A foundation stone of European literature, linking Norse, Celtic and Arthurian myth Beowulf is also a terrific read!
Beowulf is an epic poem probably written in the 900s CE. It tells of events 600 years before in vivid detail, where the hero Beowulf is entreated to help a king defend his halls against the monster Grendel. The poem was written in old English, about a hero of the Goths (the early Swedish people) who came to help the King of the Danes. Its vivid accounts bear some historical evidence, and served to influence heroic literature of Europe and the modern era.

2.5 ⭐ — I really liked the story and the background of it but there was just too much information not pertaining to beowulf and I just did not have the attention span for it.
This one has a nice introduction to the history of the story, and re-reading it gave me much more of a sense of where Tolkien and other fantasy authors drew inspiration from. It is odd to notice Christian interpolations in an otherwise pagan text, but all the same, a classic.
Felt that the information at the beginning and end are very helpful in understanding the larger context of the myth. Could have used footnotes or an appendix of words that are not in the common English vernacular today however.
