Nate Monson was gorgeous, obnoxiously wealthy, and a player.
He was also the person who could destroy my world with a single decision.

I walked into that bar looking for him.
He saw me. I saw him.
The chemistry sizzled between us, but no.

I hated Nate Monson.
I hated him with everything in me, even though my body did not.
It didn’t matter.

Nothing I wanted mattered.
He thought I wanted to get laid.
What I wanted was for him to disappear.

But first, I had to tell him that he had a daughter.

** Nate is an enemies-to-lovers 97k standalone.

The gangs all here!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💚💙💜🖤❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📘📗📕📙📘
World building: 🌏🌏🌍🌏🌎
Character development: ☺️🤓🥸😎🙃

The setting: Seattle

The Hero(s): Nate Monson - Best friend to Mason, Logan and Sam from Fallen Crest series. Nate grew up wealthy and is fiercely loyal to his friends but has been a bit of a player. He had an on again – off again friends with benefits relationship with Valerie (half-sister to Quincey).

The heroine(s): Quincey Royas - Principle ballerina at the Seattle Ballet. Her father owns the Royas Casino which is said to be mob connected. After Valerie died, Quincey got custody of 12 month old Nova.

The Love Story: Six months after getting custody of her niece Nova, Quincey meets Nate to tell him about his daughter. She (and her father Duke), want Nate to give up his parental rights. However, Nate takes both the fact that they waited six months and their request to sign away his rights as an act of war.

Nate immediately calls in his friends Mason and Logan Kade to help him. Mason is a famous football star and Logan is a Lawyer and is very good at his job. They also have some resources from their father who is an influential businessman (both legal and illegal) and is connected.

The story was really good. I loved that the Nate’s entire group of friends was included and I guess I can just never get enough of the crossovers in Tijan’s books. I liked Quincey, who was both strong and weak in different ways. She has grown up with an emotionally abusive father and has never really seen the complete and total effect it has had on her life until she is finally away from him.

Nate is a great guy and so very hot! I liked that he was all alpha and explicit in how much he wanted Quincey. The one thing I didn’t like was despite all the explicit build up, when Nate and Quincey finally become intimate, they aren’t even shown kissing, the scene just begins and Bam it is the next morning.

There was so much in this book about family and Nate’s family is really his group of friends. The following were all included quite a bit in this book: Nate’s actual sister Aspen and her boyfriend Blaise, Logan Kade and girlfriend Taylor, Mason Kade and Samantha, Matteo and Grace, Channing and Heather, as well as Nate’s friend and Quincey’s half brother Graham along with his girl Britney. I just love how this gang is together and such great friends.

DEAD SISTER FUCK BUDDY BASICALLY EX TROPE

The blurb is very misleading. The baby is not the h's but her dead sister, valerie's baby. I wanted to scream, why do authors love sister double dipping so much???? DISGUSTING. Valerie and Nate weren't in a committed relationship but they were fucking for years after meeting at university. Also I went back to fallen crest university to see if valerie made an appearance there and she did.
quotes from fcu:
"Yeah. The rest of the night is a long blur, but I remember having really hot sex." She groaned to herself. "Really hot sex. Oh boy." (valerie about nate)
"As soon as the door closed behind her, I let go of Nate's arm. "You like her, don't you?" He lowered his voice sneaking a look at her on the other side of the door. "The sex was really good last night."

"This girl could have been a one night stand. Or a two night stand. He didn't have to make it anything else." Sam said it best. The author could have had nate and valerie bumping into each other again after years and then have another one night stand, instead of having a friends with benefits relationship for YEARS. Also, why did it have to be valerie as the dead bm, why not a completely new character?? AND WHY did the h have to be the sister to the bm? The book is filled with her insecurities: if valerie was alive, would nate choose her and all of that stupid shit.

Here are some quotes from Nate:

"Valerie was from here. She traveled almost as much as I did now, but she and I weren't a steady item. We were more steady bedmates. No exclusivity. No relationship. That'd never been her and me, even since the first time we hooked up in college. It was after a big game for Mason, so the festivities had been extreme. I went to a bar and picked up a redhead who had me smiling the first second I saw her. She had me laughing within the next thirty seconds of talking, and then I then took her home. I meant to reach out later, maybe see what could be there, but I didn't. I didn't know why I didn't. I just didn't. Then she reached out six months later.
We met up and had a hot night.
No phone calls were exchanged. No texts.
Until the next time she was in Boston, and we had a repeat. After that, It became our thing. If we were in the area of the other one, we shared a night and then went on with our normal lives the next day."

That all ended two years ago, I had no idea why. I called that night two years and was sent straight to voicemail. I texted her. No response. A few months into ghosting me, she changed her phone number. I tried looking her up at her job but nothing. She wasn't on their website. Then I got an event notice online for her engagement party. She and another were smiling all night for the photographer so that explained what happened. Still, though. I'd be lying if I said I didn't think about her. Something still nagged in the back of my mind about her.

Quincey (h) said that valerie did love nate even though she married someone else, she never pushed for more. I skimmed my way through this book. This trope is probably the worst one in the world and I just wish authors understood that.

"That's the weekend you met Valerie. She went to support him. I was suppose to go but decided at the last minute to stay home and train. I had a solo in our production the following week."

^THIS IS RIDICULOUS. Fuck off, he probably still would have chosen valerie.

"I think Valerie loved you." His eyes sharpened. I turned away, looking almost distracted out the front window. "I think she loved you, but I think she knew you didn't love her. And I think she wanted to take anything you'd give her, so that's why she never pushed for more from you. I think she knew she'd lose you."

"And I think if she hadn't been with Nico when she found she was pregnant, I think she would've told you." I looked at him now. "I can't help but wonder that if she had, would she be the one sitting here?"

^ IF SHE WAS ALIVE, THEY 100% WOULD HAVE GOTTEN TOGETHER. Also best believe I would haunt my sister if she was shacking up with the guy I loved. I don't care if they were made for each other, i would haunt her ass and torture her till she d!es.

"I was rarely jealous when it came to women. Then again, I'd never cared enough about a singular woman either. Except for Valerie, but she'd been different in a lot of ways."

I know he didn't love valerie but it's the fact they had history and fucked for years AND THEN had a whole ass baby together therefore linking them for life. BYE

"You think I messed up? Not going for Valerie?"
^Nate to logan 56% into the book but he did say he never loved her. Not the point, the whole plot was about valerie and that's why it was so frustrating and made me skim the entire book.

Sister double dipping. I wish romance authors would figure out it's not romantic to sleep with a guy who slept with your sister for years and had a baby with her. It's disgusting and makes her sloppy seconds. A heroine in a romance book should be on a pedestal for the hero, that's the whole damn point of reading a romance book, its fiction. It really annoys me that the heros are always on pedestals in romance books for the heroine (and for readers who let them get away with things the heroine never could, I digress), but that is never reciprocated for the heroine.

Also a misleading blurb which is also wrong. A lot of ppl do not want to read sister double dipping, and to make it like it's her daughter is dishonest.

Let it be known throughout that I am a die hard fan of Tijan’s books.
As a fan of her Fallen Crest High series, I have been waiting for what feels like FOREVER for Nate’s book. I am not being dramatic when I say that I had to take a few deep breathes before starting Nate because OMG the book was FINALLY infront of me!
No one can say that I can love only one Hero because I love Tijan’s heroes...and Nate was one ‘secondary character’ I wanted to know more about.

I can’t believe I’m writing this BUT Nate felt a little flat. *hides under the covers*
*mumbling* I may have even skimmed a few pages…

I just didn’t get swept off my feet with this one unfortunately. But I will tell you this, Nate as a dad? WOWZA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Will I stop reading Tijan’s books? HELL NO!!!!!!!

review after finishing the book
ah, after I have literally jumped from joy when I saw this book was out, after finishing the same book, I had mixed feelings about it...

I liked it and I didn't...

the complexity of my own sentiments is strictly connected to the details in the story and the characters...now, while I wasn't very much interested in Nate through out Fallen Crest series, he actually intrigued me in his own book...he was all sorts of alphas, so to speak LOL and that was absolutely fantastic to watch, which one would show up in which situation...

what I disliked at first was the weirdly awkward premise of the story, the whole wrapped up starting plot - I won't go into it, cause well, it's a preference I guess, some might NOT think of it as strange and some, like me, might think it a bit odd and weirdly uncomfortable for being the basis of their relationship...but to each its own, I always say!

thirdly - the heroine, Quincey Royas - hmmm, not quite sure how to perceive her exactly, she has facets and layers just as Nate has his alphas shapes and phases BUT there was something off about her, it 's not something I can pin point as just one thing, it's weird, again LOL

She was not quite the woman I would imagine for Nate but then again she fitted perfectly into all his layers...

I love(d) Tijan writing, it was fab as usual, although I have to say it was also a bit less complex - she usually writes in this poetical sentences where you just get the atmosphere and a feeling out of it but NOT a direct notion in the line or a fact, BUT here, it's quite the opposite, the sentences are direct and clear, showcasing the exact situation and scene BUT the magic of this atmosphere thingy was lost on me...

Therefore, I liked it and I liked it less at certain times in the story BUT all in all, it was a good read.

misleading blurb: the baby is 18moth old, from the heroine's sister who died and left her the guardianship, and the hero and dead sister were in a no strings attached relationship..for years..
one day she just stops responding to his booty calls, he doesn't know why now the sister finds him and tells him she got pregnant and married another guy but six months ago she died in a car accident but the guy she married she divorced...now sister wants him to sign off on his parental rights as he is the dad and is named as father on birth certificate...- THAT is the BLURB!

and I hate dead or alive siblings "sharing" partners ..
I would never pick it up if I knew this was the case

Nate Monson was gorgeous, obnoxiously wealthy, and a player.
He was also the person who could destroy my world with a single decision.

To say I've been anticipating this book would be a HUGE UNDERSTATEMENT. I NEEDED IT. BAD. So I literally SCREAMED when I found out I won an early copy of this! I’m still screaming.

Ever since I met Nate Monson in the Fallen Crest series, I needed more of him! His story is everything I hoped it would be, and more. For the record, this book can definitely be read as complete standalone!

I couldn't get enough of Nate. His heart. His cockiness. His fierce love for his family. His alphahole ways. The first scene between him and the heroine....Dammmmmn!!! I could FEEL the attraction. It was INTENSE! Let me tell you, I fell for her. She was amazing and damn, my heart ached for her. I loved the banter, the tension and the growth of their relationship. HELLO ANGST. And my God, did Nate have my heart melting with EVERY. SINGLE. SCENE with his daughter. I wanted to reach through my kindle and tackle hug him. Ahhh the feeeels!!!

There were also some amazing, amazing scenes with his best friends Mason and Logan Kade. The bromance was epic. I freaking loved those scenes. If you’ve read the Fallen Crest books, you will know who I’m talking about. And if you haven’t yet, you’ll want to read them once you read the scenes between these guys! They had me laughing my ass off. The ball-busting was on point! And there were many heart-felt moments too. I DIEDDDD. I love these guys so damn much!

Oh yeah, and let's just say there were DEFINITELY SEVERAL times I wanted to kick some of the characters asses! I nearly threw my kindle a few times! Wouldn't be a Tijan book without those moments.

Nate is definitely a top read of 2021. I am addicted to Tijan’s stories and couldn't be happier with this story!

I’m surprised of how much I enjoyed this book because I opened it whilst trying to get to the next page of my books in my kindle 😂

I think Tijan has matured with her writing style and you can see it changing over time, I’ve always liked how she writes and develops her stories, and this time was no exception.

Overall I liked it, I’m not a fan of this h, poor thing, but I did like the plot and this version of Nate.

A while back I walked away from Tijan. Her style and I just weren't meshing and there were some things that became evident on her FB page that, for me, ruined her as an author in my eyes. I haven't touched a book of hers since the completely f'd up mess that was Logan Kade.

Moving forward...the only reason I read this was to get a sense of completion. Nate's book has been a long time coming. So, call it nostalgia if you want.

For what its worth this book didn't have the OW drama I have come to expect, the in your face manwhorishness, or the overly melodramatic heroine that I've come to expect from Tijan. In fact, as a couple - Nate and Quincy - were pretty much left alone (don't worry though, there was plenty of drama so Tijan hasn't changed all her ways....). All the drama was about other family and the situation they both found themselves in. Going forward there's going to be spoilers (you know NONE of Tijan's die hards are going to give them to you....) but I'll be nice and hide them...

It literally pains me that I did not like this book. When I saw Nate was getting his own book I was floored and marked the release date on my calendar. However I must say this book did not even come close to meeting my expectations. Not to mention like another reviewer notes, the blurb for the book is kind of misleading. I went in thinking we would have one story but it was something totally different, and for me-not in a good way! Since I never got them as a couple, to me this was a lost opportunity to bring it all back.

Meh

I feel like I waited forever for the us to come out, and I was just disappointed. My number one least favorite them slot sis filled by two distinct themes dead ex, sister screwing, and follows for a close second... single parent. This book had all thee. The sister was the dead ex and she never told him about the baby. On top of that I didn’t really like the heroine. She was older (almost 30) and was definitely missing the sweet quirkiness that we get in most of Tijans heroines. She manages to be both stuck up and trashy in certain places basic in the rest. This wasn’t what I was expecting at all. I thought Nate was going to end up with a friend of Aspens, and I was so exited for THAT story. This didn’t even feel like I was still in the Fallen Crest world. I just wish it was better. I bored out of my mind for most of it.

*This is going to be long, and a smidge ranty, but at this point I've spent alot of money and time on this series. So I had high expectations.*

It pains me to say this, but I didn’t care for Nates’s book… like at all. This will be spoilery, (my word) so proceed with caution if you intend to read this. From the blurb, we know that Nate has a daughter. It actually ends up being Val’s (she was the ONS he liked in Fallen Crest Forever) who never told him she was pregnant. Now she’s dead, and for some reason she leaves ½ guardianship to her half sis Quincey, who is tasked to track down Nate. Before I get to spoilering (also my word) I would just say that if you were a Fallen Crest fan, you might not like this, but if you’re reading it as a standalone… it might be ok.

I had A LOT of issues… here are a few.

Another addition to the very fabulous Fallen Crest world. Nate has always been a bit of a mystery to me so I have looked forward to his story. Throughout most of the book I wasn’t sure if I liked him or not. He was scrumptiously protective of his daughter and Quincy but his inability to convey any emotion was infuriating. By the end, however, he had proven himself and completely deserved that happily ever after.

As a side note - I feel really bad for Taylor! Logan has been with her for almost as long as anyone in this series yet he still hasn’t manned up and made anything at all permenent. Seriously it has been YEARS! And she is still hanging in there waiting? At this point, as funny as he can be, what a douche! She has to continue watching everyone else get their happy ending, have children and make a life. YUCK!

This is a tricky one to review.

I've been excited for Nate to have his standalone for a while. I've loved Sam's and Mason's story and Heather and Channing's story.

This was ok. The writing flowed well. It just didn't have the spark that I've found in other FC books.

Nate and Valerie had an f buddy agreement, until she cut him off and got engaged.
Years later, Nate confronts someone who has been following him and it's a PI.
Quincy is Valerie's half sister. Valerie has died and left Quincy with half custody of Nate's and her baby (who Nate knew nothing about).
Duke is Quincy's controlling and emotionally absusive father (who had separated her from her mother, step father and siblings growing up) and who encouraged Quincy to get the PI (to investigate his lifestyle and hope it meant that he wouldn't be interested in having a baby) and to confront Nate with the news about his daughter and to give him papers signing custody of baby Nova to her.
Nate calls in reinforcements of Mason and Logan and with help from lawyers and some soul searching of Quincy, she signs papers over to Nate and accepts his olive branch to move into his newly purchased home with Nova and him.
Nate makes it clear that there is no love between him and Quincy but is ok with a physical relationship.
Quincy continues to stand up to her father and attempts to reach back out to the family who her father poisoned her against. This is a work in progress.
Quincy recognises that she loves Nate but nothing will happen with that as he made it clear that it wouldn't
An accident has Nate recognising his feelings for Quincy. That and lots of chats with Blaise, Mason and Logan.
Quincy has some information to permanently keep her father at bay.

There is a HEA for Quincy and Nate.
It's a bit of a Prairie Soup with all of the support cast thrown in and keeping their roles relevant in this story.
I do feel bad for Taylor. She has to stand by while Logan is scared to commit. She has to stand by while everyone around them is getting married and are growing their families. It would be good to have a novella for Taylor as despite Quincy's HEA, I couldn't stop thinking about how Taylor would be feeling whilstnwatching that public proposal.

I was so excited about reading this, but I was dubious as recently Tijan has been hit and miss. So I waited for reviews to come out, and boy am I glad I did. Nate had a fwb’s deal with the heroine’s ex? Who also had his secret love child? This has every cliche and trope going, and I hate feeling like the heroine is a consolation prize or the relationship is already tainted, so definitely will be giving this a miss I am afraid. A shame, as Nate was one of my favourite characters from the Fallen Crest series. This seems to be a pattern though, or maybe no one can live up to Sam and Mason’s dedicated love, but Logan’s story and heroine bored me to tears, and here Nate’s story seems like a lifetime movie.

As a preface, while I am aware that these are fictional characters created by said author, I generally rate my reviews based on the characters, their actions, and circumstances as if they were people who exist in real life. I love Tijan and will be continuing reading her future work.

I’m sorry to say it, but this was a complete miss for me.

Okay....to put it less delicately.....

I really freaking hated this book. And what makes it all a bit worse is that:

1. I didn’t expect it to be so blah and 2. I really didn’t like any of the scenes with previous characters that I’ve always liked....except for Aspen and Blaise (from Rich Prick) but WTH they’re new characters from three book releases ago!!

******* SPOILERS ******* SPOILERS ******* SPOILERS ******* SPOILERS *******

Hells bells....I don’t really enjoy being a blatant book basher....but it’s time to vent.

What...in....the...ever loving hell is this??

Out of all of Tijan’s previous books, I’ve not liked a mere handful. I’ve loved her characters and writing style to the point where she announces a new book and I hit pre-order without question.

Woe is the Fool. Never again.

I’m not sure what I was expecting. Truth be told, I didn’t really have an expectation. I’ve read all of the Fallen Crest series and was simply anticipating a *slightly* dramatic love story, probably some fighting, and prevailing love....blah blah blah. What I got was a tickle down my spine going “Bet you know where this is going.” I did know....by the first chapter....I knew where it was going and I wanted to leave the ride.

As soon as I read the mention of continual-non-committal-horizontal-tango-partner...coupled with the PI....my mind screamed: BABY. BOOM.

So you think to yourself: Okay, sure. Nate has a girly friend who finds herself with child....they’ll suffer through some drama, their own and probably their families, get together, and raise their bundle of joy. THE END.

HA-HA. Nope.

Nate does in fact have a baby...he’s the proud new papa of a daughter. What else he has is the making of a headache. The baby mama had died and left their baby to be raised by her sister, Quincey. Which brings us to the DUN DUN DUN moment....The heroin of our cautionary tale is...you guessed it...Quincey.

WWWWWHHHHHYYYYYY?????

Why do authors keep doing this story arch? Does this happen a lot in real life? Do millions of people have babies and then get with the other person’s sibling? Do I keep having the bad luck of finding all these books with this subject? I just don’t like it here.

Quincey

The girl has a horrible family and an abusive dad. She’s heavily insecure (wonder why?) with how Nate really feels about her, her place in his life, and the life of her niece that she loves as her own daughter. She’s also a dancer.

Nate

He’s not a complete jerkface...he’s cute with his daughter. With his girl....dude needs some help. Mr. Ladykiller over here is not a smooth operator...no sir...he’s about as smooth as a telemarketer. His wooing should result in booing (BECAUSE IT DIDN’T EXIST). The man actually forgets to SAY ANYTHING directly to Quincey and when they had a “falling out” and he interpreted himself being added to the crap list...does he wallow? Pout? Beg for mercy?

Lol. No. The man actually glowers AT her, making her think he’s mad at her.

Nathaniel, sweet, sweet Nathaniel, has the emotional stability of a cracker...left to get soggy in soup. Somehow through most of the book he came off as being both a completely robotic man pretending to have and understand empathy while also having awkward heart to heart conversations with at least three major characters. I honestly don’t remember him feeling so unlikeable in the previous books but I hate this storyline so he never really had a fighting chance.

Who are these people?

Run down:

Sam: Olympic track runner
Mason: Pro football player
Married
Parents

Logan: Lawyer and still Logan but not as awesome.
Taylor: Nurse and a baller friend
No further commitment after Logan really
They have dogs

Oh....and the reason Logan STILL hasn’t proposed to Taylor is because he’s worried that since he was a complete hussy before (and a bit after) they got together that there is a chance that he’d resort to cheating like his father when life gets too real. This makes me so sad. I also hate this addition of drama because I had perceived Logan as finding his own stride in his book and with the love of his life creating a balance, the past and doubts would be laid to rest to move forward.

Oh well. As I said....

I love Tijan.
I love her characters.
I heavily dislike this book.

That’s all folks,
Happy reading!!

Loved it! I’ve wanted Nate’s story for a long time and this did not disappoint. We got an instant attraction that I love, but with the right kind of drama thrown in. I was intrigued by how things were going to work out and I loved watching Nate not only be a dad, but also see his protective side for Quincey. And added bonus is seeing Mason and Logan come and support Nate.

Although for those of us who have read and Love our Obession with the Fallen Crest Series, this is a book we have craved for quite a while and i could barely contain myself or believe it was here !!!
I must also say at this point that Nate's story can totally be read as a standalone.
My expectations with Tijan are always high, because she just doesn't give us books we love she gives us stories and characters that we just don't fall in love with, they stay with us permanently!!

Let me say right here that i'm having difficulty containing myself, i want to chant it out loud !!! NATE NATE NATE!!! This book bleeds deep into your emotions, taking you from sorrow to joy, to anger and pure pleasure. Pride, YES PRIDE in our mature Nate and the boys and what magnificent men they have become !!! But most of all its yet another reason to always expect the quality and depth of Tijan's characters and writing and another FC family moving permanently into our hearts !!!
Always there to support, always a little in the back ground, yet much more than just a friend to Mason and Logan Kade.
Well holy S**T BALLS !! This book is everything you want need and so much more !!
Now a very successful business man in his own right, I kid you not, Nate is a commanding presence, alpha, and man who controls his environment, and a man that is steadfast in getting what he wants and the way he wants it.
omg so THIS BOOK, from the word go, Nate's life is altered in seconds, it a curveball that would knock anyone off their feet !!
Quincey Royas has spent her life under the control of her Father, now she's being forced to face off against Nate Monson and come out the victor with the result her father wants....

His first contact with Quincey had me shivering!! This girl was not going to achieve her goal !!! BUT no Nate Monson, he just takes control, to bring the outcome to one that he will make sure happens both how and when he wants it !!
OMG SWOON SWOON A MAN IN SUCH CONTROL !!! I couldn't even set this book down. You know there is a battle coming and you know our guys are going to be right there in the middle of it !!
Of course Mason and Logan are right there for him, drop of a hat !! Would you expect less? Now this book is set a few years forward from Fallen Crest but our now mature guys are just as lethal !! I loved that both Mason and Logan were there for Nate, no questions asked, but even more than that.. they didn't take over they just provided everything Nate needed, to ensure his fight would be won,. Their bond so strong, emotionally, physically and mentally, it really show just what length these guys will go to for each other to protect their familys and those they love !!
MY HEART IS SALVED!!! Nate and Quincey's story blew me away from beginning to end. I already know this is An Absolutely Top Read of 2021 !!!
