How can I motivate my child? Why is one child so different from the other? These and other questions reflect the confusion many parents feel. The author encourages them to discover the appropriate learning style according to the personality of each child, helping them to understand why their children react to the daily challenges of school and family life in the way they do. When applying these concepts, their children will quit making excuses, grow in their self-esteem and will become more responsible and successful at home and at school.

This was ok. Good & generally helpful information but for me, the 4 learning style groupings were hard to keep straight and didn’t fit my world overly well. Still had some good takeaways on celebrating and working with every persons uniqueness but no big lightbulb moments.
The basic information about learning styles and practical applications for each style was extremely helpful. I'm sure I'll come back to it again and again as I seek to help my children use their strengths and strengthen their weaknesses. I couldn't give the book a higher rating, however, because I disagreed with some of the larger, more foundational principles set forth and because the author seemed to get carried away in personal opinions.
Though an older resource, this book provides a helpful overview of 5 different methods, integrated for understanding how we can picture ourselves according to our many styles of learning. I like it best, for the varied but simplified explanations kids and parents can use, with examples to practice parenting towards these learning styles.
Your student may struggle - but they can succeed. Tobias combines research with her experience as a Truancy Officer and special education teacher to give a powerful demonstration that every single child can learn - they may just not learn the same way that others do! She offers suggestions on how to help them, but her most detailed work on learning styles is in "The Way They Learn"
I like the way this book was organized, very logical and straightforward. Because it's mainly about children's different learning styles, I need to reread this in a few years when the girls learning styles are a little more pronounced.
I mostly scanned through this book. It was helpful in learning more about different learning styles and how to work with your child's learning style. It furthers my opinion of the "one size fits all" education really doesn't fit all. It's challenging to work with many different learning styles and be able to address each child's needs, but how much more effective is the teaching if they can. We tend to think if a kid can't still and listen, they must have ADD. But what if they are a kinesthetic learner that learns better by moving? How do we work with that? This book covers not just learning in school but also as parents. How different messages or methods are needed from discipline to motivating your child.
I've recently moved and being a former teacher I'm rethinking my collection of nonfiction books. As a book lover, I can't get rid of a book without giving it a chance. By giving this book a chance, I realized it's not just for educators. This is a great resource for parents and anybody who works with people could glean something from this book.
Every child can succeed will stay in my collection. It has shed light on myself and on my interactions with others.
So practical and helpful! Understanding my own learning style and being able to recognize the learning styles of those around me, especially my child's, is a huge help in emphasizing strengths rather than pinpointing problems. Great insights to help others, and myself, achieve success!
Someday I will meet Cynthia Tobias, or at the very least, see her speak in person. Wonderful book by a wonderful author. One to buy and read again and again!
