Rate this book
In the tiny European country of Tantalia, Princess Niobe is being groomed to ascend to the throne. Secretly, the Princess has been trained by her martial arts instructor, Gethan, to kill the businessman responsible for her parent’s deaths. Once queen, she will have ‘sovereign immunity’ and be free to kill without prosecution.

Niobe strikes and then again, but unbeknownst to her, her second kill is caught on video and she is identified as an assassin. Her people, however, seem accepting of the idea and of their Queen’s unconventional shadowy activities. Then a TV producer comes to her with a novel idea – how about a reality tv show about her next kill?

Safe in the knowledge she can’t be prosecuted Niobe ponders, and eventually agrees. But there are more questions than answers… for a start – how will the world respond to a sovereign assassin?

Sovereign Assassin is a rollicking romp of a story, fresh from the mind of speculative fiction/fantasy author Robert New, and promises to entertain, intrigue, and fascinate from beginning to end.

I received an ARC through Booksirens and I am leaving a review voluntarily.

Sovereign Assassin is a satirical novel that details the life and unexpected endeavors of a young queen Niobe, who just so happens to have sociopathic tendencies.

I found this novel to be quite uncomfortable given the nature of the queen and how much I had to step out of my comfort zone to understand her as the story moved forward. It’s not every day the star heroine is also the villain, protected by her sovereign immunity as she kills. My personal background in psychology gave me a unique lens with which to view Niobe as she progressed through the story. I found it enjoyable to be challenged in such a way.

The writing and pacing were both well done, but sometimes felt flat with respect to certain emotional or intense scenes. The story is also heavy with martial-arts and war philosophy, as well as the human condition and a few theoretical perspectives. At times it was hard to keep up with if you were unfamiliar with the texts. This novel is definitely intended for adult and advanced readers in that regard.

Overall a well thought and executed satire that showed a fairly realistic interpretation of what happens when a leader truly has no limitations.

I was most taken with the context and theme of Sovereign Assassin by Robert New. I found it engaging and original.
The story takes place in a small mythical European kingdom called Tantalia. The two main characters are Niobe and Gethan. Niobe is the 25 years old princess and only child of King John and the late Queen. Gethan was engaged by the king to train his daughter in martial arts from the early age of 16 with the sole intention that she would assassinate Don Assure, a wealthy businessman responsible for them contracting asbestosis, a life-threatening illness.
But here’s the rub. Once Niobe had developed sufficient prowess in mortal combat and was ready to discharge her avowed mission, the king on his death bed decides otherwise. Niobe, however, on the very day she was crowned Queen, flouts his wishes and kills Don Assure, to the great displeasure of Gethan. He believes she had broken a cardinal rule in martial arts – never to execute the first strike. Gethan is bent on teaching his pupil a lesson, especially since Niobe becomes obsessed with the thought of more killings, the very pleasure of assassinating arseholes who were a threat to Tantalia. But she realises that she has to let go of killing spree, especially untenable for a queen. So how does she extricate herself from this bind? A win-win solution is found in the realm of reality TV.
The theme and setting are at once both mythical and strangely current, straddling two worlds. On the one hand, names like Gethan, Niobe and Tantalia suggest a world akin to Arthurian legend. Yet Niobe takes an elevator and travels on an aeroplane. Tantalia negotiates to join the EU and even holds a bilateral meeting with Australia.
The author’s Acknowledgement at the conclusion of the story is worthy of special attention. Here, the author explains how he drew on his varied interests and experience to weave into Sovereign Assassin.
As a bonus, the author also offers the reader along the way tit bits of Zen wisdom and scientific facts. Example: bruises look initially worse, change in colour from purple to yellow as the haemoglobin change structure; violence just exists, one must befriend and tame it.
All in all, Sovereign Assassin is a worthwhile read. Certainly, it got me turning pages.

Sovereign Assassin by Robert New is a page turner. This ambitious thriller tells of the Princess Niobe of Tantilia’s plan to avenge the death of her parents the late King John and Queen Marigold.

After the death of her father, Niobe’s world is turned upside down as she vowed not to actively seek revenge against Alban, the person responsible for their death. However, she has been training in martial arts for most of her life and was fully prepared and ready to avenge their death. She was primal assassin who her parents considered to have insufficient concern for life. In a well-thought-out and executed assassination plan she succeeds; however, the act does not satiate her urge to kill.

As the Queen, Niobe has immunity and cannot be charged for murder. Seeking the thrill after killing Alban, she finds another target who meets her five straightforward criteria and prepares to assassinate him, and it is here the plot accelerates rapidly. She is recorded and a video is shared on the news revealing that the Queen is a killer. Following advice given, Niobe calls a press conference and admits to being an assassin and elaborates on her criteria.

Sovereign Assassin is filled with psychology quotes of Chinese Philosopher Sun Tzu, Isaac Newton, and others shared within the book. “It is the unemotional, detached warrior who wins, not the hothead seeking vengeance, and not the ambitious seeker of fortune.” – Sun Tzu
It gives depth to the story and even shows the growth of the protagonist as she reflects on the interpretation and meaning to her.

Robert New has capably laid out graphic fight scenes that a reader can visualize how this cold-blooded assassin executes her moves, making it believable. I thoroughly enjoyed the character development of the protagonist and the book keeps up a good pace. I recommend this book for anyone who loves a great fantasy story.

Is Princess Niobe ready to become a leader for her people? Apparently, she isn’t since her only objective is to acquire “sovereign immunity” and avenge her parents murder by killing the people responsible for it. Or, maybe, if we consider the behaviour of some politicians and world leaders that seem to always know how to commit crimes and go scot-free, she is as ready as she can be to be queen. “Sovereign Assassin” written by Robert New is a captivating fiction novel. It is very well written; crime, mystery and political intrigue are skilfully woven into its pages. The descriptions of events and settings, and the construction of the characters are excellent. Some of the passages are spine-tingling.
Although this is a work of fiction, some passages and occurrences resonate with us since some unsettling events are too similar to reality. The book tugs at the readers’ feelings and questions all they may believe they know about what happens beyond their threshold. I think this book is an entertaining and compelling pastime but it also makes us reflect upon the society we live in.

great twist of a thriller!

Sovereign Assassin is a fascinating thriller written by Robert New. When I first came across this title, I thought it was going to be about an assassin who goes after monarchs and world leaders. Then I realized that I read the title wrong and it is in fact about a princess turned queen who is an assassin. The premise is very original and interesting—I’ve never heard of a similar storyline. This makes it impossible to put down, because I had to figure out where the author was going to take the story.
It’s well written in that the readers aren’t just watching a monarch on a rampage. I understood that the killings were unjust, but in many cases, because Niobe uses 5 criteria to pinpoint her victims, they were understandable. I was surprised when the story twisted from a revenge killing to an uncontrolled assassin, and the author does a good job of proving that even with certain criteria, emotion drives us and clouds our judgment—such is the complicated manner of human psychology.

Sovereign Assassin is a book written by Robert New. The story starts with the preparation of Princess Niobe to ascend to the throne. However, this is not like a regular ascension. Niobe has another plan in mind for when she becomes a Queen. The Princess has been training with the help of her martial arts instructor, Gethan, to kill the businessman responsible for her parent's deaths. This event will unchain several killings, but because Niobe is a Queen she has sovereign immunity, and her people stand behind her and what her believes are. Becoming a successful Queen and killer, she is presented with a reality tv show idea about her next kill. Will she still be loved? Or will everyone turn against her?

What a fantastic novel! A great way to not only understand how deep an act of revenge can be stuck in your soul but how society reacts when it comes to “famous” or “royal” people. It is very interesting to see how the story develops and people either love it or hate it. Highly recommended!

Sovereign Assassin is an exceptionally well-written book based on Princess Niobe’s life and how she was prepared to take revenge on her dead parents.
As a fantasy novel writer, Robert New seems to have such a great and talented mind that he is able to create incredible stories that arouse readers’ curiosity, like this one. I dare to say that I read it in only two sittings since it was very hard to put down when I needed to. It seems as if it just keeps getting better and better.
It is an easy book to read and follow the plot, even with the surprises. The book is very detailed on the actions of the main protagonist and that made me feel inside the story all the time. The writing is very well done and I could easily see that a lot of research was done into the background of the European country of Tantalia.
This book deserves more than 5 stars. Ten stars is even a low number, believe me!

Sovereign Assassin by Robert New is an intriguing story of a girl and her unconventional personality which provides a cluster of action, adventure, and thriller. Niobe is preparing to become the queen which is her birth right but she also has been secretly training to avenge her parents' death. Even though she successfully conducts her deed, she is caught on camera and is exposed. Niobe is safe by her sovereign immunity but gets caught up in the scheme of a reality tv. As the world watches on, Niobe is set to become a sovereign assassin but it is a perilous journey of multitudes of consequences.

I am dazed by the newness of the storyline and how the protagonist is set on a journey so unique. The author has done an amazing work with the creativity and progression of the story. This is a fascinating thriller with quite a few surprises which helps build a momentum for it to be fast paced. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a different read as it surely leaves a mark.

Captivating!

“Sovereign Assassin” by Robert New is such a great fantasy book! Although I’m a huge book nerd, I normally tend to like more realistic books. But this one is different! I loved the plot and the idea of having someone in power who is immune to the law and can basically do whatever she wants to. It’s almost the way it is in reality these days, with the difference that in our world and western civilization, powerful people try to hide their criminal acts. They are basically more hypocritical. But in this novel, it is totally conformed with the law for a sovereign to kill whoever they want to and they don’t have to suffer any consequences.
I truly loved reading this book and drawing all the parallels between the fantasy world in which Niobe lives and our “real” world. This is where I realized that there are more similarities between these two words than I would have liked…
Definitely recommend! It will make you reflect a lot :)

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel. The continually unfolding action held my attention to the very last page. In his latest tale, Robert New explores the consequences of a country’s sovereign exploiting her immunity from prosecution to murder people commonly considered undesirable. Building on her high public profile and being in some ways above the law Queen Niobe Ancora is drawn into turning her homicidal exploits into a reality TV show. The author makes use of his background as an educator and his long-term interest in karate for inspiration. No opportunity to tutor us in relevant aspects of psychology and physiology is missed. Bringing in elements of current world politics, Robert weaves an engaging story describing the personal development of a fascinating but ultimately flawed young woman. Definitely recommended.

Unexpected Satire Fiction

With a strong main character who is determined to bring justice to those responsible for her parent's death, Sovereign Assassin is a well-written and well-rounded story that is perfectly fitting for the satire fiction genre. The author presents a captivating writing style that has the ability to pull a reader into another place and time. With a unique premise involving reality television, the story takes several unexpected turns that will leave a reader in surprise at all corners. I like stories that have a strong female lead and this one didn't disappoint with that. Author Robert New has a unique writing style that I think so many readers could enjoy and appreciate. Though it's over 200 pages, this is easily a story to sit down to read and quickly get lost in.

Awesome!

This book totally exceeded my expectations. The cover caught my attention immediately but the story was much more interesting than what I had imagined.
Sovereign Assassin is a sci-fi novel that follows Niobe, the princess of Tantalia, who will become queen soon. In that moment, she will have sovereign immunity and so, she will kill the murderers of her parents. She managed to fulfill her mission, but one of her kills was caught on video. Strangely, her people seem to accept these events. Then a TV producer offers to do a reality show about her next murder and she accept it.
The author, Robert New, has a great imagination and he managed to create an amazing story. The plot is captivating and has turns and twists that kept me on the edge of my seat. It has the right portions of action, mystery and fiction. I recommend it. I enjoyed it a lot!

Robert New has done a great job with his new story. Sovereign Assassin is, in my opinion, the kind of fiction/fantasy novel that the new era was expecting. The main character is a lady, Princess Niobe, a young girl former Queen, who was taught martial arts to avenge her parents' death. This type of heroine is what I like to find in a story. Women in power and taking control of everything, and people accepting and following her for what she really is.

Not only have I found this approach very interesting, but also the writing style of the author. In this novel, Robert uses descriptions and adjectives so well that I felt immersed in this fantasy European country. Moreover, the course of events that come after the Princess is crowned, lead to an unexpected end. I'm sure many young people will enjoy this book. I'm recommending it to all my friends.

This novel has a very creative and strong plot. The main character is waiting to become queen to bring justice to the person responsible for their parents' death, because as a queen she is entitled to kill without being prosecuted.

At first as a reader, I was a little hesitant about this idea of immunity, but it took me two seconds to realize that unfortunately, it doesn't come far from reality in many countries. I think the author managed to tell a very intriguing and different story that captivated me since the beginning wanting to know why and how everything was going to be.

To conclude, I think “Sovereign Assassin” is a great action-packed book with a lot of suspense. I really liked it!

Princess Niobi is the main protagonist of this satire written by Robert New. She will soon become Queen and will be able to kill the businessman responsible for her parents’ death, without prosecution due to her sovereign immunity.
Fictional and fantastic per se, this story is a lot more entertaining than other fictions I’ve had the chance to read since the events are interwoven in such a way the readers’ attention will be held until the very last page. The author seemed to have put everything
he had on the table to create a story that moves fast and never gets dull, mostly thanks to the dialogue-based style chosen by New. I was unable to put this book down until the final heart-pounding twist. Loved it!

This book presents a captivating story about the journey of princess Niobe in the tiny European country of Tantalia. The story is well written and successfully manages to hold the reader's attention till the end. The character arcs and their monologues seem real and create a lot of curiosity. I have always been an avid reader and no book till now succeeded in maintaining curiosity as this book did. The story made me so intrigued that I read the whole book within 3 days.

The protagonist is so well written by the author Robert New that I felt connected with her throughout the book. The best thing I found was how the author did not limit it to one genre element and instead provided a full package of action, drama, and thriller.

Not your ordinary princess story

"Sovereign Assassin" by Robert New tells the adventure of Princess Niobe , a princess in training to be a queen and an assassin in the quest to avenge her parents' death. She puts justice in her own hands and lands a reality TV deal. She is the exact definition of a modern-day princess, gone are the days of damsels in distress. Robert New kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time! The author has written an entertaining and fresh story. It was an interesting read and the excitement of guessing what happens in the
next chapter keeps the reader invested in the story! Reading this story makes you think if the world is ready for a sovereign assassin, I think it does have some truth to it.

It’s not the first book I read from author Robert New and once again, he has managed to populate his novel with a cast of endearing and quirky characters that tug at my heart strings. I think I have much to admire and enjoy from his talent.
“Sovereign Assassin” is an entertaining, fast and marvelous story that mixes adventure, action, fiction and fantasy.
The writing style is simplistic enough but full of details and let me understand each character in such a meaningful way that I’m astonished. They come alive and I could get lost in the fantastic story feeling part of it.
I would like to say that, in general, this novel seemed to me beautiful and exciting. I was glad to read it from the beginning up to the end.

Sovereign Assassin is an accelerating fiction novel that follows the story of princess Niobe. But she's not an ordinary princess, as she's training hard with her instructor Mr. Gethan to become ready to execute her plan. Niobe is after the man responsible for the deaths of her parents, both slow and agonizing, due to the negligence of a businessman called Alban Crab.

Why the wait? Because as soon as she ascends to the throne, Niobe will get full immunity on her acts. This will be the first but not the last of Niobe's murders, even with people's knowledge about her agenda.

I really enjoyed this book, Robert New strikes with this very interesting idea, very original. It's fun to imagine how society could react to a sovereign assassin nowadays.

Right from the start, "Sovereign Assassin" grabs the reader's attention. It is a book where two themes, which I like very much, come together; one is royalty and the other is fiction. In this story, we meet the princess of Tantalia, called Niobe, who was secretly trained to kill the person responsible for the death of her parents.
Author Robert New, in my opinion, created a great literary work. I loved how the story flows chapter by chapter. The narrative is excellent and all that is thanks to the author's ability. The characters are strong and excellently described. I really recommend this great story to anyone wanting to read an original book.

The first thing that caught my attention was the pretty cover of the book. But Sovereign Assassin is much more than a nice cover; it is truly an original and vibrant story that introduces the idea of a young Queen, who is also an assassin, with the knowledge of her own subjects.

I found the story to be thrilling, as it combines fast-pace writing, page-turning scenes and high-beat events. I think that the story flows remarkably well from chapter to chapter, revealing its mysteries piece by piece and always maintaining a high degree of unspoken tension

This is the perfect book for anyone who likes stories full of intrigue and action, like me. I highly recommend reading it!

What if you were untouchable because you had royal immunity—would you play by the rules or take advantage of the open world in front of you? In Robert New’s Sovereign Assassin we follow Niobe, a member of the royal family, along her journey of revenge, intrigue, and coming to terms with her responsibilities towards her country. The storyline is tight, with no plot holes and isn’t just another ‘run of the mill’ type crime/adventure story.
Fast paced and action packed, the novel is a swift and untiring read. Especially for lovers of drama, they will find it is a well written and engaging novel, and one that you will continue to think of even after completing.

A story that mixes a lot

“Sovereign Assassin” is a book that surely surprised me. After reading this reader, it came to my mind that Robert New, the mind behind this fantasy, has a creative brain, because there are lots of unimaginable elements linked in this sole story.

For this reason, I found the reader difficult to follow in certain parts. In addition, some of the events were quite not convincing to me. Despite this, I decided to keep on reading and I started to like the story, to fall for the characters and to understand New.

I give this story three starts because it was not easy following it, but I still recommend it for fantasy followers.

“Sovereign Assassin” by Robert New is a satirical and witty fiction, really unique in its kind.

The author perfectly weaves intrigue and speculations in the plot, to create an engaging tale about a monarchy in the fictional European country of Tantalia. The main character of Princess Niobe is well described and her story, greatly developed. The succession of events and reactions is captivating.

In addition, I liked very much the writing style. New keeps the chapters catching and brings each one to a fitting end that urges us to the next for more.

From my point of view, this book can be enjoyed by all kinds of readers, as it is entertaining and exciting. Highly recommended.

This is an unconventional novel. It surprised me as soon as I started reading it and from that first page I couldn’t stop until I finished it.  It is an entertaining fiction story that presents a very original idea. Its protagonist is a young woman soon to become a queen who turns into a murderer when she kills her parents’ killers. This event is taken as an act of vengeance and it seems not to be condemned by her subjects.
The narrative becomes fascinating when being accepted as a “sovereign assassin”, she is proposed to participate in a show about her next killing.
I found this book clever and entertaining. I recommend it and I look forward to reading more from this author.

A Great Novel

Sovereign Assassin by author Robert New is a novel that I really enjoyed reading. I read it from cover to cover with great enthusiasm and I almost couldn’t stop reading. One of the things that I liked the most was the setting, and the other one was the characters; they were very well developed and believable. I liked their dialogues and how they were established.

This fiction fantasy novel has it all; it is dynamic and entertaining so I would recommend it to everyone who likes this genre. The author has done a marvelous job with this novel. Five stars go for this reading!

Are you ready to read Sovereign Assassin written by Robert New? This story will lead you to think about people in a new way. Her Royal highness is in training to avenge the death of her parents. To be ready her coach gave her a riddle which, when answered, would indicate she would be ready. This riddle would be a thought which would lead her to find something deep about herself. Overall, this story shocked me. Would you be shocked to find out a person of royalty would need to learn karate for an act of revenge? Will learning the riddle and learning self-defense lead to greater lessons, than just kick and a punch?

Creative story

Robert New has created a book with a very interesting premise. I found it to be very creative and off-the-wall in a good way. Basically, what would happen if someone with royal powers of immunity exercise those powers to assassinate someone… And her nation actually made a reality TV show out of it? The premise is creative, but not silly. And yet, however, there are certain parts of the book that do come across as implausible or sort of juvenile—however because the overall premise was so creative I was able to look past that and really enjoy the story.
