The Holiday Hookup

Rate this book
Reasons why Hunter Holliday is on my Naughty List:

1. He dresses like it's Casual Friday every day of the week.

2. Everyone loves him, even though I'm pretty sure he doesn't actually get any work done. It's the smile, I think. Definitely the laugh.

3. He's so relaxed, sometimes I can't even tell if he's awake. Or conscious.

4. He doesn't respect my office space boundaries. Stay in your own office and stop messing with my stuff!

Okay, the list is actually really long, but none of it matters because it's time for the annual Secret Santa exchange, and guess whose name I draw.

Hunter freaking Holliday

And he knows this because, I repeat, he won't stay out of my office and leave my things alone.

Even though I didn't ask, he has no problem telling me exactly what he wants.

Me. For one night

The Holiday Hookup is an MM Christmas short story with high heat and low angst.

This is not the type of short story that works for me. And I don’t like Hunter. The way he is described, I can’t get this image out of my head:

If I could give this story negative stars, I would. I've read thousands of MM romance novels, and this one is undoubtedly in the bottom five of all time.

It's utter rubbish: poorly written and amateurish, with no character development or plot (no HEA/epilogue either).

I nearly DNF, but ended up skimming instead because it was so short.

Thanks to the author for glorifying sexual harassment
(/s). Persistence apparently pays off because one MC bullies (under the guise of teasing) the other at WORK for YEARS and finally gets what he wants.

It's childish. It's unprofessional. It's gross. It's disturbing. And it's not even remotely funny.

I'm honestly shocked that anyone could laugh at this offensive bullshit.

I guess when it's a man sexually harassing another man, especially one who's smaller and "less cool" than him, it's okay??

The author can just fuck right off with this garbage. 😡

This short Frenemies to Lovers novella was quite a bit of fun to read.

Finn was a slightly-snooty, judgemental, snarky workaholic, while the other MC was most definitely... NOT.

And former football player Hunter was akin to that little boy in class who pulled the pigtails of the little girl in his class, because he *liked* her, but didn't know how to express his feelings.

But since Finn didn't enjoy having his proverbial pigtails pulled on the regular by the annoying jock in his office, the two were extremely unlikely to ever get together.

That was, until Hunter decided to show Finn how "persistently romantic" he could be, which was very entertaining to witness.

Granted, if anyone pulled half of the pushy, space invading escapades in real life that Hunter did on me, I'd probably punch them in the throat, but it somehow worked here, even coming across as goddamn charming, in spite of my attempts to dislike the freaking guy.

My only real complaint was that, at only 60 pages, there weren't enough pages to fully savor the developing, reluctant attraction, so it felt like a simplified-down romance, with events sped up a little too much to fully cultivate any genuine feels.

However, since I knew that it was a short going in, I was mostly okay with the rushed pace of them deciding to give their relationship a go.

4.25 stars.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Romantically persistent stars.

Look. I could nitpick about how in real life, Hunter would be raising some big red flags. (You know he would!)

But it’s Christmas and I’m not going to be the book Grinch today. Because this was so damn cute, I didn’t care. I smiled the whole way through. I don’t have the best track record with this author but I thought this was delightful.

🎄 Reluctant Porcupine vs Persistent Golden Retriever.
🎄 Christmas Magic.
🎄 A dash of pining.
🎄 Short and sweet.
🎄 Zero angst.
🎄 Unrealized heart eyes.
🎄 Lowish steam but still sexy.
🎄 A one sitting read.

This is how you write a feel good Christmas novella. You know I love my angst but even (most of) us angst lovers need a break from time to time. This was a cup of cocoa in book form. 🥰

Shout out to one of my book besties Alyssa for putting this on my radar. 💜

[4.25] Hunter is one of those characters whose actions will come across romantic if you’re enamored with the guy, and if you’re not, then, well, you’ll probably see him as an overbearing stalker 🤣 luckily i was able to view him as more “romantically persistent,” as he calls himself, although his pov at the end might’ve set off an alarm bell or two LOL but for a novella, this was actually pretty fun!

2** stars

Well, I thought I start the season early. I mean there are already Christmas sweets in the stores, right? And this one sounded like a perfect kick-off. It even started out as something I would normally enjoy very much.

But I got irritated with Hunter, his persistence towards Finn and his lazy persona (I first thought was a joke, but no) real fast. So much so, that in the end the only thing I felt was uncomfortable.

DNF at 39% and it’s only 60 pages. Workplace sexual harassment anyone? And boring AF. I’m out.

Wow! The author pulled out all the stops with this awesomely funny love story!

Finn is cool and all, but Hunter is completely absolutely adorable!! This might be short but it is perfectly complete!

DNF at 32%

Usually when I DNF'ed I don't always put my thoughts here. I just take the note on the book file personally and move on. But I read contradictory reviews on this and I had to add my opinion. In the first two chapters, I could give Hunter a benefit of doubt. Maybe Finn is just being a little prickly.

But in the third chapter (around 30% in my Kindle), not long after Finn said NO, Hunter grabbed Finn's arm, spun Finn around until Finn's back hitting the brick wall.

SO THAT'S A HUGE NO! That's definitely a sexual harassment limit for me. IF Finn is a female character, and this happens, I will scream the same thing. Just because Finn is a man, it doesn't make it okay. That's not the way to flirt or woo someone in my book. Maybe if the book has dubious/non-consent tag in it. But definitely not a light holiday romance that I expected

"You are the bane of my existence. The most irritating person I've ever met—" I cut him off. "And you're everything I want."

it was kinda slow for such a short book but it wasn't bad.

My friend Phil recently featured a few queer holiday novellas and short stories on Bookstagram, and I had to snap a few of them up ASAP. I’m so glad I did!

In The Holiday Hookup , Finn is a workaholic and his coworker, Hunter, may be the laziest guy around, no matter how hot he is. Hunter is always flirting and laying on the sexual innuendo, and Finn is his regular target. As good as it might be to hook up with Hunter, Finn refuses to give in. (Although he sure could use it...)

But when Finn draws Hunter’s name in the office Secret Santa game, Hunter makes it clear what he wants: one night with Finn. Will that be enough for either of them? This is a steamy and cute story.

THE HOLIDAY HOOKUP was a cute and short Christmas novella. I really liked the set up: Workaholic Finn can't stand his slacker coworker Hunter so he's dismayed when he realizes he gets Hunter's name for their office's Secret Santa party. When the nosy Hunter finds out he tells Finn he wants one night with Finn as his Christmas present.

As much as Finn is annoyed by Hunter he's also attracted to him and it was cute the way Hunter would get under Finn's skin. Sometimes I felt like Hunter pushed buttons too much and it made me wonder what Finn saw in him other than just physical attraction. I also have to be honest, Baylin Crow may have overemphasized Hunter's lazy and sleepy demeanor to the point that I was concerned about his health. Outside that, this was cute and has me interested in reading more by the author.

I absolutely loved Hunter and Finn in this short Holiday book. They were just what I needed with their snark and sexiness. I had a huge smile by the end of the book

This was my absolute fave. It was fast, cute, funny and romantic. I liked how persistent Hunter was in approaching Finn. Finn being uptight as he was, despised Hunter but deep down he was attracted towards the Former Jock.

"Don't you like them?"

He glares harder. "Not to open at a work party, Hunter."

"Noted." I smother a laugh. How was I supposed to know boxers that said unwrap me baby with a bow printed over the crotch wasn't work appropriate? Seems acceptable to me, especially now that we are finally dating.

Hunter was a breath of fresh air which swept Finn away. I loved their banter it was cute, at times I laughed out because I could feel Finn's irritation over Hunter's stalking skills in getting what he wants, but it worked out pretty well.

As Hunter says he's "Romantically Persistent" which was absolutely right.

Another try with this author, it's a Christmas novella, what could possibly happen? Well.. I really, really didn't like it. Seems i can't appreciate Crow's work.
The mcs imo were annoying, the plot not cute or adorable, just irritating.

I didn’t enjoy it. The characters are poorly described, the tropes don’t have enough space to develop in the proper way. Frankly, it was quite surreal - not in a positive way. Hunter was a massive creepy red flag, Finn a massive vanilla one.

I absolutely loved this!!!
These two gave me all the Snowbaz vibes!

Finn is really annoyed by his coworker, the bane of his existence, Hunter. Always barging into his office at all hours, rearranging his things…being all hot and muscular, flirting with him. Simply unacceptable. 😌
Hunter is a super laid back, chill guy, who doesn’t have the same work ethics Finn has. More so because the most interesting thing at work is his coworker Finn, who he has been trying in vain to woo for years now.
The thing is: Finn doesn’t even get it. 😂
So when Finn picks Hunters name for the secret Santa exchange, Hunter finally sees his chance.

I loved these two together.
Hunter just sneakily crawling his way into Finns life and his heart. Finn being all uptight and grumpy finally getting his perfect balance.
I love stories where characters are just polar opposites and balance each other out so perfectly. I also love stories where one night just turns into one of them never leaving again.

Persistently romantic. 😌😂

I loved this story!!!
*Btw it’s very steamy. 👀

I liked this quite a bit but probably would have loved it had it had more pages. There just weren't enough pages to get a really good feel for the enemy aspect of the story. Since they've worked together for years I feel like I needed a better understanding of their relationship and all that annoying teasing please pay attention to me stuff that went on.

But, since this is a Christmas story and I tend to not be so judgy I'm just going to go with the fact I liked it.

It was cute and fun.

DNF @ 35%.

Ahh, how romantic when your coworker constantly harasses (generally and sexually) you.

Maybe a little less focus on describing ever single character’s appearance and a little more on making a likeable character.

3 strikes, Baylin Crow is out.

A light-hearted office romance that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The Holiday Hookup is a short story and a fun time. It’s set during the holiday season, with the run up to the office christmas party.

“It’s not stalking, I’m romantically persistent”

This was a super-cute fun little holiday read. One character is a workaholic who is pretty sure he loathes the other one, a laid-back guy who comes into his office and “bothers” him all the time, while the other is basically relentlessly pursuing him. It made me smile several times.
