The Mistborn Saga #3.5

Mistborn: Secret History

Rate this book
Mistborn: Secret History is a companion story to the original Mistborn trilogy. As such, it contains HUGE SPOILERS for the books Mistborn (The Final Empire), The Well of Ascension, and The Hero of Ages. It also contains very minor spoilers for the book The Bands of Mourning. Mistborn: Secret History builds upon the characterization, events, and worldbuilding of the original trilogy. Reading it without that background will be a confusing process at best. In short, this isn’t the place to start your journey into Mistborn. (Though if you have read the trilogy—but it has been a while—you should be just fine, so long as you remember the characters and the general plot of the books.) Saying anything more here risks revealing too much. Even knowledge of this story’s existence is, in a way, a spoiler. There’s always another secret.

I’m Brandon Sanderson, and I write stories of the fantastic: fantasy, science fiction, and thrillers.

Defiant, the fourth and final volume of the series that started with Skyward in 2018, comes out in November 2023, capping an already book-filled year that will see the releases of all four Secret Projects: Tress of the Emerald Sea, The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and Secret Project Four (with its official title reveal coming October 2023). These four books were all initially offered to backers of the #1 Kickstarter campaign of all time.

November 2022 saw the release of The Lost Metal, the seventh volume in the Mistborn saga, and the final volume of the Mistborn Era Two featuring Wax & Wayne. The third era of Mistborn is slated to be written after the first arc of the Stormlight Archive wraps up.

In November 2020 we saw the release of Rhythm of War—the fourth massive book in the New York Times #1 bestselling Stormlight Archive series that began with The Way of Kings—and Dawnshard (book 3.5), a novella set in the same world that bridges the gaps between the main releases. This series is my love letter to the epic fantasy genre, and it’s the type of story I always dreamed epic fantasy could be. The fifth volume, Wind and Truth, is set for release in fall 2024.

Most readers have noticed that my adult fantasy novels are in a connected universe called the Cosmere. This includes The Stormlight Archive, both Mistborn series, Elantris, Warbreaker, and various novellas available on Amazon, including The Emperor’s Soul, which won a Hugo Award in 2013. In November 2016 all of the existing Cosmere short fiction was released in one volume called Arcanum Unbounded. If you’ve read all of my adult fantasy novels and want to see some behind-the-scenes information, that collection is a must-read.

I also have three YA series: The Rithmatist (currently at one book), The Reckoners (a trilogy beginning with Steelheart), and Skyward. For young readers I also have my humorous series Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians, which had its final book, Bastille vs. the Evil Librarians, come out in 2022. Many of my adult readers enjoy all of those books as well, and many of my YA readers enjoy my adult books, usually starting with Mistborn.

Additionally, I have a few other novellas that are more on the thriller/sci-fi side. These include the Legion series, as well as Perfect State and Snapshot. There’s a lot of material to go around!

Good starting places are Mistborn (a.k.a. The Final Empire), Skyward, Steelheart,The Emperor’s Soul, and Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians. If you’re already a fan of big fat fantasies, you can jump right into The Way of Kings.

I was also honored to be able to complete the final three volumes of The Wheel of Time, beginning with The Gathering Storm, using Robert Jordan’s notes.

Sample chapters from all of my books are available at brandonsanderson.com—and check out the rest of my site for chapter-by-chapter annotations, deleted scenes, and more.

(I read this in Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection)

4.5/5 stars

Just brilliant. No full review from me for this amazing novella, everything about this book can be considered as spoilers for the Mistborn saga. There's always another secret. That's all.

Side note:
This novella is filled with major spoilers for the original Mistborn trilogy and minor spoilers for The Bands of Mourning. Although you can read this novella immediately after you finished the first Mistborn trilogy, for the purpose of maximum enjoyment, I highly recommend you to read it only AFTER you finished both Mistborn trilogy and The Bands of Mourning. By doing this, you'll have a better understanding of Sanderson's Cosmere universe, and it would allow you to enjoy this novella further.

"There's always another secret."

This is overall going to be a very short review with A LOT of quotes!! so there's gonna be two sides

The spoiler free review:
Read it! its so worth it and its perfect. These 170 pages were everything that I could ever ask for and read it after book 3 not before because it'll hit harder and it contains major spoilers, but it was brilliant.

Spoilery review:

OH MY GOD!! I knew it!! I refused to believe that the ending of the final empire was Kelsiers fate so I picked this up and I was in awe and I loved it so much, I think this had one of the highest cosmere connectivity, with shards being mentioned, with adonalsium being mentioned, with Kelsier trying to destroy with Ruin and bond with Preservation. I missed Kelsier and knowing he's alive and gonna be in the next books gave me sm more hope, I loved it! Kelsier and Preservations bond was so cute and the wayh he called him Fuzz<3 it had so many moment that put a smile on my face and gave me the closure that I needed and broadened the picture so much more! it was definitely needed. Also it was so clever like the way Brandon wrote the og trilogy in a way where this book fits and when you read it and look back and say OHHH THATS WHAT HAPPENED?? and you're holding your head ahh that feeling was perfect. No one does it like Brando Sando<33

Some quotes (also spoilery)

“Oh, hell,” Kelsier said. “There’s actually a God?”
“Yes.”
Kelsier decked him.
It was a good, clean punch, thrown from the shoulder while he brought his other arm up to block a counter strike.”
.
“She embraced him, and he found himself weeping. The daughter he'd never had, the little child of the streets. Though she was still small, she'd outgrown him. And she loved him anyway. He held his daughter close against his own broken soul.” (MY HEARTTT)
.
“Ideas are never original," Kelsier said. "Only one thing is."
"And what is that?
"Style," Kelsier said.
Then he punched Ruin across the face.” (Kelsier punching these shards will never not be funny)
.
“Thievery was the most authentic form of flattery."
.
“If there was one thing Kelsier was good at, it was lying to himself.”
.
“He doesn’t know as much as he thinks,” Preservation whispered. “That is his weakness. The . . . weakness . . . of all clever men”
.
“Kelsier would not back down. He would not let this thing intimidate him again. He’d already killed one god. The second murder was always easier than the first."
.
“He wanted to go. He hurt so much. He wanted it all to end, to go away. Everything. He just wanted it to stop."

~~~
Time to reread my favorite novella of all time and because I miss Kelsier sm +It's always fun to listen to Hodas theories and push her towards the wrong direction 😝
This is such an incredibly clever resurrection of storytelling. The Mistborn trilogy is driven by mysterious powers; it's not until the end that we were given the full facts. Or were we? In this Sanderson reveals more of what happened beyond the mists.
Originally, when I picked this up I wasn’t expecting much. In fact, I’ve been putting off reading it ever since it was released. My expectations were low. Brandon Sanderson has written some truly awesome novels, but he also has released a few things that probably didn’t need to be published. Things like those little novellas he released in between books. They never add much to the series in question. Some of them are okay, but the majority seem to be for the purpose of creating hype and a bit of money. When I saw this, I thought it was pretty much the same thing. So, I didn’t read it for a very long time.
Big mistake.
Without a doubt, this is one of the best things Brandon Sanderson has written. The mechanisms behind what happened in the original Mistborn trilogy are complex and difficult to grasp at the best of times, but this complicates things even more. And this is, of course, a very good thing. There’s lots of secret magic behind what happens, and this book helps to explain where some of it came from. Its source is both familiar and unfamiliar. It is something readers know well but not in its current form.
When reading The Mistborn Trilogy, I was always surprised by a certain character's lack of presence and when they reappeared towards the final moments of the last book, I was surprised to how it actually happened. The answers are in here. Well answers to these questions, but, of course, such things only raise more questions. Now that probably sounded all a bit cryptic, but I don’t want to give any spoilers away! All I really can say is that if you’re a fan of the original trilogy, you simply have to go and read this because it adds so much to the story.
Trust me, you won’t regret it. Part of me wishes all this material was in the final two books. It could have worked. They would have been considerably longer, but these chapters would have slotted perfectly into the main narrative. Perhaps Sanderson hadn’t figured it all out yet, perhaps his editor told him no, either way this is so important in understanding the ending of The Mistborn Trilogy. They need to be read alongside each other.
"The end was not the end. Kelsier smiled again."
Another novella that didn't really feel like a novella, but a whole new story! I'm surprised that Sanderson didn't try and save all this for a book later on.
It turns out that Secret History is the entry I've been looking for since I began reading Mistborn. Obviously a lot went unsaid by the end of Era 1 trilogy, and I had assumed back then that they'll be revealed in Era 2. However, with Wax and Wayne's adventure belonging in a different timeline, and Eleventh Metal novella also being a very short entry, Secret History was to be the next logical choice... which finally delivered some of the answers I was looking for. But what was more surprising to me was how much on Cosmere has been revealed here. You get a detailed backstory on how the shards came in to play, and what else is going around in other planets, plus a deep dive in to the realm theory!
"Once you step behind the curtain and see the actors as the people they are, it becomes harder to pretend the play is real."
This is the first novella from Cosmere I'm going to recommend that the readers MUST read. Sure, most of the novella's were fun, but Secret History fills some major gaps, and appears to be important for future entries.
"Reality isn't particularly healthy for a man's ego."
5 Do the Impossible Stars ✰✰✰✰✰
Super impromptu buddy reading with my fellow Sandersonitus sufferers at Buddies Books & Baubles
THIS IS WHY BRANDON SANDERSON IS A WRITING GENIUS! Again this is the fangirl section skip to the next paragraph for the important stuff. Only BS spends 10 years on a novella to give us some behind the scenes stuff from Mistborn 1-3 AND it all fits like it could have been in the original story. Only he could keep it secret for that long and then surprise his fans with a little extra something the same day he released another book. AMAZING and I am again in awe, Shadows of Self came out in October to be followed by Bands of Mourning in January, this Secret History novella and we get Calamity in February *bows to the master of getting stuff done* *scowls at Patrick Rothfuss and George R R Martin* you guys know why.
When should you read this in the series? Even though it says 6.5 if I were starting from scratch I’d read it directly after The Hero of Ages. Do Not under any circumstances read it before that as there are spoilers everywhere. You might spoil a smidge of something in Bands of Mourning but I think it is pretty minor and not a big deal and I would have loved to have this to read directly after The Hero of Ages.
Things to *squee* about: there were a lot
I’m going to give props to the fans and readers of Mistborn because I came into the series late and there is a huge thing that happens in the Final Empire that everyone I knew who had already read it totally kept under wraps and so I was extremely surprised and while heartbreaking it made the story that much greater.
In a Secret History there are so big reveals as to what is going on behind the scenes and it is AMAZING. As preservation is losing his battle to Ruin we get to really see what was going on in a different realm…the cognative realm between the gods.
Then we go out kicking and screaming,” ____ said. “You and me, we’re a team.”
Preservation seemed to condense, his form pulling itself together, threads reweaving. “A team. Yes. A crew.”
“To do the impossible.”
“Defy reality,” Preservation whispered. “Everyone always said you were insane.”
And then there are some worldhoppers running around….I counted three and even though he was called something else Hoid was one of them. But then there was Khriss who had some very interesting information about God.
The Shards,” Khriss said, drawing ____’s attention, “are not God, but they are pieces of God. Ruin, Preservation, Autonomy, Cultivation, Devotion . . . There are sixteen of them.”
“Sixteen,” ______ breathed. “There are fourteen more of these things running around?”
“The rest are on other planets.”
“Other . . .” _____ blinked. “Other planets.”
“Ah, see,” Nazh said. “You’ve broken him already, Khriss.
Well now Sanderson’s official fan page The 17th Shard makes way more sense to me. But still I liked the little bit of time we got with Khriss and the information that she had to impart.
But some of my favorite parts were seeing little bits of the original trilogy from a different perspective. I had a few questions sometimes throughout Mistborn 1-3 about what Preservation was doing and why a few scenes happened a certain way, but with this Novella it totally makes more sense. The original trilogy is totally complete with just what is in it but this added a new layer and depth like her is what Sanderson was thinking but he can’t tell you that since it would give too much away.
Still it was so great to revisit some of my favorite characters like Vin, Elend, Spook and Sazed even if they are just mostly in the periphery. But don't let that fool you this is a brand new story not just a rehashing of the original.
New people, or are they old people. See this is where I wasn’t sure if I’ve seen glimpses of the Ire before or if that is new. They sorta reminded me a little of Shardsmar from The Stormlight Archives but maybe not. Either way it was a cool addition to see them on Skadrial.
This opens up so many possibilities and I really can’t wait to see how this plays into some of the upcoming books in the Mistborn World.
“There’s always another secret.”
Okay, so I completely and promptly started to lose my ever loving mind when I realized that this novella was going to star Kelsier in the in-between. Then, seeing his death again, and from his point of view, I was completely rebroken all over again.
But seeing this original trilogy take place quickly in Kelsier's perspective was something that I never expected and completely loved. And seeing his interactions with Preservation were something of magic. It also helped explain a lot, like the scene when Elend was stabbed at the well. Oh my God, I have no words for what this amazing new perspective gave me. And how the earthquakes were from Kelsier and Ruin fighting!? Oh my Lord. Who did Brandon Sanderson sell his soul to, to be able to write like this? Seriously, so impressive.
And Vin, such a perfect little brave cinnamon roll, who was always too good for this world. Her choosing to go, when Kelsier feels unable to leave, God, I can't. Brandon Sanderson is able to evoke such much pure emotion from me, because of these amazing and realistic characters he creates.
“She brought destruction to the destroyer”
Seeing, and actually talking about, the Cosmere universe was amazing, too! Brandon Sanderson is such a talented author, and seeing him talk about this elaborate universe that he has created, with his stories that link it all together, made me awestruck. I also loved how we are slowly learning that there are greater problems surrounding this universe, even though we as readers are always just so heavily invested with the story at hand.
This was a wonderful addition to this world, and I can't recommend enough! I am so thankful to have read it, and it really made an amazing story even more spectacular! And that epilogue with Spook made me want to run to my bookshelves and pick up The Alloy of Law immediately.
(I read this in Brandon Sanderson's Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection!)
Okay – yes, Mistborn: Secret History is amazing. But what I want to know is: will there be a Secret History #2 and maybe even a Secret History #3? Because until I read this clever novella, I had no clue exactly how many secrets Mr. Sanderson had hidden in the world of Mistborn. And now I want MORE reveals.
Secret History takes us back to the first era of Mistborn. (Which means no more Wax and Wayne; we’re instead reunited with Kelsier and Vin.) Sanderson published it, however, shortly after the third Wax and Wayne book, The Bands of Mourning, with the intention that it not be read until the reader has made it through Bands.
And I can see why. Because this novella accomplishes three things:
1. It puts a whole new spin on nearly everything in the first era.
2. It fills in some gaps, albeit vaguely, in the years between the first and second eras.
3. It sheds light on the events of the second era.
So yeah, it does a lot.
And there’s a fourth accomplishment, at least for me. Most importantly, Secret History gives me peace. The ending of the first era of Mistborn crushed me when I read it, but now … I’m alright with it. I feel a new sense of contentment when I think of how Sanderson wrapped it all up.
Secret History is a definite, must-read for every Mistborn fan. Just don’t pick it up until you’ve at least finished Kelsier and Vin’s story. You’ll take some of the fun out of reading it, if you do.
"He held his daughter close against his own broken soul"
Hero of Ages threw me into a massive slump and this happens to be the only book I've been able to read since. Go figure. Thank you, Anji, for giving me the last push! This was everything i didn't even realize I needed in my life. How do I describe this novella? There are no words. This left me awestruck & speechless. I am an emotional slob at the moment. Miraculous. Simply wondrous!
*It's not fair how emotionally invested
i am in this story and characters.*
-Kelsier's desperation for survival.
-Vin being selfless and brave for her loved once.
-Spook seeking for Kel's approval with all his being.
"Spook sank down onto the platform,
slumping to his knees, then fell forward.
Kelsier knelt and held him.
"You want to be like me, child? Really like me?
Then fight when you are beaten!"
-Marsh fighting off the demonic hold on his existence.
"You made the wrong one of us your Inquisitor, Ruin,"
Kell hissed. "You shouldn't have picked the good brother.
He always did have a nasty habit of doing what was right
instead of what was smart."
-Preservation being adorably arrogant. Makes me want to reread HoA just for this puppy right here! The bromance was too pure! TOOO FUCKING PRECIOUS!
“If there was one thing Kelsier was good at, it was lying to himself.”
I finished all the released books in the Mistborn series ending with this one and I am such a large fan of it! This is a novella taking place during the events of the first trilogy but it should be read after the first trilogy as it contains major spoilers. It has minor spoilers for book 4 so it can be read after it but the important thing is finishing the main trilogy first.
I can’t go into details regarding the plot as I am keeping this spoiler free but I love a smart author and Sanderson is one of the smartest authors ever. He could enhance an already existent trilogy with a novella without feeling like he was milking it!!
The MC here is Kelsier so if you are a fan of him, you should not miss this book as it explains a lot of thing and adds character growth to already existent ones. I loved the hints of what’s to come and about the origins of the allomancy! Mythology is something I love very much and seeing this world’s mythology made me super happy.
Summary: A short story in the Mistborn world which just improves what we already know, Plot is all spoilers so I am skipping that but it has the awesome characters, plot and magic system that we are used to!
With “Mistborn: Secret History” we are once again in a pivotal moment for the Mistborn Original Trilogy... I would not recommend to read it if you have not read the first three books already, or if you have not, but plan on reading them... It would spoil the series for you, so don't do it!
"... “Oh, hell,” Kelsier said. “There’s actually a God?”
This was a very poignant and very telling story of the spirit of the original Mistborn Trilogy. It is told from the POV of Kelsier and I would not want to say anything about it, except that it is very much Kelsier and his stubborn refusal to do what is expected of him... Loved visiting with this beloved character once again and was very intrigued and happy by the postscript to this story, promising us more:):):)
Re-read for The Lost Metal. Only two more days!! Review: 5 Sanderson-is-a-genius stars. Brandon recommends reading it after Mistborn book 6 as it contains spoilers for Bands of Mourning. (Technically also possible after Mistborn 3 , but not any sooner; involves major spoilers and you will be utterly lost if you read Secret History any sooner than that.)
!!!Spoiler below!!!
In a really deep delve into the Cosmere (for which this Cosmere girl is so here for), we get to see Kelsier help Vin (and friends) save their planet Scadriel “behind the scenes.” It was really mind-blowing to see a bigger picture, meet familiar characters (from other books/worlds) and realize how instrumental Kelsier is to the defeat of Ruin – knowledge we readers were not privy to in Mistborn Era 1.
I can't wait till November 15, 2022! Lost Metal (Mistborn #7) here we come!
“Once you step behind the curtain and see the actors as the people they are, it becomes harder to pretend the play is real.”
I really don't want to say what this story was about because it really is best to dive in blindly. Just know that this story is essential.
This novella is set after the original Mistborn trilogy but Sanderson recommends it be read after The Bands of Mourning.
“He tried to save the world.”
“As did I.”
“You tried to rescue a boatful of people from a fire by sinking the boat, then claiming, ‘At least they didn’t burn to death.’ ”
The lovely thing about this novella and it's contents, is that Sanderson didn't randomly decide to write it after the fact. He had this planned all along. And this novella fills in all the gaps he deliberately left in the original trilogy.
According to other readers (bare in mind I have only read Sanderson's misborn books so far, so I cant speak for the rest) this novella even had some ties to other Cosmere books.
Preservation felt every light that went out, felt them and knew them as a person he had loved.
If you haven't read the Wax and Wayne Mistborn books yet, do so immediately. They are definitely worth the read and it's clear that Sanderson has only more great stories in this world ahead for us.
They sat there together. Two friends at the edge of the world, at the end and start of time.
Alright, I'm gonna say it: you really shouldn't read this book unless you've read most, if not all, of the rest of the Cosmere. I know Sanderson's intentions are that no book be completely dependent on understanding the full universe, but honestly I can't imagine how swamped with new information a reader would be if they came into this only knowing the Mistborn series. At the very least, in addition to Mistborn up through The Bands of Mourning, I recommend having read Elantris, Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell, and the Stormlight Archive through Words of Radiance. If you're not inclined to dig into fan theories for explanations, you'll want to have The Emperor's Soul under your belt as well to understand some foundational concepts.
So... you can skip Warbreaker and Sixth of the Dusk, but that's basically it.
As you might expect, the rest of this is all spoilers. Sorry, folks. That's just how it goes. If you are not 100% up to date on the Cosmere, or if you consider information revealed at signings/other events to be spoilers for future books, the rest of this review is not for you. The first line under the spoiler tag will ruin things, I swear. Don't click it.
With this story Sanderson proves himself, once again, to be a complete master of the Cosmere universe. This is a story which I would strongly not recommend reading unless you want to be majorly spoiled for the main Mistborn series and also get hints at some of the things which happen within the Wax and Wayne series.
In this novella we follow a character that I never really thought I would encounter again and we see their point of view whilst the events of the first three Mistborn books are unfolding. We see the way they react and the things they learn, and we see so much new stuff that it's hard to recount it all and consider all of the implications it has right off for the Cosmere.
I don't want to spoil anything about this for any Sanderson fans, but suffice to say, for me this was excellent and I loved it. I couldn't have imagined the full scope that Sanderson would go to in this to inform you and excite you about the Cosmere Universe, and of course the fact that it was a surprise novella too was great.
Basically if you've read and loved the previous 6 Mistborn books then this is a pretty great companion and really hints at a lot more to come. 5*s and highly recommended!
Spoilers from the original Mistborn trilogy, You need to read those first before reading this.
Need I mention that this is as great as the Trilogy cause it is, The world building, plot and writing is well depicted. Not to mention the whole book is in Kelsier's POV. Yea dead Kelsier who survived death somehow, can't say its a secret.
“I killed you,” the Lord Ruler said. “Twice. Yet you live.”
“Yes. We’re all aware of how strikingly incompetent you are. I’m glad you’re beginning to see it for yourself. That’s the first step toward change.”
This book answered lots of questions from the trilogy, and yes there is an afterlife and of course Kelsier refused to move on, instead he stayed to help his friends to make sure that they defeat Ruin.
All those times that they got mysterious help and tips it was all Kelsier.
This broke my heart, It was sweet that they met in the after life and Kelsier was speechless because he thought he let her down.
She embraced him, and he found himself weeping. The daughter he’d never had, the little child of the streets. Though she was still small, she’d outgrown him. And she loved him anyway. He held his daughter close against his own broken soul.
“You did it,” he finally whispered. “What nobody else could have done. You gave yourself up.”
“Well,” she said, “I had such a good example, you see.”
This book!! For some reason, I was postponing reading this novella and then it totally slipped out of my mind since I didn't have it on my kindle. Until I remembered it yesterday and finished it in one sitting. I loved it. I would recommend reading it however either before era 2 or directly after book 6 because a lot of time has passed since I read it and honestly, I wish I read it much earlier.
Bottom line: amazing novella. I was always sad when it came to Kelsier, this it? But I'm glad it's so much more...
Se me cayó una lágrima 😢
Historia secreta de Mistborn es una historia corta de 180 páginas, del Cosmere que TIENEN que leer por muchos motivos.
Esta historia la tienen que leer SI O SI después de haber terminado la primera era de Nacidos de la bruma. Tienen que conocer el final del héroe de las eras.
Y es una novela necesaria para entender el Cosmere y les juro que les va a cambiar la forma de ver la primera era de Mistborn.
En la novela nos van a volver a contar TODOS los sucesos de la primera era pero en vez de hacerlo desde el Reino Físico (dónde transcurre la primera era) lo hace desde el Reino Cognitivo.
Todo contado desde el punto de vista de cierto personaje que llega al mundo Cognitivo al final del primer libro de nacidos de la bruma y que no voy a nombrar para no hacer spoiler. 😬
El relato es MARAVILLOSO, te emocionas con todas las escenas, lloras, aprendes muchas cosas del Cosmere y ENTENDÉS cosas que antes ni habías entendido.
Dan ganas de volver a leer todos los libros de Mistborn ahora que tengo esta nueva información en la cabeza. 😱
También entendés mucho más el final de Brazales de Duelo, libro 3 de la segunda era. Que obviamente cuándo lo terminé quedé tipo WTF 🙃
Obviamente deben haber un montón de cosas y detalles que todavía no termino de entender porque me falta leer varios libros del Cosmere. Pero todo a su tiempo..
Vin, Elend y Kelsier LOS AMO
PD. Hoid te amamos, no puedo creer que este tipo aparezca en todos los libros del Cosmere.
Yo leyendo Historia secreta: 😰😓😝😬😜
**This is a spoiler filled review, also be aware of spoilers for all of Mistborn Era 1 and some for Era 2.**
This novella has reduced me to this:
My head is in shambles. I cried through the last fifty-or-so pages. Brando Sando just brought back all my emotions from Hero of Ages and killed me all over again. Except this time, we had a bit more insight as to what was going on in the God-level. Things that stood out in relation to the Mistborn stuff:
- Elend and Vin reuniting for a final time in the Cognitive Realm. This was beautiful and it made me more depressed. They could have gone back, but love. That was beautiful, though I did feel bad for Kelsier when Vin left him
- That ending scene where Sazed and Kelsier sit together and just watch the new world --> wholesome
- The part where Spook is doubting himself and lamenting about how Kelsier forgot him and didn't care about him. The fact that Kelsier was watching him in that moment and saying that he was his friend, and that he did care was just too hearbreaking for me. I loved that moment in the original trilogy: I cried then, I cried now. I am such a mess oh my god.
- Then when Kelsier appears for Spook in the epilogue because he is broken? ahh
- Also the reason why suddenly Spook is Lord "Mistborn" makes sense :)
- Leras / Fuzz / Preservation has stolen my heart. His death too, was heartbreaking and I cried. In the OG trilogy all that is said is that Elend didn't know that he was watching a God die, and I thought it was impactful. Now, I was bawling my eyes out because in 100-ish pages I got so attached to Fuzz. I can't. Guys I am literally crying as I write this. I can't take it
- Ati's death was also quite poetic. Though I am curious as to who "Vax" is.
- I was trying to figure out who Trell could be, but I have no clue so far...
Things I loved in relation to the the outer Cosmere:
- The general expansion (things are so well explained, I feel like I know and understand much more about the Realmatic Theory. This book did a better job of what The Bands of Mourning did when it gave a crash course on Investiture)
- KHRISS!!!!!!!!!!!! I love whenever Khriss shows up. Also some guy called Nazh was with her. From where she is left off in White Sand, Nazh isn't with her. However, that is the name of the dude who got the map in Elantris... I am intrigued.
- We got more Sel. So happy about that. I KNEW the second I read their names that they had to be from Arelon or Teod, but when the head woman was described as an Elantrian boyyy did I get hyped. I want to know more about the Ire definitely.
- Overall great expansion I can't wait to see more of this happen in the future books.
- Hoid and Kelsier don't like each other... lol :)
- Also, I love Hoid :))
Some things that I didn't like as much were how some parts were very disjointed and I feel like this would have very little merit for someone who is a casual Sanderson reader. Or if they only read Mistborn. They'd get some of what is going on, but definitely not most. Overall, though, I thought this was great. Was happy to cry again at Lord Sanderson's magical story-telling.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Genre: Epic Fantasy + Novella
It is very hard to give a proper synopsis to this novella without spoiling it. So I will keep this one short. Although this is book 3.5 in the Mistborn series, it is advisable to read it after book 6 (The Bands of Mourning) due to some minor spoilers. If you plan to read the second era read this after book 6. If you have no plan in reading the second era then you can read it right after The Hero of Ages.
So what is Secret History about? It is about Kelsier’s resurrection and how he meets God! He even names him Fuzz! So you have Kelsier, Fuzz, and Preservation who play a major part in this interesting fast-paced novella. I feel this short story was intended all along to be released with the main goal to fill up the holes in the first-era Mistborn trilogy. Sanderson does it brilliantly choosing one of the most loved characters. I always wanted more of Kelsier and the author gave me here what I needed.
If you are a big fan of Mistborn, you’ve probably read this or you won’t wait for my recommendation to read it. If you are still reading the series then you need to add this novella to your TBR and make it part of your Mistborn reading schedule.
So I have to confess I didn't read this until well after I read the first trilogy because the name misled me. I figured this was going to be an overview about the magic system and world. I had already read up a lot about it on 17th shard and Coppermind so I figured no big hurry. Reading Arcanum Unbounded it was finally time and this was quite the pleasant shock.
I don't want to give too much away so I'll just say it's about Kelsier and what happened to him from the point he sacrificed himself to the Lord Ruler. The book is a lot of fun and fills in some gaps in the first trilogy and some things going into the second.
April 2022 Re-Read:
30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 2
Book 29/30
I liked this even better this time. But Sanderson is right that it's disjointed so I can't give it five stars. I teared up a little though!
I don't actually have much to say about this, now that it comes time to write the review. It's hard to talk about any of it without spoiling way too much for this entire series, including major stuff from both the first and second Mistborn series. It's definitely best read after Bands of Mourning.
Some spoilery stuff, stay away lest you know things you shouldn't. Back in ye olde 2016, Sanderson pulled his now classic trick* of dropping not only a second novel mere months after its predecessor was published, but then up on that publication, he also dropped this surprise novella that filled in some holes in the continuity,
*I do want to say a little bit about the evolution of Brandon Sanderson's positive trolling career, which he has now escalated, if you are unaware, to dropping four new secret novels he wrote during the pandemic and which will be published next year every three months, and also you could sign up for merch boxes so every other month there isn't a book you get merch. But he basically hinted to the internet that something bad was coming. And then he did the opposite of that.
[4.5 stars]
February 2016: Brandon Sanderson is ridiculous. He's all, here's a surprise novella, and no big deal, the entire thing is made up of such game-changing ridiculous nonsense, you won't even think it's real as you're reading it! You know, just been writing it since 2004 and stuff. It only gives you the most information on the Cosmere that has been released yet. It only changes a shit ton of stuff we assumed about the original trilogy and the Wax and Wayne books. NBD.
Make no mistake here. You should absolutely not read this book unless you have read all the Mistborn books. He just reveals a whole bunch of shit up in here that he's been keeping an unbelievably tight lid on for years, and it will ruin the intended flow of the story if you read it before you finish Bands of Mourning.
I don't think this book will appeal to everyone, even those who've read all the Mistborn books. First of all, it's way more piecemeal than anything else Sanderson has written, which he's aware of, per the author's notes at the end. So it's not quite a novel both in terms of length (it's not really a novella, too long, but not contemporary novel-length, either) and in terms of content. This story absolutely cannot stand on its own in any way--it's a companion piece. Characters, events, ideas, are all dependent on you knowing and remembering details from his past books (including non-Mistborn Cosmere books like Elantris and his short Cosmere novellas like "Shadows For Silence in the Forests of Hell").
With that said, how cool is this shit? I thought we would have to wait a lot longer to see Sanderson dive into the Cosmere of it all, but he's actually starting to weave all the connections more and more into his books.
No spoilers here, but, certain people will be VERY pleased with what transpires at the very end of Bands of Mourning, and continued in this novella. Like I said: game-changer.
Secret History (Mistborn #3.5), Brandon Sanderson
Mistborn: Secret History is a fantasy novella by American author Brandon Sanderson, written as a companion story to the original trilogy of the Mistborn series. The novella follows the story of Kelsier from the time of his death in Mistborn: The Final Empire and concludes with the events of the last book in the original trilogy, The Hero of Ages.
After being killed by the Lord Ruler, Kelsier meets Preservation as he is about to pass on to the spiritual realm. Kelsier refuses to do so and races to the Well of Ascension at the heart of the Lord Ruler's palace, touching its power and thus anchoring himself to the world. Whilst trapped at the Well, he discovers another entity trapped there: Ruin, the counterpart to Preservation, who intends to destroy the world.
When Vin accidentally frees Ruin when she gives up the power at the Well, Kelsier is also released. With the world now under direct threat from Ruin, a dying Preservation tasks Kelsier to find help. Following Preservation's guidance, Kelsier meets two people from different worlds, Khriss and Nazh, who point him to a covert group known as the Ire (Eyree) as his only chance for aid.
Despite Ruin's dissuasion, Kelsier travels to the Ire's fortress. He discovers that they are planning to steal Preservation's powers once he dies by using an strange artifact. Kelsier dupes the group by posing as Ruin and steals the artifact for himself. When he returns to his world, Preservation tells him that he cannot pass on his powers to Vin because she has been spiked by Ruin. When Preservation finally dies, Kelsier takes up the power using the stolen artifact. Trying and failing to contact Vin because of Ruin's interference and his inexperience with Preservation's powers, Kelsier decides to instead travels to Urteau and succeeds in freeing Spook from Ruin's influence. ...
