EmVee is back after barely escaping with her life and after the run in with her ex boyfriend changing her, she had no choice but to run and nobody but her father left to run with her. Since they night, they have been on the run and living with one eye watching behind them at all times, but this can't last forever and between the fights and sleeping in their car, EmVee and her father hope that this time, they will have enough to leave the country, but all those hopes are dashed and the latest fight.

It all stays off fine with her father fighting and EmVee collecting the money, but when she sees someone from their past in the crowd, she know that something isn't right and let's her dad know as soon as she can. He tells her to run, but she won't leave him behind, so instead she hides while he confronts the ones following them. Unfortunately, he doesn't survive the confrontation and so EmVee has to find her own safety, so she turns to someone she hopes will be a safe haven, even if only for one night before, she starts her mission to destroy the one who have destroyed her life and her family.

As EmVee follows the clues left behind, she runs into the best friend of her ex, Kayson who says that he can help her get the answers she do desperately seeks, however, they aren't the answers she expects. A whole new world of supernatural and paranormal beings is opened up to her and if she hadn't been through what she had, she would have said she was crazy, but if it gets her where she wants to be, then she might just have to start having faith in him.

Can EmVee trust Kayson, did he know what a monster his best friend was and does he know what happened to her to make her the monster she is today? Will they survive long enough to get the answers to both their questions, or will death find them sooner than they expect? This is a fantasy adventure which is full of tension, twists, turns and supernatural beings in this action packed story you will not want to miss.

Caged Fire (The Vigilant #1) by LM Preston

This isn't the first book I've read by the author. Caged Fire is a fantastic read. This is the second book in The Vigilant Series. Also the second book I've read.

EmVee is back and at it again. This time though things are different. She's not exactly human anymore. And Silas is dead. Now she's gotta find her family. The quote I chose for EmVee is: “That sucks. We have to find them. Who knows how long they will last like that?”

Highly recommended for YA Fantasy lovers.

You leap right in and hit the ground running with this short story. Caged Fire is fast-paced and action packed. It is a paranormal story mixed with fantasy and science fiction. It is written in the third person so it took me a while to get into flow of it. Lots of action and suspense, betrayal and mystery, love and sacrifice see our heroine on a journey to find her dad's killer.

Emvee was changed in a world full of magic and werewolves. A dark world she knew nothing about. Now she needs help but she has no idea who she can to trust.

The story leaves you with many more mysteries left to be answered.

This was the second book by LM Preston that I have read, the first being Insatiable Darkness, the lead in novella of this series. Caged Fire begins one year after the events of the first book. While this book could be read as the first of the series, Insatiable Darkness gives more background on the characters and gives more understanding to several story points in this book.

EmVee and her father are on the run, but as always EmVee doesn’t understand what they are running from. Her entire family survived the car accident at the end of Insatiable Darkness, only to be in the hospital later when it exploded, her father got her out first but was unable to get the others before the explosion. Her mother Stella, her siblings Dexter, Reece and Rei were “killed”. Now, Max, her father, has come out of retirement and is fighting again to make money for them, though no one is to know she is his daughter. EmVee is no longer the clueless human, not since Silas “scorched a trail of fear into her soul”, fear like nothing she has ever known before. Rapidly, her father is killed by a mysterious tall blonde who claims to be the secret investor of the family gym. With help from her new friends as her only allies, and with information from Rocky the bouncer of Club Fixation, (first book), she begins the adventure to find answers not only about her father’s death but everything that has happened since her family left New York. Finding Rocky’s home, she comes face to face with someone else from her past, Kayson. She blames him for the attack from Silas feeling that he knew his best friend was a murderer, only to learn that Kayson barely survived the attack from Silas that killed the rest of their band, just before her date with him. Because of Silas, EmVee and Kayson now have a deeper connection, something within them hungers for the other. After learning that there are several provinces, Fae, Vampire, Earth, etc. Kayson and EmVee must go into the vampire province to fight in hopes of getting the chance to ask the vampire king some questions. With some answers finally they have no choice but to return to the Void, Newport. EmVee shifts into a Fenrir wolf and finally understands her hunger for Kayson, he is her Alpha. Shadow Hunters, Faeries, Rumpelstiltskin, Redcap, Pied Piper, Berserker Gargoyles, Soul Thief Warlord, Soul Trainer Warlord, The Overlord, this is just a list of creatures that you come across in the ultimate hunt for answers. In the basement of the hospital, the same one with the explosion, EmVee and Kayson come across a redcap and goblin like creature that finally gives them some much needed answers and gives EmVee more hope that her family is still alive somewhere.

If you enjoy fast based books with little down, then this is the series for you. The pace never seems too fast or gets boring as you never know what is coming next. This is the perfect combination of mystery and love story. While EmVee is afraid because of Silas she can’t deny her feelings and hunger for Kayson. LM Preston has become one of my favorite authors, her ability to build not only the characters but their surroundings make you feel like you are there, like you know these characters. I can’t wait to read the next book and continue to learn the more about this world, and how it all comes together into the bigger picture.

Secrets are deadly.
Being hunted is never pleasurable.
Not knowing whom to trust as everyone seems to pursuit his or her own goals makes life complicated.
Yet EmVee is here, determined to get her answers and save her family. With Kayson at her side, the same Kayson she loved years ago, the same one who was best friend with the man she dated and who tried to kill her.
Thank God for friends like Demi.
Though, being fully exposed to the world of supernatural and magic, can they survive unchanged? Unscathed? Or can they survive at all?
This story holds a lot of potential. Likeable and relatable characters, interesting world building, complex story, everything. Yet I could not enjoy the story as much as I'd like to, simply because I was not able to create a connection to it until the end. All emotions, whether meant to be romantic, terrifying, or suspenseful from the action involved, all of it fell flat and could not reach me, making it difficult to read on, and it took me much longer to read through the book than it normally takes.
Dialogues were fine, but descriptions were dragging my attention away a lot, and sometimes I needed to reread some parts in order to avoid confusions or understand the connection.
The story itself wasn't bad, per se, it was actually quite good, yet the execution drew me to conclude it was not really a fitting read for me, despite being my favorite genre and having all elements I like in the books I read.

EmVee can't seem to catch a break. The attack by Silas was enough of a shock, but when an accident has her and her father on the run, their entire world changes. She's not only trying to quell the strange feeling inside of her from Silas' bite, but she watches her father shot by a mysterious woman. As she learns more about the dark world the normal humans know nothing about, she discovers secrets she's desperate to uncover the answers for. And as she begins her hunt with her only friend, they "bump into" Kayson, who only makes the story more dangerous and mystifying. As they learn more about each other and the uncover information that tells them her missing family members may still be alive, the threats become more real and more lives than hers are in peril. Will she find the truth? And what of the all of the unknowns tied in with Kayson? A trust is broken, and lives are on the line.

This story was hypnotizing from the very beginning, and this second book only takes us in deeper. The characters are rich and intense, and the story is captivating and difficult to put down. I'm so glad this series is continuing because I just know there's more excitement to be had. This is some brilliant world building, and I can't wait to see where the author takes us.

An action-packed mystery that chases high stakes at every turn!

This story has it all – MMA fighting, other worlds, creatures of all sorts, and a mystery that needs to be uncovered before the main character can find peace and move forward.

The reader first meets EmVee – a girl with a family past that seems to have caught up with them. With the supposed murder of her mother and siblings, EmVee embraces the world she has now with her MMA-style fighter father and this inner urge to be a fighter herself; little does she know that fact will be key to her survival. Soon, her father's 'fighter' status begins to hold deeper meaning than she originally thought. When her new world is attacked by strange beings and it appears her father has been killed, EmVee must embrace his past to unravel events she doesn’t understand yet and worlds she didn’t know existed to find justice. Preston has created an interesting world that abuts the earthly realm and intriguing mystical characters within a hierarchy of levels and jobs. If you enjoy massive action, fight scenes, and piecing a puzzle of clues together, you’ll enjoy this story.

I can never get enough of this wonderful author. Their works of the writing they create always keep me entertained and wanting more. Each book they complete, and I read, I truly devour!

This one was a great start to a thrilling new series. I loved the characters and what they had brought to the table. They had their own sense of drama, being funny, and going after what the journey would bring. The book had a lot of action and great description of visual effects. The author really crafted a magical book, and I could not put this one down. I loved the pace of the story as well. I could not let this go. The talk of magic and how it played its part was wonderful and full of intrigue as well. I could not get enough of this wonderful book. It was a epic journey and adventure, that I long to take again!

Again, love this author for all that they create! This book was such a fun and thrilling read. I can’t wait for the next installment! Highly recommend this must-read book, and awesome start to a new series

Caged Fire by L.M. Preston
5 Stars

Caged Fire follows EmVee, a girl who has a mysterious past on her continuing journey to find her family’s secrets with the help of some new friends. One day, someone from her past reenters her life. From there, she struggles between finding her family, figuring out the family secrets, and figuring out if she could trust this person from her past.
Full of relatable characters, Caged Fire keeps the reader guessing and intrigued. Caged Fire is unique and there was not a single moment I did not like. Emotions such as confusion, love, mistrust, betrayal, and others are clearly portrayed and makes the reader feel right along with the characters.
Caged Fire is a must read. It is a quick, fun read that will keep you guessing. I highly suggest reading the prequel Insatiable Darkness first, as it sets the stage for Caged Fire, but you would not be entirely lost if you decided not to. In all, Caged Fire is a must read!

Caged Fire (The Vigilant Book 1) by LM Preston

Caged Fire is the first book in The Vigilant Series and is a YA/Fantasy that once you start reading there’s no putting it down until you’ve finished. This pucks up right where the prequel left us. There’s twists and turns that had me turning the pages trying to figure out what was going to happen next. This is a fast paced story packed with action, suspense, drama and romance. EmVee is a badass plain and simple. She was changed by dark magic and is going through changes she doesn’t quite understand. She’s trying to figure everything out and at one point has to visit the past. This is a wonderfully written story that has a lot going on at once. But man what an adventure. I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I can’t wait for the second book. I’m very intrigued to see how this all plays out.

EmVee is going through some changes and she's not sure she completely understands it all. Then she seems Kayson, someone from her past, who doesn't quite belong in this present day picture but she's going to have to learn to deal with him. So much has changed since her dad made a decision to move the family to "Rhode Island" and there are more and more questions with each passing day. Friendships become strained, new ones are formed, and an alliance that is bonding takes place too!

I loved this book and thoroughly enjoyed the adventure! There is a lot of action in this read and I look forward to more of this story. There are several story lines that I'm hoping will be covered in this series. I will say, this book took some twists that I wasn't quite expecting but they all turned out well!

Caged Fire is a story that is filled with werewolves, action and romance. Emvee thought that she had lost her family but it turns out that they were captured by the Overlord. The Overlord is the villian in this story who wants to take over the Earth Realm and the Void where humans and people with magical abilties get trapped. There is a lot of lore in this story that is unique such as the women being soul trainers who are strong, fierce warriors. Whereas, the men are soul thiefs who are forced to do the Overlord's bidding. Unlike most romance stories, there is alot of action in this book but the fight scenes were very cool and descriptive. Emvee and Kayson's relationship develops throughout the story. So when the time comes for them to finally be together, the reader can give a deep sigh of relief. Caged Fire is a great book for someone who loves action movies and the paranormal.

This is book 1 in the Vigilant series, and we are back with Emvee. After the shocking twists and losses from the previous book Emvee and her father are on the run. They are trying to escape the past however they can't stay hidden for ever. Someone is after them and they won't quit.
When Emvee sees her father shot by a mysterious woman she vows to get revenge so she sets out on journey to find her father. With the help of her friend Demi and Demi's boyfriend Sax they embark on a journey to find the truth and hopefully save her father.
But things aren't that easy with people from her past returning Emvee doesn't know who to trust and when she starts getting weird feelings from the bite off Silas things take an even stranger turn.
This story is full of secrets and lies that need to be unravelled if Emvee is ever going to understand the life she now leads

The story just keeps getting better and better. We continue to follow EmVee after the disappearance of her mother and family they are presumed dead. Left with only her father, they move often and follow the MMA underground fighting scene.
After her father is shot and carried off by a mysterious woman EmVee and her friend Demi, Sax (Demi’s boyfriend) and Kayson work as a team to find out and enact revenge on this woman or those she works for. And she needs to find out if her father is alive, as well as determine what has happened to her family when she is told that they are alive/
The past continues to throw things at EmVee, the issues from Silas, and people from her past. Who and what can she trust?
Another really enjoyable read. I cannot wait for more.

I really enjoyed this book. EmVee had been attacked by her boyfriend, who it turns out was a monster. Now she is one too. She finds that the boyfriend's best friend (Kayson) had known what he was and didn't warn her. She finds that Kayson too was made into a monster in the same way as she was. He helps her get back to a place that they had both came from, with the intention of finding her family whom she had believed were dead. Now it seems that maybe they weren't, but they were back in that magical place called the Void. She didn't know if she could trust Kayson or not, but she had no choice.

Caged Fire is Book One in the Vigilant series by L.M Preston. It comes after the novella length prequel that set us up for the series.
This story continues what we started in the prequel and is another intriguing YA fantasy with even more going on for EmVee and co. She is in the thick of things here, facing challenges and situations she never even contemplated only a short while ago. Events have left her shaken. Now she has little choice but to confront the past, monsters, and so much more- life is about to test her like never before.
I wonder where we go from here. So, I’m off to explore Book Two…
Happy Reading!

Thank you, L.M. Preston.

A few years have passed since someone tried to kill her. EmVee and her dad have been on the run ever since, trying to run from their problems but now it is catching up.

When her father disappears, she finds out about his debt and favor being collected.

A glance of Kayden can’t be good either. With nowhere to run and unsure who to trust, EmVee goes to find out who is after her and her father.

I noticed that the author has more books in this series. There were so many twists and turns as well as emotional parts of the story that surprised me but I enjoyed the novel.

I’m not sure where the story is going next but I can’t wait to find out,

Wow! What a ride! This story is so much fun. I wasn’t sure where life was going to take EmVee after the first book. I had a feeling her and Kayson would find each other again, I can understand why she is so hesitant to get to close to him after their past and Silas, but by the end of this book I was happy with how far they have come together. I can’t stand Megan, she is cunning and evil the way she treats people to get what she wants. I can’t wait to see where the next book leads, and to read more about EmVee and Kayson, see if anything happens to Megan and find out what happened to EmVee’s family.

This was definitely a fast paced, action packed adventure that had so many twists and turns, I couldn’t put the book down! EmVee was such a great heroine, who keeps working so hard despite all of the trauma and setbacks. She is struggling to understand the changes in herself ever since her attack and she has lost everyone she loves. She now has to work with her ex’s best friend to try and uncover the secrets she needs to get the answers to, while working through her feelings for him as well. This was a roller coaster of emotions and an amazing start to the series! I can’t wait to read the rest of the books!

EmVee is back in installment two of this Vigilant series.
After the attack by Silas EmVee and her dad have been on the run, but darkness is brewing inside her and something doesn't feel right after being bitten.
Then her dad is shot right in front of her and dragged away leaving her with no one to trust or turn to.
Insert Kayson who she didn't trust when she met him previously but he has info about her family and how to help her. Can she trust him to uncover all the secrets she's still plagued with.
This book was much better than the first with strongly developed characters action snark mystery and a little romance. Can't wait to read the next one

Overall rating: 4.3 (ku)

The storytelling used vocabulary very appropriate for the young adult reader. These characters played their roles well and I appreciated the main characters reluctance to bond. This author did not make these characters out to be perfect beings, which allows them to be more relatable. These are many mysteries left to unravel which makes the yearning for more of this series even better. Glad to have read this and have release date of book 2 on my calendar. All my reviews are always voluntarily written.

Looking for a place to call home! EmVee is missing the only home she has ever known. On the move constantly cause her family is either dead or missing! She's not only looking for someplace to call home but on the move to find out who is to blame for what she has become. Her ex attacked her and changed her into something primal! Is she going to come out on top or will she perish? Will she fall for Kayson? Will she find her family alive? L. M. Preston has brought the new world to life! I love her books that I have read so far and can't wait to see what she brings next!

Wow, what a ride!!

The characters were amazing. I loved reading and getting to know Emvee and Kayson!! They were an amazing team!! I felt a connection between the two characters, though they didn't hit it off at first, which made the story that much more exciting!!

The story-line was phenomenal. It's action pact, fast paced and extremely addicting. I enjoyed the story completely from beginning to end. It's a wild ride that has me waiting on the edge of my seat for more and I highly recommend it!!

I love supernatural and paranormal type books and this really fit the bill. I love how the author brings the characters to life. The story has enough drama in it and has just the right touch of romance to balance out. The story has an original plot and story line.

I love how there is a beginning of monsters aren't real and then wham all you thought was make believe is real. This really just made the book for me. I like how the chemistry evolves between the main characters and blossoms. I really look forward to reading more from this series and author.

After reading the prequel I was really looking forward to starting this book, and picked it up immediately. This book was just as good as that one, just more detailed and with even more excitement. The story is a bit of a slow build, the author developing it bit by bit, but I found that just drew me in more. I wanted to get further into the story and I really wanted to read more about EmVee.
As the second book in the series this has made me more excited about what is to come. The author is creating a strong and interesting series and I can’t wait to see where that takes us.

EmVee and her father are on the run since her mom and siblings are gone, and they're all the other has left. When she sees Kayson at a fight of her fathers, she knows it's not a good sign. EmVee has been experiencing some new things and she knows it is from being bitten by Silas, but what does it all mean?

When EmVee witnesses her father being shot and carried off, she turns to Kayson, the only person she feels may be able to help her. Is he telling the truth about her mother and siblings possibly being alive, or is she going to be on her own forever?

EmVee is such a strong person. I mean that is both mind and body. This is an interesting spin on the supernatural genre. A lot happens in this first book. The biggest question is who can you trust. This book is fast-paced and action packed. If you like anything to do with the supernatural genre, strong females and action then this book is for you.

Hooked me in from the first page!

I was hooked from the first page. I love the different mix of fantasy, science fiction and a little romance. EmVee uses her natural abilities as a trained fighter to save her friends and family from the evil overlord. Her skills as a fighter and a wolf that breathes fire save her again and and again. I loved the book. It was hard to put it down. Lots of action that kept the story moving I’m looking forward to reading the next in the series!!
