remember much ..only someone wanting the money. What money?

Well written, this is a fast-paced, breath-taking crime thriller. THEN SHE RAN is 5th in the Langthorne Police Series but is easily read as a stand-alone. The characters are credible and finely drawn. Elms is a very good detective, his mind constantly working on whatever case is before him. In this one, his personal life gets in the way of his usual clear thinking ... and he makes mistakes.

I highly recommend this book, and the series, to anyone who likes crime fiction.

Many thanks to the author / Joffe Books / Netgalley for the advanced copy of this crime thriller. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

This review is my personal, honest, unbiased opinion but I do work with Joffe Books and received an advance copy of this book so if you prefer not to read on that is fine.

George Elms is back with a bang. The book starts with a couple running away from an armed gang. Joseph knows who is chasing them but Jenny doesn’t have a clue what she has got caught up in. Add in the mix a 4 month old baby and we know we are in for an emotional, action packed ride through another case in the life of George Elms.

I didn’t expect to be disappointed and I wasn’t. I love George even more with every book I read. I do need to read books 1-3 in the Langthorne series so I was missing some of the background to the breakup of his marriage. This story lets us see a more emotional side to George as he struggles with his wife moving on and his daughter coming back into his life.

Jenny is married to Joseph but doesn’t know what she has got involved in. Suddenly they are on the run with their 4 month old daughter being chased by a gang with guns happily shooting anyone who gets in the way. What has this got to do with a robbery gone wrong leaving an old lady dead in the kitchen and her husband of 62 years devastated.

Charlie Gallagher has an absolutely perfect way of creating characters that are unique and complex. With Jenny he has managed to get across a young mother's determination to survive against all the odds. I witnessed this in RUTHLESS and again he has excelled himself and managed to get that determination and will to live into the character with a skill I have never seen from any other author.

This is a fast moving read with plenty of action. The characters develop well. I thought I had the measure of George from the previous books but I saw a new side to him in this book. Emily Ryker is another old favourite the two make a formidable team and she also develops even more. The new characters are all realistic and believable. All in all I LOVE this book it was a riveting read from the very first page right through to the absolute shocker of an ending that I, certainly, didn’t see coming.

Charlie Gallagher just gets better and better. Complex characters, adrenaline pumping suspense and an emotional element that had me in tears. Absolutely brilliant Charlie - keep them coming.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for a review copy of Then She Ran, a police procedural featuring George Elms of the Langthorne police.

Jenny doesn't understand why her boyfriend, Joe, is hustling her out their hotel room and into the car, nor why they are being shot at but she does understand his command to run so she does and keeps going. With most of Langthorne's finest occupied with this incident it is left to George Elms to investigate the fatal shooting of Janice Wingmore during a botched robbery at her isolated farm.

Wow, what a high octane, exhilarating read. I thoroughly enjoyed Then She Ran and was so glued to the pages I read it in one sitting. The novel is told alternately by Jenny and George as both try to work out what is going on in their separate situations, George with his case and Jenny with why someone would want to kill her. The plotting is excellent as Mr Gallagher gradually brings the two cases together in several unexpected and devious ways - the twists involved are clever and unforeseeable. Most of the action surrounds Jenny as she fights for her life whereas George's case is more information based.

I really enjoy Mr Gallagher's writing which is a mixture of procedure and pulse pounding action. This novel is no different with plenty of guns and car chases on the one hand and George tearing up the rule book to get a result on the other. It is violent and probably overdone but the basic motives behind the crimes are realistic and believable.

George Elms is burying himself in work because his private life is not going well. As a result he is a bit of a workaholic and very probably an absolute pain to his colleagues in his quest for justice. He is manipulative and fights dirty to get the information he needs as in his mind nobody else's priorities take precedence over his. Team player? Definitely not. This makes him sound like a ghastly character but, in fact, he's very likeable with his overriding concern for the victims.

Then She Ran is a great read which I have no hesitation in recommending.

RUN - That was what her Husband Joseph screamed at her as he lay dying in the shot out wreckage of their rental car.So Jenny Harris grabs their four month old daughter from the back seat and runs for her life. Confused and terrified, she has no idea what is going on,who is chasing her and why.

Meanwhile newly promoted Detective Inspector George Elms has been sent to investigate the fatal shooting of Janice Wingmore in her country kitchen after a confrontation with some violent thieves.

As George struggles to figure out the link between the two cases whilst dealing with his own personal issues,he knows that he must move fast.Jenny is in deadly danger and time is running out.

The opening chapter of this thriller is action packed, intense and gripping after which the story continues in chapters that alternate between George's investigations and Jenny's desperate attempts to out run her pursuers and stay alive. I really liked brave, feisty Jenny and was totally hooked in and rooting for her as she found herself in some seriously intense life threatening situations. The people who were chasing Jenny were sinister and cold hearted, they didn't care who got hurt during their mission to capture her.I didn't like George Elms character during this story.Yes I know personal issues can affect your behaviour but his whining, self pity and miss treatment of others especially Emily Ryker made him not very likeable at times. Being distracted by his personal issues also caused him to make serious mistakes during his investigations.Although I felt the conclusion of the murder at the farmhouse was very sad,I felt that parts of this story line dragged at times and I did figure out quite early in the book who had shot and killed Janice Wingmore although I was wrong about the how and why.

So in the end I was left with mixed feelings about this book.Jenny`s chapters are definitely action packed, intense and gripping and I did enjoy this book enough to finish it.I just didn't enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed Missing. Hopefully by the next book George will have sorted his head out and be a bit more competent and sympathetic.

Many thanks to Joffe books for a arc of this book via Netgalley in exchange for a honest review

This is a brilliant book, which starts off with a bang and an exhilarating pace, which never drops off until the end.

The story starts off with a man and woman running away from a gang, with their little girl.  The action hots up with another murder of an old lady, where we are left wondering how the two murders are linked, if at all.

The characters are really well written and have a great depth to them that you don't always find in crime books, and the plot line was brilliant, with lots of lovely twists that I didn't know where the story was going from one moment to the next.

I am really starting to like Charlie's books and will be going through his back catalogue to start getting to know the complete back story of George as I have only read End Game before.

Overall this is yet another great book by Charlie and I can't wait to read more by him.

Book 5 of the Langthorne Police series with Detective Inspector George Elms.
I like George Elms - I like the way he works and the way he rides roughshod over others to help the victims of crime. He may be a maverick but, to me, that makes him all the more attractive and I think his wife is a rather selfish person. She uses his daughter as leverage to get her own way and that is not an attractive trait.
But to the story - what can I say? I was gripped from the first page when Jenny is hustled from their hotel room by her partner Joseph because he knows they are in danger. He tells her to run and she does - and keeps on running, clutching their baby daughter, to escape from the fusillade of shots which surround Joseph and she has no idea why this is happening.
George is dealing with the murder of an old woman in her own home where burglars have broken in, demanding 'the money' but the two cases come together in a perfectly-intertwined scenario which leads to the solving of both crimes - and an ending which hit me in the solar plexus. I cannot wait for the next book in the series where I hope George finds a new love interest with someone who understands his job and his character and they can be mutually supportive.
This novel is that very rare kind of book - a great storyline, great character development, rolling action and a surprise at the end. More please Mr Gallagher!

Jenny doesn’t understand why her boyfriend wakes her up in a panic, demanding her to run with their daughter, that is until people start shooting at her.

While everyone is out looking for Jenny, newly promoted DI George Elms is dealing with a personal issue, the return of his estranged wife and his daughter. When he is tasked to investigate the shooting of an old woman on an isolated farm his head is not really on his work. Can George pull it together?

This is the fifth book in the series and the first I’ve read by Charlie Gallagher, which is probably not ideal but I can safely say this can be read as a stand-alone without feeling lost or having the previous books spoilt for you.

Wow, Charlie Gallagher just drops you right into the thick of the action which doesn’t let up at all. I enjoyed the fact it wasn’t overly complicated or had too many characters, a problem I’ve been seeing in crime fiction of late, just a great fast paced thrilling read. Also as Charlie is a real life police officer, it feels really authentic without getting bogged down in detail.

I have to be honest at first I didn’t really warm to George Elms that much. I understand he’s under a lot of pressure after being promoted and from his estranged wife but sometimes I felt like giving him a good smack and telling him to stop behaving so badly. By the end though, he got me on side.

Overall an action packed read and a must for fans of police procedurals.

Thank you NetGalley and Jorge Books for the eARC.
Jenny Harris is staying at a hotel in Cover with her 4-month old baby and her partner Joseph. Joseph wakes her and tells her they have to leave, NOW... As they flee in their rental car, they are attacked by men who shoot up the car and Joseph is hit. Jenny grabs her baby and runs for their lives. She finds a safe spot to leave her baby and goes on the run, having no idea why these men want to kill her.
Detective George Elms is finally meeting his wife, who left him a year ago, taking their daughter. The meeting doesn't go well at all and George is upset and furious. As others of his team investigate the shooting involving Jenny, George is sent to the scene of a fatal shooting at a farm. The farmer's wife was shot in the stomach and killed during an attempted robbery. In the process of the investigation George realizes the two cases are linked, but how and why?
I was in two minds reading this book; Jenny's story was edge-of-your-seat intense, I worried about her and her baby the whole time. George on the other hand was not that likeable in my opinion, his private life and how he handled it was irritating. It affected his work badly, I think; it made him seem weak. As much as this was a pageturner, I can only give it 3 1/2 stars. Hopefully he will be a bit more stable and sympathetic in the next in the series.

I only paid $0.99 for the book and I wasn't sure what to expect. But I'm happy to report that I wasn't disappointed. Very good read. Honestly, author/publisher needs to hike the price a little bit. They are leaving money on the table.

Anyway, good read and will look to read more from the author.

"Terrific story"

This was more than a police procedural. A lot more, with far more detail than the standard model. Somehow, that didn't slow the incessant pace of the story. George Elms has more issues than Reader's Digest, but he gets the job done any way he can. He's surrounded by a solid cast of characters and there are several twists along the way to keep you guessing. Loved it.

Good book

Yeah this was an enjoyable read. A real thriller. It starts off with Joseph waking his wife Jenny and telling her they have to run. They have a baby daughter Isobel. The take to the road but after a few minutes their car is peppered with gunfire. Joseph stops the car and tells Jenny to run. She takes the baby and flees. Joseph is injured. She is followed by a line gunman and gets nicked by a shot. She leaves the baby on a policeman 's car and flees into the night. It was a good book there is a link to another murder. Good job Charlie Gallagher📕👍

Fast-paced crime thriller/police procedural featuring Detective Inspector George Elms of the Major Crimes Unit based out of Langthorne Police Station. In this standalone novel by a prolific author of the Langthorne Police Series, a young woman, Jenny, escapes after a shootout on the main roads in Dover kills her boyfriend. She leaves her 4-month-old baby on the bonnet of a police car and runs for her life.

While most of the force is occupied with figuring out the details of the shooting spree, George is tasked with investigating the case of a home invasion robbery gone wrong. The elderly couple was awakened by masked men and the woman, Janice, has been killed by a shotgun blast. Her husband of 60 plus years, Stan Wingmore, is devastated. George attempts to get the information he needs and eventually it comes to light that these two cases may be related.

Lots of action and typical police investigative teamwork though George tends to want to handle everything quickly and on his own. He's definitely a maverick and has personal problems that make him keep on working the case rather than going home on his own. A couple of other team members are mentioned but their characters are never really fully developed, they are more sidekicks that George uses to get what he needs to solve the crimes. The results are a bit unexpected with a little twist toward the end.

Thank you to NetGalley and Joffee Books for the e-book ARC to read and review.

I can say without a shadow of a doubt that this book has started with a heart-wrenching bang of intensive suspense. It brought tears to my eyes for Joseph and Jenny and their little baby daughter Isobel aggressively pushed into a fatal situation and Jenny still none the wiser as to why. The perpetrators are trying their very best to kill Jenny and anyone they considered in their path in order to achieve their goal. With all this happening the police department newly promoted George needed to rest his personal life on the shelf although its all messed up and get back into the game for it was all hands on deck. The sh-t is hitting the fan blades and it ain’t missing none. A true fast pace action suspense, that is quite exciting, with an all-consuming intensive storyline that bites in regions you don’t want to mention. I LOVE THIS BOOK, no joke it’s awesome.

I always enjoy books by this author, they just keep getting better. George Elms is now an inspector with Langhorne police and the latest case starts with a shooting and a woman on the run with her baby. Plenty action, twists and turns and an ending I didn't see coming. Charlie Gallagher is one of the best writers of police procedurals today. It's a 4 stars from me. Thank you Net Galley for my copy.

Gripping Crime Thriller

I was totally gripped from the first line, 'Jenny, honey, we've got to go now!' From then on they are forced to split up and there follow four acion-packed days on the run for Jenny., Joseph and their four month old baby.  Jenny has no idea who wants to kill her or why. Her, several, escapes and near death exoeriences are realistic and thrilling.

On the other hand we will be following the police investigation, which, in spite of some important blunders, is meticulously and realistically carried out.

I enjoyed the insight to police procedure and to the points where it crossed personal boundaries, and the people involved in the crimes became of real personal interest to the investigators, especially PI George Elms, a complex, clever man, who makes up for his errors due to his dedication and resourcefulness.

The characters were fully fleshed to the point that I could see them and understand how they felt.

The plot was perfect. Two separate crimes, both seemingly unrelated and inexplicable, gradually merge.

I enjoy reading realistic, cleverly plotted crime stories, like 'Then She Ran', where all the threads are plausibly and cleverly tied up at the end. A bit like a happy ever after romance, although there is no romance in this novel, and yet there is a great deal of love, real, unrequited, misdirected and tragic.

I wouldl definitely recommend Charlie Gallagher's books to lovers of thrilling, procedural, crime fiction.

He knows what he's writing about, because he's been working with UK police force, and his first hand knowledge comes across in this novel.

I will definitely be reading more novels by this author.

I enjoyed this so much I read it in one sitting. This book had an aura of real authority and confidence in the writing, no great surprise really as this police procedural is written by a man who served as a police officer for 10 years. It really showed in the writing with the added benefit of good quality writing too! Win, win! The characters were good, the central one was DI George Elms aided by Emily Ryker and for once they had a decent boss, Whittaker. The setting is Kent, particularly in and around Dover. The start of the book was excellent with a chase and shooting that drew me effortlessly in to the story. There are two strands to the story but they eventually converge. The pace was good throughout and the ending was excellent. I shall definitely read more by Charlie Gallagher and would highly recommend to people who like this genre.

Gripping

Started off at a cracking pace and kept me engaged throughout. I took off a star because I found it fairly implausible that a woman who had only had a baby 4 months ago would be able to evade criminals as successfully as Jenny. Also the author depicts Inspector George Elms as intuitive, resourceful and compassionate, yet he doesn't pick up on a terrified woman being held hostage in an elevator and doesn't connect the dots between the two crimes. Otherwise a really good read.

Having never read anything by this author I was pleased to be given a copy to read by Net Galley. Then She ran features Police Detective George Elms. A no nonsense determined copper who will do what it takes to catch the villain. Throughout the story we follow George as he works hard to solve the crime, whilst struggling with domestic events in his personal life.
The book starts somewhat like a formula one race, fast off the starting line and continues with plenty of action and twists and turns. What initially appears as 2 separate crimes become linked leading George to a final arrest. What Gallagher lacks in some of his character development he more than makes up for with fast paced action and a well written storyline which kept me hooked. I got caught up with the fast paced action, with didn't relent. Gallagher leads us down a path where the reader begins to form a suspect as does George, then with just as much pace and drama the story twists until we cannot guess who is going to be arrested for the killings. A great read that left me wanting to read more by Gallagher
