It started with single comic book. Jeremy’s mother was determined to make a reader out of him. Shunning traditional literature at a young age, his mother placed X-Men Classic #69 in his lap and for the first time he was exposed to the phrases, “Mutants,” “BAMF,” and “SNIKT.” He is still waiting for his acceptance letter to the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters at 1407 Graymalkin Lane.

Despite voraciously consuming anything by R.A. Salvatore, Mercedes Lackey, and Laurel K. Hamilton, his first love remains the superheroes in comic books. Because of this he has written multiple series in the dystopian superhero universe, the Children of Nostradamus. He is a fan of fast-paced action, the darker side of humanity and incredibly snarky dialogue.

Jeremy became known as a geek before it was a trend. During college Jeremy would be shortened to Remy as friends discovered his goal of reading every X-Men comic. Being able to explain the many incarnations of Jean Grey and her alternate-dimensional children remains a badge of honor.

When not pounding away at the keyboard he is… nevermind, he’s always at his keyboard working on the next novel.

Taking place in New York during WWII, this alternate history has a bit of a diesel punk feel. Eleanor is unusual not just because of her modern sensibilities in a traditional world, but also because of her superhuman abilities which she struggles to understand on her own - until one day she learns she is not alone. These abilities put her in a unique position to solve a murder mystery vigilante style.

This book has a great cast of nuanced characters in an interesting setting. Eleanor's abilities are explored both through flashbacks and though a love affair that gets quite steamy in places. Her abilities are discussed in paranormal terms but as you learn more about her and the others similar to her it feels reminiscent of early X-Men. Lots of action, excitement, and settings that will feel familiar to Marvel fans.

This is book 1 in The Dawning of Superheroes series, which is in the shared universe of The Children of Nostradamus. This takes place prior to the The Night Series and can be read independently. As the first book in a series there is a lot of world building and promise of a thrilling series to come.

In an era when women are women and men are men, Eleanor thwarts all tradition, wearing trousers and fighting at a gym. Her ability of seeing ghosts who predict the future is confusing and frightening for her until she meets Edward,  who can mindread and do mind control. In the midst of all this, a killer is on the loose,  murdering others of her kind whom Eleanor wants to find  and stop. The characters are strong and likeable,  the story is unusual and well written. Contains mystery, murder,  psychic abilities, passion and more with action from start to finish.

This is a unusual type story that had me listening every available moment until the book was done. Narrator did a good job with the characters voices and the storyline. This is a story of a young woman who has a ability that her mother told her was a curse from the devil, but was actually Precognition. This is set during WWII and the MC does not fit in with proper society standards of the time.

A great read with a twist. Eleanor had a gift but it also at times was a curse. A strong female character who was not afraid to fight. She could definitely take care of herself. The ending had an unsuspected twist.

Thank you to NetGalley for an eARC copy of this book!

I *loved* that this was set during World War II, yet we focused on a woman who breaks all gender barriers of that time period. Of course, this is an alternate history, which completely worked, but the novel wasn't remiss in showing us that time of history (even if from a different perspective). This is the first in the series, and I'll be waiting for the next book to come down the line!

I was given a free copy of this book from Netgalley. I am leaving my honest review.

This takes place in New York City during WWII. Eleanor can see the future shortly before it happens. She is confused by her ability and unsure how to handle it. However, she is a strong woman, atypical for her time. She boxes, eschews dresses and makeup, and believes she's the equal of any man. She is a strong, well written character. As with all good characters, she has flaws as
well.

Eleanor ends up going after a serial killer. On the way she neets others with similar abilities

The book captured my interest. All of the characters were well written with the main character leading the pack.

I wouldn't classify this as a superhero book. It's more of an urban paranormal mystery.

I eagerly await the next in the series

Awaken the Daughter by Jeremy Flagg is an alternate history superhero novel. It is the first book in The Dawning of Superheroes series, part of the larger Children of Nostradamus world, and it is filled with delightful historical detail and great characters you will love to root for as they work to save their associates and the city as a whole.

Eleanor sees visions of the future, but she doesn’t know how to control them. She’s always worried that her power is more of a curse, maybe even demonically inspired. But in 1940s New York City, she begins to learn that perhaps she is not the only person with powers of this sort, and maybe they can help her use her powers for the greater good. But first, she’ll have to stop the person attacking and killing people like her.

Eleanor is a wonderful protagonist, perfectly flawed and believable. The supporting cast of characters are also carefully rendered and fleshed out, making the entire world quite plausible, even with the idea of superpowers and villainy floating around. If you enjoy other female heroes with strong personalities, sometimes in historical settings, like Agent Carter, Captain Marvel, and Wonder Woman, check out Awaken the Daughter and its sequels for a new hero to cheer for!

Set in WW2, Eleanor can see glimpses of the future - however she cannot change it. While she is a strong women she is unsure how to handle this ability. When she meets another person with a similar gift she learns she is not alone, but a serial killer is on a rampage killing people with gifts. Eleanor decides to go up against this serial killer

This book was really interesting! all the characters were fleshed out really well and the setting was portrayed amazingly. While I got paranormal vibes from this book it was also a lot like super hero novels - I really couldn't decide which was more prominent though. There was lots of excitement and action which I really loved. This is the first book in a series which is part of an already big universe of series, however it can be read as a standalone (which I did) perfectly fine

Eleanor knew she was different but she didn’t realize she wasn’t alone.  This is a thrilling tale of how she finds out more about herself... all while trying to stop a serial killer.

Jeremy Flagg has written a very unique and original story. I love the strong female lead and am intrigued to find out more about these mentalists.

Robin J. Sitten’s performance was quite enjoyable. Her portrayal of Eleanor matched up perfectly with how I imaged her.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.

Jeremy Flagg writes another great start to what looks like a great series! An engaging urban fantasy with a strong female lead. Eleanor is an excellent main character who continues to develop throughout the story. The world in which we find our MC is interesting and unique as well. Overall the story is well written. I look forward to book 2 in the series! Audio Version: Robin J. Sitten continues to do a great job with Jeremy Flagg's works. The narration and characters all sound great!

Are we special or are we Crazy?

There are some people who are different. I see ghosts but it was not until I moved to New York that I realized that other people did too. I also learned that there was a a serial killer who I was determined to stop. I might have bit off more than I could chew.

Enjoyed it.

It's hard to say what I liked about this book. It's clearly an attempt at this YA style stuff yet if I overlooked a few blatant things it was entirely readable. I'm sure there are a lot of young ladies out there that will say, "yeah, go girl" and enough boys that will say " where can I find her"? Still, it would be nice to know the lottery numbers ahead of time!

This was a different type of book. It may have been better for someone else but wasn't a big fan of this book. It maybe because it makes me think of what my husband has gone through with the military. The interesting part was because one character had ghost tell them about the visions and the ghost would show the future.

I was given a free copy of this book from Netgalley. I am leaving my honest review.

I am giving this book the benefit of the doubt by rating it three stars. I have been trying to read it for weeks but could not get through it, when I finally acknowledged that I could not put off writing the review because I could not finish it, I found I was 11% of the way through the book. Because I had not reached any conflict or plot elements, or gotten to know the characters yet, I will be giving it three stars in case the remaining 89% is a redeemable.

I was excited to read the book because the premise sounded really interesting, and had the potential for vibrant world building. Instead I found none of the scenes or characters described beyond the bare minimum needed to understand what was happening. The main character herself seems to be written as the archetypal "pick me girl" where from the very first chapter I felt the authors male gaze through the lens of this female character. Male authors can write fully fleshed out and real female characters, but I feel this author missed the mark, and could have benefited with more women looking over the book before publishing.

In the 11% of the book I managed to read I wasn't able to get much of the future telling aspect of the book which I was interested in, but it seemed like a really promising concept I was not able to get to because of poor character writing and lack of immersion into the world.
