In 1356, Sir Guy de Bocqueville follows whispers of a strange new heresy to an abandoned castle in southern France. He encounters the Good Men - a small charity sent from our time to better the brutal Middle Ages. Horrified by the technological wonders he perceives as witchcraft, he flees for his life to warn the world. In his chaotic wake, a new leader takes command of the Good Men. If the feudals won't accept the future willingly, he'll force them to... with the power of the bullet. The armies of Christendom mobilize and desperately wage war against an enemy seven centuries more advanced than they. Knights and soldiers, lords and kings, popes and peasants; all are sucked into the storm as Europe is set ablaze.
This was an interesting story (although if I have to read the words "tore through them like tissue paper" any time soon, I may scream) people from now (I think) are in France trying to cure plague. It's never made clear WHY though, and that's really frustrating. If you had the power to time travel, why on earth would you mess with past events and not just observe? The potential ramifications are mind-boggling. Also, if you WERE going to send people back, surely you'd have a series of extreme psych evaluations and through background checks so lunatics like Richard and George couldn't mess things up? Whilst I kinda liked the story, the total lack of explanation was incredibly frustrating.
This is really a cool story. Totally improbable even if it wasn't impossible, it completely upsets every presupposition about what would happen if modern people could time travel to the past. Hardly anyone is a hero, save two. Only one of the modern folks has any redeeming value, while royalty and commoner alike is bad. I admit that I love time travel stories, but even those who don't should agree that this is rollicking good fun.
A bit more background on the “Goodmen” would have enriched the novel...at least for me. Overall, I was quite pleased with the reading and the fact,in this age of serialization, it was a novel with both a beginning and an ending. I look forward to future works from the author.
Although I initially thought I wouldn't like this book, I ended up quite enjoying it! I shall keep my eye open in case there is a follow on. Give it a whirl.
