Lots of drama and love. I think this is one of the best stories from Eva Devon. A few pp didn't like it, but I loved it. I think it flowed nicely. Couldn't put it down, another into the early morning read.
I'm so pleased I read it. 5☆

The Beast’s Belle, Book 3 of the Bluestocking War, was about Lady Felicity Penworthy, youngest of the three daughters of the Earl of Harrowton, and His Grace Damian Blackmore, the Duke of Hardcastle.
Two years after having been saved from ruin and a man she had thought loved her, Felicity was finally returning to England...but not to London or to either of her sisters' homes. She was going to the northern end of England to become the companion to a lady whose brother was a friend to the Duke of Blacktower and was willing to help her stay out of the public eye. Of the three Penworthy sisters, Felicity was the only one who truly characterized the word "bluestocking". The other two were more Ladies of the Ton than their younger sister.
Side Note: Although the blurb stated that Felicity was going to be a companion to the Duke's sister, the book did not mention her...just the Duke's aunt. However, for the first seven chapters...there was no sign of either. The Duke thought of his aunt repeatedly throughout those chapters, but she never put in an appearance, though Lady Elizabeth did finally show up at the beginning of chapter 8 (the aunt, not the sister. However, in Chapter 10, the author referred to Elizabeth as Damian's sister and not his aunt then changed it and referred to her as his aunt again. It's like she couldn't make up her mind. Quite frustrating.). Another thing that irritated me was that, at one point, the Duke surmised that no one had ever taken care of Felicity, which was total bunk because both of her older sisters had done everything they could to protect her from their father...and all of the conmen of the world. She brought on her own ruination by her own actions...no one else's.
As she was traveling to her destination, Felicity met with a couple of unfortunate incidents, one which left her alone in the carriage for an unspecified amount of time during a raging storm, and the second exposed her to a highwayman trying to rob and hurt her while she waited for the return of the coachman and footman. It was during this last scenario that she first met the Duke. The storm which she had to endure left her sick for several days, during which time she and Damian became better acquainted...and because of the closeness they were developing, it sent him running to a friend's in the highlands of Scotland to avoid her.
Though the author continuously hinted at a tragedy in both Damian's and his Aunt Elizabeth's past, it was not brought out in the first nine chapters, so the reader was in the dark for most of the book, thus being forced to wonder as to why he was such a morose figure...and so determined to remain aloof from Felicity and everyone else. It was quite exasperating, to say the least. The only real sign that Damian was troubled by his past was his high tailing it away from his own home for several weeks. The author didn't go into detail as to whether or not it was 2 weeks, 3 weeks, or even a month or more. Just "weeks".
There was way too much fluff in this novel, not enough angst or drama until almost the end of the book...and worst of all it was way way too modern. The language, the actions, the deeds, the way the characters lived and dressed. Everything about it was off. The chemistry and passion between Felicity and Damian were both quite weak. It was a milksop book that only just got good in the last three chapters...but that was not enough to save the story.
The characters were definitely not of the era, as previously stated. While they were mature, they were too old for their ages, although to be honest, the author never truly gave any of the age. How they definitely did not suit the time period in any way. The whole thing was just one big disappointment. While the first book earned a five-star rating, the other two (this one included) barely earned two stars. This one? Just one star and that was only earned by how the story ended. The entire series was too modern in every way. The language, the characters, none of it was in any way historical. The author would have done better if she had not written these three books. Knowing that there are three others gives cause for concern for, if these three were so bad, what does that say for the next three? It doesn't bode well.

Silly. Wishy-washy characters who keep changing their minds about who they are and want to be-this felt like it was to serve the needs of the story rather than actual character growth or struggle to grow. The villain is so over-the-top villainous it was hard to believe in the character, so it was hard to take the villainy entirely seriously. No real connection to the previous novels in this series, which was mostly fine in terms of this novel standing on its own (though I never fully understood the scandal that Felicity needed to move to Yorkshire to be saved from…it’s just that I also never really cared that much). Anyway the odd thing was that Felicity is one of three sisters who presumably all suffered greatly at the hands of their father, and perhaps of society, and at least one of those sisters has married a rich duke. So why is Felicity sent off to be a companion to an aunt when she should have been enjoying a season under her brother-in-law’s protection? And why is she so detached from her sisters; choosing never to write to them and not to invite them to her wedding? Surviving what they (presumably) survived together should have knit them closer together. Whatever. Odd story choices. I just wanted to get to the end so I could move on to a preordered book that popped up after I started this one.

No longer living the past

Damien at a young age endured a devastating loss. Once he became of age his aunt Elizabeth who literally saved his life lived in this huge castle with him and the horrible memories! Elizabeth bore the physical and mental scars of that terrible tragedy!
These two are drawn to each other but have spent very little time together to develop any feelings. Felicity us to be Elizabeth companion and she is but she us also deeply curious about Damien! I thought Damien a dark soul with a troubled past but I did not like how he and Felicity began their very physical relationship! Yes Damien is a Duke but after all the hell Felicity went through.... You are just going to lay with him?!! Continuously!!?? Damien didn't even make any plans until his friend came from Scotland!? Yes they are in Yorkshire but rules still apply!? There is some genuine warmth initially when Damien rescued Felicity but never was he a Beast?!
When a horrible threat nearly kills Felicity Damien and his friend did deal with it once and for all! Felicity poor thing thought she was cursed! Not!! For his actions in ridding Felicity life of that torment well that's worth 4 stars!!

Book ends at 85%; needs editing

This story is very quick. It would be even shorter if the author omitted the dramatically angsty and redundant inner dialog that makes up most of the story. I ended up skimming many paragraphs after realizing that I had already “heard” the main characters’ thoughts over and over. The action scenes are very brief. The romance develops instantly. There is kissing and a sex scene. There are only a few pages of conflict before a very fast climax and denouement, which includes a one-sided comeuppance confrontation scene.

There is violence toward the female protagonist, after which there is no mention of her injuries, references to secondary characters’ deaths in the past, and lots of references to a conflict in a previous book, which makes this entire book feel like a long epilogue.

There are numerous typos: grammatical errors, wrong words, incomplete sentences, and a few punctuation errors. These mistakes distract from enjoyment of the story.

The last 15% of the book consists of advertisement blurbs for other books.

If a reader enjoyed the author’s previous books in this series and wants to know what happens to Felicity, this book is worth reading. Otherwise, this book is meh.

Second Chances

I absolutely loved Felicity and Damians story. Damian has lived with the knowledge he lost his entire family except his Aunt years ago to a fire. He lived a miserable life but took in people who needed another chance. So when his friend asked him to take in his sister-in-law Felicity after 2 years away he jumped at the chance.
Felicity was on her way to be a companion to a Duke’s Aunt when her carriage broke down. Left alone a footpad tries to rob her, when she kicks him he tries again at her and is wretched away by a lone figure. The gruff man beats the footpad and Felicity goes with him knowing she will be safer. She realized her rescuer is actually the Duke her employer.
Damian never thought he would have to rescue apparently this amazing woman, it seems she was doing great protecting herself. But when he gets her back to the castle she falls ill and he all but watches over her.
He knows she is broken in away as is all the inhabitants of his castle but there’s something different about Lady Felicity.
A wonderful story with a beautiful ending.

A fairly enjoyable read but I didn’t really feel any depth of character in either the H or h and was left feeling a little disappointed. It certainly didn’t reach the heights of the first book in this series, which I loved.

Damian has withdrawn from society because of a past family tragedy. Felicity has become a companion to Damian’s aunt following her ruination a couple of years ago. Their relationship gradually develops to its natural conclusion (despite his attempt to protect himself by retreating to Scotland for a few weeks) and a moment of jeopardy forces them to realise their true feelings.

This book brings the welcome return of the Duke of Clyde and am looking forward to his HEA next.

There is 1 on page, not very detailed love scene and that’s about it!

An ok read, not helped by a couple of editorial issue with peoples names and relationships
being changed (Whitecliffe/Highcliffe, Blackmore/Blacktower, brother/nephew).

This is the story of Felicity and Damian. She is the youngest daughter of the disgraced Earl of Harrowton who spent his fortune gambling and drinking. She was conned by him to believe she was in love with a Naval captain. She planned to marry, he planned to embezzle funds from her brother-in-law, the duke of Bloacktower. Bloacktower stopped the plot and sent the Earl to a tropical island. Ruined, Felicity went to become a companion and let the ton forget her shame.
Damian is the Duke at Hardcastle. He had known great sorrow in his life and chose to isolate himself from people who would cause him to feel. Feelings meant pain. He avoided pain, so he avoided people. His aunt Elizabeth needed a companion to fill the void of the loss she and her nephew shared. Felicity was hired to fill that space.

Lady Felicity's hired coach has broke down on the way to Hardcastle castle to take a position as a companion to the aunt of the duke. A man comes out of the rain to steal from her. She does not sit there and take it. When he tries to attack her she fights back and is fitting for her life when a huge man comes and saves her. Takes her to the castle and sits with her that night as she has a fever. Then he is gone. The duke has had a very sad life as has Felicity. When he returns they find they are attacked to each other. She is very honest and straight forward as is the duke. Though she is an earl's daughter she has been use to being on her own. Aunt Elizabeth and Felicity get along well together and she feels at home there. She does not feel worthy of marrying the duke but things happen that makes her realize they need each other.

LIVE LIFE, NOW

Maire Clairmont (Eva Devon) writes on multiple levels.
Each book is, of course, a standard romance, moving through the normal stages to happily ever after. Usually, she inserts a bit of suspense.
At a slightly deeper level, she hits on the standard investigations of class and gender roles in whichever Era she is writing.
On a deeper level, she tends to probe into whether we learn to trust from our families, or if trust is instinctive. The effects of socially accepted misogyny, and even abuse get delft handling.
With an overtone of "have things really changed?"
And deeper yet - what of the present is determined by the past? How much control do we really have over our fate?
Obviously, for happy ever after, a fair bit, but the questions remain.

An awesome read!

I enjoyed reading about Damian and Felicity, how they met and helped heal each other. Felicity was stuck in a broken carriage during a storm after the coachman took off leaving her to fend for herself. A footpad tried to rob her and she fought him and than she was rescued by Damian, who happens to be a Duke, she was heading to his castle anyways to be a companion for his aunt. Later on her father kidnapped her so he could get some more money out of a Duke, instead he ended up hanging for his role in the kidnapping. Glad they had a HEA. I highly recommend this book! 👍👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤❤

Beautifully written

I give this five stars despite the lack of proofreading because it's so beautifully written. The language is poetic without being purple. This lyrically told story contains an unconventional heroine who is candid and an unconventional hero who isn't a womanizing jerk.

That said, the author would be we!l-advised to hire an editor. Is Elizabeth the duke's aunt or sister? What really happened with Capt. Barrow? Did the encounter in the library happen the day before or longer past? Various inconsistencies need to be clarified as well as incorrect words corrected. The word "duke," by the way, is not a proper noun unless it's used as a name.

I'm a big fan of the Beauty and the Beast theme and The Beast's Belle didn't disappoint me, it is a very enjoyable regency romance. Lady Felicity and Damian the Beast of Bly Castle are lonely and hurt from past scandal and family tragedy. I loved the banter from the start. The scene where they first meet sets the story up beautifully and it goes from strength to strength, well written with the right amount of heat. Their attraction to each other is undeniable and their journey to happily ever after is wonderfully done.

At long last!!!

So much pain for both Felicity and Damian, each looking for peace. This was a story of healing. One of taking back personal control of one's life. Neither of them needed rescuing, they need someone to see them, accept them as they are and nurture each other. That they created a life outside of the strict rules of their society was perfect.

Throughout this series always somewhere was the girl's father...the Earl. Such a low, despicable, narcissistic, wretch of a human. That justice was finally meted and so beautifully had me cheering. Well done, Ms. Devon.

slow paced romance

Felicity survived the cruelty of her father and the tons gossip. She drew strength from her experiences and craved freedom which she experienced at Hardcastle estates. The Duke was tall, dark ,mysterious, protective, and distant. He survived a traumatic event as a child that no one talked about. Their bonding was over their pasts. They both needed to move on and be accepted for who they were. The story moved slow but steady and the villain was familiar. Spoiler the villain got what he deserved. The happy ending was truly happy and tender.

A great conclusion to the storyline of the three sisters, who had a BEAST of a father, but never stopped fighting to better themselves and have a better life.

Felicity had a lot of growing up today from the first book, but overcame her bad decisions and choices to find a safe and fulfilling life, which eventually led to love.

Damian and his family had suffered a great loss, and never thought to find happiness; but one never knows what waits around the corner.

So glad that Augusta's, Phillipa's, and Felicity's father eventually got his just reward!

Sadness, loneliness, and self doubt can lead to deep desperation. A soul can just survive the darkness or decide to live life now. Felicity had been wronged and in eyes of the ton and her father she was deemed worthless. She takes her future in to her own hands and chooses life and love. With her zest for life she brings joy and light to Damien. Eva Devon has given us a tale of choices. Choices of darkness or light, love or hatred, and joy of sadness. Live life now!

I just could not get into these characters at all. I did not care for Felicity in the other two books therefore I should have realized this book was probably not for me.
I felt she was spoiled from the get go and the ruination she keeps talking about was brought on by her own foolishness and I did. To feel any sympathy. Honestly the fact she end up with a duke irritated me. Not sure I will follow for the next books in series.

How wonderful is love,

Felicity and Damian are broken souls that have much need of each other, tucked away in the bacon and beyond. Her brother in law sent her to Damian for a secluded second chance away from society and within the walls of the castle she found love. It was not an easy journey but wonderfully told. TBE book is not long but we see love grow and justice given and meet the Clyde, who appears in TBE next book. I am looking forward to his story.

Nice ending

It started off good. I was glued to those first few pages but then I kinda lost the way. Not so fond of this youngest sister. Damien was nice enough but he seemed to waffle back and forth between crotchety beast and sad-eyed savior. Took me longer to get through. I liked seeing the villains suffer for their crimes. It was a nice ending but it almost felt like two stories mashed in one.

The book was very poorly eddited and that really got in the way of enjoying the story. For example one paragraph referred to the Duke as Lady Elizabeth’s nephew and her brother—it was her nephew and NOT her brother.

I thought there were things that were never clearly explained or even explained at all—all the terrible things she had been through? What were they? Still don’t know and that was one of the pillars of the tale. Sorry I read this.

another great read

I’m working my way through this series, and The Beast’s Belle is another great read though not my favorite in the series. For me it loses a star because it lacks some character development for everyone excluding the Duke. Otherwise, it’s a nice beach read and moves the series forward.

So sweet

These characters were so sweet as they overcame their past pains. I enjoyed the blissful life they had. If only we could all have such a haven with poetic justice for those villains.
