The Book Junkie Reads . . .

Is it fare to put a teen through so much? Or is it just a product of his life and the way he was raised to rise above all and become that more needed? Neil Vapros was born for so much more than he himself could have every imagined. He was needed to be more and better than even prophecy told. He was the future for his nation. There was even more for young Neil to uncover in his rise to be more. Things he may or may not be able to move beyond. This YA had the characters (both primary and secondary), the action, the mystery, and a little suspense. The final installment had a conclusion you are not ready for. Or then again you may just be, so get to it and get it opened up ready to read or listen. This was worth it all.

Jon Eric Preston did the job so well. Familiar voices of the various characters you come to love and not so much throughout this YA Fantasy. This was a fitting conclusion. But that does not stop my questions and want for more.

Four kingdoms were once at peace. Each kingdom was gifted with super powers. Then wars broke out for hundreds of years but no one really remembers why they are fighting. Three incredible teens begin their journey to find answers not realizing that the power of the people make a big difference in the world.
I was so impressed with this trilogy especially since it had been written by a teen. A magnificent masterpiece!!

Thank you Hidden Gems and the talented author for a fabulous  complimentary copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

Special thanks to the author who gave me an ARC in exchange for an honest review. The author did not pay me for a review and all the thoughts here are my own honest opinion.

What I Liked:

This was a fun continuation to the series. It probably wasn't my favorite book in the series. But the ending was satisfying and how it tied everything up. This book really focuses on the revolution which was okay.

I liked how Lilly learned that revenge doesn't really fix what was previous done. That revenge doesn't really make you feel any better.

I liked Cartwright. I kinda wished his character was introduced sooner in the series because his character was so great.

Throne was a good addition to have on the bad guys team. He was actually very interesting as a character and his strategy was like super good.

Bianca made the story really fun though I wished we would've had more scenes with her and that people would've told her what was going on with Neil. Like really. *Eye roll*

The writing was spot on, I really enjoyed the descriptions and could visualize the scenes. The plot was fun and inspiring. And the powers! They were so interesting and I loved how the author took the time to write in the history of the powers.

What I Didn't Like:

Soooo.... I'm sorry guys, I just got really annoyed with the constant "Neil is the chosen one" plot line. It could have been written better. Actually, I think it might have been better if maybe it was Neil, Lilly, and Darius who were part of the prophecy or something. It was interesting on how the author chose to use this "chosen one" theme at the end of the book. I wasn't quite expecting it but I guess it made sense.

Basically the idea of everyone wanting Neil to die was very tiring.

But because of this "chosen one" theme going on and the revolution and all of this stuff, the story mainly focused on Neil and I was a little upset. I wanted to see more of Lilly and Darius. They had much too small roles in the story.

And I kind of felt that Rhys was ruined a little. The whole thing with the Doctor and trying to get Rhys's mind back together wasn't the best subplot I ever read. He was my favorite character and then this happens...

Plus, I wasn't sure how to feel about the phrase: "god is the voice of the people"..... The God I know hears the people, He loves the people, He died for the people, but I wouldn't say that God is the voice of the people, God has His own voice. I understand that the religion in this book may not represent Christianity, but I just wasn't sure how I felt about that phrase.

The Wolf irritated me because of his antics about Neil and all that.

Also the small thing about the Wolf's wife made me a little upset.

Then the fact that the Emperor's wife was supposed to be important for some reason? At least Throne thought she was though she never got much of a role in the story.

Content in Book:

1. Violence. (Assassins. Stabbing people with swords, with blood and gore. Stabbing people with knives. Arrows. Fire. Burning people. Torture. Beheading. Hand-to-hand combat. People getting killed. Bombs/grenades. Etc. The violence can be a little bloodied and gory but never overly so, only semi-descriptive. Perfect for a YA novel.)

2. Weird mental stuff of people living in someone's else's head and another incident of someone controlling people.

3. Drinking alcohol. Getting drunk. Alcoholics.

4. Minor swear words.

5. A religion to this person known as "The Man with the Golden Light".

6. Torture. (Keeping a pain record book. Keeping someone awake for days. Not giving someone enough food and water. Keeping someone in water for days that their skin starts peeling off. Keeping someone chained in a certain position for days. Etc.)

7. Drinking people's blood.

8. There is this drug that a few of the characters are reliant on in order to live.

9. Servants/slavery.

10. Dungeons. And the cruelty that is done to the prisoners there.

11. Magic.

Who I Would Recommend This Book Too:

Those who have first read The Sparks and The Flames.

Those who like assassin stories. Those who like dystopian's. Those who like reading about people with superpowers. Those who like books with great world building and good writing.

It’s been over 3 years since I last read book 2 and I really wish I had sat down and listened to the entire trilogy back to back. I know I loved book 1 and book 2, but here we are in book 3 and I have forgotten who some of these minor characters are and what they are up to. Yet I still dived into this tale and got hooked right away. What horrible things has Saewulf done? I forget. Why is the evil Doctor in Rhys’s head? Who knows. Who is Bianca again? Why is Lily so driven? Where did this prophecy come from? Yeah, I know, I really need to reread those first two books. And yet it was still a lot of fun.

Saewulf, not to be confused with The Wolf, is committed to squashing this rebellion but he’s willing to kill any person with special abilities to maintain control over the city of Altryon. Obviously, this dude needs to be stopped. Luckily we have the flaming Neil Vapros to act as the symbol of this rebellion. His powers of using flame have grown. He can fly! Meanwhile Neil’s little brother Rhys struggles with holding the evil Doctor in check. Yep, I forgot how he ended up in Rhys’s head, but that doesn’t really matter, does it? Rhys’s struggle is real and he’s probably the best good guy we got, still somewhat sweetly innocent.

I was totally fascinated with Cartwright and his dead clown following. Cartwright has an unusual power which keeps people from dying as long as they are in his physical circle of influence. He has spent decades hunting his foe, Leaf. Now Leaf is scary because I don’t know what he really wants, what his ultimate goal is. I wonder if he knows or if he’s a bit of puck and just following his whims of the moment.

As I reconnected with these characters, the tension built. This rebellion will rise and tear down this oppressive rulership! Assassins, fire, walking undead, crumbling walls! It’s all very exciting. Those last two hours of the book had me chewing my nails. I was truly concerned that the author wouldn’t be able to pull off an ending. But he did and it was very satisfying. (Tho can I secretly hope for some spinoff story about Cartwright and more about Leaf?) But if we never get more about these characters, I can happily live with the ending. 4.5/5 stars.

The Narration: John Eric Preston did a really good job. His ladies sounded like ladies and he had distinct voices for all the characters. I especially love his more gravelly voice, like for Saewulf or his diabolically evil voice for the Doctor. He also took the time and care to make it sound like two characters were speaking at once when the book called for it. The pacing was good and there were no tech issues with this recording. 5/5 stars.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Kyle Prue. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

A Good Way To Wrap Up The Series
So far, it was a great read down to this concluding part of the feud trilogy. One thing I cherish most while reading this trilogy is the cover design of each book. They carry deeper meanings and send strong messages about the plot and setting of the book. The designs are interesting and captivating.
Just when you think you’ve seen it all, Kyle Prue yet provides us with a stunning adventure once more to enjoy. In this concluding part of the series, Neil Vapros continues his adventure towards fulfilling his destiny.
Neil uncovers a bitter truth while attempting to flee from his captors. As Neil gallantly fights to stay free, he leaves behind a trail of tragic deaths, which haunts his conscience. At last, he fully understands everything that was foretold about his purpose, to live free, he must embrace his destiny.
The Ashes is action-packed and full of thrilling adventure and gripping adventure that will keep you glued. Reading through the 323 pages of this book was very exciting and interesting. They were no dull moments at all.
Recommending this book to my friend was not difficult. The Ashes truly deserves a 5-star rating.

The Ashes is the EPIC conclusion of Kyle Prue's Feud Trilogy.

Three things to know:
1) The writing is amazing.
2) The story is extremely engaging and keeps you interested.
3) Everything comes together so PERFECTLY.

I am so ever impressed with out this trilogy turned out. I've been following the series since the beginning and each time I've read the books, I couldn't wait to find out what would happen next. This book leaves you satisfied. I want to give a much better description but being the third book in the trilogy, I think you just have to read it to find out for yourself.

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this book via YA Bound Book Tours. This is my honest and voluntary review. And yes, I did start reading this book back in March. I've read it three times since.

Third in the Series, The Ashes follows young warrior Neil Vapros as he fulfills his duty to fight for what’s right. Currently imprisoned by the evil empire, Neil plots and plans his way to a daring escape. When he successfully pulls it off against all odds, some of his actions during the breakout will cause him to question his heritage and come back later to haunt him. His newly awakened powers prove hard to control, and Neil learns to wield them while on the run, a deadly combination. Where the first two books started slow, this one takes off pretty quickly and takes you on a fast-paced journey across the land with a warrior who seems to be doomed from the start. Will he be noble and selfless enough to make the ultimate sacrifice?
Great character development and growth along with amazing worldbuilding make this a series (and conclusion) that you will not want to miss!

I thought this was a great book and a very satisfying end to this trilogy. I enjoyed the many battles between the Empire and the Rebels as each side continually tried to outsmart the other side. I liked following along with each of the different characters, especially the ones on the Rebels’ side as I was definitely hoping for them to be victorious in the end. This book has a lot of twists and turns with sometimes events going in the Empire’s favor while at other times, events are going in the Rebels’ favor. Until the end, I never felt like I knew for sure how the story and the final battle between the two sides were going to turn out. I enjoyed these characters and theirs stories so much that I wished this was not the final book in the trilogy. I look forward to other books this author may write as this was one of my favorite books to read this year.

This was an explosive, emotional roller-coaster of a ride to an epic conclusion. The Man in the Golden Light told Neil to always choose to do the right, and I certainly believe that he did so. I most certainly wasn't expecting the twist in the end, but that just made the whole story more delightful. The emotion in this book was palpable, as I was reading, and my heart broke at both the further betrayals, but also at the heroism and sacrifice that so many of these characters chose for the sake of their cause.

I appreciated the epilogue here. The book certainly ended with a sort of triumphant melancholy, but the epilogue really tied the whole trilogy together and injected hope and peace into the results of so much chaos.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

I knew w̲h̲a̲t̲ had to happen in book 3 to tie up (loose ends in) the story, and yet unexpected twists caught me by surprise. The h̲o̲w̲ of all those things happened is what makes this an amazing action packed book 3...

The author continued to astound with the character ARCs of many of the protagonists, and the world he had built by now was quite detailed.

I enjoyed the series, and my favourite book is The Flames (Book2).

This book was a great cap on the series. I do wish some of the events would’ve been expanded on. I think he could’ve done a whole extra book on some things. However, I understand it’s a trilogy and we got places to be and people to see. Over all good series. Will read his next book.
