Absolutely beautiful!

This book reminds me a lot of those Studio Ghibli movies I adore. You know the detailed art that makes you appreciate your daily life a little more? Yeah, that. I picked it up on a whim but I don't regret my decision since it made my afternoon better!

It was so short, I'm kind of guilty that It'll be counted in my reading challenge but then last year the shortest book I read had probably three whole pages. Do read it if you want. The worse thing that can happen is you wasting your precious two minutes.

Is it all quiet in the morning? Absolutely not. This illustrated one just with its captions describes the morning. Yes! The moments of morning! The chirping of birds, whispers in leaves, sun peeps through the window quietly. All the sounds we hear everyday can't seek our ordinary minds' attention. People are very busy with all the works. Having a peaceful mind to catch & enjoy the sound of morning is a great thing ever!

I don't know why this book is making me emotional reminding me John Denver's-
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, growing like a breeze.
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong🎵
Sometimes, it is good to be reminded something precious🧡

"Today is a melody
still to be written,
today is a tune
no one's heard before."

There couldn't have been a better way to become mindful of the mornings! Simple words, with simple drawings, yet so profound in its essence.

Richie’s Picks: WHAT SOUND IS MORNING? by Grant Snider, Chronicle, May 2020, 48p., ISBN: 978-1-4521-7993-3

“Dawn is a feeling
A beautiful ceiling
The smell of grass
Just makes you pass
Into a dream”
-- The Moody Blues (1967)

“What sound is morning?
Lights click on,
a cat softly creeps
a baby babbles
wind whispers in leaves.”

Are you a morning person? I am! Sometimes the dawn is a step ahead of me, but oftentimes I’m the one with the head start on the day.

Saturated in early morning shades of gold, rose, indigo, mauve, and mint, WHAT SOUND IS MORNING? is a poetic celebration of the early morning sounds you might hear if you focus your attention and listen.

Clanking garbage trucks; sprinklers hissing on summer lawns; frogs croaking in a stream; a man hollering toward the pulling-away bus he just missed. There is playfulness in the collection of sounds that author/illustrator Grant Snider has woven into this lyrical picture book.

WHAT SOUND IS MORNING? concludes with a call to:

“...greet the new day
with a stretch and a yawn
throw open the window
and fill the world
with your song.”

A lovely read-aloud for morning circle.

Although I enjoy the nighttime as life's pace slows down or speeds up, depending on what's going on around me, I've always been a morning person, eager to get going on my daily tasks, even if those only involve feeding the cats and reading my books. There's just something about watching the day unfold and listening, as the author entreats us, to the sounds of morning unfolding. It's not as quiet as someone might think. The mention of lawn sprinklers coming on, traffic building on the freeway, garbage trucks making their rounds, and someone making breakfast capture the start of a new day effectively. The final pages encourage readers to embrace the new day with all its possibilities just like those birds perching on those electric power lines along the streets. Readers may enjoy reading this book and thinking about their own morning routines, and maybe even turn around those grumpy attitudes to positive ones as they consider the new day's possibilities. I enjoyed the vivid hues used in the illustrations, created with ink and then digitally colored, since they include vivid purples, oranges, reds, and yellows effectively, and then conclude with a page filled with greens, blues, and pinks. This picture book would be a nice companion for the author's previous What Color Is Night?

Today is a melody still to be written,
today is a tune no one’s heard before.
So greet the new day with a stretch and a yawn
throw open the window
and fill the world with your song.

Ada suara burung, ada suara alarm, ada suara saklar lampu dinyalakan, ada suara angin di antara dedaunan.

The color scheme is so pretty!! The enveloping warmth of the morning can be felt on the color scheme and the overall atmosphere of the book. I felt losing big time that I read this on a black and white paperwhite!! Such a shame!! Anyway, Grant Snider is so wholesome, the reason I love him so much!!

This book is strikingly unique, from the earthy-abstract, subject matter, to the trippy-tranquil palette of the illustrations. A real stand-out.
