A Classic English Village Whodunit that combines characters from two of USA Today Bestselling Author Leighann Dobbs’ most beloved series in a humorous whodunit that will keep you guessing until the end.
A dead body in the koi pond of the Twigsledge Flower Show is nothing unusual for amateur sleuth Ida Johnston who is vacationing in the English village where the show is being held. She’s sure she can solve the crime before afternoon tea, especially since she already has her first suspect - the strange cat-attracting woman who is vacationing in the cottage next to her.
Elspeth Whipple is no slouch when it comes to solving murders, either. It hasn’t escaped her notice that the strange scone-stealing woman in the cottage next to her doesn’t seem to be disturbed by the body. Could that be because the woman put it there?
When their amateur sleuthing puts them on the radar of the local police, the two women are forced to team up in order to clear their names. Finding the killer is no easy task, however, especially when the entire village had reason to want the victim dead.
This stand-alone mystery combines characters from the Mystic Notch Cozy Mystery Series and the Lexy Baker Cozy Mystery Series and is perfect for fans of Miss Marple, Midsomer Murders and Murder She Wrote.
USA Today bestselling author, Leighann Dobbs, discovered her passion for writing after a twenty year career as a software engineer. She lives in New Hampshire with her husband Bruce, their trusty Chihuahua mix Mojo and beautiful rescue cat, Kitty.
Her book "Dead Wrong" won the "Best Mystery Romance" award at the 2014 Indie Romance Convention.
Her book "Ghostly Paws" was the 2015 Chanticleer Mystery & Mayhem First Place category winner in the Animal Mystery category.
This book is a crossover with amateur sleuths Ida Johnston from the Lexy Baker Cozy Mystery Series and Elspeth Whipple from the Mystic Notch Cozy Mystery Series Books 1-3. Both elderly ladies (who don't know each other) are visiting an English village to see the Twigsledge Flower Show, when a body is found in the koi pond. When neither woman seems shocked or surprised it peaks the interest the local law enforcement. They can't possibly suspect either of the elderly women, can they?
I thought it was funny how Ida and Elspeth each thought the other might be guilty because each thought the other a little odd--Ida does have that habit of stuffing her big purse with leftover pastries wrapped in napkins, and Elspeth has an affinity for communicating with cats. After a rough start the two women do manage to work well together and it made for a few laugh aloud moments. It seems Ida doesn't have much tact or a working filter. There were quite a few suspects and it was fun when the police let Ida and Elspeth weed out the suspects for them. I mean, they might as well, the ladies weren't going to stop investigating anyway.
This was a fun crossover which can be read in a couple of hours. Although I prefer Ida with her detective ladies it was fun to see her on her own solving a murder, and I missed Elspeth and her Mystic Notch cats. If I wasn't already a fan of the series these two are in, I'd definitely check them out after reading this fun book.
Meet Ida and Elspeth. Two elderly ladies from two of Leighann Dobbs series. Ida is from the Lexy Baker Series of humorous culinary cozy mysteries, and Elspeth is from the Mystic Notch series that has mystery-solving cats.
I don't normally like the crossover stories as they have a feeling of being forced, and one that wouldn't occur naturally. This one is different, both ladies have traveled to England for a popular flower show.
Both Ida and Elspeth are near the Koi pond when a little girl decides to get a better view of the fish and moves some of the lily pads to see better. Elspeth notices that a large amount of water had been spilled. More than just the girl looking at the fish. She pushes the lily pads to the side for a better look and discovers a body floating in the pond.
Both ladies have experience solving crimes and murders back home in New Hampshire, where they both live in separate towns. They team up together to help solve the crime giving the local investigators a headache trying to keep the ladies safe while solving the crime (using the ladies to get the witnesses to open up without knowing they are being watched.
A clean story with well developed characters, and a few surprises along the way.
Teatime Pastries and Punishments by Leighann Dobbs is the first (and hopefully of many more to come) crossover from two of her already popular mystery series featuring Elspeth from her Mystic Notch Series and Ida from her Lexy Baker Culinary Mystery Series.
I have to say that there are so many great ideas with this book. I will spare the reader the synopsis and overview, as one can read that from the summary above.
I love both of the wily, energetic, resourceful, and lovable characters of Ida and Elspeth. They are so similar (despite their small quirks and both initially thinking otherwise) that their interplay between each other works perfectly. There were several moments that I literally chuckled out loud. There is enough of a chemistry here that could easily create more crossovers, either by returning for more adventures, or by meeting up in their respective communities in NH.
I also love the detective duo of Louise and Max. They also play well off of each other and they truly do need their own series. There are plenty of scenarios in which the detectives could investigate mysteries and murders in the quaint English countryside that would delight readers.
Lastly, I enjoyed the murder mystery. It was a good premise and was a realistic scenario. Ms. Dobbs created a multifaceted storyline that easily created several potential culprits with means and motive that kept me guessing until literally the end. I also enjoyed how everything wrapped up. I always like positive endings.
This is a well-done cozy mystery that definitely needs to be continued in more ways then one.
Fabulous read and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. I wholeheartedly recommend.
5/5 stars.
Thank you Ms. Dobbs and Co for this ARC and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.
I loved this crossover mystery taking place in an English village. Ida Johnston from the Lexy Baker series and Elspeth Whipple from the Mystic Notch series are in England for the Twigsledge Flower Show. When the ladies visit the flower show they find the body of Sir John Hastings, owner of the property where the annual flower show is held. Their amateur sleuth behavior kicks in and they begin to investigate separately. Unbeknownst to them, Detective Chief Inspector Louise James and Sgt. Maxwell Evans trick the ladies into finding clues for their investigation. During the investigation the ladies discover that Sir John was preparing to sell the grounds which also included Crowley Hall, the mansion. His new young wife, Celia, wants to travel. There are several suspects and unique characters including his daughter, Angie; Adelaide Timmons, flower show organizer; the Village Protection Committee and Kenneth Fairlane, Sir John's competition for the orchid prize. This is a fun new series. A must read! I received an advance copy. This is my honest review.
Ida and Elspeth are two seasoned "detectives" in town for a flower show and they have a case first thing in the morning. The ladies are sweet and endearing and quite charming to read about. The theme for the book is the flower show and it is very well represented, there are blooms on every page! My complaints are the author chose to convey not only Ida and Elspeth's pov but also that of the police. The police point of view took away from the village folksy feel that Ida and Elspeth carried so well. There was no profanity but a couple of things bothered me in content. The author makes a reference to Betty White and to a man liking other men. Both of these very secular comments had nothing to do with the charm that Ida and Elspeth conveyed and were completely unnecessary to any part of the story.
As an entry to a LeighAnn Dobbs created world this crossover novel was fun and I enjoyed the setting. I love that the sleuths are not the usual young, sexy, driven characters one finds in a mystery novel but older, scone powered suspicious gossip listening individuals who are always on the lookout for the unusual and furtive. And while truthfully, I prefer both of these ladies backed up by their regular cronies and in their hometowns, this foray into the unknown was a definite hoot. So much fun, and very entertaining.
I loved everything about this book! This is a crossover series featuring Elspeth from the Mystic Notch series and Ida from the Lexy Baker series. Elspeth and Ida become involved in a murder mystery while they are both in England at a flower show. I literally laughed out loud at some of their antics. The interaction between the two of them and the two detectives Max and Louise. This is a clever mystery with great characters. The perfect read for fans of Midsomer Murders! I hope to read more in this series.
Loved how Ms. Dobbs brought two of her American protagonists from different series together to team up for a murder investigation in England. These two women have very different personalities and investigative techniques. They complimented each other and it was fun to watch them interact. It was a surprise ending for me, which was great. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a fun, interesting read.
Wonderful book! Loved that two characters from other series found each other while in vacation and joined up to try to catch a murderer! Loved that two little old ladies were able to do so much and especially loved all of their quirky behaviors! I voluntarily received and read an ARC for an honest review.
This is a wonderful new Cozy Mystery series. I enjoyed the book and liked the idea of two characters from two other books. Elspath and Ida helped the police a great deal. They both were visiting England and attending a flower show where a murder was committed. The flower show is amazing as the ladies investigate. Great read!!
I really enjoyed this sleuth duo. I would love to have a cup of tea and talk about what would be going on at the flower show. The author really weaved a fun story with sprinkles of humor and you really didn’t know who the suspect was until the very end. Looking forward to more of her series!
Lovely enticing story.I can also see DI Vera Stanhope in this book as well as 2Miss Marples. Love the characters as well as the description of the flower show. I want more please.
Getting these two sleuths together was grand. I enjoyed the descriptions of the flower show. Often the detectives are so dismissive of the qualities of the skills of the amateur detectives that reading this detective’s outlook was refreshing and clever.
Elspeth Whipple and Ida Johnston are both from New Hampshire, but not the same town. Now they are both in England to enjoy the Twigsledge Flower Show and they happen to be in adjacent cottages. On the morning of the show opening, Elspeth overhears a couple of people angrily talking about some changes to the town. There were rumors that Crowley Hall, the enormous estate used for the flower show, might be sold to make way for a Hotel and a Golf Course. Needless to say, that does not go over well with the local population.
One area used for the Flower Show also had a koi pond. A little girl moved some of the pond lilies to see some of the fish. When the lilies started shifting again, Elspeth saw something that should not have been there - a dead body!! The body turned out to be Sir John, the owner of Crowley Hall where the show was being held. As Elspeth and Ida start asking questions of the people at the show, it catches the attention of the local police.
Who killed Sir John? Why was he killed? Was the killer connected to the Flower Show? Or maybe the Village Protection Committee? Can Elspeth and Ida work together to solve the crime and clear their names?
Leighann Dobbs has a wonderful story with this combined mystery adventure! She has very realistic characters and situations along with plenty of twists, turns, and lies to untangle in order to expose the culprit. I would love to read more stories like this and hopefully there will be more to follow!!
Teatime Pastries and Punishments is book one in Teatime Classic Whodunit Cozy Mystery by Leighann Dobbs. Ida Johnston was on vacation in England when she visited the Twigsledge Flower Show. On the first day, Ida Johnston believed that her neighbour was the killer of the man found in the Koi Pond. Ida Johnston's neighbour, Elspeth Whipple, also believes she knows the killer. However, they never suspected that the police would think that they were the killers. To clear their name, they decided to join forces to find the killer. Teatie Pastries and Punishment readers will continue to follow Ida Johnston and Elspeth Whipple's investigation to discover what happens.
Teatime Pastries and Punishments is the first book I read by Leighann Dobbs, and I enjoyed it. I engaged with the story and the characters, and I sometimes had to laugh at their interactions. I love Leighann Dobbs's portrayal of her characters and their interactions with each other. Teatime Pastries and Punishments is well-written and researched. I also liked Leighann Dobbs's description of the settings, which complemented the book's plot.
Teatime Pastries and Punishments readers will learn about living in a small English village and the importance of village community for everyone involved.
Tale of 2 elderly American women who travel (separately) to England, rent neighboring cottages, and visit the annual flower show that is held on a nearby estate. Elspeth Whipple believes she gets clues from cats and cats seem to gravitate to her. Ida Johnstone lives in a retirement home and she and 3 other residents fancy themselves as the ladies detective club. They each overhear someone (unseen) saying she would "fix it" so the sale of the estate, which would end future flower shows, would not happen. Elspeth sees a body in the koi pond - the owner of the estate. This launches the two women into an investigation, and a friendship develops, and readers can't help but admire these two delightful women. The DCI and sargent of the police department are both amused and annoyed by the women trying to solve the crime, but they decide to surreptitiously allow them to 'interrogate' the villagers hoping they can get them to talk since the villagers are reluctant to speak with police. Many suspects and theories are explored revealing some secrets held by some of the villagers. Will the 2 American women prove invaluable to the police, or are they simply doddering old women with nothing else to do than stick their noses into a police investigation?
When two little old ladies from New Hampshire (strangers) meet in a tiny English village for a flower show, it seems that providence had a hand in it--or a cozy mystery writer. And yes, it was murder.
Eventually, the two women work together to question suspects and witnesses, and to enjoy the displays, punctuated with visits to the tea tent for scones and cucumber sandwiches.
The police detective is giving them free rein so she can listen in, and hopefully keep them safe, but we know that it only takes a moment for them to slip away without a sound!
You can solve this one before the characters do; my tip is "follow that cat!"
This was a fun crossover between two of the author's book series, but just one character from each. The pace is sedate, and the tone is light; best of all, it's clean without any sweating! Thank you!
I found this whodunit to be most intriguing; it seems that two seniors were pegged one for the other and in the end, joined forces to solve the case and now have a budding friendship for years to come and although the police don’t want to see either back in the English village anytime soon; they may return for yet another flower show. –They clinked rims, and Elspeth added, and to new crimes to solve. This story had that touch of Miss Marples and Murder She Wrote nosiness to it; subtle and yet annoyingly so sleuthing! ---------- Here's to a job well done: Elspeth and Ida beamed again. Louise scowled at them. “Instead of congratulating you on a job well done, I should be arresting you two for impersonating police officers!” “Jeez, can’t a girl get a break here?” Ida put on the charm. “We did help a little didn’t we?” Louise snorted. “I won’t throw you in jail, mostly because I’m afraid you might miss your flight out of here. Just promise me you won’t do it again.”
Leighann Dobbs is one of my all time favorite authors. I am a sucker for a crossover and I was truly excited to see that she had a crossover of two of my favorite series.
Ida Johnston from the Lexy Baker Cozy Mystery Series and Elspeth Whipple from the Mystic Notch Cozy Mystery Series are both older women who have never met but are visiting the same small village in England to see the Twigsledge Flower show. A dead body shows up in the pond and both Elspeth and Ida suspect each other.
At first they didn't like each other, but they came around as good amateur sleuths tend to do.
It was really fun to see these characters out of their normal element.
The characters are well developed and interesting. The description of the setting was breathtaking. The mystery was well written with a few red herrings that kept me guessing until the very end!
Elspeth Whipple and Ida Johnston have both decided to travel to a quaint English village to attend the annual Twigsledge Flower Show. While both are from New Hampshire, USA, they don’t know each other. Elspeth discovers a dead body in the koi pond right after the show opens. Ida also happens to be nearby and Elspeth notes her closely eying the scene. After the Detectives arrive, they notice both ladies questioning potential witnesses and decide to use them to ferret out information that the locals are reluctant to share with the city Detectives. They introduce the two ladies then follow them discretely, as they talk to the villagers. A fun cozy murder mystery to read! Nosy ladies are certainly good a eliciting info! Highly recommended.
This was a quick and fun cozy mystery featuring amateur sleuths from two of Leighann Dobbs' other mystery series. I enjoyed the clever premise of bringing together the characters of Ida Johnson and Elspeth Whipple, two Americans independently visiting an English village to see the Twigsledge Flower Show, when a body is found in the koi pond. These elderly women meet each other and decide to team up to solve the murder, with some encouragement from the local police.
Lots of descriptions of beautiful flowers, delicious pastries, and several cats who appear to actually help the women find clues.
A delightful getaway book that transports one to an English village for a flower show and a murder. Two ladies from New Hampshire are visiting the show and are dubbed the Miss Marples as they fancy themselves helping the police to interview suspects and gather information. Not much said of the Granite State and their mythical towns, but the flowers are pretty!
This was an easy to read low key mystery, however I would have preferred it as a one hour TV mystery rather than a book. For some reason the conversations and descriptions reminded me more of reading a play than a novel. The main characters did not seem well developed, but that may be because they had been introduced by the author in earlier books.
This is a light, fun and quick mystery, set in a British village and featuring two American senior ladies set on solving the crime. I feel that I may have enjoyed the book more had I been familiar with the two characters who have appeared in separate series by the same author. Still, the book stands well on its own, keeping you guessing right up to when the mystery is solved.
This my first time reviewing this author and I chuckled through the entire book. I LOVE COZIES AND TEATIME WAS SO FUNNY! Isa and Elspeth are both in England for a flower show and both are from the states and live in the state, have murder clubs. They both get rooked to solve the murder of Sir John by a super slick DCI, and I laughed at the two seniors fighting with the killer!
The collaboration between these two senior sleuths resulted in a delightful story. I just love that Ms. Dobbs brought these two ladies together to solve the mystery at the flower show. I hope that Ida and Elspeth can collaborate again.
A fun short read which inspired me to get out my tea cup and have a spot of tea while reading this charming book with two old ladies playing detective in a small English village. Lovely descriptions of scenery.
This book is entertaining, the author brought two characters from two different series together to write this book. Its great reading and I can't wait for more from this author. I received this book as a Free copy to read and I voluntarily leave this review.
I enjoyed the story but... I felt the English Detective Chief Inspector was based on the BBC character Vera. I just found that annoying. Fortunately that character wasn't really a major one.
Teatime Pastries and Punishments is a cute story of two senior American ladies visiting England. At an annual flower show, they discover a dead body in the koi pond and proceed to investigate the murder mystery. Ida and Elspeth are funny!
