Season of Malice, the fourth book in the standalone suspense series starring Detective Kendall Halsrud.
Her wedding planned for New Year’s Eve has Detective Kendall Halsrud looking forward to the holiday season. Recently disciplined for involving non-professionals in a case she was working, Kendall is dismayed to find out that her friend is interested in her newest assignment when Brynn befriends the wife of a murder victim. After two seemingly unrelated deaths, Kendall must put off her wedding and risk a friendship in order to stop a killer.
If you love your suspense with a strong female protagonist and an exciting plot,
Marla Madison currently works part-time doing arbitration for the the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.
Hard at work now as an author, she is writing her sixth novel of suspense. Her first series, the TJ Peacock & Lisa Rayburn suspense series, has three editions out, the third, Girl Undone, has just been released. Marla is currently working on the third novel in her second suspense series which spotlights Detective Kendall Halsrud.
At home in Northwestern Wisconsin, Marla lives on Prairie Lake with her significant other, Terry, a beloved shelter-dog, Skygge, and Poncho, an opinionated feline from the same shelter who believes he is the boss of everything.
Some of her favorite things are playing duplicate and tournament bridge, golf, reading, pontooning, and taking long walks with her dog.
The story is completely and is not requiring any of the other books. The suspense is continuing as a young woman is both in danger and a suspect in murders. The characters are interesting and enjoyable. I recommend the book and the other books in the series.
Season of Malice was a pretty good detective procedural. It was confusing at times because of so many characters. The chapters were short so you could go back and get your bearings... My main complaint with the book was the ending left too many unanswered questions . Did the murderer go free?
This was a well paced Mystery that wasn't too gory. I think the 'card reader' characterization could have been completely left out, but since it wasn't too mystical, I could live with it. The work up suggested that The NYE Wedding was important in the story, but again, I wouldn't have put that in the back cover workup as it was a rather weak story point. I did enjoy the book and will probably read more from this author.
A who done it story where we know the victims, the accused and the criminals. The adventure is how the police finally catch them
An interesting story of how two women sharing a story about their husbands is overheard by criminal who decides solve their problems and then hunt them down for not appreciating his efforts
Book was a gpod read! I have wondered about Grants fotos, and Ivys ex. You dropped a clue, early on, but it never was brought to surface! I suppose book 2 will tell us about Grants trial! I enjoyed your book! Paula was kinda short fused, but you must have one! Good book, language was G-.
First time reading this author and must say the book is very well written and keeps you in suspense. The many different characters (even annoying Brynn who just seems to get herself into trouble time after time) are all very unique So much so that one has many people to cast in the 'bad guy/girl role."
This is a standalone thriller of Detective Halsrud as she's faced with the murder of two men. It's really challenging and complex for her and she is forced to delay her wedding plans. This is a compelling but complex detective investigative novel. There are way too many characters for me to sort out, but I did hang in there to determine if I had guessed who the killer was. It does have a surprising end!
Kendall and Brynn have an unusual friendship. In this 4th book in the series there is an element of Strangers on a Train, but all is not as it seems. Putting herself at risk, Brynn steps out from her shell to help a young widow. I like the characters in this series.
This is a really good book with a lot of characters that are deep and shallow and all interesting. The plot is something easily imagined to be real, with a lot of other things happening in the characters personal lives it all makes for compelling reading. It’s very well written.
I am from Wisconsin and liked the fact the story takes place I. Eau Claire, WI. This story grabs you from beginning to end. I like the characters in this series. I will definitely like t o read the rest of the books in this series. Marla MadIson is a great Author in my opinion.

I have just finished book 4 in the Marla Madison's Detective Kendall Halsted series and they are all spellbinding stories. They are all action filled and puzzling as far figuring out the why's and the where fire's of each book. I will be looking for the next book in this series and recommend them to anyone who enjoys a good whodunit.
Normal hard police detecting combined with card reading. I don't believe in that type mystical affairs, so I down graded my rating. But an enjoyable book.
It is an absorbed reading, fast and quizzed. However, the detectives were real weak in their skills. It seems that the detective are led by the consultant and all the detectives did were to meet in restaurant for eat.
A great story well written! I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the interaction between them. A strong main character who is very believable. I will be reading more of Maria's books.
This book had a good story base. It did not have explicit sex which I count as good. It did have quite a few bad words. Any story which features profanity and sex isn’t worth reading and distracts from the story.
I enjoyed the characters but found there were so many I had trouble keeping them straight (70 year old mind). I read it straight through. A few “psycho” parts but the ending was very good. I read it straight through. 4 AM bedtime last night. Lol
The deaths of two men, abusers, but what is the connection. The police cannot find any between the two women in their lives. Who else could have a motive. For me too many annoying characters doing seemingly the polices' work.
I docked one star because I felt it was really stupid that the police department would allow an 18 year old card reader to be involved in their cases. She was a computer whiz, but surely they could find a more mature one.
This book kept you on your toes until the end. Couldn't figure out who the killer was until almost the end. Loved the main characters and would love to read more with these two main characters.
A well-written story with a good plot line. Couldn't guess the solution for awhile, which makes it more interesting, even though the author gave us lots of clues. I liked the way the police worked with each other, no backbiting and trying to outshine each other.
