Rate this book
Life has never been easy for Denver Hollis. But at twenty-three years old, she didn't foresee losing everything, becoming homeless, sleeping in shelters, and sometimes on the cold city streets of New York.
One day, her luck turns. With help from an unlikely friend, Denver lands a promising job as an assistant for Callan Hawk Attorney at Law.
Callan Hawk is an attractive man. He exudes power and sex appeal. He's also arrogant and, at times, insufferable to work with.
Ignoring the way Callan's presence and heated stares make her feel, Denver is determined to stay focused and get her life back on the right track.
Little does Denver know, Callan has his sights set on her. After discovering Denver's secret, he becomes more determined to protect her—make her his. Callan vows to take care of her and give her everything she never had.
Promises are made to be broken. Right?
Now Denver has to choose to walk away from the man she has fallen in love with or trust him with her heart again.

Amateur, cliché tropes.

-One doormat heroine. She goes along with everything hero said and did.
He gets her naked and his bed and she’s like “you can’t do that. You don’t even like me, blah, blah, blah.” He’s like “no other man will see your pussy other than me, this is where you belong” and she’s like ok.
-Rich asshole hero with a penthouse. Where haven’t I heard that before?
-Virgin tstl, doormat, poor, down on luck girl. Who became a kept woman after hero felt sorry for her.
-OW(s) yes because one wasn’t enough. One from her coworker and the other one from one of his FB of 4 years (on and off) this woman humiliated the heroine and he just stood there without saying anything to this woman.
-Everyone and their mama took advantage of the heroine. With the occasional one or two friends who helped her along the way.
-OW kissing not once but ✌🏼the poor unaware hero who didn’t know this woman was going to kiss him.
-The “ you’re mine and you’re where you belong” only lasted until his employee/OW accused the heroine of stealing. He let her get arrested while she was crying and begging him not to let them arrest her. He was so much hurt that she was “caught” stealing. We’re not going to deny the fact that she indeed stole some food and some clothes but after she started working she did not do it again.
-Did he grovel? Not nearly enough. This asshole let his ex FB of 4 years in his head. She conspired against the heroine with her friend to get her arrested while he did shit. She spent the night in jail, scared out of her mind while he was drunk because he was too hurt thinking that the heroine scammed him. Ans he sends the clothes he bought and his driver and what does the stupid do? She takes the clothes and get in his car like nothing happened. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Everything was bad about this, the writing, the plot, the characters, the relationship.
Callan took advantage of her, literally helped her from a horrible situation while she was vulnerable to minutes later try to seduce her and basically get in a relationship with her.

Some parts of this book were good, others were mediocre.
I liked the the first half of the book. At 48%, it got blah and then picked up again at 70%. I did not care for the ending.

Denver is homeless when she gets a job as Callan's assistant. The hero is a rich, divorce attorney. He does not know Denver is homeless when she starts working as his assistant. Callan appears grumpy when he first meets the heroine. Denver overhears a conversation where Callan wants her fired, but that does not happen. The reader has to assume why he wants her fired for the drama, but it pretty obvious it is because he feels a strong attraction to her. Things move pretty quickly once the truth comes out about the heroine’s living situation, but that all backfires. This I think was done well in the story. I think it showed a true side to a real relationship. No trust.

Callan’s groveling was weak. It was not enough for allowing Denver to get arrested for a crime that a co-worker and an ex-lover accused her of committing. Flowers, lunches, and a chauffeur does not win someone’s trust back. Denver should have told Callan to shove it.

There is co-worker jealous drama “you did not deserve that job” and little OW drama AND I mean little.

I think some parts could have been executed (written) better. The dual POVs were done well. I did not feel it was a waste of my reading time, but it is not something I see myself reading again.

I liked the secondary characters.

Waste of my time. These characters are all complete stereotypes made up of other better characters and the writing is poor as well.

This is a deliciously angsty read about a woman named Denver who–because of terrible circumstances–has become homeless and she’s struggling to find a job. She finally manages to get a position working as the assistant to a high-powered lawyer, but she has to somehow keep the job and make it to her first paycheque while staying at a shelter and dealing with minimal food. I love books where the protagonist has come under very hard times and must persevere, especially when the hero makes snap judgments about her and doesn’t have a clue about what she’s really going through. (I love this miscommunication/lying trope so much!) This happens in this book, and I absolutely loved it.
It’s interesting, because there’s a warning in the beginning of the book that this is an insta-love story - but it isn’t quite that. At least, the hero instantly falls for the heroine (and the reader can tell), but she has no idea until about halfway through the book.
For the first half, this was a five-star read for me. But after they get together, things were perfect–until they weren’t. I get that many romance books have to have a miscommunication/misunderstanding or something to tear the couple apart towards the end of the book, but I would have liked for Callan to have had more trust in Denver. I personally felt betrayed by him and I wasn’t even in love with him.
All that said, this is a great read, especially if you love these tropes!

Denver Hollis caught a break when she was hired as assistant to Callan Hawk, being homeless was hard enough but wondering when she would be able to get back on her feet again was daunting. Denver is willing to put in the hard work and even with Callan snapping at her all the time, she is going to prove she deserves the job.

Callan doesn't know what to think of Denver, on one hand she scares the crap out of him with the feelings that are arising within and the other he is grumpy when he is in her presence. When he realizes that Denver has been keeping secrets he realizes now is the time to let Denver know he intends to keep her but someone in the office is not happy that Denver is there and will do everything in their power to ruin it.

This was a surprise, really enjoyed this one. Callan is a jerk pretty much midway through but you get why when you get into his back story. I liked Denver a lot, she is a quiet fighter and yet when she gets her hackles up when Callan is particularly cranky. Terrific.

this book just infuriated me. first of all the amount of times the love interest called the girl baby made me angry it was just weird and is a big reason why this book was just absolute garbage. i know this is an insta love romance but in the span of 5 pgs the guy goes from hating her to being all “you belong in my home with me” and “i didn’t do girlfriends until you”. there was barely a plot and the awful conflict at the end was just thrown in to add something to the story (the conflict was also just not good and it was so obvious what happened). AND THEN the love interest screws up and tries to make it up to her and she tells her she needs time to trust him again. THAT TIME CONSISTS OF ONE SINGLE PAGE BEFORE THEY ARE BACK TOGETHER, ENGAGED, AND PREGNANT?! JUST SO UNREALISTIC IT HURT MY BRAIN. yeah do not recommend this. don’t read it. skip this‼️😚

"I spend the next thirty minutes analyzing what just happened between the two of us, and concluded Mr. Hawk is like any other man—momentarily boob drunk."

I know that my review will not be able to convey how much I completely and utterly loved this book. My god. It was just soooo good.

It's in dual POV but there are honestly only two chapters that are told from Callan's POV and that's not normally my style. It was just done so well!

The writing was really good and the details regarding Denver's homelessness was phenomenal. I felt all the things she was feeling. The side characters were great, I loved them all. You know, except Kelly and Joselyn lol.

Callan was so protective, I just loved him. And he REALLY messed up. I can't believe that he didn't trust her about something so little. The man gave her a black credit card and thinks that she's going to... well no spoilers I guess.

The thing I really liked was that she absolutely made him grovel. She didn't give into him right away and forgive him, which she shouldn't have. He totally broke the fragile trust she gave him. The grovel got me here, the writing and story kept me.

If anyone knows what Spencer's book is titled let me know because I couldn't find it with my cursory search.

This is going to be one of my all time favorites. There's no helping it.

Read 2: I don’t know what is up with me going back to comfort reads lately. It’s like I can’t pick up anything new. I need to read a story I know I’ll love. Well this one certainly fits the bill and still remains one of my all time favorites.

What was that...

Okay okay let me start off by saying the book was good....story line, editing, correct spelling all that good stuff. Now why the 2 star rating you ask??? What in the world was that!!?? They were doing great & then BAM! Trust ruined what an ugly betrayal for such a beautiful soul who’s been beaten enough! & then I’m expecting an amazing grovel && what nada! Well there was some but in my opinion not enough especially for what happened. I seriously wanted her to move on I did not like Callen after that. I expected a slap or something but all we got was “okay” let me send a driver (after said betrayal) “okay” let me send flowers & lunch “okay” let me buy dinner for the place you used to stay (stars in her eyes) “okay”....no no no woman grow a back bone & tell him to shove it! Anyways if you’re looking for a good book where the h starts off strong & then becomes a doormat this is the book for you! Happy reading!

A TikTok quote made me read this.

It’s fast paced and lacks any suspense. It gives you all the information at once, rather than building up and discovering the story.

There are parts of this that are raw and made me emotional, but they passed so quickly it didn’t allow time to wallow in it. I want to wallow and have parts of a book destroy me.

There was nothing special about this book. Characters were kind of annoying and there wasn’t really a plot. The writing style felt very immature, didn’t feel like a book tbh. Idk, wasn’t really for me.

This was ok- I'm not going to lie, I was really disappointed with how everything played out, mainly because I love this trope, and had relatively high hopes for how the story would turn out.

The writing style just didn't work for me- I just felt like the book was really rushed and convenient in a way that didn't suit the story for me- and let's not talk about the lack of groveling for what the hero did 😐.

Overall, the book wasn't bad- I still relatively enjoyed it at times. I just however, was not a fan of how everything progressed, and didn't find myself getting that attached to the characters.

Crystal Daniels and Sandy Alvarez Blast into 2020 with this well written highly engaging new book. I have not had a book that I was unable to stop reading in quite a while. This is that book. By 13-14% in I was hooked. Denver was naive at times but believable and always appealing. Her compassion for others kept you rooting for her to find a way to better her circumstance. Better her circumstances she did. She had a hard time counting on others for assistance but she dug deep and found that trust. Callan appears at first glance to be the typical self indulgent, jerk but this is far from his true nature. He was shaped by his early life but the way he uses these early life experiences shows a strength of character that will leave you enthralled. The supporting characters are all worth the time they take in this story. Richard and Frances are the kind of people that make you believe "family" is who we choose to love not always DNA. The "mean girls" are exactly that MEAN and get whats coming to them in the end. Well... at least one of them does. I sure hope Spencer gets his story told. He was screaming for his own story throughout this book. This sister writing team just keeps turning out winners and I can't wait to see where we head next. I was fortunate enough to receive this ARC and happily post this honest review.

My rating: 3 1/2 stars

What I liked: I liked how Denver(h) was strong person that didn’t forget the people who helped her along the way. I just wished she made Callan(H) suffer more.

What I didn’t like: I hated how we didn’t see Joslyn get what she deserved. I need that confrontation with her and Kelly. Also, if Frances knew that Denver was innocent why didn’t she bail her out of jail instead of making her stay over night.

How hot was it: 3 out 5

Triggers: h is homeless and later in the story she is accused of stealing and the H didn’t believe in her.

Final thoughts: This was a good story. I would have given it an extra star if we gotten to read the confrontation with the two evil women (I needed to see them suffer). Yeah we are told that Kelly was arrested but it would have been great to see more of her suffering.

This book has some very unlikely, unrealistic parts..
Most of all.. some bitch in new york calls 911 because her wallet is stolen. In 5 min (!!!!) In new york city.. cops arrive to the office and search a random persons bag (because the b told she stole her wallet) ). Like wth? It does NOT happen. Not to mention her being led away in handcuffs.... because a wallet. And they interiogate her for a hour and she sleeps in jail..
Hero believes she is a thief and leaves her to rot in jail.

Overall this book was WAY to cheesy, cringe and unrealistic for me..

Hmmm, a short, easy read but still effective where it counts. The writing was decent, if somewhat lacking some artifice. Which is not a bad thing, but this story did have the huge potential to be a real angst fest had the authors chosen to do so and really go there. As it is, they chose to go straight into things, making all the drama unfold very quickly and solved as fast.

For instance, the very sudden J/P manners of the H, Callan, was outrageously funny and I am glad that Denver called him out several times on the hyper speed he was going into a relationship with her. It came out as super cheesy and even cringey, but candid me could try to just think of him as super laser focused on his woman. However, he did surprise me on how quick he was to believe the worst of Denver. No J/P H worth his salt would have fallen for such shoddy tricks from so obvious villains. But well, I guess the story needed that drama moment and in effect, though it was all cheap thrills, it worked! I even shed a few tears during the angst moments. The grovel was quick, a bit too much for my tastes, but it did mirror the trend of the whole book, and overall, I found the 'taking the time to do it right' to be a sane and sweet path to go.

Mini rant, but each time Callan called her 'Baby' it grated on my nerves. It sounded somehow cheap and easy, esp. when his demonic ex used to call him that all the time 🙄.

I liked Denver's character, it was well painted most of the times and I appreciated the social message in there. I also liked how Spencer helped put facts clearly to Callan. Looks like he may be set to have his own book? If yes, I am tempted, but I do hope that after all the sane things he said to Callan, he will not blunder as easily and stupidly as his friend.

Overall, I liked this short novel a lot. I do wish that it had a proper epilogue though. The authors clearly have the potential to wring much more drama into their plots, and I do hope they do go into the real deep in one of their books.

I'm a strong believer that books find you, and they get to you at the right time. You know that book you needed in your life but you didn't realize it until you read it? Well, Keeping Denver is one of those. And I couldn't have asked for a better story to start the new decade.

This office romance is pure perfection: from its compelling setting and story development to the human side of its main characters. Because if there is one thing I've learned from reading Crystal Daniels and Sandy Alvarez's writing is that they always touch on important and vital subjects. Their stores are connected to real issues, making their stories believable and relatable.

Denver Hollis hasn't had an easy start in life. At 23, she is homeless and in search of a job that will allow her to improve her situation. She is not looking for a winning ticket or an all-in-one solution to her problems. She doesn't blame anyone for her what has happened to her and she is not mad with the world. She takes one day at a time, carrying herself with dignity. What I liked the most about her is that she sees things with such clarity. She really gives a different perspective on being homeless, and it is refreshing and eye-opening. I've never read a character like her.

Then we meet Callan Hawk, who is the super alpha, gorgeous and ruthless big NYC lawyer. But there is more to this man than what has been written in the papers and what meets the eye. He becomes protective of Denver almost right away. And despite his bossiness, he does have her best interest at heart. He tries to fight their attraction, but the pull is there and their chemistry is hot and steamy.

In the end, these two characters work because they feel real and stay true to their beliefs. And their road might not be perfect, but whose is it? So, if you want an office romance that will warm your heart and stay with you, read Keeping Denver. It is truly a perfect story.

Spoilers ahead

Ok, this review is a case of, it's me not you. H is only seen with gorgeous people, at the h's first day on the job, his on again off again f#ck buddy comes in for lunch and is rude to the h, we find out later he ditches her right then and there. But since he has such stellar taste in women she becomes a problem. As does his secretary who from minute one hates the h because the h takes the position she wants and her hopes to land the H. (the H never wanted anything to do with her) This had way more ow drama then I thought it would. And since I only had one small amount of his point of view up until the big drama, I didn't connect with him, loved the h, and wish she didn't forgive him (I know I wouldn't and if I did not as quickly).
I guess I had a different hope for this story going into it. Please read it for yourself, it just hit too many buttons for me. I may have liked it more simply if we saw more pov of the H. He literally had like 3, or maybe just 2 but you get the idea. I will continue reading from this author and hope she continues the series.

Take the sweetest, swooniest book you’ve ever read and throw it right out the window because it has been replaced by Keeping Denver. Sexy, sweet Alphas don’t get any better than Callan Hawk. I’m not exaggerating here people, Keeping Denver is hands down one of the sweetest, sexiest romances I have ever read. I became so attached to these characters within minutes simply because of how lovable they are.
Denver is one of my all time favorite heroines from Sandy Alvarez and Crystal Daniels. She’s one of the most gentle and kindhearted characters ever while also being one of the strongest and most resilient. Life has dealt her so many blows and she just keeps pushing forward determined to carry on. Callan on the other hand may seem cold and closed off, but let me tell you, once that man puts down those walls the fierceness of his love will astound you. When he loves, he loves BIG.
My heart both ached and soared while reading their story.
