Brisbane Bachelors #2

The Roller Derby Darling and The Delinquent

Drive fast. Love slow.

Edward Berringer is a chauffeur, a soon-to-be business owner, and oh, yeah, he’s an ex-con.

With the promise of financial backing for his vintage auto garage on the line, Edward has no time for dating, but when months of flirting with Karen Walker finally culminates in a scorching hot kiss, he’ll make the fucking time. After all, the manager of his favourite bookshop is everything he wants in a woman: smart, sassy, and a total badass. Who also happens to come from a family of cops. Awkward.

He knows he should probably stay away from her—and her overprotective brothers—but then again, he’s never been one to play by the rules.

Especially when love is involved.

“I need you to treat me like a whole woman and not some fragile, broken thing.”

4⭐️ I was really surprised by the depth and level of these characters. The honesty and rawness of their story was really sweet and unexpected, it was a really beautiful story. It has some content that people might find triggering so definitely look after yourself prior to reading and check the CW’s.

I loved hearing about their back stories and how their shared stories really brought them together and it was done in a really nice way. I love that they had each other. It was a really lovely pairing.

There were instalust vibes but it slow burn in the end which was a different twist. Due to its short length, I think were able to do that in a really fun way that kept the reader interested and entertained throughout this quick read. When the spice kicked in though it was great. Nice variety!

This is the second book in the series and brings Karen and Edward's story. The author brings a sweet and sexy insta love with strong characters and takes you into their lives with a bit of drama and a lot of steam and kept me reading with the entertaining storyline. It's well written, moves fluidly and is a terrific read.

This is the second book in this series, and it's Karen and Edward's story. Karen is Claire's friend and bookstore employee, and she's accepted the position of manager of Novelteas. Edward is Luke's friend and chauffeur. They quite obviously have the hots for each other, but both think they're not good enough for the other. The book is not too long and easy to read, with the story flowing well. I love these two together - they have amazing and sometimes amusing conversations. He's the one who puts on the brakes, though, wanting to take things slow. The honesty between them is refreshing, with no games. I love her hobby!

For the most part, I enjoyed this one. But I was expecting more of a good girl bad boy vibe. I never felt that. I didn't care for the confrontation toward the end. It felt like came really late in the story and was only there to get Karen to declare her feelings. The chemistry was insane between the main characters. I felt like I got to know Edward much more than Karen. I didn't get the bad boy feel from Edward. He was more of a stand up guy who made a mistake in his youth. Karen was hard to read in the beginning of the book, she came across as timid but then she was all of a sudden not. The couple has been flirting with each other for months, so their relationship's progressing felt very natural.

Book two in the series brings Karen and Edward's story. They have a steamy chemistry and smoldering passion but also face some drama. The author paints her scenes vividly and moves the story quickly and smoothly. I enjoyed reading their story.

One shouldn't jump to conclusions.
by and1515

Her best friend was being annoying again as she pointed out the guy she'd been so dreamingly fawning over was shackled free with no ball insight.
And the thought of trying to make small talk? No she wasn't to sure of herself anymore.
However her friend Claire just ignored her and kept pointing out all his best colors and the hobbies she thought they had in common.
Karen never expected to be offered a bump up in her job title but now that she was being given one she was anything but a fool.
Oorah....
Edward was enjoying the beautiful scenery she was wearing pale pink and her name was Karen.
Okay so his first opinions of her had been over harsh and quite undeserving.
Apparently the green eyed monster just saw fit to take a huge chunk out of his gluteus maximus and athough he hadn't staked his so called claim on her; he swore the boy would rue the day if his hands moved any lower.
Karen had been forever grateful that Edward showed up and she was pretty sure her previous dance party wasn't one a his favorite chums.
Edward point out that idiot's reputation and for pursing girls and that his invite didn't mean what she thought it did.
However she knew the other guy's modus operandi and she was pretty sure they weren't exchanging consonants and vowels.
Edward hated to be the bearer of bad news however if the newly Weds wanted to make their flight they needed to leave right now and he had no intentions of leaving Karen there.
He had to hand it to her she knew how to attain anyone's attentions and more ways then one.
Nevertheless he strives to spend as much time with Karen but he knew the second he said something the wrong way and in turn contracted a version of foot and mouth disease.
Karen had at first been nearly crushed by his words still he wouldn't let her push him out and once he smoothly corrected his error and won a date with her.
Sunday mornings were for his family and being a no show wasn't acceptable move.
Still he showed up wearing a big smile and silently grit his teeth because neither he nor his dad could figure out how to bridge the grand canyon between them.
As first dates went Karen couldn't help but smile he picked an absolutely beautiful spot.
Edward hadn't expected to enter the twilight zone when he went to pay his girl a visit at her job.
Nope not his best moments and for some reason she forgot to mention where both of her older brothers worked.
It wasn't that he was keeping secrets or any such thing he only wanted to share certain things from his past in his own time.
As a young man Edward learned many lessons the hard way
Anger and wisdom mix as well as sharks and tornadoes or the fact
he'd unfortunately fell victim to his own stupidity an irrational emotions on top of a flair for wild escapades.
But the price I paid for my misdeeds was schlepping from one dead in job to the next until I was almost at the end of my rope.
However as the old adage goes fortune indeed favored the bold.
Her own tale was filled with pain and humiliation but Edward deserved no less then totally honesty from particularly since he owned up to his past.
Frankly she was done with the past she wasn't allowing it to dictate her now.

Content Warnings: SA and Drug Use, not on page but are talked about in detail.

Where do I start? I really enjoyed The Roller Derby Darling and The Delinquent. It's funny, romantic, sweet and spicy all rolled into one. Karen and Edward are likable characters, and their journey from flirty friends to romance was entertaining, although a bit fast for my normal taste. It is definitely a case of instalove with just a bit of "I'm not good enough for them" angst mixed in.

While some things are happening in the background, like uncovering and dealing with Edward's rough past and Karen opening up about her assault and some crazy Derby girls, those felt like they were just ways to drive their romance forward. The story could have definitely benefited by exploring these situations a bit more and showing more of an impact on the characters.

Also, more roller derby. Please, more roller derby. Overall, though, I love Jennie Kew's writing style and was so happy for the little dictionary in the back to help me sort through some of the words and phrases I wasn't quite sure about. This is definitely a book to check out if you want something really sweet and spicy without a ton of conflict. I'll definitely be going back to read the first story in this series and looking forward to her next one as well.

Jennie Kew's The Roller Derby Darling and the Delinquent is an absolutely fun read. Steamy from the start, the tension between Karen and Edward is palpable.

Both Karen and Edward's stories are interesting. While they both have baggage, Kew adds twists to their tales making them more unique than the average hero and heroine.

I really appreciated Kew's storytelling as she took us through several beautiful settings in Australia, like the Sunshine Coast. Even the stories about the vintage cars adds layers to both the narrative and the characters.

One area that didn't work as well was the abrupt shift to the conflict. There was space throughout the story to build up to the climax, but after all the focus on character connections between Edward, Karen, and their families, the conflict really comes out of left field.

I'm curious to read more of Kew's work. She has great character development and I'm interested in learning more about the world she's creating.

Steamy romance 3.5*
This was my first book from this author. It was refreshing to read something set in Australia, however, there was not a great deal of information about the locality. The book started well. The characters were likeable, but the plot was a little thin as the storyline progressed. The drama from her fellow team member felt forced. The language and editing skills were good and there is an HFN ending for Edward and Karen. On the plus side, there were a lot of hot and steamy encounters between the protagonists.

I love the opening and how three dimensional Karen and Edward are.
I'm as good as wishing the characters to be actual people so I can befriend them and have them in my life 👌

Edward's dad really strike a chord with me and in the way that hits very close to home. I'm glad they are on their way to patch things up with each other.

The pages were lesser than I anticipated but that's only because I really wanted to stay longer Karen and Edward's world. So happy everything is sorted out and hope they'll pop up for a tiny bit in the next book 🥰

The ex-con meets the good sunshine girl.
This was a very sweet story with fun characters, smart banter, with steam and without angst.
The characters were great (even some of the secondary ones) and it was brilliantly written. I loved their background stories.
Great book to spend a few light hours.

This book felt a bit shallow in terms of characterization and plot. But it was good for a sweet little romance with some heat and relatively low conflict. There are a few points of internal and external conflict but they felt insignificant to the story. But I liked the couple overall and it was good for an afternoon feel good romance.

Good romance and good characters
It's a good romance between Edward and Karen. Each of them thinks they don't deserve the other, but can't walk away from each other either.
It's tender, hot, with characters who underestimate themselves, a family for Edward, who has a somewhat surprising behavior, and a touch of emotion when their pasts are revealed.

Better….

You know, I liked this book so much better than book one. We met Karen and Edward in Claire and Luke’s book, Edward is the chauffeur, a former entitled rich boy who liked grand theft auto. Karen is the blonde assistant manager, turned manager that everyone underestimates.

Good character development and Edward and Karen are far more interesting than Claire and Luke (yawn).

Karen and Edward have been flirty for months, but at their friends’ wedding, they progress to the next phase of their relationship. But, they both have “sob stories” - will that derail their desire for more? I loved the sparks that flew between these two, and how they built a relationship based on caring for each other along with dirty- rough smexy-times. I also really loved all the Aussie-isms and the beachy feel of the story. A fun and flirty read.

I have been waiting for this book for quite some time and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Positives
- love the writing style
- characters we already knew and really got to love
- can read it in a short time frame
- dialogue is funny like really funny
- built on the previous story so got to see more from there!

Negatives
- I wanted MORE although not sure how much more would be enough
though 😂
- quick read
- no epilogue

A great read and I can’t wait for the next one in the series!

Off to reread the first one

UPDATE 5th January 2021
OMG an epilogue released AND an extra scene! So happy with both and so grateful for the additions! Definitely improves the book as a whole!

Quick read with good character development

I did not read Revenge and Redemption, the first in the Brisbane Bachelors series. Sacrifice and Seduction follows on from this but can be read as a standalone, although it would seem the characters met and had some interaction in the previous book. I loved that the interaction between Karen and Edward were both very funny abut also serious and heartfelt. A chauffeur from a rich family, with a criminal record is not the usual hero and if you then throw in the daughter in a cop family, there are bound to be some issues....
But the angst in the book was not from outside forces, but rather the emotional scars, concerns and insecurities of our characters - And that makes for a great, albeit shorter story.

Wow! I really appreciated how this author addressed some serious social issues in an approachable manner. Issues were addressed in a sensible, healthy manner but didn’t take over the story or cause huge amounts of angst, and did reflect on each character’s individual development.

I really enjoyed the main characters, Edward and Karen, and their interactions, both with each other and with the secondary characters, as well as their relationship development.

This is a standalone story that is part of the series and it does genuinely stand alone, though the previous story’s lead characters are cute secondary characters here. The novella is dual POV, well written and edited, and a joy to read.
