My little bird escaped her cage. I will bring her back.

She is mine, and she belongs in my arms and in my bed. She must be reminded of that.

Painfully.

Each time she defies me, the consequences will be more severe and her surrender will be more shameful. When I'm done she will be sore and sorry, but I'm not just going to punish her.

I'm going to break her.

Again.

You know what? Fuck this whole entire book.

description

Ward - Torture porn
Gilded Cage - Gaslighting and mental abuse
Toxic - HEA!

I can't even wrap my mind around the attempt to give this series a "happy" ending. Twice (yes, twice!) while reading, I had to check to see if I missed a book or read something out of order. None of it makes sense, and I feel gypped out of a satisfying conclusion to this nightmare.

Series Spoilers Ahead

Its a bit hilarious that I feel more okay with the heinous shit that happened in book one than I do by anything that happened here. Duke Richard Payne is a total psychopath, and he certainly kept things interesting for a while.

At the end of the first book, Lizzie is about to kill Richard. The second book is a type of prequel that unravels to the reader that there is a backstory to these two characters. Richard had used a clinically-untested drug on her to force her to forget about it. So for the start of this one, we're back to where she pulls the trigger.

My hope for this story was that Lizzie would start to unravel all the deceit and abuse inflicted on her. But my hopes were completely dashed. Because instead, I got a fucking romance novel.

While Richard continued his shockingly manipulative bullshit with her, she just... pretended everything was fine. Through 100% of this book, all she did was swoon over him and all the gifts he gave her. He's doing all this nefarious shit, and she's over here all:

description

This one was filled with sex. Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex. And some of it was even hot, which made me ACTUALLY cringe. As Richard put forth this plot to enslave her on an island in Fiji (including masterminding an assassination attempt on himself), you're just reading all about their hot sex. No conclusion. No grand awakening by Lizzie. Its both the most half-assed AND the most infuriating series ending I've ever read.

So, moral of the story. Fuck this book. I thought with a solid ending I could actually recommend this series to a few people. But not this shit.

Nope.

Fuck this shit.

In this possibly the last/possibly not the last book in the relationship between Richard and Lizzie, I find that I am more confused by my feelings towards Richard than ever. He is sadistic, manipulative, and all consuming. And I can’t figure out if he is playing a devious and cruel game with Lizzie, he truly loves her, or some strange combination of the two

. In the past, Richard has captured Lizzie and convinced her she was living as his ward in a Victorian era. He has isolated her from her friends. He had manipulated her memory and thoughts, and yet, we’re never fully sure what Richard is thinking. Now, Lizzie is convinced someone is trying to kill her. But Richard has confused me as much as he has Lizzie.

As Lizzie attempts to escape Richard time and time again, she comes to realize that she will never actually be free of him. Each time she leaves, Richard finds her and brings her back to him, and gaslights her into believing that she is imagining all of the friends conspiring against her, all of the threats made towards her, all of the attempts on her life. And as the reader, I find that I’m right there with Lizzie. I’m not sure whether Richard is sincere or not! Even after reasonable explanations are given, and even after the lengths Richard goes through to rescue the woman he adores, there seems to be a hint of question left as whether Richard is to be believed.

“Toxic” accurately describes the relationship between these two people, who are entirely wrapped up in one another to the point of madness. We are taken down a fascinatingly dark and dirty path as Lizzie realizes that Richard is someone she can trust, and yet someone she cannot live without. Zoe Blake’s writing is engaging and edgy and a real psychological treat.

Stayed up a lil late to finish this 😬

RTC!

*Full Review*

Lizzie reminds me of that TikTok sound: Is it me? Am I drama? I don't think I'm the drama...

I gave this 4 stars because I wanted a more badass heroine but instead it's the same thing that we saw in book one, which is that Richard still has the upper hand. Boo.

The thing that pissed me off was when Lizzie had an extended sequence where she toyed around with the idea that she is the mastermind. She keeps running away in order to force Richard's hand. He will always run after her and try to get her back. While I like that interpretation because it gives her back her agency since it means she was playing the role all along, Lizzie just isn't it.

If you are sick of characters who are glued to the hip, this book made me laugh a few times. LIZZIE WAS AWAY FROM RICHARD FOR ONE HOUR and then she shows up to his house. Like. What.

She just discovered she wasn't living in the Victorian era and tried to shoot him but after talking with her friend, guess she's convinced that Richard isn't a bad guy but does everything for her. Yes, he's gaslighting her because she's asking for it. Lord.

Lizzie is complicit, and I think that was an interesting layer, but because Lizzie never goes badass, it comes off as victim-blaming. She blames herself. I don't want to read about a heroine who's so lacking in self-awareness. Also. Every time she has some introspection, she quickly forgets. And it's ok for the first few times but damn. I was temporarily excited by the direction of the story where Lizzie thinks Richard is going to kill her but that quickly devolves into a Richard scheme...

I would have had more fun if Richard had to sweat a little. I did enjoy this, and the smut was good, overall. A more even blend of erotica and psychological thriller would have been nice.

The title is very apt. I would not categorize this book as a romance. It is a psychological thriller with a bunch of painful sex thrown in. Richard torments Lizzie. She is his caged bird to taunt and manipulate. He views her as a possession to conquer, break, and control.

In my opinion, Richard is a psychopath who is incapable of love. He only loves himself and he derives enjoyment from abusing Lizzie. There are some hot scenes between these two but we know that Lizzie has been given pills to erase her memory and she has been gaslighted so she has no idea what is real. She is always questioning Richard’s intentions to her.

Because we get to read Richard’s POV we know this is all a game to him and that he plans to completely isolate her on an island and play a new game with her after they’re married. This book ends on a sort of cliffhanger in that we know Lizzie isn’t going to get a HEA, just more psychological abuse and punishments. I was hoping for Richard to actually fall for Lizzie but that was never conveyed. He said the words but never followed up with his actions. Now I wonder when Richard will tire of his caged bird and dispose of Lizzie for a younger, unbroken girl to abuse. It was an entertaining book, but certainly not a love story! I did enjoy this series.

Note: This book was graciously provided by Zoe Blake and her team for an honest review. Thank you for the opportunity!

What a perfect trip this book was to read! This installment of Richard and Lizzie's story was high on my wish list. I must say that I even set the alarm to try to receive an ARC of this book, and I was not disappointed in the slightest.
Toxic picks up right where we left Lizzie in Gilded Cage (so we start off with a bang!). From her final moments in the second installment, her life changed forever. Readers see as Lizzie is pulled in all sorts of directions, trying to understand what is reality and what is manipulated.

One of my favorite aspects of the novel was an air of mystery that carried on in the story. There were moments where I didn't know what was lurking around the corner, which enhanced the experience and spurred on my need to continue turning the pages.

Is this a Dark Obsession book if I do not mention the fantastic fashion that Lizzie gets to wear?! I love that the author did research and had an understanding of various designers. High fashion has a place both in Lizzie's new world as well as her heart. It is a passion, and it is one that carries through the series. (I mean I'm over here green with envy over some of the designers!)

As mentioned earlier, this book is a dark romance. There are adult themes explored in this series. Richard is as twisted as characters come and will go to extreme lengths to keep Lizzie at his disposal.

Overall thoughts: I loved the third installment! The book was page-turning and hard to put down. Couple that with the desire to figure out what games Richard is playing, and you have a guilty pleasure read at its finest.

Wow!! Just Wow!! This is one serious mind trip! It's a dark, twisted, steamy, angsty , savage, obsessive, sadistic, emotional rollercoaster ride that is simply what the readers are taken on that is Richard and Elizabeth’s story.  Richard is determined to make Elizabeth play his sick mind games. He is obsessed, completely obsessed and determined to cause pain to his Little Bird thru his sick mind games. Everything has to be done by his own rules. Poor Elizabeth, she honestly doesn't know if she's coming or going. Is Richard going to be loving and kind or brutal and punishing towards her? Their relationship is just messed up in the worst way but that's what makes this a great read because the reader is literally hanging on the edge, not knowing what will happen next. Many things happened in this read and the ending was one that has me wondering is this the last we'll see of Lizzie and Richard. It's open ended to interpretation but I really hope that we'll see this couple again. This truly is a Toxic Love Story that brings the angst and the obsession out full force.

My Rating: 4.6 stars **********

I was really looking forward to this book but it was not what I expected. Richard and Lizzie stay true to their characters and the author writes well but somehow I expected it to end with a bang not a groan of here we go again. I certainly wondered what Zoe would do in this book because there was no way it could end in a HEA if the characters remained true. It certainly isn’t an HEA because Richard remains as depraved, manipulative, conniving and brazen in his ability to get whatever he wants, and he wants Lizzie. Lizzie unfortunately remains as naive, addicted to pain with pleasure and hopeful that somehow Richard will change somewhat. She doesn’t want all the rough sex to go away just some of it could be a little softer. Richard being Richard will do anything and use anybody to manipulate Lizzie into choosing whatever he wanted in the first place and boy does he get it. I really expected him to kill her so that *he* could have her forever. DON’T READ FURTHER. SPOILER AHEAD. Instead we are left with just more of the same. No big finale. That is why I gave it three stars,. The other two books are far more captivating and enthralling in my opinion.

Yeah, well this gets a nope from me. Skim read the 3 books and it's a hot mess. Disliked both H and h. Couldn't tell you which one I disliked more.

Giving 2 stars as albeit sadistic in places and/or borderline torture p0rn at times - some of the erotica was hot and inventive, I will give it that...

It’s one thing for an author to mind-f*** a character.

It’s another game entirely to mind-f*** a reader.

Zoe Blake spins a captivating tale of mutual obsession that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Although this story does have a happy ending, I was left wondering when the other shoe would drop and Elizabeth would catch on to Richard’s manipulations. The question remains unanswered at the end, making it both satisfying and extremely frustrating.

The sexytimes are over the top hot. I still can’t decide if I like “crazy Richard” or “sweet Richard” better, but the ending was most definitely true to his character.

Toxic is the final installment in the “Dark Obsession” trilogy, following Ward and Gilded Cage. They should be read in order.

This was phenomenal in every single way the writing is truly amazing and takes you on a trip you will not forget , the twists and turns and what to believe is this the game or real.
I love Richards sadistic obsession with Elizabeth who manages giving her all back. Such strong characters you can feel it all through the words and I loved it and could read forever about these two.

So, so good!

Okay, so I loved the entire series from start to finish. There's kinkiness, suspense, mystery, intrigue - did I mention the kinky sex part? AND - if that wasn't enough, there's a mean and twisted Alpha Dom in the mix (who's aristocracy!) who has my heart all a flutter.

I'm not sure I've ever met a Dom as cunning as Richard Paine, but oh, the man was delicious - in a 'I'm glad I'm reading this in a book kind of way.' I'm not sure I could handle him in real life - so good luck, Lizzie - you're going to need it!

Is there any chance of that island sequel? Enquiring minds need to know!!

Garbage

Well, the psychotic P.O.S. succeeded in completely and thoroughly brainwashing Lizzie into marrying him, telling her when they exchanged wedding vows that what she should hear is (and this is verbatim from the book), "I, Richard Payne, the third dude of Winterbourne and various other exalted titles of the realm, do hereby claim Elizabeth Adelaide Larkin as my own. She will love, honor, and OBEY (emphasis his) me as her rightful lord and Master, forsaking all others and remaining faithful in her duty to me in mind, body, and soul, for as long as she lives, or face the consequences of my wrath." Yet we're supposed to believe that narcissistic nutcase actually loves her! If you still have some twisted notion that he's just misunderstood or it's really not that bad, read some of these excerpts directly from the book and tell me if this sounds like a happy, healthy, loving relationship to you, or if it seems abusive and controlling.

RICHARD: "I will make sure no one ever comes near you again."
LIZZIE: 'Thinking back to the isolation of his estate, when he had me truly believing I was in the Victorian era with no access to any form of communication, friends, or help, I now wondered what an extreme version of that would be...and if I would survive it.'

RICHARD: 'I couldn't keep her hidden away at my country estate forever. Eventually, that powerful drug would wear off, and she was bound to ask questions.
I had to fight the urge to spirit her away again...even if it was against her will.
Even though I had access to several more memory pills, I was reluctant to use them. Although it worked perfectly in the beginning, it was clear the more stress I put her under, the worse the side effects became. It took the spirit and challenge out of the game to see her so confused. I preferred my girl to be more spirited, to fight and challenge me. Otherwise, where was the fun in forcing her to submit to my demands?'

RICHARD: 'The idea that she had freedom of choice in our relationship needed to stop. She was mine. Full stop.'

RICHARD: 'I needed to control everything about her...even when she breathed.'

RICHARD: "You don't want to see what would happen if you ever truly tried to leave me."

ELIZABETH: 'I wasn't allowed to own a mobile (phone) anymore."

ELIZABETH: 'I closed my eyes, waiting for the interrogation to begin and wondered what the punishment would be.'

To the very end, Richard manipulated, lied to, and gaslighted Elizabeth to the point that she thought his severely overcontrolling, domineering, abusive ways were love. He actually had her believing that SHE was the one that manipulating HIM! That he was the victim and she was the one causing drama! He even had himself shot to scare her into thinking someone was after them so that she'd suggest sequestering themselves away on an island where he could totally isolate her from anyone else and control her with an iron fist! He actually framed an ex of his to take the fall for it! He's a sick, twisted, manipulative psychopath who's incapable of love! It sickens me that author, in her trigger warnings for the book series, refers to this as D/s themes! Um, no, Zoe Blake, NOTHING about this book has anything to do with the BDSM lifestyle! The cornerstone of BDSM and D/s relationships is safe, sane, and consensual! Nothing about Richard or he and Elizabeth's relationship is any three of those things! I hope nobody thinks this even remotely resembles what a D/s relationship, or ANY relationship, for that matter, looks like! Richard is a sadistic psycho who needs to be locked up in a mental institution for the rest of his life!

This book is not a romance novel, not even a dark romance novel. Nothing about this is romantic, loving, or to be envied! If you or someone you know is with a partner who treats you in any of the ways Richard treats Elizabeth (unless the violent/rough kinky sex is 100% consensual, and not coerced consent, but actual, freely given consent, then RUN! RUN FAR AND RUN FAST! No one who loves you hurts you when you beg them to stop or beg them not to do it in the first place. They don't manipulate or gaslight you; they respect your opinion rather than punish you for disagreeing with them. In fact, they don't physically or verbally punish you for anything you say or do! They don't force you to drop out of college; they don't isolate you from friends, family, coworkers, or fellow students. They don't punish you for trying to break off the relationship, and they shouldn't make you feel afraid of them. These are all HUGE RED FLAGS!

I have no problems with kink, BDSM, D/s, or rough sex. But I found this book offensive because it tried to pass off Richard's behavior as what someone who loves you does, or what a "real man" does, or a manifestation of intense love, and that it should be flattering. The way Elizabeth constantly rationalized his behavior or blamed herself was classic abuse victim mentality. It disgusted me to see it portrayed as romantic!

This is one of the most twisted, obsessive, dark and TOXIC love stories. Poor Lizzie is confused, in love and fragile under Richard's dominant control. Feelings are twisted but you question if love is really strong enough to survive Richard's mind games. There are times I questioned whether this was really about power exchange, Lizzie was more of a victim most of the time, yet she always goes back and always gives in to her toxic obsession with Richard. The twists and turns keep you turning the pages as you are just as obsessed as our beloved couple. I have a feeling we just might get to re-visit this dark, twisted couple again some time in the future, I sure hope so!

“Savage Games” is the finale of Lizzie and Richard’s story.

Honestly, this is just him manipulating him even more after drugging and gaslighting for two books. I’m very frustrated by such books where the main lead has zero redeeming qualities and female lead cannot catch a break. This was definitely not a romance, felt more like an abusive relationship where the man held all the power and controlled the heroine with sex.

I didn’t enjoy it. Kept waiting for a moment where I could have.

When I first started reading this series I was so blown away by their fascinating story that when the second book came out I was hesitant to start it. And then I was completely taken on another whirlwind ride and head over heels. And guys, I did not think Zoe could outdo herself again (like how?) but she DID. This book, Richard and Lizzie, the depths of their love and depravity and emotional insight. This book is like opening some kind of portal to where heaven meets hell-which I imagine is just a glimpse into Richard’s head, and I have so many answers and yet so many questions. And just like Elizabeth, I’m both dreading and impatiently anticipating what happens next. If I happen to go into labor later today I’m not saying it was the book, but I’m also not not saying it was the book! Find a space to sit and devour this book because I promise once you start it you won’t put it down until it’s done!!

Obsessive, compulsive, toxic love

4.5 stars

This series just gets better and better arriving at the finale of Richard and Elizabeth’s story. This time we have romantic suspense and intrigue carrying this unquenchable love affair.

e-book image

Once again I was drawn to this frankly toxic, though at times, almost enviable relationship. What’s not to love? Richard is at it again with his mind games and obsessive behavior. He is so completely enthralled by his little bird Elizabeth that he spoils her, acceding to her every desire (as long as it involves him), pampering her in priceless jewelry, high fashion, and gourmet meals. Richard is a romantic, yes, but never doubt the lengths he will go to rule their love, even to exerting his brand of dominance through pleasure out of pain. I expected nothing less from someone of his enormous wealth and immeasurable need for control with an eccentric affinity for the Victorian period.

The author portrayed an artistry in rending the story so visually simulating as it be physically present in the scenes, from the attire, jewelry, meals to their dwellings. I felt as if I were actually in England or moonlighting in Paris. Also, the telling of this love affair was written almost poetically, the choice of words, the behaviors and formalities in some ways calling to mind the classics, like Pride and Prejudice.

Richard remained steadfast to his character as well as his treatment of Elizabeth, sometimes abusive / quasi sadistic, though now she liked it, welcomed it in their quasi D/s relationship. In reading this story I was left on edge, never knowing what to expect — would he be gentle or punishing, would Elizabeth incur his anger, incite his dominance because of her naïveté? What remains true is that Richard has no limits in attaining what he wants, and he will forever want Elizabeth who fully embraces submission, accepting of his obsessive love.

One of the most creative books I’ve read, just excellent writing and captivating storyline. It will incite feelings that stay with you after it is over. I’m left pondering how it came together, yet certain that Richard has twisted my, as well as his little bird’s, understanding of what really did or did not occur in this tale. Great read.

Ok just finish reading it and my first reaction is, Toxic feels more tame than the two previous books. Hard to explain without being spoiler, but I feel like the sadistic, mind games Richard play more smooth and luring instead of full on agresif like the other books.
But maybe because he used an opportunity present to him by his vendetta ex.
Or maybe because now Richard would do anything to seal the deal aka bind her as his legally in marriage. Makes him play his game smoother.

While Elizabeth... She's in love. She's that Stockholm syndrome or what ever it call for someone who grow attached to people who held them captive, play with their mind and basically use her body and mind against her.
But the way she always feel way beneath Richard, she feel undeserved his love, I think it play the part of how easy and how hard she falls for him.

Then again if I'm in Elizabeth shoes, I might be exactly do what she do.
This man is the perfect book boyfriend. He's handsome. He's hot. Filthy rich. A duke. Know his way between the sheet or of😂. He's dominant yet protective. This man is perfect unless for his twisted sadistic nature.

In this third book, Richard is... Mylawwwd how the author make me lust with Richard skill with a woman body, craved his dominant nature, falling in love with his gentlemanly way on focusing him self to his woman and yet I do fear him for his sadistic, cruel, possesif and mind games... Bring all the standing applause for the author!

I need book four. That's all I'm saying for the ending. I was left gaping at the end for it feels more twisted n sadistic game are "needed"

But at the end, beside the dark n mind twisted sadistic, Richard and Elizabeth's story is one love story when a man found a woman he need in his live at first sight and a woman who fall in love to her Prince.

I have read many books and series in my time and this one is by far my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE SERIES HANDS DOWN NO CONTEST. Obsession at it’s finest in this beautifully twisted tale! Richard and Lizzie’s story continues in this third installment. There were so many times I wanted Lizzie to run for her life only to be conflicted and want Richard to jump from behind the corner. And every time he shows up I'm so scared for Lizzie anticipating what will come next. Only Richard could twist my thoughts in so many directions. I hated and loved him all at the same time!

The details and careful descriptions the author gives paints the most beautiful pictures. From the locations, to the fashion, and seductively wicked details. I was completely transported into this crazy dark rollercoaster world only Zoe Blake can create.

The only negative thing I can say is that this story had to end. Or did it… Please don’t let this be the end Zoe!!! I could read their toxic love story forever!

The first book in this trilogy was amazing and intriguing. The second book was mildly irritating. This last book was flat-out disappointing.

There wasn’t even a redemption track! Just Lizzie being gaslighted by everyone into thinking she’s the puppet master, and that Richard is her victim 🙄 and the OW drama was terrible. At least Lizzie had some empathy for her. Richard framing the OW was horrible.

Are we just to assume that Lizzie never gets her memories back and lives in la-la-land forever? That she never breaks free from Richard? That she gives him a son, and then all is good in the world?

Hell. ZB could’ve at least written a scene where Richard gets locked in the gilded cage! She could’ve given us SOMETHING that made us feel vindicated 😰 That man needs to be executed.

All in all, I wouldn’t recommend this series to anyone.

One of the things that I love the most about Ms Blake's writing, is that it's like reading poetry. Dark, depraved, and twisted, yet at the same time rich, shimmering, brightly colored poetry. I am, as usual, find myself in giddy awe at the world she's painted for us. A world that is as exquisite as a brightly colored, iridescent peacock. But underneath the beauty is the swirling, wreathing, murky mass of darkness that only Zoe Blake can capture. These lovers have jumped headfirst down a disturbing but sensual rabbit hole, and I'll be damned if I didn't happily jump in right behind them. Well done, Zoe! This series is a masterpiece of erotic darkness and poetic prose!!
